Sep 15, 2014I'm looking for a way to automatically shutdown PC at midnight and turn it back on at 16h during work days (while I'm at work). Is there a way to do that in the built-in scheduler or is there an app for that?

Dec 16, 2013I'm currently experiencing this issue and it's really annoying. I just bought this laptop for 2 months and it's been working fine. Then suddenly this problem started yesterday. Generally every time I open up a game my laptop will automatically switch to Power saver mode and it causes some lags in the game. At this point I would Alt+Tab to desktop and switch it to "High Performance". Here's the annoying part, even though I have set it back to "High Performance", the laptop still works as it in "Power saver" mode, I can tell because the game is still laggy and slow. I tried to restart the laptop and experienced the same issue. I ran a Full scan by using Avast Internet Security 2014 and didn't detect any problem at all. What should I do?
By the way my OS is windows 8.1

Blank Screen After Waking From Power Save?
Sep 18, 2013After waking my computer from power save (monitor turns off after inactivity) all I get is a blank screen. Monitor turns back on but only shows black. System is still responsive (numlock/capslock still work and I can sometimes make it make sounds by pressing random keys).
After this happens, putting the system in sleep mode (with a shortcut on my keyboard), then waking it up from that restores normal operation. I tried hitting PrintScreen while on the blank screen and pasting it into paint afterwards, and it shows the desktop. So why is this happening?

Stuck On Safe Mode Automatic Repair Loop On Windows 8.1 X64?

I tryied everything but without sucsess.
Safe Mode didnt come up, and it stays on Automatic Repair loop -> Diagnostics every restart/boot, and c'ant get into windows.

Mar 24, 2014I have a Lenovo G580 laptop 2gb RAM, i5, and 500gb HDD. It had windows 8 RTM 32 bit installed on its C drive. It had come with DOS preinstalled so I had to do a fresh install of windows 8 via bootable usb. It worked well for few months but now it refuses to boot and goes into "automatic recovery mode" and then it says that your pc needs to be repaired with a recovery disc.
I did not made any recovery disc when it was working so I tried to do a fresh install of win 8 and then win 7 via bootable usb, but both have failed. The screen freezes after blue logo of windows appears and then it restarts saying it has encountered an error and needs to be restarted.
I have tried booting it in safe mode along with all other options on start-up menu but it doesn't work.

Jun 6, 2014issue with my laptop where I can't allow it to enter sleep mode or else it will restart/appear to have restarted the next time I wake it up. At first I thought it might be a power options issue, but I made sure that the computer was set to sleep and not restart when I close the lid. I've checked the bluescreen viewer and the cause of the restart seems to come from a driver power state failure coming from ntoskrnl.exe+1fcc1e, hal.dll+6a37, and storport.sys+33f0.
I've already run sfc/scannow to check for damaged files and I was also able to replace them using a DISM command, so now scanning the computer doesn't run into any errors, but this driver error still persists.
Sidenote: The driver errors mainly started after I reinstalled Kaspersky onto my computer to fix some issues that I had with it. Before that I was getting a couple of kernel data inpage errors, the latest of which occurred June 1.
Dell Venue Pro 8 - Set Sleep Mode To Never On Power Management Option?
Mar 9, 2014I recently purchased a DVP8 and I love this thing. Problem is, it suffers from wifi issues in that once it goes to sleep, the wifi automatically goes to "limited" and I need to retoggle the wifi setting to get it connected. I've tried all kinds of fixes - uninstall windows updates and reinstalling drivers, but to no avail.
So I basically said screw it, and set "sleep mode" to never on the power management option, and no more wifi issues. Seems like the wifi doesn't reactive properly when coming out to sleep mode. My question is - will this damage the tablet in the long run? In terms of battery life, I would think the main factor is the screen on time. I can just turn the screen off with a tap of the power button. Is there really that big of a difference?
Windows 8 Won't Start And Keeps Saying Automatic Repair

Than the screen just turns black.. It will just restart the same thing. I tried booting into safe mode but nothing happens.
Debugging :: Driver Power State Failure After Resuming From Sleep Mode
Jun 6, 2014I'm having a BSOD problem. After walking computer from sleep mode, within 1-2 minutes it will get a BSOD with the "driver power state failure" error and restart, but interestingly I never get the error the moment I wake up the computer. I'm using a Lenovo IdeaPad Y510P with Windows 8.1 64-bit. I already tried uninstalling the Intel HD 4000 driver, restarting computer, and installing the one on Lenovo's site (as this was suggested on the Lenovo forum as a common fix) but it didn't work.
The problem only started occurring after one of the following:
- Updating Malwarebytes to latest last week
- Installing a Windows update last week (there were 3 installed components, 1 of them was an Intel HD 4000 driver update, forgot what the other 2 were)
- Updating GeForce Experience and latest NVIDIA Graphics Driver (337.88), it included NVIDIA PhysX System Software 9.13.1220

Automatic Shut Down - Disables Fast Start Up?
Jul 26, 2013I use several applications (video encoders, download tools etc.) that offer a "shutdown when done" option. What I've noticed with Win 8 x64, is that when this type of shutdown is executed, Fast Startup is disabled and when the PC is turned back on, boot-up time is significantly increased (similar to a restart, where Fast Startup is also disabled). Is there a way around this? It seems unlikely that all these applications do something wrong. Maybe Windows treats this type of shutdown differently?

Jun 21, 2014I have Automatic Scheduled Maintenance set to run at 3:00AM. I get to this setting by going to Control Panel > Action Center > Maintenance > Change maintenance settings. I also have the box for "Allow scheduled maintenance to wake up my computer" checked.
However, I note that if I put my computer to sleep for a few days, when I wake it back up, Automatic Scheduled Maintenance has NOT run. I can tell this because my antivirus definitions are out-of-date and haven't been updated since I put the computer to sleep.
how to figure why it's not waking up for Scheduled Maintenance? Is it possibly a BIOS setting? Do I have to manually add it to Task Scheduler? I'm running Windows 8.1 Update 1, ASRock Z87E-ITX mobo, Intel i7-4770S CPU, Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD, 16GB RAM.
Maintenance :: Adding Any Task To Automatic Maintenance
Feb 1, 2013I found out how to add a task to the Automatic Maintenance that runs each morning. I use Geekzone's EPG collector to fill in the guide on Media Centre and I though it would be nice for it to run as part of Automatic Maintenance rather than wake the computer up again later to do it's thing.
Here's how:
Create an XML files in notepad and paste this in...

I got this from exporting a task that runs as part of Automatic Maintenance and edited it to suit.
the thing is, I still don't know how it works! I haven't been able to create a schedules task from scratch that runs as part of Automatic Maintenance.
Other than plagiarising existing tasks to get what I want, how it's really done?
I have what I want, and it works great being able to run all the things I want all at the same time at 3AM each day, as part of Windows' ritual. Even better, if I disable it from waking the computer, everything runs when I'm logged in and Idle. It's fantastic.

Oct 5, 2013I'm using Intel Rapid Start function, so my PC is starting from completely off to fully desktop in less than 10 seconds (no POST, no Boot ). But I must each time remember to stop "automatic maintenance", because if it is running when closing with IRS, then it won't start again. I can find the setting to change the time of running "automatic maintenance", but I want to deactivate it for ever!! I will maintaine my PC myself.

Jun 21, 2014I haven't noticed this as an issue until some recent Windows 8 auto updates (last 2 months, is generous estimate). "Save as..." take about 20-30 seconds, for 2 3rd-party medium weight word processors, to display the folder window where your want to save. It looks like it takes the computer a while to "round up" all the directory info to display it in the "save as..." window.
I did read here & elsewhere on changing the general option in the properties of a folder. I don't think that worked. I did also read (here?) about disconnecting the networked folders. I did do that, rebooted. There was no speedup. But then I remapped them all, and now MS-branded apps like wordpad & word/excel, do show the "save as..." window within a second or 2, as before. (Note: I do clean up the reg daily).

Jan 5, 2014I am running Windows 8.1 Pro and have just installed an 250gb SSD and also have a 1tb HDD. I have put the OS and various programs onto the SDD. I want to be able to have all data, for all users, pointed to save onto the HDD. (I will then get a 1tb USB3 HDD to back up the 1tb HDD - next step!).
I am getting very confused about how to make sure all documents/pictures/music/videos automatically get saved onto the HDD, rather than defaulting to the SSD. I also have user accounts for the family and I ideally want all photos/videos/music (but not documents) in just one location, so I end up with don't multiple copies of the same files saved by each user; they should all be access the same files.
How To Set PC To Not Auto Start On Power Failure
Jul 23, 2014today i came home to my alienware x51 in some dell system recovery screen, i asked my kid what happened today she said the lights flickered several times, during a freak storm, So my pc must have tried to auto start several times, this is not good at all, i'm so lucky no damage was done at least so far. But how do i stop this behavior from happening again is there a setting i can turn off, so if we have another light flicker or loss of power that it never does it again. I just hope in the long run that my computer is not damaged who knows how many times it tried to reboot.

I've already run the maintenance multiple times, and it seems to complete just fine, but the notification never goes away and it always tells me the maintenance was delayed after it supposedly finished:
I've also gone into Task Scheduler and manually run the Regular Maintenance task per the solution here, but no dice. Also rebooted the system many times.
Maintenance :: Automatic And Manual Chkdsk
Apr 25, 2013I have read that Windows 8 has a new Chkdsk, which checks the file-system integrity in background. I'm using Windows 8 Pro 64bit (and NTFS file-system on all drives).
Does this improved Chkdsk check the file-system just when the computer is not used, or does it check it also while the user is working? Or does it scan the drives just when it's maintenance time?
Does it still make sense to run a manual Chkdsk on some occasions, or can I just not worry and let Chkdsk do its checks automatically? Such occasions would be for example after the computer completely hangs and I have it to brutally turn it off with the power switch (happened lately with a Linux live-CD), or after problems with the electric line (loss of power/power outage, resulting in instant turning-off).
In other words, is it useful to run a manual Chkdsk when there is a suspect that something could have gone wrong with the file-system, or can I just continue working and let Chkdsk do its verifications?
How long should it take (more or less) from when a file-system corruption arises, to when it gets detected by Chkdsk?
What worries me, is that not doing a Chkdsk at once, to repair eventual problems, may make the problems get bigger while the hard disk (or SSD) gets used. And they could get such big that they could not get repaired anymore (just an hypothesis).
Maintenance :: When Does System Restore Create Daily Automatic Point
Mar 13, 2013I have read several times now that system restore creates a daily automatic restore point, I had a script to do this in 7 and I added it to win 8 , now I am thinking I don't need it.
I would guess it does it at start up. Having looked at the restore points going back to the 6th when i first got this laptop i dont see any instant restore points that look to have been created automatically(daily), and I don't see points for each software installed either (i read it does this also) as its a new laptop I have installed quite a few things and there ought to be quite a few restore points if this is the case.

Feb 7, 2014Since upgrading to windows 8/8.1 x64 i have twice had this situation when during boot up windows tries automatic repair & fails , every time i restart same repair fail happens , its stuck in this cycle , neither "Refresh" or "Reset" option works , . I have to do a fresh format & install , loose all my files stored in the OS partition , I even tried to recover the files using linux boot cd but the folders were inaccessible/corrupted .
I tried every solution i could find to make it boot including Unable to refresh or reset PC after Automatic Repair fails in Windows 8 but nothing worked .
This has happened twice in the one year since i have been using Win 8 , Is there any way to avoid this from happening i future ?
