All Files Show Read Only In Properties - Cannot Change
Jan 6, 2013
Virtually every file shows read only when I right click on it and choose properties. In uncheck read only, then click apply and choose applies to all subfolders and files. Windows appears to change the properties (a window opens up and a green progress bar fills). But if I click OK and close properties, when I look at properties again, they are shown as read only again.
This happens both when I am logged in under my user name, as well as if I log in as administrator.
The only difficulty it's created so far was when attempting ti embed a cover art JPG into an MP3 file in my music library.
I am trying to import my contacts to the phone, which I gather can be done with a bluetooth connection via some sort of PIM that the bluetooth software recognizes. For the life of me I can't find any explicit reference to any particular PIM software that the Windows 8 bluetooth Properties dialog recognizes. Or, have I misunderstood the capabilities here? Do I have to buy and install Outlook?
I am unfortunately using Thunderbird as email & contact manager, but I've exported my contacts via .csv in the past so If I can find the appropriately compatible PIM for Windows 8 Bluetooth I think I can muddle through.
I need to change some setting in my UEFI/BIOS but it is stuck in ready only mode. All options are blanked out except for "exit". How can I get it to let me edit the settings again?
I have windows 8.1 on a computer I am just trying to start using. However, when I transfer any of my personal files from the old computer they all end up as read-only. I try to change them, but they always revert back to read-only. The directories in the new computer are classified as read-only also, and cannot be changed. How can I solve this?
So I have an ASUS transformer, windows 8 and when I plug in my USB, the confirmation sound I hear but it does not appear as a storage on the My PC file page. The USB is brand new and it worked before, its just now I can't open any files
When I click photos a screen comes up that says the following "All your photo sources are hidden.to show some change your settings" What do I need to correct this so when I click photos the photos are shown?
as you know in Windows 8 if we want to show hidden file , we should go to view then option the change folder and search option then mark the show hidden filed.
is there another easy way to do this?for example add a option in right click menu?(in win 7 shawn posted a registry key that add show hidden file to right click menu but it does not work in win 8)
I have a fresh install of Windows 8 on my desktop computer. However I've run into some major issues with accessing my NAS (Media Server/Hard Drive)
#1 - I cannot for the life of me map my NAS as a network drive anymore.
#2 - This the important one, I can't see over 80% of the files stored on my NAS, only the most recently updated ones. I can see them just fine from my brothers laptop that came preinstalled with Windows 8, and no issues whatsoever with other computers on the networks on Win 7. Is this an issue with fresh installs? If so how can I remedy this?
PDF files on my laptop show thumbnail previews erratically. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. In the attached screenshot, you can see that Word is showing nicely but the PDF file won't. Default app is Reader (the Metro app).
In File Explorer the preview window box is checked and thumbnails box is checked, but I can only preview image files. Word or Pdf files do not show up. I did a factory setting reinstall of Windows 8.1. My word documents showed up in the preview window prior to the reinstall, but not my pdf files. I use this feature frequently.

I must have made an error upon set-up. Every time I connect a smart phone or tablet, a "windows explorer" window opens, showing the files on the device. I'd like to have the system just do nothing when I connect, but I can not seem to find out how to manage that option. I imagine it would be easy, if I could find it.
About the ribbon, I like it... One thing that bothers me though is that, it may be too easy to get to an option... namely show/hide files under the view tab. Is there a way to edit the contents of the ribbon menu, so I can get rid of the show/hide files toggle on the ribbon? I know we can hide the ribbon or use third party program to disable the ribbon altogether. Is there a native way to just edit ribbons?
If I download a .PDF document and then open it from the browser (Chrome) downloads area, the PDF is opened using the inbuilt Windows 8 PDF viewer in the Metro interface. I would like to change that so I can open it using a PDF viewer of my choice (say Nitro for example) and preferably on the desktop instead of metro.
I am running Windows 8 64-Bit on a new Advent Monza T100 laptop.
I am unable to make changes to Program Files (x86) which is very annoying as this means I have to install programs to my desktop.
When I try to move something into Program Files (x86) I am greeted by the usual 'You need permission to perform this action' message.
I have tried to Take Ownership of the folder using advice from many different forums, however my problem seems to be unique because I am not able to change the ownership from TrustedInstaller to Administrators.
When I click 'Change' the window transforms into this...
My laptop is defaulting e-mail attachments and most programs to open in windows picture viewer, and if it isn't a picture I am unable to view the file without saving it and selecting 'open with'
How I can just get it to open in the appropriate program first time?
I am unable to change any permission for any folder . every option that supposed to be available for setting the permission is gray out!! , for some of my files I see the owner is "unable to display the current owner". The problem is the same for every single folder and file. I checked other systems (friends laptops and desktops) and they are working just fine ! but I am just unable to modify any permission for any folder or file !! even I tried to change the owner but it didn't worked !
But I'm afraid there is not a setting in Windows 8 to get this done. Okay, then I handle the programs seperately! Until Windows 8 I could always rightclick a shortcut, then get "Properties", then I chose "Maximized". But to my unpleasant surprise I only get the latest documents (Which is very handy indeed!), and a choice to "Loosen the program of the taskbar".
I cannot seem to get the "taskbar and navigation properties" pane, only the "taskbar properties" pane. I am running as administrator and have upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 on a new laptap that I have just purchased, but am still having trouble getting the "taskbar and navigation properties" when I right click the taskbar.
The "taskbar properties" only gives me three tabs ie. taskbar, jump lists and properties, but I need to access the navigation tab on the "taskbar and navigation properties" pane.
Just as it says, if I right click on "Properties" in My Computer and try to pull up the System Information sheet, the whole desktop shuts down and then re-opens.
I am running an AMD Athlon 4400+, overclocked 7%. I am going to set it back to 5% and see if this continues.
I have this entry in my system log:

My previous OS was Windows 7 64-bit. I used rip my favorite music tracks and was able to edit the details in the Details tab of the Properties window after right-clicking on the file name. The system hardware is the same. OS is now Windows 8 64-bit. But when I open the mp3 file's property window and go to the details tab, I get fewer options in detail and I CANNOT edit any one of them. I have run sfc - no problem. I have opened the Explorer as Administrator and still the same issue. Here's the screen capture:
I am the sole user of the desktop PC. And that I have another PC at another place with same configuration also running Win 8 64-bit. On that PC for the same file I see more details on the screen and I can edit the fields. I might post the capture from that PC later when I go there. I also ran the mp3Tag to get over the possible issue with ID3 tags.
First of all I want to say that this is not much big of a deal to me but still annoying nonetheless. I noticed that in some scenarios, for some reason, the "Properties" option in the rightclick menu of a file doesn't do anything when clicked on. You'd expect that a properties box of the concerning file would show up but nothing is happening. So far I noticed this in the following 2 scenarios:
1. When selecting multiple files in the Recycle Bin at once and then right click and choose Properties. Selecting only one file in the recycle bin and clicking Properties does work normally. 2. When right clicking on a picture that is shown with Windows Photo Viewer and then choosing Properties.
Are these bugs that Microsoft developers might have missed or is my PC at fault here? I'm running Windows 8.1 Pro x64 with Medica Center.
I am using a Dell laptop with Windows 8 Home. The file Properties show strange symbol-type characters where there should be numbers etc. See Screenshot...
It's been like this for a while and I have probably installed half a dozen programs etc. so I don't know what did it. I don't want to upgrade to v.8.1 as it took me ages to get a 3rd party Start button set up and 8.1 over-writes it I rolled back to a previous image of v.8.0 (True Image not System Restore).
I have just recently acquired a brand new laptop running Windows 8, and I'm experiencing an issue with editing the details of MP3 files. I can right-click any MP3 to open its properties and access the Details tab, but when I click on the fields for the different tags, nothing happens.
I don't recall ever having this issue on my previous laptop with Windows Vista, so I'm at loss trying to understand what is going on here. I'm not very tech savvy about the subject of permissions and accessibility, but it doesn't really seem to be related to that. The files are listed under my local user directory.
I am unable to access system properties of my windows 8 pro. When i right click on My Computer icon and click Properties, System Properties window open for a second and immediately closes. I have the same problem even if i try to open System Properties from Control Panel.
I found out that, It's the windows update KB2871389..i uninstalled it from Windows update and "system properties" now ok.
I have an interesting issue in the windows 8 metro menu. When I right click an icon you normaly get a properties bar pop up on the bottom where you can change tile size, pin to start etc. This bar is no longer appearing.
