Setup Installation :: Removing Vista From Dual Boot With Win8
Aug 12, 2013I have a Windows 8 / Vista dual boot - Windows 8 on SSD on C: and Vista on HDD on D: (data only on E: ) I have not used Vista since installing Windows 8 and now want to remove to free up some space and remove dual boot
Is there an option to keep my files on the drive but simply remove the Vista OS folder and remove the dual boot option? Or do I need to follow process here and "delete volume" and then copy all the files across again from backup?
If I do need to "delete volume" my first issue is that this option is greyed out and cannot be selected for D: drive? How can I sort this? also what do I do with 11GB recovery partition and 3.54GB OEM partition?

Brand new Asus CM6870 desktop
2 TB HD
16 GB RAM
Win 8 Core (originally installed by Asus)
Motherboard; Asus P8H77-M Pro (AMI BIOS 0606)
Asus did not supply and will not supply original Win 8 media
I also purchased an OCZ SSD with the intention of moving Win 8 to the SSD. The exisiting HD is installed as a UEFI device and I wanted to install Win 8 on the SSD as an UEFI device too.
I installed the SSD on port 1 of the SATA III (AHCI). In every win install attempt I had the HD disconnected. When reconnected, it was on SATA III port 2 (AHCI).
After MANY, MANY attempts, I have Win 8 installed on the SSD and the original Windows 8 remains on the HD. I was unable to to a UEFI install, so I gave up and did an MBR traditional install. When I boot to the SSD, Windows works but I can't see the HD. When I boot to the HD, Windows works but I can't see the SSD.
To make a VERY long saga, less long, I attempted the following.....- created a recovery drive to use to do a clean install on the SSD - didn't work
- "found" original Win 8 Core media and used it to install on the SSD. (It worked but it was a MBR install. I tried this many times using both a DVD and a UEFI formatted USB drive using instructions found on this forum)
Up to this point, any time that Win 8 was installed on the SSD, I could see the HD as a secondary drive. If I booted to the HD, I could see the SSD as a secondary drive.- I then tried to clone the system using Paragaon - it couldn't see the SSD
- I then tried to clone the system using Mini Tool Partition Wizard (as recommended by OCZ) - it proceeded but failed and I got the "Starting Automatic Repair" message that froze the system. After unplugging the SSD, it booted to the HD.
- Based on posts here and other forums, I read that you could use the Windows 8 Pro upgrade to do a clean install. I bought it and upgraded my HD.
- The upgrade would not install on the SSD. It would only upgrade so I re-installed Win 8 Core on the SSD and then upgraded to Pro. (I had to add a PID.txt file with my upgrade licence to the upgrade disk.) After I did this, I could no longer see the secondary drive regardless of whether I booted to the HD or the SSD.- Then I re-installed Win 8 Core on the SSD to see if the Pro upgrade was the issue. - no change I looked in Device Manager and I don't see any errors but I don't see the secondary drive.
I'll attach jpgs of the Device Manager from both the SSD and the HD Win installation"
The SSD appears as unallocated on the HD Disk Manager even though Win 8 is working on that drive! The HD does not appear on the SSD Disk Manager.
I've worked on so many alternatives over the past week that I feel like I'm going around in circles.
I'll settle for a Win 8 MBR installation on the SSD with access to the secondard HD.

Now I want to install windows 8 but only on external hdd. I have tried using official windows 8 iso but it says that my key cannot be used to install retail version of Windows 8.

Jan 9, 2014have Acronis 2013 Plus. What I am trying to do is image the disk of a Windows 7 machine (source) to a machine that had Windows 8 pre-installed (target - Gateway SX2110G).
I connected the Windows 7 drive to the new machine (USB data cable), disabled Secure Boot, and enabled Legacy. Booted to True Image and started the cloning of the drive. Everything seemed to go ok, but as soon as it starts to boot Windows 7, it gives a 7D BSOD. (the same BSOD it gives when I simply plug the source hard drive into the target and try to boot from it).
The source HDD (win 7) boots fine in its original machine.
*I tried the startup repair that's included with the image.. does it matter if I use the one from a disc instead?
Setup Installation :: Installing UEFI / Error 0x80004005 With Win8 - Cannot Create Partitions
Sep 15, 2014I am having problems installing UEFI & a Error 0x80004005 with Windows 8.1 OEM saying it can't create partitions for UEFI then creating 2 partitions for MBR installation instead. This using a 400 TB, hard drive, setup with a GPT system & nothing else & ready for Windows 8.1 to create the partitions.
The first time it happened I used MiniTool Partition Wizard Professional, to delete the partitions created by Windows 8.1 & convert the MBR to GPT, then used Wipe Disk function to erase all data and set all the bits to a 1.
The only thing that I can think is upsetting the installation is that I have left the other drives in the system including 1x3 TB drive, 1x2 TB drive and a second 4 TB drive.
The 2 TB drive has "Win 7 Ultimate" installed using MBR, the 3 TB drive is empty but ready to install Windows 8.1 setup with GPT, and the other 4 TB drive has a UEFI Windows 8.1 installed but broken.
I have also tried to install UEFI Win 8.1 on the 3 TB drive but it failed with the same error code as above.
This UEFI takes a lot to get ones head around dose't it, and me being much older than I once was makes it even harder. I have tried this installation at least 3 to 4 times now and doing these "Wipe Disk Functions" every time has so far lost me 3 whole days just in wasted time.

Feb 2, 2014I've had Win 7 Pro on my laptop for over a year. I installed a 2nd hard drive to it recently and today I installed Windows 8 Pro on the 2nd hard drive. It's been a roller coaster of good & bad luck.
The first install went fine, until I tried to install the Windows 8.1 upgrade from the Windows store, then things went bad and I had to go into Windows 7 and eventually delete the Windows 8 volume and change it from MBR to GPT because of UEFI (no secure boot enabled). What a stretch of error messages telling me I can't install Windows 8 on the blank hard drive because it was or wasn't MBR or GPT, or the automagically made partitions weren't in the right order.
After spending over 7 hours twice in a row installing Windows 8, I finally find out that there's no boot option for Windows 7 anymore.
The only clue I have is to use a Windows 7 repair disk and use diskpart.exe and make the Win 7 drive "active" but that's a little foreign to me at this point.
I'm looking in Computer Management / Disk Management from within Windows 8.
Disk 0: SYSTEM D: 438 MB NTFS (lengthened from 199 MB with EaseUS because Acronis 2014 thought it too small while crashing), Healthy (Active, Primary Partition); Win 7 E: 930.98 GB NTFS Healthy (Primary Partition); HP_TOOLS F: 102 MB FAT 32 Healthy (Primary Partition)
Disk 1: 300 MB Healthy (Recovery Partition) {no letter}; 100 MB Healthy (EFI System Partition) {no letter}; C: 931.00 GB NTFS Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)
And several other external disks which don't deserve mention today.

Aug 21, 2013First, some context: I have a Dell Inspiron 15R SE that came with Windows 8.
I've managed to get a working dual-boot system with Ubuntu 12.10. I can't remember exactly how I done that, but I remember that I had to disable secure boot. I think that the boot configuration those days was:
Secure boot: DisabledLoad legacy option rom: EnabledBoot list option: Legacy
This "configuration" worked perfectly for 6-7 months.
Then, one day (last week, can't remember the exact day), when I was using Windows 8 the computer crashed. I hard-rebooted and got this screen:
After executed boot-repair from a Ubuntu LiveCD dozens of times I've decided to eliminate Ubuntu temporarily and focus to get a system with Windows 8 working nice.
Then I used my recovery DVDs to recover the system. Yup, Windows has booted. But when I restarted first time I got the same error. Then I, digging a solution, pressed F12 after a reboot and got here:
The highlighted option allows me to boot into Windows 8. So I went to boot options (F2) and changed the following configuration:
Load legacy option rom: DisabledBoot list option: UEFI
Now I can boot directly to Windows without need to press F12.
But my objective isn't complete. I want to erase all Ubuntu entries from the seconds image and restore the legacy boot from the first imagem (because they worked before).
I did two things:
I erased all partitions related to Ubuntu (root partition and home partition).I created a Windows recovery disk (not a system recovery disk).
I used the recovery disk to run the automatic recovery procedure (I forgot the exactly name). I've runned it at least 10 times with no success. Then I went to command prompt to try the famous triad: bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot and bootrec /rebuildbcd. Still, no solution.

Mar 24, 2014After creating a UEFI bootable USB thumb drive with Rufus (using Windows 8.1 Enterprise ISO x64), for a Dell Optiplex 3010 (configured as UEFI only, no CSM, latest firmware version, Windows 8 installed), I didn't see a USB boot option, so I tried to add one manually. Unfortunately I erased the existing boot option (boot manager) by mistake. Although there were two boot options for PXE booting, the machine will not start anymore, even when there is an active WDS server on the network.
I also see Led's 2 and 3 lighting up, meaning according to the manual 'hardware ok but bios possibly damaged/corrupt'.
I understand I cannot start the machine from a bios boot disk because of GPT partitioning, and the UEFI USB boot disk I made might be corrupt (as it didn't show up as a boot option), however I don't understand why it won't boot from the PXE network card, as these boot options are still there.

I migrated Window 8 to an SSD, removed that from the system, installed new SSD and put Windows 7 on it. Both worked fine. I wound up with 2 SSD's. capable of running on the EFI BIOS machine with Secure Boot turned off. I later bought a new laptop with Windows 8. I found the Win 8 with Classic Shell to be very acceptable.
What I would like to do now ,if possible, is to mount both SSD's in the HP case and switch to either one of them at boot.

Apr 28, 2014I had windows 7 running on my computer. When windows 8 came out I used a second harddrive as the windows 8 installation drive. Windows 8 automatically setup a dual boot system where every time I started the computer it took me a windows screen where I could select either windows 7 or windows 8. This has been going on since Windows 8 was released.
I decided it was getting old so I decided it was time to remove the old windows 7 harddrive. I tried doing it inside the windows 8 dual boot screen but could not find an option. So I decided to reformat the windows 7 harddrive. I did this in command prompt mode. After doing so when my computer restarted it said it could not find any harddrive to boot. Windows 8 is installed on the other harddrive, the one that was not reformatted. So how do I get it to start using that harddrive as the boot drive? I checked my bios and even physically disconnected the old HD that had windows 7 on it, but none of that seemed to work even though the Windows 8 HD is definitely in the boot order in the bios.

1- BIOS setting "legacy" and U E F I" boot from USB.
2- F 9 to choose boot order.. selected USB device
3- Installation starts for WIN 7
4- Driver is needed to continue, and i have no clue what it is..some one pointed me to . f 6 f l p y-x 64 because its an HP Envy...
5- Driver not found / wrong driver..
6- Shut down restart.......................
My DVD is Windows 7 ultimate X 32, X 64..
No matter what i cant boot form my USB /U E Fl /WIN 7 pen drive.seems like its not recognized or drivers for the USB chip set not installed.. Of course using the O E M DVD of win 7 fails. because of the G P T style.

Dec 3, 2011I cannot boot Windows 8 without the DVD but I'm thinking its not Windows 8 and the bootloader its my motherboard along with the IDE 2nd hard drive (BIOS settings?). I get a message about my secondary maxtor IDE drive upon boot up. It says something like choose the following 1) FD No Emulation system HD00 2) FD No Emulation system HD00 2). It doesn't stay there too long it defaults to 1) and then says press any key to boot to DVD... then it boots up to Windows 8. However, if I do not have the Windows 8 DVD in the IDE DVD drive it will not boot it just flashes the "_" underscore and hangs. If the DVD is in the drive it works.
Gparted partition tools shows the correct boot flag. I'm not sure about the Fdisk status of the partition table maybe that will be next. I'm wondering if I should try the bootrec /fixboot command but concerned about having to start from scratch again.

- Used "Rufus" as per tutorial to make UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive
- used a software to test usb if bootable and it was.
- Set Secure Boot off
- Adjusted BIOS to boot usb (kingston) as primary.
I try restarting and nothing happens.

Sep 15, 2014I'm trying to dual boot Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and Windows 8 Pro. I want to have each OS installed on separate Hard drives. I want the default OS to be Windows 7 (loads automatically) or goes to the boot manager screen and choose either Win 7 and Win 8.
I've been running Windows 7 on an SSD hard drive with a UEFI Boot. I'm looking to install Windows 8 on a WD Caviar Black 1 TB drive.
Steps taken:
-Burnt Windows 8 to DVD to boot and install from.
-Re-ordered boot order to boot from DVD
-Windows 8 install starts
-Windows 8 drive screen - format the WD Caviar Black 1 TB to install Windows 8 on.
-ERROR Message appears - Can't find media location (I didn't write it down but will on next install I will update). Something like 0x00007B. The solution I found was to disconnect my Windows 7 drive (and all other hard drives).
(Issue: won't that affect the set up of the dual boot?)
-Disconnected Windows 7 drive and was able to install Windows 8.
-After successful install of Windows 8 I re-started my system expecting to see the dual boot menu options. However, Windows 8 loaded directly.
-Changed boot drive order to SSD (with Windows 7) then WD 1TB Drive (with Windows 8). However, Windows 7 then loaded directly.
-I rebooted into Windows 8 and went to the boot order menu in Settings > Control Panel > System > Startup and Restore > (might be a few other tabs). The drop down box shows Windows 8 but no Windows 7.
So, I'm sure I did something wrong on the install. Any thoughts?
If the SSD is a UEFI boot should the WD 1TB (Win 8 install drive) be the same? Is it critical to have the Windows 8 drive connected while installing Windows 8 to the other hard drive? If so, I will have to solve the error message I get after formatting the WD 1TB drive during the Win 8 install. (I know not having the specific error code doesn't work - will update tonight with that info).
Also, I have a 2TB drive that I think has a MBR partition. Would that affect things? Should I even have that? I'll confirm that too. Just hoping to possibly get the ball rolling with answers.

Sep 15, 2014Lenovo g505 History - What I did so far, is further down Computer went badly wrong and would not Boot into Windows (belongs to my mates 11 year old) I decided to a Factory Restore it seemed the best Option as my knowledge stops, til now, at Win 7 I did it, but it doesnt Boot into Windows CURRENT I have the HDD connected to another computer which is running Win 7 I can now see that it did indeed do a Restore to the System Partition Pic Shows Disk in Disk Management

In Disk Management I see 7 Partitions Now I think I understand what the Problem is - ?too many Partitions? But I dont have a clue how to Resolve it correctly My inclination is to Run DiskCheck from Win7 on the HDD but I am not sure if that will work on Windows 8? same with FixBoot if it is Possible? The LENOVO H Drive has 3 Folders with Data in it Lenovo & Drivers & Applications

but then said Success

Chose Reboot
eventualy Booted to a Windows Pale Blue screen with the Cursor half hour later, the Box came up to start the Restore again I did it, same as above time and Result so this time I chose Shut Down Started - Logo for long time then loading Files and back at the Box to Start Restore again
I have since tried booting with Default Options UEFI and Legacy in the BIOS In the middle of all this, as it is about 4 hours to do the restore.

Sep 19, 2013I've made a UEFI Win8PE by WADK , then burn it to a CD. I boot normal and I can see X:WindowsSystem32.
I use EasyBCD to [Add New Entry] to append new boot item to existing Windows 8. The boot menu becomes like this :
Windows 8
Win8PE
But the Win8PE fail to boot with error message like insert Windows disc again ...... in the primary black and white screen.
Should I not to use EasyBCD to [Add New Entry] ? As I do the same thing in BIOs + MBR harddisk that booted perfect. In UEFI + GPT partition , do I better not to use EasyBCD , instead to use BCDEDIT , if so , what's the command line to do this with bcdedit ?

Jan 2, 2014I had my system set up for Dual boot (on separate hard drives) for both Win 8.1 and Win 7. Win 8.1 developed a problem and unfortunately the only back up I had (my fault) was for Win 8 before I installed Win 7 and the dual boot.
I reinstalled from the backup and then updated Win 8 to 8.1. Both the Win 8.1 64 bit and the Win 7 64 bit work OK but the dual boot is now missing in Win 8.1.
Is there any way of repairing/creating the dual boot, either in Win 7 or Win 8, without using BCD Edit?

Feb 20, 2014I have Windows 8 x64 preinstalled on my Toshiba Laptop. I created a startup disk (DVD) but i cannot boot from the DVD/CD Drive. I set my BIOS to boot from my DVD Drive but i think the problem may be my autoplay settings from DVD Drive. I just don't know how to set them up. the Disk is fine it is not scratched or anything. I don't know how to set up my media devices especially optical so that i can boot from the DVD Drive!
