View 5 RepliesOn the first day I received my laptop, I went into folder options and selected to show hidden folders and show known file extensions just as I have in 7, and Vista before that.
It seems like every few times I log back into my PC, this option has changed itself and decided to hide all file extensions. The showing hidden folders option has not changed back once.
Very strange! I thought it was a registry scan that was reverting the option, but it doesn't seem to be causing the issue.
I want to setup my build to change reg key(s) so that each new user that logs on sees the file extensions in Windows Explorer
Checking this thread Show File Extensions and Hidden Files for all Users - Windows 7 Forums I hoped it would be a case of changing one key in HKLMsoftwaremicrosoftwindowscurrent versionexploreradvancedfolderhidefileext but I cannot get it to work for each new user
(Is it the same for Windows 7 and 8 or just 8 specific?)
I have recently installed Windows 8 Enterprise RTM x86 on FSC V3505 laptop and so far the OS has been working for a month. However, Recently I tried to access "Control panel -> Indexing options -> Advanced -> File types" which caused the Indexing options windows to close. Similarly, trying to access "Control panel -> Default Programs - > Associate a file type or protocol with a program" causes windows explorer to crash. The Event Viewer reports are shown below. Both options I am trying to access are supposed to show a list of file extensions. I am trying to figure out what is the reason for this behavior and possible to correct the issue without reinstalling windows from scratch. System restore is not a good option since there are only two restore points corresponding to recent time points.
Attempting to access : Control panel -> Indexing options -> Advanced -> File types causes the following error in Event Viewer :
Faulting application name: DllHost.exe, version: 6.2.9200.16384, time stamp: 0x5010888a

as you know in Windows 8 if we want to show hidden file , we should go to view then option the change folder and search option then mark the show hidden filed.
is there another easy way to do this?for example add a option in right click menu?(in win 7 shawn posted a registry key that add show hidden file to right click menu but it does not work in win 8)
I unchecked the Hidden Items but those items did show up in the system drive. What could be wrong?

View 1 Replies View RelatedThe attrib +s +h command that is used to make a file a system and hidden file is no longer working. When i try to use the command on a folder, the folder just shows up as a normal hidden folder which can be easily viewed using show hidden items in view option. It looks as if every system file is not recognizing itself as a system file.
Also every folder in my system has appeared a desktop.ini and thumbs.db folder.

My laptop is top of the range spec one with Core i7, 8GB RAM, Dedicated GPU, every thing else work super fast, i am very annoyed by this one problem which i have been observing When ever i create a new folder/file or download a new file or rename a new file it does not immediately show up, if i try to open the renamed file it says windows cannot find that file (because its actually been renamed but does not yet show up in the folder), Every time i have to press F5 to refresh the folder or the desktop so the computer refreshes and shows the changes made (i.e new folder, renamed folder, new file etc...)
Is there a way so computer immediately shows the change rather than me having to close and open that folder or refresh the page every time i rename or create a file ?
I installed Windows 8 on my home pc & laptop over XP & vista respectively.
I am using classic shell in Windows 8 on my home pc & laptop.
On the PC "desktop" shows in file explorer but, on the laptop it does not show, please see the left attachment as opposed to the right one of the PC.
In addition, the laptop one shows the partitions spread out as opposed to the PC.
How to make the laptop show things as per PC?
In File Explorer the preview window box is checked and thumbnails box is checked, but I can only preview image files. Word or Pdf files do not show up. I did a factory setting reinstall of Windows 8.1. My word documents showed up in the preview window prior to the reinstall, but not my pdf files. I use this feature frequently.

About the ribbon, I like it... One thing that bothers me though is that, it may be too easy to get to an option... namely show/hide files under the view tab. Is there a way to edit the contents of the ribbon menu, so I can get rid of the show/hide files toggle on the ribbon? I know we can hide the ribbon or use third party program to disable the ribbon altogether. Is there a native way to just edit ribbons?

I have Windows 8.1 and just noticed this behaviour after reinstalling Adobe Acrobat Pro XI. Say I have a document called A.pdf. I want to rename the file so I right-click, click rename, and type B.pdf. The file still appears in the folder as A.pdf and when I double-click it to open it, I get an error from Acrobat: "There was an error opening this document."
This only happens with PDFs, not with DOCs or TXTs.
During my everyday computer use i not only view, but actually edit content. Having a file type associated by default with a viewer/player application is very counter productive for me at times, because i have to use the right click menu every single time if i want to open a file for editing.
So, is there a way to always trigger the "open with" dialogue for certain extensions? I tried removing file association defaults for .jpg files to see if that produces the effect i was looking for, but i can't, i can only change the default association, but not remove it, which is not what i am looking for.
I am having trouble with my currently installed chrome browser and so want to uninstall it. proper way to fully restore my currently installed extensions when I re-install chrome.

Because our user accounts that say admin is a way for windows to make us think we are system admins when we arnt. Every guide in the world says once the hidden admin account is enabled it will have no login password... mine does... what do I do? This PC is fresh out of the box no password was set. I need access to the hidden admin account unless this hidden admin is someone who payed for this PC and didnt tell me? Then Id assume I have the right to use my admin account on the PC.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I upgraded to Win8.1, it asked if I wanted to automatically connect to my hidden network. I've never set up a hidden network. Sometimes it shows up in my list of WiFi connections. My computer also shows me as belonging to a workgroup, which I never joined. Then one day another network showed up called TOA24 and it was set up to automatically connect. Now it shows up every time I connect to my WiFi connection. Is it possible to determine how my computer joined a workgroup without my knowledge or created a hidden network? I have Norton Security Suite (through Comcast) running on this computer.

When in Windows 8 I verify the available created users I see an Admin account. Is this account the 'hidden' one, but made visible?
I also did the prompt cmd: net user administrator /active:yes, but I get a msg saying that there is 'no' user under the name 'administrator' ... maybe the admin user I'm seeing is a microsoft account, not a local account?
I'm having problem with my Windows 8.1 x64.
Currently i can't view my hidden files because the check box for Hidden Items always stayed untick whenever i click it.
When I turned my laptop on for the first time, it installed Windows 8 automatically, which made me think there is a hidden volume somewhere on the hard drive. I listed all the volumes using DiskPart utility and it showed me some hidden ones, as expected. What I want to do now is to explore the hidden volumes' contents, and retrieve the drivers from there if possible. But the problem is, I don't know how to list the contents of those volumes. I could've used DIR command if they were accessible through the letters, but unfortunately they don't have any letters associated with them. how I can list the contents of the hidden volumes.

And I wonder why and how I can tell windows to let me see it, the folder path is as follows:
C:UsersAll Users
Only way for me to see it is to actually type in the above in the adressfield in file explorer.
As in why and the reason it is so super hidden.
Sometimes when I restart or shut down and restart my system, the folder option somehow are being changed. I have to go to the folder options in control panel and reset the options to default. this will correct the condition until the next time restarted. I believe the condition existed before the update from 8 to 8.1 ....
