Maintenance :: WinKey X Shutdown Options Not Operating Correctly?
May 26, 2014
I have a new ASUS ET2702IGTH with 8 to 8.1.1. I have noticed some strange behavior when using the Winkey+X menu to shutdown or sleep the unit. If I use the power button on the Start Page, it operates correctly.
After testing I have realized however the system is requested to enter sleep results in a Shutdown, after about 2 or 3 minutes, when an APP such as Bing Weather is open. This means open with an icon on the Taskbar . If it is only partially open, with the Task Manger showing the app, the system will not shutdown or sleep.
But using the Winkey menu, a Shutdown results in a shutdown, but takes several minutes. If I select Sleep, the unit shuts down. Since it appears there must be some difference in the command issued by the different power buttons, how to compare the two options to see what might be going on?
I do not know if this situation might introduce some type of problem on a system, but since the behavior is different, the system might be left in an unusual condition.
I have not tried the options from the Charms bar. McAfee is currently on this system since it was part of the bloatware. Possibly its behavior is different for the two shutdown options.

I recently purchased an Asus N56VJ with Windows 8 pre-installed. At first I was trying to downgrade to Windows 7, but could not get past the windows splash screen trying to do a clean install . Anyway, while I was trying to figure out how to install windows 7, I was messing around in the bios. I decided to just stick with the Windows 8, but my bios is screwed up. I do not have any boot configuration options anymore. I tried to flash my bios, but the bios was still the same. I did a full reset on my machine, and still no change in the bios. Is there any way to get my bios options back to the factory settings with all the options?

I have a Win 8.1 laptop without a disk drive which also did not come with a cd of operating system. What software, preferably free, can I use to copy my operating system to USB in case I ever need to reinstall Win 8.1?
How do I just copy the operating system without all the software I have added since acquiring this laptop?

When I've been running certain programs on my computer, I keep getting the message, program has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. This has happened to me in Internet Explorer when I try to play movies, Windows Media Player, Norton Internet Security and when I try to run Windows Experience index.
Some programs wont even open. My computer has been running fine since I purchased it 8 months ago. This started happening after a windows update a couple of weeks ago. I've refreshed windows 8 twice, ran a full system virus scan, ran malwarebytes and it found nothing. I also tried sfc /scannow and used dism /online /cleanup-image /restore health to fix component store corruption and fix corrupt system files and also tried gwscan from Hirens boot cd. I generated a system health report and this is what the report came up with:

I have a laptop with 8.0 pre-installed.Could normally access the lock screen with WinKey-L.
Since update to 8.1, this is no longer possible.(all other keyboard shortcuts that I've tried, works OK)
Account is local with admin rights; pwd protected; not MS-account. No other accounts. When I start the laptop, I have the Lock Screen to enter pwd.
I can get to the settings page to customise the Lock Screen, but not back to the Lock Screen!
Why can I not get to the Lock Screen with WinKey-L? (what settings are preventing this?)

When I first got my new personal computer in January, I created a System Image using Microsoft's utility. I typically use Acronis for my backups, but after major changes, I use both Microsoft and Acronis.
Now, I am attempting to complete a System Image Backup using Microsoft's utility so that I can fix my SecureBoot concern, knowing that I have a safety net in place. Unfortunately, I am unable to complete a backup. BoxxTech suggests that I use Microsoft's utility.
I begin with the File History in the Control Panel as shown below. Note, that I have plenty of room on my FreeAgent F Drive (standalone USB drive). Yet, Microsoft's utility believes otherwise.
Only the three items that shown to be selected are selected. In other words, there are no other drives or partitions off-screen that are selected.
Thinking that it might be a problem with my external USB hard drive, I look at using one of my internal drives, T.
I get the same error message as shown earlier.
why I am unable to back-up my personal computer using Windows 8.1?

The power options on my computer have stopped working. The screen does not dim or turn off automatically and the computer does not sleep automatically.
I bought my HP Pavilion 20 all in one desktop two weeks ago and then power options stopped working a week ago everything else seems OK. I looked in the console and "balance" is checked, going further, all the times are set (display dimmed 5 mins, turn off display 10 mins, put computer to sleep 30 mins). A day or so before this happened I replaced the standard (rather cheap) wired keyboard and mouse with a Logitech k360 Keyboard and m326 mouse (both wireless).
I can put the computer to sleep using the keyboards sleep button. I also temporarily changed the "Put Computer to Sleep" section in Power Options console to "never" when "Windows Photo Gallery" needed to update the face recondition on my photos transferred from my old computer (it took over 24 hours). After "Windows Photo Gallery" had finished I changed it back to 30 mins and since then no power options.

For the longest while I've had issues with my Windows 8.1 ignoring my selection of power options. By this I mean by CPU will stay clocked at 1.4GHz when it should be hitting around 2.3GHz when I set to high performance from power saving mode.
In the past it's cleared up by itself or through reboots but I'm thoroughly pissed off and I want it fixed.

I went into my power options to change some of the advanced settings and most of them are missing? I am on windows 8.1 with a week old Surface Pro 3. I want to say I read somewhere that hyper-v can cause options to be missing, but I honestly don't even know what that is and I don't have it installed.

I'm looking for a way to automatically shutdown PC at midnight and turn it back on at 16h during work days (while I'm at work). Is there a way to do that in the built-in scheduler or is there an app for that?

Every now and then when I shut down my computer it will show "Restarting" for about 1-5 seconds (My pc is fast) and the display will shut off. But the computer will still be running, the HDD and all are running. I have to do a hard shutdown by holding the power button.
I have found this in the event logger:
"The system firmware has changed the processor's memory type range registers (MTRRs) across a sleep state transition (S5). This can result in reduced resume performance."
Source: Kernel-Power
I heard it having something to do with "fast startup" or "Quick Boot" I am unsure.

About 3 times now this has happened, I'll shutdown my PC using the tile target "C:WindowsSystem32shutdown.exe -s -t 00" and usually there is a delay in between shutting down and it randomly booting itself which makes it really weird that it isn't just an instant restart instead of shutdown. It's not a very long delay really, maybe 1-2 minutes.
The last two times I remember it was around 3:00 AM which is when it was set in Action Center Maintenance Settings to wake up the computer and run the scan. The thing is, I unchecked it from Maintenance Settings Friday night and it still happened last night (and it was kind of weird last night with daylight savings and all..) also, does the "wake up" to scan boot a completely shut down computer or just one idle/asleep?
After searching on this forum there seems to be some issues with Avast 2014 and boot issues. My 8.1 doesn't have any slow booting issues but perhaps it's related that this is the anti-virus I run.
I checked the Event Viewer Log and selected Power-Troubleshooter but I didn't see an event for the past two nights. powercfg lastwake command displays "Wake History Count - 0"
I never encountered this issue with Windows 7 or Windows 8 so it's hard to imagine it could be BIOS related?

I'm running into a really annoying issue after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8.
I first noticed it during the initial (clean) install; when the installer tried to reboot, my machine (an acer aspire 4755G) just hung after the initial shutdown. That is, after the screen turns off, the power lights and fans are still running, and the machine itself doesn't restart. (I let it sit for a good 15 minutes, and it still didn't change).
I managed to do a hard reset (power button for 5 seconds) and the install finished, but every shutdown/restart has been like that. Interestingly enough, hibernate works just fine.
I've looked at other solutions where it said to use the "bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes" command, and that didn't work.
I also turned off the "Fast Boot" option in the power settings menu. That didn't work either. So far, the only option is to do the hard shut down by holding down the power button, but that proves to be horribly inconvenient.
I've also updated all my drivers to the proprietary onces given by Acer, yet this problem still persists! It worked fine on Windows 7, so I'm not sure what went wrong here.

My system has been on completely since 8.1 and has never needed to restart until I did some updates today.
Now I'm not really concerned about shutdown or restart as I will manually shut down the PC if I'm going somewhere for an extended time "I never leave anything on, power for the entire house is shut off" and will shut it off until I get back.
But the slow login is really killing me as it used to take 1 second to hear that little "tick" from the speakers and I'd see the login/splash page, but as of today I will hear that "tick" but the windows dotted circle will spin for oh.. 30 seconds than I can see my splash screen.
I've scanned my C: and D: disks, ran defender, antivirus, etc and all came back fine and I even have 90GB free out of my 120gb drive.

I have been running Win 8 on my ASUS Q200E Laptop and have been puzzled by the difference in the startup times between a cold, power off start up and a restart startup. On a cold startup, the desktop is completely ready to use in about 20 seconds. With a restart, it takes about 38 seconds to get to the same point.

I do a shutdown from the Windows Logon screen which I believe is a full power off rather than a hybrid shutdown:
(The process C:WINDOWSsystem32winlogon.exe (XXXXX) has initiated the power off of computer XXXX on behalf of user NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM for the following reason: No title for this reason could be found
Reason Code: 0x500ff Shut-down Type: power off)
However when I restart the computer it then goes into a black screen with a pointer and never completes reboot.
The only way to fix this is to reboot again which I am guessing is using the "Hybrid Boot" profile:
"The last shutdown's success status was false. The last boot's success status was true."
This did not occur in Windows 8.
How to diagnose the shutdown culprit?

Friend of mine had a dual boot of windows 7&8 then, he tried to remove windows 8( it's partition was active but windows 7 wasn't active), he first deleted Windows 8 from msconfig then tried to delete the partition of windows 8( but Disk management didnt allow him neither easeus partition manager did, so he tried to keep windows 7 partition as active using easeus manager, then after completing the action, the PC failed to start, he tried automatic repair, but that bore no fruit... the PC says " Couldn't find any operating system, press ctrl+alt+del to restart...
edit: my idiotic friend after removing windows 8 from msconfig, upgraded win7 to Windows 8... suspect that MBR software has been corrupted... so is there any way to make his PC , boot again and remove the windows 8's( previously clean installed) partition ...

After about 3 or 4 minutes, the laptop opens the automatic repair feature and this comes up on the screen [URL] ..... I have tried tapping both F8 and F12 throughout start up to try and repair the computer although this doesnt work either. I have opened the boot menu and tried to select the HDD Recovery option although it says no bootable media, please restart system.
