Just updated to Update 1 on Win 8.1 on two machines. When I open the PC Settings App from Start Screen or Taskbar all the options are ok except PC and devices. When I select this on the app menu the app crashes back to the desktop.I suspect it's the new Drive Manager in that menu option. Other machine works fine with this option.

If you have, say, two laptops both running Windows 8.1, and it gets to the monthly Microsoft update Tuesday it seems crazy to have both machines independently downloading the same set of updates totalling around 300MB as was the case yesterday. Is it possible for one machine to run the updates, and then share the download files with another machine - whether via the local network (LAN) or via a usbkey or other media?
Certainly on my linux machines I have one machine run udpates and I then share the update package cache with all other machines saving considerable bandwidth on my home broadband connection. It would make a lot of sense to be able to do the same for Windows machines running the same version of Windows. The saving would increase even more if there was more than two machines in the same household such as if all members of the same family had their own machine.
I recently switched my pc from 2 AMD cards to 2 Nvidia cards, when i was preparing to install the 2 cards, i shut down my computer, during the shutdown it asked me to update and shutdown win 8 which i did. ever since i did that my audio devices are not detecting.. nothing i do is working.
When i use my plug and play speakers, they are not recognized... let me rephrase.. in the playback devices menu they show up as "Speakers" as they always have, then quickly disappear, then show up again, then disappear again, then back and forth over and over and over again..... i tried uninstalling my audio drivers and reinstalling. this did not work. i can get sound with the speakers, by just pluggin them into my TV, but i cant control the audio or the 5.1 surround from the tv, it just shows them as stereo...

i never had this problem until A) new cards, and B) installed the win 8 update... But i rolled my computer back to a date before that update, and then turned updates off in case that was it..
i've also tried installing drivers directly from realtek, directly from my motherboard website. i've uninstalled and reinstalled, and stopped windows from auto installing during my realtek installs on the drivers...
just cant figure out why it flickers like that, the speakers work fine in other devices (e.g the tv).

My friend happened to look in Devices and Printers, and in the Multimedia Devices section he had about 10 devices showing up that he never heard of. Six of them were computers with names that he had never heard of, the others were devices that we could not tell what they were.
I expect that these entries mean that at some time they were on the same network that he was on. Would that be correct?
If so, then it is a matter for concern because he never goes on public networks. He only goes on his network at home, and a network in a small office that he rents and shares with one other person. They have their own router with security set up on it, and that router is connected to an Ethernet jack that most likely goes to a switch on a network that also provides internet service to some other offices in the same building.
This computer is only about 2 months old, so these entries can't be too old.
When I looked at his computer, he was on his home network and all those other devices showed as Offline. I right clicked on them all and removed them. Would it be a good guess that perhaps the security of the network at his office was compromised, and those devices were connected to that network at some point?
I told him to monitor and see when they reappear, but he won't be back in that office for 2 weeks.
My System : I have two machines that share two monitors by the use of two KVMs. They both use Nviria GeForce vraphics cards (with twin DVI outputs).
One machine is Win 7 Pro X64 and the other is Win 8 Pro X64. Both have the latest Nvidia drivers. Both are full retail legal versions of the OS.
My Problem : When I switch between machines I usually lose one screen and it cannot be reactivated without a reboot. Sometimes the other screen reverts to its default resolution. This happens on every switch over with Win 8 and sometimes with Win 7 but not always.
I have discoverd that if I switch the 2nd screen forst and then the main KVM (which has the keyboard and mouse) then usually the Win 7 machine continues to see both screens. The Win 8 machine virtually always loses the primary screen (the mouse and keyboard attached to this KVM are unaffected and switch correctly always)
I suspect this might be an nvidia problem but short og buying a new graphics card I have no way of determining this.
have an active Volume license subscription from Microsoft and i want to setup KMS server in my home and want to active all my client machines ( i have about 8 machines with windows starting from Windows 7, Windows 8, 8.1, Office 2010 and 2013). I will be getting more machines in future but wan to go with KMS setup activation
My question here is in my volume service centre i dont see any KMS specific setup key , but i see KMS and MAK keys ( i am guessing KMS key is for client machine). can i use MAK key to activate windows server 2008 R2 and setup KMS server in that machine ?. will microsoft know how many machines i am activating internally in my home network
I know that i need more that 25 machines for KMS to work. I can use KMS emulator and make it 25 count.
This new sync tab feature in IE11 is handy. But it's also a bit annoying. I have about 7 or 8 PCs I use frequently and I re-install the OS all the time. So I end up with orphan machines that appear in IE 11 sync tabs and I can't seem to find a way to remove them. I also noticed that these tabs mysteriously disappeared on some of my machines.

You don't need even to run Windows as your Host --how to create a Portable system that runs Windows Virtual machines and totally boots from an external HDD / USB stick (even if there's no HDD in the main computer !!).
Using Unity mode simply gives you access to all your Windows XP programs (and runs them) directly from the Host without you needing to enter the VM at all -- Power up your VM and simply click the Unity mode on the vm menu.
If you use Linux as a host it saves you having to purchase a new version of windows (Linux is FREE). Simply convert your XP system to a VM and then you can keep running XP for as long as you like without worrying about having to upgrade Windows.
Here's my issue; I am a math and science teacher in a public middle school and am outfitting my class with thirty brand-new Lenovo touch computers. I consider myself above-average savvy with computers, having worked with every version of Windows extensively since the late 80s and DOS. The only OS that I haven't spent much time on is Windows 8.
These computers are all brand-new and of course have legal copies of Windows 8 -- irritatingly, though not yet updated to 8.1. Soo...It took me a larger part of one day just to get ONE of these computers ready for class use. It involved several stages of the Windows update/reboot dance, followed by removing myriad unneeded bloatware applications, setting up multiple child accounts on the machine, and finally installing some freeware educational materials needed for instruction. It was all unbelievably tedious!
I turned around and look at all the remaining twenty-nine computers with dread. Obviously I'm trying to work out some kind of shortcut to avoid having to spend my whole summer updating each of the new machines individually. In an ideal world, I would make some sort of image of the machine that I just spent several hours updating/configuring, and then replicate that across the other twenty-nine. In terms of hardware, this shouldn't be a problem since all of the machines are exactly the same make and model. But I anticipate other problems such as, for example, the serial number of the Windows version and the computer name will then be the same on all the machines and have to be adjusted. There very well could be other issues with replicated serial numbers, etc.
I'm thinking maybe I just have to bite the bullet and work at each individual computer one of the time. And then image them individually so that when the kids mess around with them, I can do an easy restore. How I could make this work?
I have a 60mb fibre broadband - on my old laptop (Win 8.1)with no external antenna, only what is built into the machine - I am getting over 62mb on several tests. My desktop - fourcore intel i5, 8mb ram on Windows 8 has no antenna either so I have an Alfa (AWUS036NH) with a 6db gain aerial attached, is struggling to reach 20mb. They are located side by side.

I just installed Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit on my Dell Vostro 3750 lap top, which I named Rosie, but am having problems connecting to the other machines.
When I go to the Network node in Windows Explorer on Rosie, I can't see either of the other two machines, but if I type Bessie in the address bar, it shows me the two drives that are shared. However, if I try and explore either of these, I get the following error...
The laptop is part of a workgroup, imaginatively named "Workgroup" as are the other two machines...
I changed the properties of the TCP/IP v4 to match the ones on the other two machines (with a different IP address of course) but this didn't work.
The odd thing is that I can browse the shared drives on Mirabel without any problem. In case it's relevant, both desktop machines can browse Rosie without problems. Windows 8 has changed so much from Win7, and it's wasting a lot of time trying to get it set up.
After installing Windows 8, I decided that I wanted to change my computer name. I followed the instructions online and changed it through Advanced System Settings. However, the old computer name keeps on showing up in Devices under Devices and Printers. I have looked at other posts in this forum

Is it because the network settings had network visibility option checked 'on'.
Also, would that mean someone may have accessed the files on my computer.

Why is one of my four internal hard drives listed as a Portable Device in Device Manager?
Removing it from Portable Devices does not remove it from Disk Drives and then it all looks normal and functions normal, until I scan devices or Windows reboots.
It also functions normal when it is listed in both spots, Disk Drives and Portable Devices, just annoys the hell out of me me that one drive is listed under Portable Devices, I want it gone from there.
On Windows 8, from time to time, all of my USB devices suddenly stop working, and the systray notifies that my "USB devices are not recognized." A reboot rectifies the problem, but the problem happens about once or twice a week.
Just a few weeks prior I had all of my USB devices going to a powered hub, which then was plugged into my computer. I happened to change motherboards from a Biostar 770E to an Asus M5A97 R2.0, which has plenty of USB ports. I hadn't bothered to eliminate the hub yet, and just as with the old motherboard, this one exhibited the "device not recognized" error. Ah ha, I thought! My USB hub has gone south.
So I threw it in the garbage, and plugged all of my USB devices directly into the motherboard (USB 3.0 portable drive, Logitech M705 wireless mouse, Belkin Wireless adapter, printer, and Remote Wonder. So I was quite surprised today when my USB devices dumped out, and Windows messaged me that my "USB devices are not recognized." I should note that I have installed AMD chipset drivers from the Asus website, as the board was quite unstable without them. With the Biostar, I opted not to install third party chipset drivers and it ran fine without them.
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. I think this was "Application information" service.
The problem is that now I can't run app called Turbo Service Manager to backup, services.msc, regedit, elevated cmd to use "net start", msconfig, even *.reg files won't launch. I can't launch Safe Mode through metro because my USB mouse and keyboard disconnects at the moment I should choose "4".
The Playback Devices applet will not open.
I have...
1. Run the CP in God Mode to try related applets. Volume Control Options and Volume Mixer will open.
2. Removed and refreshed all audio devices listed in the Device Manager. No errors.
3. Run control /name Microsoft.Sound and control mmsys.cpl from an elevated Command Prompt. The Command Prompt window blinks briefly, but the applets will not open.
4. System File Check sfc /scannow (no errors detected)
Running Windows 8 Pro with Media addon. Using the onboard sound from the Gigabyte motherboard. The sound plays fine on the current speakers, but I cannot change devices.
I was watching a TV show in my headphones, plugged it out for about an hour, plugged it back in during which time my Dell Inspiron 15 would have gone to sleep about 4 times.. I plug it back in after an hour and the music plays through the speakers and I looked up all solutions. None of them work. Checked my audio drives, disabled the speakers and enabled them back.. It is just a week old, my laptop.

When using a laptop it's easier for me to keep the track pad buttons set with the left button as my primary button (it's nearest my dominant thumb!)
This hasn't been a problem until I got a win 8 laptop when it started to synchronize the settings on my latop to desktop and vice versa. This is a good thing in normal circumstances but for me it's a pain as I have to keep changing the setting depending on what machine I'm using.
Is it possible to disable the mouse synchronization whilst retaining the synchronization of other settings?
My usb ports do not recognize some devices. Sometimes when I plug one device another one is unplugged., some times a specific usb port works, sometimes it doesn't. eg: when i unplug the mouse nw and plug it again it will stop working. if i plug another device eon a different usb port the mouse is disconnected. I went to control panel devices Manger and uninstalled every usb port and enable it again with no results.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI can't seem to get my profile to reliably sync to new devices or when I've tried clean installs on my main system. I have all settings checked to sync and the PCs are all trusted devices. Sometimes it will sync the desktop background and my profile picture, others it may sync some of my explorer settings. Sometimes it may not sync anything at all. My homegroup on any other devices also gets renamed to "winliveid_000" instead of the usual "winliveid@xyz.com." I've yet to figure out why this happens as well. I've tried deleting the data and trying again, all with the same result.
This has honestly all been an issue ever since I've installed Windows 8 and I'm starting to dislike the profile sync altogether. If it cannot reliably sync my data and all of it, I don't understand it's usefulness. I've also run the account troubleshooting tool, which gives a cryptic message saying "The following settings are turning sync off: Personalization." It gives no further details that I can see or look into and all settings are on. I've taken a look at Windows 8.1 and it seems that you have no choice but to initially use your Microsoft account to sign in, which is troubling. If it cannot be fixed, I may have to delete my synced profile online every time I try to reinstall my main system.
I have a Dell Inspiron laptop that I had to restore to the factory Dell settings recently. After formatting the hard drive and re-installing windows 8 I noticed that the computer name in the devices and printers panel was Dell, Inc. instead of the computer name that I put in when re-installing windows. Is there a way to change the computer name in the devices and printers panel so that it matches the computer name in the system panel? I can change the computer name by going into the system panel but that doesn't change the name in the devices and printer panel.

It failed came back as error 80070103 says trying to install a driver that's already installed or a driver of less compatible . So I looked in add and remove I do see a advanced micro device but I don't know if it's the same or better how do I find out. I have already installed the full-feature driver from the HP website but the printer does not appear in devices and printers. However my printer does appear in print dialog and the device manager. I have tried adding the printer through devices and printers but it has no effect.
When I try to print anything through print dialog or any application for that matter no print job is sent. Basically I can't print anything from my computer now.
I have already re-installed the driver multiple times only to come up with similar results. This is for my main computer which is a HP Envy dv7. Also I have connected to the printer via the wireless router option.
However for my second computer which is a Dell XPS 12 everything worked fine right from the start which also connected to the printer wirelessly.
I have a weird issue in which after a boot of the machine it will take some time for USB devices to become initialized, yes... this includes my USB keyboard and mouse. So essentially even though the system may be up and running at the user logon screen, I have to wait five seconds until I can type my password in on my USB connected keyboard.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am having problems with USB 3 devices disconnecting and reconnecting all the time when they are plugged into the Esata ports on the back of the motherboard in my sig. The USB 3 devices work ok in the normal USB 2 and 3 ports on the motherboard but I am not sure why they are not working in the Esata ports? I'm running Windows 8.1 with all the latest drivers and I am also running the BIOS f7e provided by Gigabyte to see if this would resolve the issue but it's not worked. If I connect USB 2 devices to the Esata ports they work ok, but could they possibly be faulty as they are not working correctly with USB3 devices?

It seams for me that nothing is wrong here except one thing. I can't turn on libraries and devices content. After closing window previously "shared" settings automatically are back to "not shared". And this strange behavior is on both PC. I have tried several times turn on sharing from control panel and from metro PC settings, but useless.
Whenever I try to connect my flash drive, phone or digi cams. It can't detect anything then I saw this in device manager, is this the culprit?
