View 9 RepliesI'm having problem with my Windows 8.1 x64.
Currently i can't view my hidden files because the check box for Hidden Items always stayed untick whenever i click it.
Just upgraded and curious to know if there is a way to make the system search a little more fluid.
I used the WIN key to search for files mostly in Windows 7 and it would just display the file, so i only had to hit enter to open the file.
Now i get
Apps
Settings
Files
I need to search, then click files.
Is there a way to just show all items for a search term.
as you know in Windows 8 if we want to show hidden file , we should go to view then option the change folder and search option then mark the show hidden filed.
is there another easy way to do this?for example add a option in right click menu?(in win 7 shawn posted a registry key that add show hidden file to right click menu but it does not work in win 8)
Can Not Untick Show File Name Extensions in windows file explorer view options neither hidden items... I cant deselect them D:

Have 2 hard drives (SSDs).
Drive 1 : OS Win 8.1 for general web, office and junk running
Drive 2 : OS Win 8.1 for tweaked hobby work; Audio recording etc
Whilst I wish to not physically disconnect the drives on each boot. I would like to have the alternative drive hidden and not impacted when the other drive is running for the OS.Boot up from Drive 1 this currently shows as Drive C: and the secondary drive with the OS installed as D:
Boot up from Drive 2 this currently shows as Drive C: and the secondary drive with the OS installed as D:
End aim
Boot up from Drive 1 this currently shows as Drive C: and the secondary drive with the OS installed not running or showing on the system and vice versa. Is the online offline function what I need to use or is this going to put the drive offline for the system as a whole.
The program Acronis True Image failed when attempting to clone win 8.1 C drive. The destination disk is now hidden in File Explorer but is present in Disk Management (and in Device Manager). The Disk Management command "Change Drive Letter ..." is grayed out. How can I unhide the drive?
The drive in question appears in attached screen shots as Disk 6 but is missing from Explorer.
The attrib +s +h command that is used to make a file a system and hidden file is no longer working. When i try to use the command on a folder, the folder just shows up as a normal hidden folder which can be easily viewed using show hidden items in view option. It looks as if every system file is not recognizing itself as a system file.
Also every folder in my system has appeared a desktop.ini and thumbs.db folder.
I am running Windows 8- 64 bit
2 out of 3 USBs worked on Win 7 on same PC but wont after installing Win 8.
They all work no problem on my netbook with Win 7 installed. Here is the pic about problem: [URL] ....
As you can see, they wont show up but they are recognized...:/
I tried reformatting them on netbook, still nothing. And tried allocating them drive letters and formatting them but error shown in pic above pops up ....
Out of those 3 USBs 2 are the same (same model)! But 1 works and other doesn't...

I live in an apt building that has freeWIFI. There are about 4 wifi connections Ican switch to when one is lagging. I would like to see the number of usersaccessing each connections.
Is there any freeware system monitoring tool available that will show me #number of users on each wifi connected in my building. I am running Win 8.
Either with my startup today, or sometime in the last day or two, all my drives/partitions in Windows Explorer (and XYplorer) have lost their labels and are now showing as "Local Disk." Looking in Windows 8 Computer Management and EaseUs Partition Manager, the labels are there, as shown in the screenshot. I ran all three main repair modules of Yamicsoft Windows 8 Manager and there have been a few reboots, but still the same.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm planning on moving an SSD system drive from a laptop that is starting to experience difficulties to a desktop PC.
I'm retired now and my laptop never moves off my desk, so this has offered an opportunity to upgrade at little expense. My laptop is an HP Compaq Presario CQ61, dual core Pentium 4 T4300 2.1GHz with 2 x 120GB SSD drives installed.
The desktop I want to upgrade with the SSD drives is an HP DX6120 Pentium 4 HTT 3.2GHz unit that I've picked up very cheap.
I know a clean install of either Windows 7 or Windows 8 would be best practice, but is there a way I could just transfer the disk to the PC ?
I've installed Windows 8 starting the installer from Windows 8 RP and I've just noticed that it picked up the drive letters from the old system. Now my system drive is Y instead of C , because in the old system that partition was Y. If I try to change the drive letter in the Drive Management it gives an error. how to change system drive letter in Windows 8 RTM?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI created the system backup (bit copy) in my Win 8.1 Pro and saved it to my internal HDD.
It is possible to move it now to another drive (e.g. to NAS)?
I try to do this manually, but even though I can open the folder "WindowsImageBackup" and I see several saved files in included folders I cannot manipulate with them.
I have a VHDX which I sometimes boot from and sometimes use as a VM in Hyper V. It has Windows installed on the default C: drive.
This is somewhat confusing as the C: may be the original C: drive or the VHDX C: drive (with the original C: drive renamed to H: in my case). I want C: to always be the native boot and T: (for example) to always be the boot for the VHDX.
Can I change the VHDX to have Windows installed to say T:? I was thinking of renaming all instances of C: to T: in the registry and updating BCDEDIT. It is not possible to change system disk in disk management.
If this is not possible can I re-install windows on the VHDX and specify a different letter and C:?
This is how it looks when booting from VHDX:
Code:
DISKPART> list disk Disk ###
Status Size Free Dyn Gpt
-------- ------------- ------- ------- --- ---
Disk 0 Online 465 GB 1024 KB
Disk 1 Online 931 GB 31 GB *
Disk 2 Online 483 MB 0 B
Disk 3 Online 65 GB 381 MB
In few days I will have my new computer with Windows 8.1, and I wonder what solution would be the best for easy backing up and restoring of system drive in the new machine. For last 5 years I've been using Acronis to create an image of entire partition c: , with windows and all my crucial software, and if only my system felt slow or there was too many stuff installed, I simply restored it from this image (of course app data was moved to d:, so that no settings of my programs were replaced). From time to time I was making new image, so that it was always ready to work 'out of the box' with all the updates etc..
Any different solution to accomplish the same as I don't want to move app data to d: any more because I'll have ssd drive for my system, and I would prefer to have it all in one partition, so my solution will no longer be effective. Is there any native Windows 8 solution for system backup and is it any good? Or maybe I could simply backup "windows" and "program files" folders, and restore just them. Would it be as effective as restoring entire partition?
I can't create a simple text file and place it on my C: drive in Win 8.1 - says that I don't have permission. The properties of the drive show that I do - full control, every class of user. Am I missing something really simple?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI wish to purchase a new laptop that has Windows 8 OEM pre-installed on a 256GB SSD and a recovery partition. I would like to move the recovery partition to an USB drive using the feature available in Windows 8 and create another partition on the SSD for a different OS (linux). I have several questions:
1. Is there any difference between a recovery USB and the recovery partition on the SSD?
2. [Answered] If I completely wipe the original Windows 8 installation can I restore my system using the USB drive?
3. [Answered] During recovery, can I chose on what partition I want to install Windows 8 or create a new partition for it (similarly to a fresh install) or is the whole thing done automatically? I want to know if the recovery process wipes the whole SSD or only the Windows partition and if my other partitions will be left intact (I can live with it overriding the bootloader).
4. If I shrink the Windows 8 partition, can I still perform the recovery? (assuming that I have enough space for the installation).
I built a large desktop system a few years back and it's been upgraded with various bits and pieces including an SSD boot drive. I'm looking at putting together a much smaller system in a Shuttle XH61V and I want to use my existing 2.5" SSD. Can I just put the SSD in and clean install Win 8 from the original system builder disk I bought or will something go wrong because there's already an installation on the drive?
View 7 Replies View Related I am having problems with system imaging my Windows 8 machine to an external hardrive via a usb (??) cable.
First, as mentioned in another thread is the exceptionally long time. The external drive is a WD 1TB BTW. I have two older hardrives on the computer. Just installed the second, which at this time is not being used. Trying several several programs, Paragon Free, Easeus, Macrium Reflect and the built in Windows Backup I was getting 14 hour estimates.
The actual issue I wish to resolve is that during a over 9 hour backup of the primary drive with approx. 34GBs, I noted what appears to be a folder with the Windows backup icon called the name of my computer on my external drive. It contains approximately 3GBs of data in multiple folders. Windows backup is turned off. I did not have this file on the external hardrive and I didn't initiate the OS to perform this. It showed no indication of running and occurred during the Macrium backup.
Recently i upgraded my system to windows 8..N after clean install i backed up the copy of my C drive (Includes System Image) to my external 2TB Hard Drive.. It took around 250GB of hard drive space..Now since i am running out of space i decided to delete the back up copy from My hard drive.. I deleted WindowsImageBackup and all associated files using control panel..But around 150GB space is missing(not visible) from my external Hard Drive..
As You can see from attached pic that 125 GB free out of 1.81TB..But size of all files including hidden files is 1.53TB..
