Browsers/Mail :: Hotfix For Outlook 2010 When Installing SP2?

Dec 13, 2013

this is the hotfix for Office 2010 when you install sp2 and see in event viewer over and over Outlook 2010 calendar Folder is empty

It is a zip file which you will have to unzip

It puts it into C:/

Find the file that says (if it is the 32 bit one) Outlook 2010-Kb2849973-fullfile-x86-gill.exe

You need to run it as an administrator or it will come up and fail

I have installed it and so far I am not getting the hundreds of error msgs

this is where you get it, you will pick either the 32bit or 64bit edition depending on which one you installed.

Browsers/Mail :: Specific Website Blocked On Windows 8.1

May 29, 2014

This is an odd little problem, but I can't access DeviantArt on my HP Laptop.

A little history: I bought the laptop new. It had Windows 8 64 bit installed, and I immediately upgraded to 8.1, and at that time, I remember browsing the site looking for desktop wallpaper. Since then I upgraded with the Spring update, and any other update Windows gives me, so the laptop is up to date. I use FireFox (up to date) as a browser, and when I recently tried to access the site, I got a 'Connection has timed out' screen. I opened IE, and got a 'The operation timed out' screen.

Things I have tried:

ISP / Router -
The laptop I'm having the trouble with is wireless. Using an older desktop (XP 32 bit SP3 as up to date as it will ever get) that is hardwired into the router, I have no problems accessing the site. Using my cell phone on the same WiFi (Android OS with Chrome browser), I'm also able to access it.
Using an online proxy/anonymizer, I was able to get the site site to on the laptop.

HOSTS file -
Since the 'Connection has timed out' is the same one I get from an ad page the HOSTS file has blocked, I removed it and replaced it with a blank one. No effect on either browser. I should also note that this is the exact same HOSTS file and FireFox version I'm using on the XP machine without issue.

Anti-Virus -
I use Avast's free version, also up to date. I turned it off, again with no effect, and, again, it's the same that's running on the XP.

DNS -
I used the 'ipconfig /flushdns' to no effect. I even tried to use DeviantArt's IP address (199.15.160.100), again, nothing.

I ran a scan with my AV, MalwareBytes, and Kaspersky's TDSSKiller with no results on any of them. All other websites that I normally go to are working fine.

Network / Sharing :: After Updating To 8.1 - Inbound / Outbound Traffic Blocked

Jan 19, 2014

I was running Windows 8 x64 without any issues. Recently I updated to 8.1 and am having a weird issue.

The internet works fine for general browsing and even for streaming like netflix or pandora/spotify. However, when I am using a program other than a web browser that pulls information in from a server based on data that I enter, it seems like it isn't going through. It is like the program doesn't even see the internet.

I am a pilot and have a program that allows me to input data and retrieve charts and other pertinent information for my proposed route. When I enter in the data and press the button to retrieve the charts, etc, I get a message saying error downloading files. At first I thought it was this program or a problem with their server. However, over the past days every program that I use that pulls information from the internet is doing the same thing more or less. I have weather planning programs that can't get map or weather data; I have flight and rout planning programs that can't even retrieve the listing of airports, and I have performance calculators that will not receive any information. These are just some of the programs that I use. They are all made by different developers and connect to different servers. I can't even get a basic application to receive NOAA weather data.

I tried adding a firewall rule for the applications and when that didn't work, I disabled the firewall all together through the advanced settings. I also disabled windows defender. There is no other AV program running on my machine at the moment and it still will not connect. Then again, oddly enough, I can use the internet fine from a browser. There have been no changes other than 8.1 being loaded.

Network / Sharing :: Unzipped Files Blocked From Preview In File Explorer?

I often unzip compressed folders sent to me by email containing several pdf files. When opened in file explorer the preview pane is blocked.

I have to right click and select properties, then click unblock button individually on each file if I want to preview them in the preview pane.

Any way I can set an option either to not automatically block these files when transferred from compressed email attachment to the folder?

Or any way I can use the parent directory and unblock all the files in all the subfolders at once?

Network / Sharing :: Slow WiFi On Lenovo P585 - Blocked Torrent Site

Apr 28, 2014

Lenovo P585. The wifi does not work all that well...... It either switches between 2-4 bars infrequently or it takes 10-20 seconds for a page to start loading. My drivers are up to date.

Recently it has gotten worse and sometimes it says I have no connection all together. My tablet and other computers connect fine enough and don't have the same 10-20 delay for a page to load.

Also a torrent site I go to frequently has not been loadable for over a month. The torrents also don't seed. The site will only load on my Windows Phone 8 with wifi on and 4g off. This lead me to believe that my ISP is not blocking the site.

I get this on any PCs in the house: Error code: ERR_NETWORK_ACCESS_DENIED

Not sure why this happens, every other page loads fine.

With that, if I choose to go with the "local account" can I easily switch back to the Microsoft one?

Setup Installation :: How To Install Windows 7 Along Side Factory Installed Windows 8

Jul 2, 2013

In a few days I will receive a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon with Windows 8 installed. And separately I will receive an OEM Win7. Win7 is certainly what I intend to use, and I had originally thought I would wipe out Windows 8 and install Win7. But now I am wondering if I can somehow preserve Windows 8 for occasional use. (I would have ordered the machine with Win7 but this is a refurbished machine.)

I would rather not have to understand UEFI. (I'm sure it would be interesting, I just have other things to do with my time.) And, although I do it sometimes, and will if I have to, I do not like diddling with BIOS settings.

I know that factory installed operating systems generally can't be moved to other machines. And I fear that the factory installed Windows 8 that I will receive may not even tolerate being installed, e.g., in a smaller partition or under something like VMware (another complication I'd like to avoid).

Debugging :: Post-BSOD Factory Reset Downgrade From Windows 8 To Windows 7

Aug 3, 2014

I have a Samsung Series 5, 530U (the remaining digits I don't recall right now).

I purchased it from a digital superstore, like a market, rather than a regular PC store.

The device is set for Windows 7, although on purchase, I asked for Windows 8 to be installed.

Now, a BSOD has stopped me gaining access through refreshing, restarting, safe mode or any of the options available through the troubleshooting menu.

I retrieved my data using a SATA, and now wish to wipe the system of Windows 8, and avoid all the hassle it has brought me, returning to it's factory settings of W7.

I do not have a disk, or anything to do so. When I go through the menu on start-up, I click 'restore system' but I am then prompted for 'recovery mdeia or installation disk'.

Is it possible to just reset the whole PC and start from the day it left the factory?

If I need a disk to reset the original settings, where can I get it from and would simply loading it when prompted fix my problem?

All I want is to be able to use my own PC. I want Windows 8 cleared off and a reliable, original settings PC.
