Network / Sharing :: Unzipped Files Blocked From Preview In File Explorer?
Feb 6, 2014
I often unzip compressed folders sent to me by email containing several pdf files. When opened in file explorer the preview pane is blocked.
I have to right click and select properties, then click unblock button individually on each file if I want to preview them in the preview pane.
Any way I can set an option either to not automatically block these files when transferred from compressed email attachment to the folder?
Or any way I can use the parent directory and unblock all the files in all the subfolders at once?

In File Explorer the preview window box is checked and thumbnails box is checked, but I can only preview image files. Word or Pdf files do not show up. I did a factory setting reinstall of Windows 8.1. My word documents showed up in the preview window prior to the reinstall, but not my pdf files. I use this feature frequently.

Ive been using a method to access my Skydrive files in explorer without the need for the Skydrive app. The process is explained here: How To Map SkyDrive Folder As Network Drive In Windows 8 And RT .
It works great on 1 pc I use but on another it doesn't. The problem is it is only showing the Public folder and nothing else. I cant work out why this is the case.
It accepts my credentials fine and connects the drive it just doesn't show the files there. It also doesn't allow me to upload anything else to the drive.

I use SkyDrive quite every time. For each file, I copy to my Windows explorer folder of SkyDrive, I have to individually right click each file and select Make Available online only. I want the explorer to do this for each and every file I copy to the folder so that I don't need to waste time to do it all by myself.

Ok, so my computer was having connection problems, and basicly, when I did the scan, this came up.
"Your system can not send or receive fragmented traffic over IPv6. The path between your network and our system supports an MTU of at least 1280 bytes. The path between our system and your network has an MTU of 1276 bytes. The bottleneck is at IP address 2001:470:0:136::2. The path between our system and your network does not appear to handle fragmented IPv6 traffic properly."

so I bought my laptop two months ago (a Vaio SVE1112M1EW) and was able to connect to Wifi in my house easily. But then when I moved to other places, I wasn't able to connect to any Wifi spot!
When I come back home I can connect again. So I think the Wifi should be working but the settings are not right.

I am setting up an Acer Iconia that has Windows 8 installed and after setting up the server connection I can't access Windows Store. The message i get is: "Your network proxy doesn't work with Windows Store." I have changed firewall settings to allow the tablet through the firewall but still get that message. What is the ip address for Windows Store so I can allow "no user authentication" for it?

I was running Windows 8 x64 without any issues. Recently I updated to 8.1 and am having a weird issue.
The internet works fine for general browsing and even for streaming like netflix or pandora/spotify. However, when I am using a program other than a web browser that pulls information in from a server based on data that I enter, it seems like it isn't going through. It is like the program doesn't even see the internet.
I am a pilot and have a program that allows me to input data and retrieve charts and other pertinent information for my proposed route. When I enter in the data and press the button to retrieve the charts, etc, I get a message saying error downloading files. At first I thought it was this program or a problem with their server. However, over the past days every program that I use that pulls information from the internet is doing the same thing more or less. I have weather planning programs that can't get map or weather data; I have flight and rout planning programs that can't even retrieve the listing of airports, and I have performance calculators that will not receive any information. These are just some of the programs that I use. They are all made by different developers and connect to different servers. I can't even get a basic application to receive NOAA weather data.
I tried adding a firewall rule for the applications and when that didn't work, I disabled the firewall all together through the advanced settings. I also disabled windows defender. There is no other AV program running on my machine at the moment and it still will not connect. Then again, oddly enough, I can use the internet fine from a browser. There have been no changes other than 8.1 being loaded.

Lenovo P585. The wifi does not work all that well...... It either switches between 2-4 bars infrequently or it takes 10-20 seconds for a page to start loading. My drivers are up to date.
Recently it has gotten worse and sometimes it says I have no connection all together. My tablet and other computers connect fine enough and don't have the same 10-20 delay for a page to load.
Also a torrent site I go to frequently has not been loadable for over a month. The torrents also don't seed. The site will only load on my Windows Phone 8 with wifi on and 4g off. This lead me to believe that my ISP is not blocking the site.
I get this on any PCs in the house: Error code: ERR_NETWORK_ACCESS_DENIED
Not sure why this happens, every other page loads fine.

I went from XP to Windows 8 Pro. With XP, a pictures folder allowed the icons to represent a small version of the picture; the filmstrip option was a nice bonus.
With Windows 8, the icon, no matter what size, has a generic look to it--same for all the pictures. I enable Preview Pane, and the same thing happens. No preview of the picture on the preview pane, just a much larger generic icon.
I see screen views on the web of it actually working, but I can't get it to.

When I know that I won't be using my PC any time soon I turn it off. However, when I got to turn it back on I notice that I don't have an internet connection.
Yes I did: Check my other (wired) PCs and they were fineCheck that my ethernet cable is plugged in - I also unplugged and plugged it back in (no difference)Log in and try to load up Google in case the connection was there, but the indicator was lagging or whatever (no difference)Try to do a ipconfig /renew (no difference)
In the end, what worked was for me to restart my computer and the connection would magically be there.
But the thing is, this has been happening to me every single morning for the past two weeks. Sure I could leave my PC on, but I did not always have this issue and leaving it on won't really fix it ...
I am using Windows 8.1 Pro Preview
Internets not found when PC turned on. Reboot PC fixes problem.

Annoying error of windows explorer. Windows explorer is getting crashed while opening any folders accidentally, especially folders with large number of files and images. first it appears as windows explorer is unable to load files thumbnails (any kind of files) and appears as white or blank icons regardless the type of file. then when opening my computer in another window , it couldn't load even contents of drivers and hangs as "searching for items".
All this happens suddenly after weeks of normal windows usage. I resolve it by backing up system using Acronis image. but the problem persists. I tried virus scan with no success using AVG. I made thorough scan for C with no result too.
Note that this problem I found with Windows 7 and it forced me to upgrade to Windows 8 then I'm experiencing the same problem now. I don't Understand why.
Note: I think there's no hardware (HDD) error cause I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 alongside Windows and it's browsing files perfectly.

In Win 8 Windows Explorer, the preview pane seems to be able to display previews of all file types I really use except the type I use most-- eml email files. Is it possible to get the preview pane to show a preview of an eml file?
I have noticed that if I simply manually edit an eml file's extension from eml to mht-- it will be displayed in the preview pane.
I have hundreds if not thousands of eml files saved to disk. I really don't want to change all of them to mht because that eliminates email functionality of the file. Meaning, I would not be able to double-click the file, open it and respond to or forward it as an email message.

I am in the midst of the final steps in setting my my new Win 8 system.
I have a Win XP and Win 8 computer on my home network. I believe that I have set up file and printer sharing correctly. I can access the files and printer on the XP system from the Win 8 system. However, when I attempt to access the Win 8 files from the Win XP system, I get a long delay (about a minute or two) and then it asks me for the User Name & Password. I enter them and then and it works fine.
If I try to print on the printer attached to the Win 8 system from the XP system, I get a printer error unless I have already signed in with the ID & PW when accessing files. It never asks me for an ID & PW before attempting to print.
On the Win 8 system, I have selected "Turn off password protected sharing" in the "Network and Sharing Center/Advanced Sharing Settings".
The Win XP system has previously been correctly sharing files and printers with another XP system for some time and I haven't changed any settings on the XP computer.
Both the XP and Win 8 systems are assigned the same Workgroup name.

I would like to make a folder share from a tablet with windows 8 with password protected to a laptop of windows 7 and another of vista. I have followed the tutorial of File Sharing - "Share with" & "Stop Sharing" in Windows 8. My PCs have been set in the same workgroup and same user account, network discovery and file and printer sharing turned on. At the first time, it is OK for windows 7. However after some changes of account (delete and create them on both windows 8 and windows 7), it doesn't work anymore with the error from windows 7 "Login failure: user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer" whenever password protected turned on in windows 8 and only OK when password turned off.

I upgraded to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 and I can no longer see the files inside the folders on my networked drive. Before I upgraded I could see them, after the upgrade - not so much. The folders are fine, I can see them, just no files visible. There's no network issues as the files are visible from my Win7 machines and my wife's Windows 8 machine. All the standard default sharing and viewing settings are correct. Even if I put the direct path in File Explorer is tells me there's nothing there. I'm absolutely baffled. I have never seen this particular type of sharing issue before. I'm a pretty savvy Network Admin so the basic troubleshooting (and standard sharing settings) has been covered.

I recently did a clean install of Windows 8.1 x64. I have a Synology DS213+ NAS server in my LAN. Before doing the clean install (had Windows 8 installed before), all hardware being identical, I could launch setup programs from the NAS volume without any problem.
Now, after the clean install, I get an "Incorrect parameter" error when trying to run setup.exe files from the NAS. Some other exe files, like small programs that only consist of one exe file, can be run without any problem.
The following things have been ruled out so far:
- When first copying the installation files from the NAS to a local hard drive, they can be run without any problem, so it's not the installation files being corrupt. Also tried with many different installation packages.
- I can directly launch the same installation programs from other computers in the same LAN, without the need of first copying to their local hard drive.
- If I am in front of the computer causing trouble and run the same installation package from another computer in the LAN (having copied the files there in the first place) I can also execute the setup without that error.
- The NAS firmware or configuration has not been changed.
- The hardware of my main computer causing trouble in question has not changed.
- It does not make a difference whether the setup.exe on the NAS is accessed through the network drive letter of the location or whether I browse to the location via the network address, e.g. //MYNAS/Software/setup.exe
==> Hence it must the software (Win 8.1) and its configuration. And it has also to do with the interplay of the computer with that particular network share.

I was trying to use Windows Explorer to wirelessly browse my Android folders with the ES File Explorer app. The app issued me the local ftp IP and port to connect. I also setup a username and password for the connection.
When I entered those credentials on Vista, Win Explorer displayed folders as usual and allowed the usual drag and drop and cut/paste features. However, with Win 8.1 the interface looks like an HTML web page where all my Android folders display as links, and files and folders can only be downloaded. Is there some configuration setting I'm missing to make it look the old way?

The only thing that I've been able to find online are uncheck "Always show icons, never thumbnails" and using the Adobe Reader preview handler x64 fixer tool. Neither of these solutions have worked. What else can I try?

On my home network there are Windows 8-A, Windows 8-B and W7 machines. There is no problem networking among these machines except from Windows 8-A to W7. The shared folders on the W7 are displayed on Windows 8-A but if I attempt to click-open any one of them no ID/PW is asked for and the following message is displayed:
"You do not have permission to access . . . . . Contact your network administrator . . . "
Windows 8-A <--> Windows 8-B OK
Windows 8-B <--> W7 OK
Windows 8-A <-- W7 OK
Windows 8-A --> W7 NG
Windows 8-B and W7 are logged in by the same ID and password, but Windows 8-A is logged in by a different ID and PW. I can open any folder of the W7 from Windows 8-A *if* Windows 8-A is logged in by the same ID and PW as for W7/Windows 8-B.

I'm thinking of switching to Windows 8 from OS X on my 2009 MacBook Pro. Its the small things in OS X that brought me to Mac in the first place but now it is getting old. Windows 8 looks fresh so I'm thinking of switching to it. One of these small things thats really useful in OS X is quicklook.
When you are in Finder (like Windows Explorer) if you press the space bar any file that you have highlighted gets previewed. This is much quicker than opening whatever app handles that file and it also gives you some basic useful information about the file like size, type, etc.
If I would just like to see what an mp3 is quickly but dont want to import it into iTunes I can just press the space bar and be done with it in seconds instead of opening iTunes, importing it, creating clutter (if I dont want the file in iTunes at all). Likewise instead of opening a photo app I can just quickly look and browse through pictures.
Does Windows 8 have a similar feature that works fast and is useful?
