View 1 RepliesHere is what happened to me in the past couple of days. I was using the latest beta drivers for my GTX 560 and apparently Windows 8 downloaded and installed either a previous driver or a corrupt driver and automatically installed it. So the next day I do my typical daily reboot and I get nothing but a black screen with no response at the part where I sign in.
So after researching on my phone, I kind of came to the conclusion that I described above. I downloaded Windows 8 today (since I did a digital upgrade from Windows 7) just to put it on a flash drive so I can refresh my PC. After refreshing my PC, I was glad to see the lock screen, sign-in screen, etc.
I have tried SFC /scannow, messing around with boot up services, and running apps.diagcab. Nothing is working! NVIDIA update components refuses to install as well and I'm sure other things aren't working properly.
I have a Toshiba (satellite) laptop and it has just been upgraded to Windows 8.1. I made recovery discs before the upgrade but would like to backup again after the upgrade so i don't have to revert to the factory set-up or refresh option as I have already had that experience and i don't want to go that route again! My laptop is only 9months old & running fine so far with no issues, i can back-up my documents etc to my flash drive but i would like to back up, 'or do you call it copying', the whole setup so if i have a problem i can re-install the whole lot as it stands from today. I have increased the system restore percentage bar to allow more restores points as another safety option.

View 1 Replies View Relatedhow to rebuilt user with broken system settings and keep directory structure (for scripts and non -windows friendly software) and hopefully user name.
Problem: Main user profile is broken, flat out broken. After login the screen starts flashing and it gets worse from there. I can run everything and not duplicate the error message. I always create a pristine user when I do an OS install. Administrator is OK, but it has saved me more than once to have the regular admin-type account. Since I have the nice, fluffy, running profile now I would like to learn just where is it reading these files that tell it bad things.
Another is a broken video driver (sounds were Windows Default on the working one, I told it no sounds in light of what I read) Both profiles are running the exact desktop wallpaper changer, it is working fine on the one account. I couldn't turn it off anyway on the bad account, I can't get to any of the settings windows, regedit, control panel items (that I want) are not running. Same errors as above.
I assume the calls are in the .appdata directory or perhaps the registry. I used to know how to open another user's registry in regedit but can't figure it out in Windows 8. Is there a way to tell it only to run particular services for a certain user, I can't see the services module when in the broken profile, again, same type of errors as before. Not sure which info you want on the machine or how you get it.

Today when I played my favorite game ( entropia universe), I got a message from my game saying that I have low ram, I checked on the Ctrl alt del thing and I was shocked that only 3.8 gb ram was usable when i have 8 gb ram and using 64 bit system. So here comes to my first question... Why would this happen?
So I happened to follow a tutorial and turned on the maximum ram checkbox in the advanced settings in boot tab in msconfig. However when I first reboot I got the session 3 initialisation failed BSOD. The second time and third time and so on and so forth I got bad system config info, which turned my computer into a reboot loop. Second question, why would this happen?
My experience similar to this unlucky fellow : Win 8 BSOD : BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO (Details available)SOS
so I followed the guide in the thread and tried to recreate my BCD. I successfully got into the advanced setup options ( I think it is called this ?) by pressing shift +f8.
However I still failed as I was locked there. Every option including opening the command prompt is blocked because it said that operating these options needed administrative rights which I have in my hands. However the ASO said that it can't find any administrative accounts in my computer. Third question , why would this happen?
So now my computer fell into another loop. Whenever I started my computer it went into the ASO and wouldn't get away from it. And can't even see the lovely face in BSOD.
I am am using windows 8.1 in amd fx 8150 and 8 gb ram, computer was somehow normal with occasional freezing ( 1-2 times a month ).
The case is pretty much, having to push down (with not much force) where the harddrive and RAM is and where the enter key is whilst pressing the power button, sometimes this doesn't work, it normally turns on then turns off within a second, once it turns on it's fine but if it gets moved the slightest bit it just turns off, i've opened it up, checked the HDD connection and it seems okay, check the wiring of the laptop and it's all fine and the RAM is in snug, the screws are all in

Select: Tasks / Settings / General / Startup and Window Behavior
At this location I should see the option to "Stay on Top" but the only options available are;
1) Show a warning before displaying Web pages that are not designed for WMC
2) Show taskbar notifications
When I select about in WMC the following info is displayed;

Windows 8.1 refuses to sleep" thread, I'm trying to configure my computer so that it never sleeps, hibernates, or shuts down unless I specifically ask it to - or if it's so starved for energy that shutting down is the only way to ensure that nothing gets damaged. The machine is never unplugged, so it should never have any reason to shut down, short of a power failure. I've had problems with this intermittently since I got this computer, and I thought I had it fixed, but last week the problem started again. The attached file is a full transcript of the Power Options Control Panel; as you can tell by how long I spent making this transcript, I've been trying to track this down for quite a while. View 9 Replies View RelatedMy PC ignores all the power plan settings and hibernates after approximately 5 minutes without input. The computer also ignores active background processes.
My Windows Home Server backups are failing because the PC wakes up for the scheduled backup, but then ignores the process and goes to sleep in the middle of the backup. It also means that I cannot listen to internet radio or watch video unless I keep the PC awake with keyboard/mouse input.
This problem appears to have started after I installed the 8.1 update for Windows. I've tried adjusing all the power plan settings, creating a new power plan, enabling and disabling screen savers, etc.
What software (besides high performance mode in windows control panel) can lock the CPU at it's highest frequency?
My CPU is Intel Celeron Quad Core 2.00Ghz but it has a "burst" frequency up to 2.41Ghz (similar to turbo boost) and I would like it to stay at it's highest frequency since I have no worries about overheating (never goes above 42* C at full load).
The problem is the speed constantly changes between 2.00Ghz 2.03Ghz 2.07Ghz (and so on etc... in between 2.00Ghz and 2.41Ghz). And my browser speed constantly goes up and down webpages stalling and going fast causing stuttering so I wonder what software can remedy this little problem?
Or if there is some kind of overclocking software that would do something similar to locking the frequency? Tried all kinds of FSB-related tools but nada so far.

Yesterday my laptop was until at night when I was editing some text file, it suddenly hang, (Not exactly because edit text file cause this error, just to clarify what I was doing) fine, then I was frustrated, so I shutdown my laptop and went to sleep. But today when I startup my laptop, after the logo, I encounter blackscreen, which stays on like that. So I force shutdown my laptop and then go into advance mode. I boot to safe mode and it seems to be fine, no freezing or hang or whatever it is. But if I want to boot normally the blackscreen would appear. And under Device Manager the Generic PnP Monitor have yellow !.

When I play games or use any sort of full screen program, it refuse to stay in full screen and flickers to the desktop after a 10-30 minute period...I'm aware this is probably another program trying to take control, but I can't seem to pin it down. View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set Chrome as my default browser and have it open in Desktop mode, but it always opens in Metro Mode if it's the default. I've tried the "Relaunch Chrome in the desktop" (lots of times), but it just beeps and stays in Metro mode. This used to work, but it suddenly changed a few weeks ago, and I simply can't work out how to get it back. I didn't change anything. (Windows or Chrome may have behind the scenes, but I didn't fiddle with any of the levers). Chrome just started launching in Metro mode one morning, and nothing I do will change that if it's the default.
The only way I can open Chrome in Desktop Mode is to set IE as the the default browser. And that is most definitely not what I want. I'm a web dev, and love the Chrome dev tools, so want it as the default.
To make things even more confusing, I've got 2 Win 8.1 machines side by side, and Chrome works exactly as I want on one of them, and not on the other. I've looked everywhere I can think of, and both systems are set up identically, from what I can see.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a brand new Dell M6700 laptop with Windows 8, which seems to have an extremely annoying bug or feature. While working I usually have many windows open in desktop mode, such as Visual Studio, Outlook, remote desktop etc. Every now and then some of the windows decides to stay on top of the window stack. This could be a nice feature in some cases, but usually it is just bloody annoying, as e.g. when creating new email the new mail window may be buried under Outlook itself, which has for some reason decided to stay on top.
This staying-on-top behavior has occurred with multiple software including windows explorer, remote desktop, outlook and visual studio. So far I have not been able to figure out how to reproduce this, it seems to happen randomly. Usually the software has to be restarted to resume normal behavior, but at least once the window has resumed normal behavior without restarting.
Is this is a normal feature in Windows 8? Is there some weird keystroke or gesture which I happen to activate without knowing it? Could it be some third party software, which might be already installed on brand new Dell laptops? I know there are some software to force windows to stay on top, but I have not installed such.
Why Windows 8.1 is giving me so many issues. My laptop is unable to stay connected to the wifi for long and sometimes I am unable to connect. My phone and tablet stay connected to the wifi while my laptop can't. I tried all the remedies for it and yet it has issues. Is it because I had installed spotflux and tunnel bear on my laptop?
