So I have an ASUS transformer, windows 8 and when I plug in my USB, the confirmation sound I hear but it does not appear as a storage on the My PC file page. The USB is brand new and it worked before, its just now I can't open any files
View 8 Repliesas you know in Windows 8 if we want to show hidden file , we should go to view then option the change folder and search option then mark the show hidden filed.
is there another easy way to do this?for example add a option in right click menu?(in win 7 shawn posted a registry key that add show hidden file to right click menu but it does not work in win 8)
Virtually every file shows read only when I right click on it and choose properties. In uncheck read only, then click apply and choose applies to all subfolders and files. Windows appears to change the properties (a window opens up and a green progress bar fills). But if I click OK and close properties, when I look at properties again, they are shown as read only again.
This happens both when I am logged in under my user name, as well as if I log in as administrator.
The only difficulty it's created so far was when attempting ti embed a cover art JPG into an MP3 file in my music library.
I have a fresh install of Windows 8 on my desktop computer. However I've run into some major issues with accessing my NAS (Media Server/Hard Drive)
#1 - I cannot for the life of me map my NAS as a network drive anymore.
#2 - This the important one, I can't see over 80% of the files stored on my NAS, only the most recently updated ones. I can see them just fine from my brothers laptop that came preinstalled with Windows 8, and no issues whatsoever with other computers on the networks on Win 7. Is this an issue with fresh installs? If so how can I remedy this?
PDF files on my laptop show thumbnail previews erratically. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. In the attached screenshot, you can see that Word is showing nicely but the PDF file won't. Default app is Reader (the Metro app).
View 9 Replies View RelatedIn File Explorer the preview window box is checked and thumbnails box is checked, but I can only preview image files. Word or Pdf files do not show up. I did a factory setting reinstall of Windows 8.1. My word documents showed up in the preview window prior to the reinstall, but not my pdf files. I use this feature frequently.

I must have made an error upon set-up. Every time I connect a smart phone or tablet, a "windows explorer" window opens, showing the files on the device. I'd like to have the system just do nothing when I connect, but I can not seem to find out how to manage that option. I imagine it would be easy, if I could find it.

Is there a way to edit the contents of the ribbon menu, so I can get rid of the show/hide files toggle on the ribbon? I know we can hide the ribbon or use third party program to disable the ribbon altogether. Is there a native way to just edit ribbons?

When I Right click on an icon & select Sendto the MS Photo Editor does not show up although I put it there in "...Roaming.....Windows Sendto"
Also I deleted "Floppy drive A" in "...Roaming.....Windows Sendto" but, it still shows when I Right click on an icon & select Sendto.
I power my computer on and seems to startup fine and gets to the loading screen for windows. Then when its get to the screen where its suppose to sow the lock screen its just black. I can here the windows startup sound and can see my mouse and move it around but can't do anything. I have been trying to find a solution for the past couple days but can't get to much due to time restrictions. Deployed right now so I'm kinda limited on what resources I can use and instead of dicking around with this problem id just use my time to skype family and friends. I usually like to solve to computer problem myself for the know how but don't have the time.

They all work no problem on my netbook with Win 7 installed. Here is the pic about problem: [URL] ....
As you can see, they wont show up but they are recognized...:/
I tried reformatting them on netbook, still nothing. And tried allocating them drive letters and formatting them but error shown in pic above pops up ....
Out of those 3 USBs 2 are the same (same model)! But 1 works and other doesn't...
My laptop is top of the range spec one with Core i7, 8GB RAM, Dedicated GPU, every thing else work super fast, i am very annoyed by this one problem which i have been observing When ever i create a new folder/file or download a new file or rename a new file it does not immediately show up, if i try to open the renamed file it says windows cannot find that file (because its actually been renamed but does not yet show up in the folder), Every time i have to press F5 to refresh the folder or the desktop so the computer refreshes and shows the changes made (i.e new folder, renamed folder, new file etc...)
Is there a way so computer immediately shows the change rather than me having to close and open that folder or refresh the page every time i rename or create a file ?

I just installed Windows 8 Pro on my HP Pavillion with an AMD A8-3500M APU with Radeon HD Graphics, CPU 1.5GHz, 8G Ram, 64bit operating sys, I have a Toshiba Ext HDD only about 2 months old 1.5TB that worked just fine with Windows 7 Home Premium. but since I have installed Win 8 Pro my Device mgr sees it, but it doesn't show up in my list of drives on my file page. Also my Logitech unifying receiver is not recognized and I updated to the Win 8 driver.

I am using classic shell in Windows 8 on my home pc & laptop.
On the PC "desktop" shows in file explorer but, on the laptop it does not show, please see the left attachment as opposed to the right one of the PC.
In addition, the laptop one shows the partitions spread out as opposed to the PC.

I recently installed a virtual desktop application called Dexpot. Since then, I have noticed several unnamed applications show up in the Alt+Tab switcher. Most of them link to a metro settings page. One goes to search, another is called 'Immersive Background', and another called 'snapped desktop'.
So I uninstalled Dexpot and rebooted, but the apps are still there. I believe these apps are always running but are hidden from the regular Alt+Tab menu, and that Dexpot has messed up Z-orders or something. Here's a photo (Can't take screenshots with the switcher on) : [URL] ....

I have a query wrt adding of a program to Win 8 startup.
I went to %APPDATA%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup and copied the shortcut of the prog there, still it does not show up in my system tray when I start my Win 8.
So basically the other day i was trying to improve my ping for gaming by using youtube and changing settings in there registry , after i had made the changes no effect had been taking so i attempted to revert what i had done . Instead i have clicked the back up file of the registry i had exported and added it into my registry thinking it would replace , instead it had been added or duplicated into my registry . As i had been warned , but being unfocused and reckless i had pressed ok . After i attempted to restart my laptop the display would not work . My laptop would turn on and the power button would be on and after the Asus start up message " Persistance , Perfection , Innovation , blah blah " the display would go from black to a lighter shade of black and keep flashing . IT doesn't make it to the welcome screen , i can see my cursor for 5 seconds on one of the shades until it flashes back and forth .

Just upgraded and curious to know if there is a way to make the system search a little more fluid.
I used the WIN key to search for files mostly in Windows 7 and it would just display the file, so i only had to hit enter to open the file.

I am trying to be able to see CR2 files (RAW photo files from Canon) as thumbnail icons in Windows Explorer. I am using Windows 8.
Microsoft's codec pack (Download: Microsoft Camera Codec Pack - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details) does not work for Windows 8. When I am trying to install it, I get an error message mentioning that I can use Windows 8 Update function, but doesn't give any more information on how to do this exactly.
I have this problem were external hard drive do not show up on my PC.
First my I put my friends in and it did not work, then I went out and brought one myself (different brand) and it does not show up.
Windows automatically installed the drivers it said it even know what time of external it was. But now it doesn't appear in explorer. What should I do. It appears in the device manger list, but how do I access it?
