Setup Installation :: Reinstalled OS / No Longer Detecting Drives Properly
Dec 30, 2013
I was prompted by my OS last week to install 8.1 because it was gonna be "great!" so I did and on reboot, was greeted with a bsod. My computer dude said that it was time for a reinstall, so that's what I did during the course of the day. It's a fresh install, fully updated (8.1). I have three drives attached; two 500 GB disks and a 250GB. The computer is seeing one of the 500GB and the 250GB disks properly, but the other 500GB is only showing one partition it seems. It's labeled system reserve and is 350MB in size.
My virtual machines are housed on the other partition and I could really use them. How do I get the Windows install to allow me access to the whole drive?

Ok, I have an SSD. Windows 8 Consumer preview was installed on it. I then partitioned it in half in Consumer Preview. I then installed Windows 7 on the newly partitioned fresh half of the SSD. When I'd boot up I would get the usual BIOS black type screen asking whether I wanted to boot W7 or Windows 8 with a 30 seconds timer. PERFECT.
So today I installed Windows 8 Pro, I formatted the Windows 8 Consumer Preview half of the SSD using the install disk before installing Windows 8 Pro.
So now I have Windows 8 Pro on one half of the partition, W7 remained untouched on the other half. HOWEVER, when I boot now it automatically boots to Windows 8 Pro and gives me no option to choose what OS I want to load !_!

When I installed my copy of windows 8 using a dvd, It installed a recovery partition during the installation. This partition allowed me to do things such as create a recovery drive, and use startup repair, all without needing to insert an installation disk. For some reason, this recovery partition is no longer working. I can't create a recovery drive without being told to insert installation media, and there are no troubleshooting settings when I launch "advanced startup". I noticed this after I deleted all of the bcd bootloader entries in easybcd, and tried to create a recovery drive. I don't know if deleting those entries could have affected windows but I think it might have something to do with it.
The recovery partition is still there, and the files in it are still there.

not sure if this has been posted but download this update from the Ms site if your watermark with this message doesn't disappear after you've activated your Windows 8.1 installation.
Download Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB2902864) from Official Microsoft Download Center
I got the message after updating an HP sleekbook 4 laptop to Windows 8.1 enterprise (TechNet version from ISO) from the Windows 8 pro that was pre-installed with the laptop (plus all the other zillion bits of bloat /ad / crapware).-- I disabled protected boot -- more trouble than it's worth - especially if you are testing OS'es -- but KEPT the UEFI .

I have Win 7 on a 60gb ssd hard drive. I would like to put another 60gb ssd drive in my computer and run win 8 off of this. Is it possible to run this as a dual boot system. Will I get the option to boot into either when I boot up.

Currently I have a machine with Windows 8 pre-installed already. But now I don't like Windows 8 as much because certain programs I want to use requires Windows 7. Though I would still like to keep Windows 8 because it's licensed. I have an extra hard drive lying around with Windows 7 loaded in it already. Now I would like to dual boot between these two drives. Do I have to turn off Secure Boot and change the boot orders around to boot the Windows 7 hard drive?

I currently have a machine installed with Windows 8 pro 64 bit installed on one Samsung 840 pro SSD. Works great. I recently added a second Crucial m4 SSD and would like to install Linux on it... I am having major issues doing so mainly because of UEFI... and when installing Linux it does not see Windows 8 installed on any drive therefore making it rather difficult to install both OSes.

I tried restoring my computer using Easeus backup, but an error occurred during the restoration process. I've managed to fix it by doing diskpart /fixmbr and then using the windows dvd automated repair, however, what I ended up with is this:
So there are now two visible drives on my PC - C and Q (system reserved), and it doesn't see the data drive.
What I want to do is to make the data drive visible, and merge the C and Q drives into one (or make Q invisible), if that is possible. So, how do I do that?

yesterday my PC stopped booting normally and now will rarely detect my SSD when booting leaving me with a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left until it reboots again. I have spent most of the day trying to troubleshoot this issue but I am baffled by this, it seems completely random if it will detect the drive and boot to it. My best guess is that the SATA controller on the motherboard is responsible and is failing. Is there anything else that could be causing this?
System:
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
AMD Phenom II X4 965
8.00GB DDR3 @ 667MHz
MSI 760GM-P34(FX) <--- Very cheap MB
ATI Radeon HD 7950 3GB
223GB INTEL SSDSC2CT240A3
931GB Seagate ST1000DM003-1CH162
Edit: I ran a full diagnostic scan using Intel's SSD Toolbox but didn't find any issues.

recently my windows 7's some system files got corrupt . won't start after windows logo (when the arrow shows up=>always bsod, even in safemode). so I decided to format C and install fresh windows 8.
.
Then I had four partitions
C:windows(7)
D:Softwares
E:Games
F:Mix Stuff.
My plan was to format C (of course for windows 8) and D (as C had only 20Gb space so I thought I would also format D 46Gb and give C 45Gb and D 20-21Gb as it was useless to me and contained only a bunch of crappy softwares ). Well, it FAILED here's how. after formatting C and D I deleted them thinking that boths unallocated space will merge. but it DID'NT. After deleting I tried creating new partition on D but it FAILED "we cannot create create new partition" (search google 'cause others also sometimes have this ****** error many times). Then I did same thing with C and it WORKED. I had to give it again 20Gb (maximum) - NO CHOICE. Then I installed Windows 8 on C. (thinking I will later format D on desktop)
.
Now here's the scenario : I DO NOT WANT TO FORMAT E: AND F: AS IT CONTAINS MY PRECIOUS DATA.
After the startup config, 'Startup' came up I went to Desktop then Computer and then wow what?
Only C: I found there 7.67Gb free of 19.5GB. Where are others gone .
UPDATE :. I went to disk management and saw only (C:) other 138Gb (something) was unallocated space .Then just for checking I booted my pc from windows installation usb and on the drive screen I saw C 19.5-20Gb and same Unallocated space 138Gb.

I recently purchased a new Dell XPS laptop with SSD. The first thing I did after receiving it was to split the C drive into two using Easeus Partition Manager. Probably due to this, neither Windows nor the Dell Backup & Recovery software detect the recovery partition any more.
When I launch Windows built in recovery creator, it's 'Copy the recovery partition from the PC to the recovery drive' option is grayed out. If I click next, it would say 'We can't create a recovery drive on this PC. Some required files are missing'.
Dell Backup and Recovery says 'Corrupted Environment. Dell Backup and Recovery has not been able to detect the Recovery Partition on this computer. It may be missing or corrupted." (see screenshots below). One thing I am 100% sure is that the recovery partition is present and is intact. I was able to create a bootable USB using Dell Backup and Recovery (this is different from a full recovery media in the sense that the laptop will boot from USB, and then recover from the recovery partition). Using this USB, I was able to restore the OS properly. Unfortunately, even after this factory restore, Windows doesn't detect the recovery partition.
1. Output of diskpart
Here, partition 4 and partition 9 both have WinRE.wim. Partition 4 also has Reagent.xml. Both have the GUID same, but offset is different.
2. Output of various commands
Code: reagentc /disable
successful
Code: reagentc /info & reagentc /enable
REAGENTC.EXE: Operation failed: 3
REAGENTC.EXE: An error has occurred.
Code: recimg /showcurrent The recovery image configuration cannot be found. The system cannot access the configuration file. Error Code - 0x80070002
3. I also tried modifying the c:WindowsSystem32ReAgent.xml file without success. Based on the output of 'diskpart detail partition' shown below, I updated the file.
Attempt 1:
Attempt 2:
Code: Here, 'WinRe.wim' is located in 'Partition 9WindowsRecovery'. That's why I used 'WindowsRecovery' as the 'WinreLocation path'.
Neither of these worked.

I'm having some problems with my PC. Here is the model of my PC "Asus Desktop: M51AC".
So basically what's going on is I did a fresh re install of my operating system Windows 8 which came with the PC installed. Everything went fine, everything was working! I did some updates and then it fails, there was a bunch including 51 updates and Windows 8.1 so it was downloading. At the installation part it shows a error. I restarted my PC and I noticed I wasn't connected to the internet. I updated all my drivers, and when it crashed it showed a yellow mark by these devices.
realtek pcie gbe family controller
sm bus controller
sm bus
Those were the only ones with a yellow mark by it. I fixed it by installing the latest drivers, the error code was error code 10 could not start, it was for all of these devices. I installed the latest drivers now it doesn't show the errors but yet it still does not work, and my PC doesn't detect the Ethernet cable from my router anymore. I searched this on every forum, and used google lol, for about 3-4 hours now over a update failing. I re-installed my OS again and it still does not work. I think it blew a fuse or something and it's not detecting it, I dont honestly know. I went in command prompt and pinged 127.0.0.1 and received 4 packets somehow which is odd.
Here is a video also I recorded:

I'm in Window 8 on a Toshiba L855-S5112 Satellite laptop. It's an inexpensive laptop, which was most likely my first mistake.
But... My wireless sees nothing, and when I check the device manager for the network adapter info, it's enabled and it reports that it's working fine. the wifi switch is definitely set to on. With "show hidden devices" turned on, this is what I see for network adaptors:

So I'm rolling along the internet and I start noticing that the wifi bars in the lower corner have gone down to 4. My internet is running slower and when I log on and play online games, the local server which gave me a 50 ping is now jumped up to about 300-800 easily...
So I run trouble shooter (and malware bytes) and this gem pops up:
"Windows cannot automatically detect this network's proxy settings."
I run google chrome as my internet browser, but as of late Norton has been blocking chrome and my wife started using Internet Explorer...but when we disable Norton, Chrome works fine.

Here's my issue; I am a math and science teacher in a public middle school and am outfitting my class with thirty brand-new Lenovo touch computers. I consider myself above-average savvy with computers, having worked with every version of Windows extensively since the late 80s and DOS. The only OS that I haven't spent much time on is Windows 8.
These computers are all brand-new and of course have legal copies of Windows 8 -- irritatingly, though not yet updated to 8.1. Soo...It took me a larger part of one day just to get ONE of these computers ready for class use. It involved several stages of the Windows update/reboot dance, followed by removing myriad unneeded bloatware applications, setting up multiple child accounts on the machine, and finally installing some freeware educational materials needed for instruction. It was all unbelievably tedious!
I turned around and look at all the remaining twenty-nine computers with dread. Obviously I'm trying to work out some kind of shortcut to avoid having to spend my whole summer updating each of the new machines individually. In an ideal world, I would make some sort of image of the machine that I just spent several hours updating/configuring, and then replicate that across the other twenty-nine. In terms of hardware, this shouldn't be a problem since all of the machines are exactly the same make and model. But I anticipate other problems such as, for example, the serial number of the Windows version and the computer name will then be the same on all the machines and have to be adjusted. There very well could be other issues with replicated serial numbers, etc.
I'm thinking maybe I just have to bite the bullet and work at each individual computer one of the time. And then image them individually so that when the kids mess around with them, I can do an easy restore. How I could make this work?

I have a HP Envy 4 Ultrabook and I want to install Windows 8 from scratch, I put the installation files on a flash drive from a DVD of Win 8 I had, but when I go to install it, it says the "We couldn't find any drives". I have tried using DiskPart within the CMD as well, but it only finds my flash drive when I run list disk. Also, my drives are completely formatted, and I accidentally wiped the recovery partition. I tried with a USB of Win 8 Pro, and it was fine, showing all of my drives correctly, but that version is linked to another PC, so I can't install it. Also, I booted into a Linux Mint live CD and tried to install it, it sees my hard drive correctly, but the Windows install does not, I can't figure this out, never encountered it before. Is Linux my only option at this point?

My DVD is Windows 7 ultimate X 32, X 64..
No matter what i cant boot form my USB /U E Fl /WIN 7 pen drive.seems like its not recognized or drivers for the USB chip set not installed.. Of course using the O E M DVD of win 7 fails. because of the G P T style.

I am trying to upgrade from windows 8 pro to windows 8.1 on a samsung laptop. The download completes and installation starts.
After a while the following message appears "you cant install windows on a usb flash drive with setup"
I am not actually trying to install to a flash drive. I contacted Microsoft and after 5 hours they said that I should connect to the internet with a cable and not by wireless in order to solve the problem (this didn't work of course and I had told them that it was an install problem and not a download problem).
