Maintenance :: Windows 8 - Temporary Freezes And Occasional (Not Responding) Messages
Mar 3, 2013
Temporary freezes and occasional "not responding" messages are not often seen in Windows 8, but occur much more frequently than they do in W7. Same hardware, same software. Only the drives and a few drivers differ.
These hesitations arise in various programs or while manipulating UI options, and have since the earliest Windows 8 betas, though they have become less frequent with each release. No forum messages that I have come across relate specifically to this random issue.
Additionally, Windows 8 is a multitasking slug as contrasted to W7 when, for example, a large file is downloading in the background. Open another program in W7 and it pops up almost immediately; open in Windows 8 and it takes 15-30'. Priority has been assigned to both "programs" and "background services." Made no difference.
2600 Intel CPU, ASUS P8P67le MB, NVidia 210 GPU, at least 28G free space on each drive.
How to overcome it?

I saw the other thread here about "Windows 8 Pro Randomly Freezing," but I think I'm seeing something slightly different. In my case, I'm getting random, repeated instances of various desktop applications temporarily "locking up" and displaying a "Not Responding" message in the title bar of the effected app.
I see this most commonly in Firefox (32-bit version, v17.0 release). These lock-ups last roughly a minute. It seems to minimize the Firefox window (yes, even when not responding, window controls are operative) and then restore it. It will still display the "Not Responding" message, but this seems to clear within 10 or 15 seconds. Not sure this is a fix, and it could be coincidental.
While I initially thought my problem was Firefox, I'm seeing it in other apps, including Evernote and Windows Explorer. I think on a couple of occasions I actually saw this "Not Responding" message appear in dialog boxes.

I'm using Windows Defender, and I believe it's causing freezes on my system. What's happening is that I'll notice my system freezing, and I see a little black clock on the notifications flag which says "scheduled scan."
If I do almost anything with the computer, it will freeze. If I do a Control-alt-delete, it eventually (after 3-5 minutes) gets to the task manager. Sometimes the black clock disappears, sometimes it's still there, and the system then usually runs normally.
It is a pain, however. Is there a way to keep these scans from running except when I manually ask for one?
Also, is the antimalware service executable supposed to be running in the background all the time?

I'll start with my system specs:
Motherboard: Gigabyte P67A-D3-B3 (don't really know the rev on this one)
GPU: ATI Radeon 6770 HD 1 GB, original clocking on 850 mhz
Processor: Intel Core i5 2500 3,30 Ghz (No OC on this one)
RAM: Team Elite 8GB (2x4096MB) CL11 1600 Mhz
HDD: 500 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM SATA 6Gbit/s
Sometimes, not very often my windows 8 stutters and making every program that im running on the computer lag, it is 4 significant stutters that's driving me crazy, i just made a complete reformatting and a clean install of the operative system and it still occurs from time to time.
The operative system is "Windows 8 Pro x64" without Media Center.

System = Win 8 Pro-64, 4 X 60 GB, RAID 10 (300 GB), AMD Quad, 8 GB RAM.
I upgraded from XP-32 To Win 8 Pro-64. My RAID drive "C:" had ~60 GB on it with XP. After the move to Win 8 Pro, C: had ~70 GB. After running Win 8 for about 1-1/2 months drive C: is suddenly almost full. 4.5 GB free space. Now I'm getting weird errors and an occasional disk full notice. What happened?

I've got Toshiba L50-A-19N half of a year old and it started to load everything really slowly or is not responding for a short period of time (acts like frozen for 2-3 second, something like spike). I've done Chkdsk, Memory Diagnose tool, defragmentation. Scanned PC with McAfee, Windows Defender and Malwarebytes. Also reinstalled Windows but nothing worked. Disk seems to be in good health according to Toshiba Health Center and the CPU is not hot, neither used (7% usage and i still get spikes)...

Twice in last 2 weeks, some of my tiles (Games, Bing News, Store, People, Mail, etc.) have just stopped responding. When clicked, I get a blank screen, then the full Start Screen re-appears.Other tiles such as Chrome, Word and Outlook work OK.When this first happened, I did a system restore, and the problem went away, but this time the restore point seems to have gone too.The 'Change PC Settings' does not work either, as I decided to try a complete refresh, but can't access that.

Recently I've started having this problem where if I right-click anywhere in File Explorer, no matter what folder, my cursor switches to loading, then the folder goes to (Not Responding), and I have to close it out which causes Windows Explorer to disappear for a few seconds.

Any way to force a process to become "Not Responding" for troubleshooting purposes, but I have not been able to find one. I have also been unable to find anyone on the internet who is trying to do the same thing as I am. Basically, does any way I can intentionally stop a process from responding?

Why do so many programs just stop working, stop responding for no apparent reason??? This includes IE9, e-mail service, new printer/scanner installation, etc, etc, etc. Sometimes even writing a letter or "Save as" just stops responding. How can this be??? Windows says "we're looking for a solution", but nothing ever shows up. Is there no diagnostic that can identify the failure? Is it memory, conflict, what can be causing these annoying interruptions??? Mostly rebooting the system will clear things up.
My setup: Windows 8 PRO, CPU Intel i7 3.40 GHz 64 bit, 16 GB RAM, INTEL SSDSC solid state hard drive 223 GB (about one quarter full). I did not have these problems with Windows 7, or the Windows 8 pre releases.

I don't know what happened but today when I tried to enter IE I received this message:
The proxy server isn't responding. Check your proxy settings. Go to Tools > Internet Options > Connections. If you are on a LAN, click "LAN settings". Make sure your firewall settings aren't blocking your web access.
If I go to LAN and remove the block with a check beside the proxy sever IE starts, however, if I log off and try to reenter the proxy server box has a check mark.

I upgraded from Win 7 Home Premium to Win 8 Pro 2 days ago. Everything was fine, till it started freezing for no apparent reason. Yesterday it went for a couple of hours without freezing, but today the maximum time without having to restart it has been around 10 minutes. I'm writing this for the third time, because it froze in like 2 mins after restarting it.
It's getting really annoying, since I don't know what causes it. People said it's Chrome's fault, but my laptop froze a few times without Chrome being on. By freezing I mean the Cursor freezes and then disappears and my screen stays the same no matter what I do. Not even the Caps Lock light functions when I press Caps Lock, everything is dead.
I deleted old software that I wasn't using anyway, I updated my Nvidia Geforce 9400M G driver, I uninstalled my antivirus... I tried all the stuff people suggested (the ones that were having similar issues with those Preview versions) and nothing worked.
I knew it would have some issues being so new, but not like this. I literally can't use my laptop cause no matter what I'm doing it's bound to freeze and I have to press Power Button to force shut down and then start everything over again.
That's a photo of my frozen screen when I was trying to write this post for the second time. As I was editing this, my laptop froze again, after 10 minutes of being on. It only had Skype and Task Manager running.

I really like windows 8, but im most likely going back to windows 7 because of all the problems im haveing with windows 8, being lag and random freezeing.
So i was on youtube, trying to watch a video and it froze, and my laptop charger being a replacement, it slips out a lot, when it came out the video started working fine again, after that, i have noticed my computer stops lagging when my laptop isnt plugged in. as soon as i plug my laptop in, 5-10 seconds later i freeze, not matter what im on, youtube or just my desktop, it happens.

After two refresh and one clean install of Windows 8 within a two-week period, my computer freezes while I'm running CCleaner. It always stops at the same file:
CUserAppDataLocalTemp\_ME149482PyWinTypes26.dll
First few minutes, I can still use my computer, but after that, I cannot print, cannot open Task Manager, cannot shut down the computer. After numerous attempts, I'm able to close CCleaner, but my computer remains frozen.

My system freezes randomly for a few seconds. In the eventviewer i see often these ESENT (508) warnings:

This problem is likely due to faulty hardware. Please contact your hardware vendor for further assistance diagnosing the problem.
I am using a brand new Intel 520 series SSD.

Windows 8. Occasionally, my computer just stutters (freezes for about half a second) several times in a row, ranging from about 6 to 10 times in a row. Literally everything will stop and freeze during that moment; the screen, sound, mouse, my friends even report that my mic input stutters. This happens about once every hour, usually a bit less than that.
It doesn't matter what I'm doing with the computer when this happens; Playing games, watching a video on YT or just on the desktop, doing nothing.
I've done a few recent changes a few weeks back too. I replaced my NVidia GeForce 470 with the NVidia Geforce 660 Ti. I had also connected my sis' laptop's HDD around there as well, when her laptop broke down.
I've done a SFC scan and I've updated my NVidia drivers multiple times.
My specs:
OS: Windows 8 Enterprise 64 bit
VCard: NVidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti
RAM: 2x 4GB DDR3
CPU: Intel i5 760 @ 2.80GHz
HDD: Samsung HD 103SJ ATA
Motherboard: P55-GD65 (MS-7583) by Micro-Star International

I upgraded my computer from windows 7 to windows 8 on day 1, relatively no problems since then.
About last week I started having trouble with wifi, not sure if its HP bios updates or Windows 8 general updates that may have caused the problem. It's not that it disconnects often, its more like once every few days. Still an annoying problem when I'm working on something and I have to go into my wifi connection and disconnect then reconnect.
Its not the router connection, I've checked it at the same time on my phone and ipad and it's working fine.

My computer is running very slow all the time, but every 30 seconds - 10 minutes my computer freezes lots of times. I have downloaded a lot of things, and I downloaded something before and it made the computer run very slow. I just wanted to know if the download had anything to do with it.

My PC
CPU: i7 2700K
MoBo: Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 670
Surround Sound Receiver: Onkyo 515
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro
My pc has been running great for about two years now, but starting a couple weeks ago I have been noticing an occasional audio "hiccup" once or twice per hour where everything seems to lag out for a half-second. If a computer could fart it would sound like this stutter I am talking about.
This audio stutter occurs whether i am listening to music, watching videos, or playing games. I have since performed a clean re-install of windows 8.1, and run the system file checker to verify the integrity of my OS files, but the problem persists. I have tried two of the most recent Nvidia drivers (including a beta) for the GTX 670, and will try reverting back to older drivers next.
I don't believe it to be a problem with the receiver because I have tested it on other inputs (TV, PS3) and the problem is not seen (heard) there.

I have a HP Pavillion Sleekbook 15-b002ee with Third generation core i5 processor 1.7 GHz, 500 GB Hard disk and 4 GB of RAM installed. Windows 8 came pre installed on it.
I bought this laptop 11 months ago and it worked fine for 10 months and then from the last month its presenting unusual problems. My disk usage is stuck at 100% and the laptop freezes and never lets me work or do anything. Heres what i have already done to solve the issue but have been unsuccessful:
1) I have reset my PC completely and reinstalled windows 8 using the factory setup. Didnt solve the issue, newly installed windows displays the disk usage 100% and the performance is same i.e the system freezes.
2) I have tried adjusting my paging file, no change made a difference to the performance of my laptop. The default system managed Paging file size is something around 3.89 Gb. Does my problem have anything to do with my paging file?
3) disabling the "Windows Search" and "Superfetch" services and still it didnt solve the problem.
4) I have also run checkdisk on my hard drive completely. It took me a complete day to do so but still no change.
5) Before resetting my laptop, an error called "Kernel_data_inpage(http.sys)" used to come on my upgraded windows 8.1. Whats the issue?
So what should i do? Is there any problem with my hardware? Is my hard drive having bad sectors and is that causing the problem?

My computer started freezing while downloading large files in uTorrent, About 10 minutes after starting uTorrent the PC starts to be really really slow and 1 minute after it freezes, only restarted/shutdown solve the problem, I've been using uTorrent for years and never had this problem, I mean it happens when I download a 15GB movie, but two months ago I downloaded a 170GB TV series and no problems were with that.
So I thought maybe its a problem in the HDD (not in the space, I have aprox. 150GB free in C and 220GB in D), I don't really know what to do.

I've had my Windows 8 computer for several months... it's been working really well, absolutely no problems.
But today... when I turned on my computer... I signed into my account like always (the only admin account on the computer)... and it keeps signing me into a temporary profile instead.
A balloon pops up in the corner, telling me it's a temporary account and to try again later or something.
I restarted the computer about five times... but still... it takes me to a temporary account, rather than my real account.

Ever since I installed Windows 8 (and now Windows 8.1 Pro Preview Build 9431), I hear occasional buzzing sounds while playing .mp3 files on my desktop computer (Dell XPS 8500). This occurs using both iTunes and Winamp. The .mp3 files play fine on other devices, such as my iPod. This makes me suspect that this is a Windows problem.

Recently I updated to 8.1, and now after maybe a week I get the occasional Instruction memory error with 0x000000 type codes.
At one point whenever I logged in it would popup with explorer.exe failed, so I wouldn't be able to do anything on the PC, I restored to a system restore point and it now is gone, however I will see it every now and again. Not a big deal now, but I would like to repair it if possible, as it obviously can't be doing any good for the PC.
