Jul 28, 2014
I was moving my files from my old dual boot machine to a new one, so I plugged my old hard drive into my external drive and pulled the windows files from it using Windows 8.1. Big mistake. [URL]

I often unzip compressed folders sent to me by email containing several pdf files. When opened in file explorer the preview pane is blocked.
I have to right click and select properties, then click unblock button individually on each file if I want to preview them in the preview pane.
Any way I can set an option either to not automatically block these files when transferred from compressed email attachment to the folder?
Or any way I can use the parent directory and unblock all the files in all the subfolders at once?

This is an odd little problem, but I can't access DeviantArt on my HP Laptop.
A little history: I bought the laptop new. It had Windows 8 64 bit installed, and I immediately upgraded to 8.1, and at that time, I remember browsing the site looking for desktop wallpaper. Since then I upgraded with the Spring update, and any other update Windows gives me, so the laptop is up to date. I use FireFox (up to date) as a browser, and when I recently tried to access the site, I got a 'Connection has timed out' screen. I opened IE, and got a 'The operation timed out' screen.
Things I have tried:
ISP / Router -
The laptop I'm having the trouble with is wireless. Using an older desktop (XP 32 bit SP3 as up to date as it will ever get) that is hardwired into the router, I have no problems accessing the site. Using my cell phone on the same WiFi (Android OS with Chrome browser), I'm also able to access it.
Using an online proxy/anonymizer, I was able to get the site site to on the laptop.
HOSTS file -
Since the 'Connection has timed out' is the same one I get from an ad page the HOSTS file has blocked, I removed it and replaced it with a blank one. No effect on either browser. I should also note that this is the exact same HOSTS file and FireFox version I'm using on the XP machine without issue.
Anti-Virus -
I use Avast's free version, also up to date. I turned it off, again with no effect, and, again, it's the same that's running on the XP.
DNS -
I used the 'ipconfig /flushdns' to no effect. I even tried to use DeviantArt's IP address (199.15.160.100), again, nothing.
I ran a scan with my AV, MalwareBytes, and Kaspersky's TDSSKiller with no results on any of them. All other websites that I normally go to are working fine.

I am setting up an Acer Iconia that has Windows 8 installed and after setting up the server connection I can't access Windows Store. The message i get is: "Your network proxy doesn't work with Windows Store." I have changed firewall settings to allow the tablet through the firewall but still get that message. What is the ip address for Windows Store so I can allow "no user authentication" for it?

Ok, so my computer was having connection problems, and basicly, when I did the scan, this came up.
"Your system can not send or receive fragmented traffic over IPv6. The path between your network and our system supports an MTU of at least 1280 bytes. The path between our system and your network has an MTU of 1276 bytes. The bottleneck is at IP address 2001:470:0:136::2. The path between our system and your network does not appear to handle fragmented IPv6 traffic properly."

so I bought my laptop two months ago (a Vaio SVE1112M1EW) and was able to connect to Wifi in my house easily. But then when I moved to other places, I wasn't able to connect to any Wifi spot!
When I come back home I can connect again. So I think the Wifi should be working but the settings are not right.

So I just installed Kaspersky and it asked me to block some packet ports. I clicked "Yes to All" and now I can't play any online games. I've tried searching the net on how to fix the packet rules to no avail. I just updated Windows 8.1 after my laptop reset itself due to some problems so I don't feel like refreshing it again due to how long it takes.

I was running Windows 8 x64 without any issues. Recently I updated to 8.1 and am having a weird issue.
The internet works fine for general browsing and even for streaming like netflix or pandora/spotify. However, when I am using a program other than a web browser that pulls information in from a server based on data that I enter, it seems like it isn't going through. It is like the program doesn't even see the internet.
I am a pilot and have a program that allows me to input data and retrieve charts and other pertinent information for my proposed route. When I enter in the data and press the button to retrieve the charts, etc, I get a message saying error downloading files. At first I thought it was this program or a problem with their server. However, over the past days every program that I use that pulls information from the internet is doing the same thing more or less. I have weather planning programs that can't get map or weather data; I have flight and rout planning programs that can't even retrieve the listing of airports, and I have performance calculators that will not receive any information. These are just some of the programs that I use. They are all made by different developers and connect to different servers. I can't even get a basic application to receive NOAA weather data.
I tried adding a firewall rule for the applications and when that didn't work, I disabled the firewall all together through the advanced settings. I also disabled windows defender. There is no other AV program running on my machine at the moment and it still will not connect. Then again, oddly enough, I can use the internet fine from a browser. There have been no changes other than 8.1 being loaded.

I'm trying to create a virtual machine with Ubuntu in it.
I followed the instructions in this video step by step......and I have VM installed and running.
The problem comes when I try and go to the next step.
When I double click on the Ubuntu Icon in VM to start the Ubuntu install process, it should ask where the Ubuntu ISO file is, instead I get this message...
Here's my directory structure...
Virtual Box is installed in the 001 Virtual Box folder and the Ubuntu.vdi file is where you see it.
I've removed everything and repeated the process multiple times, but I always get the same result.

Lenovo P585. The wifi does not work all that well...... It either switches between 2-4 bars infrequently or it takes 10-20 seconds for a page to start loading. My drivers are up to date.
Recently it has gotten worse and sometimes it says I have no connection all together. My tablet and other computers connect fine enough and don't have the same 10-20 delay for a page to load.
Also a torrent site I go to frequently has not been loadable for over a month. The torrents also don't seed. The site will only load on my Windows Phone 8 with wifi on and 4g off. This lead me to believe that my ISP is not blocking the site.
I get this on any PCs in the house: Error code: ERR_NETWORK_ACCESS_DENIED
Not sure why this happens, every other page loads fine.

I just recently installed Ubuntu 13.04 in my new msi laptop. My goal is to hide Windows 8 partition in ubuntu and vice versa.
In ubuntu, I disabled auto mount so it is working as desired.
In windows 8 disk manager, I cannot seem to find a way to hide the ubuntu partitions.
My goal is to keep windows and ubuntu partions (in windows drives) to see each other to protect the parition from accidental damage.
Is there a way to this in windows 8 home edition?

I have just had limited success installing Ubuntu 12.10 onto an external diskon my new Samsung (series 3) Windows 8 laptop.
The secure boot and fast start up have been disabled.
The situation now is that Windows or Ubuntu will not boot up after pressing the power button, when doing this I get a dark screen with the following message:
error: no such device: 6dada016-95df-4ef5-a343-4a77e8afd396
grub rescue >_
I can now only boot up either program by hitting the F10 key directly afterpressing the power button, I then have to select one of the options in the boot options before themachine will boot (both systems boot up as normal when following this option).
if the external drive is not plugged into the USB port I want mylaptop to boot directly into Windows 8. Can this be achieved?. I would like to start Ubuntu through the settings, change PC settings option.

I've had this Windows 8 computer for a while and I've decided that I want to dual-OS Ubuntu 13.10, but how to partition disks or backup system images or anything like that. I'm not even sure how to check what kind of ASUS my laptop is, but I'm fairly certain it is compatible with Ubuntu. If I can, I'd like to avoid using external hard-drives and CD's because I don't have easy access to either.

I've recently unsuccessfully attempted to run ubuntu alongside windows 8. Ubuntu didn't seem to be working, so I decided to just go back to windows 8. However, when I did so my computer decided to get stuck on the loading screen for windows. I left that there for about 2 hours, then decided to go through and see if I could change anything in bios in order to fix it. Nothing worked. I pressed f8 when I was booting up, and got to the recovery option.
When I tried to recover, it told me that my hard drive was locked, and I should unlock it before attempting to recover any files. So while trying to install ubuntu I somehow managed to lock my hard drive. I attempt to access my c: drive through command prompt, and it tells me that the C: drive does exist, but does not contain any files. Is there anyway to grant myself access to the hard drive, or am I going to have to wipe it?

Since I installed Ubuntu onto my computer, I couldn't boot the Windows 8. I tried installation DVD to repair, but it didn't work. I tried these solutions; solution1, solution2, none of them worked either. I tried refreshing, it stopped at 37%.
When I use diskpart to list partitions from command prompt via the installation DVD, I chose the right partition, but I couldn't activate it.

I'm wanting to upgrade my laptop to Windows 8. I currently have Ubuntu 12.10 installed alongside Windows 7. I've had a lot of trouble getting ubuntu installed and working (AMD graphics ) so I'd like to just leave that as is.
Is it possible to just install windows 8 over W7 in the same partition? How do I go about doing that? Is it as straight forward as just putting the disk in or is the whole secure boot thing going to cause issues? I want to do a clean install rather than using the upgrade assistant to install Windows 8 over W7.
