How To Enable Lock Screen In With WinKey L - 8.1
Nov 8, 2013I have a laptop with 8.0 pre-installed.Could normally access the lock screen with WinKey-L.
Since update to 8.1, this is no longer possible.(all other keyboard shortcuts that I've tried, works OK)
Account is local with admin rights; pwd protected; not MS-account. No other accounts.When I start the laptop, I have the Lock Screen to enter pwd.
I can get to the settings page to customise the Lock Screen, but not back to the Lock Screen!
Why can I not get to the Lock Screen with WinKey-L? (what settings are preventing this?)
Maintenance :: WinKey X Shutdown Options Not Operating Correctly?
May 26, 2014I have a new ASUS ET2702IGTH with 8 to 8.1.1. I have noticed some strange behavior when using the Winkey+X menu to shutdown or sleep the unit. If I use the power button on the Start Page, it operates correctly.
After testing I have realized however the system is requested to enter sleep results in a Shutdown, after about 2 or 3 minutes, when an APP such as Bing Weather is open. This means open with an icon on the Taskbar . If it is only partially open, with the Task Manger showing the app, the system will not shutdown or sleep.
But using the Winkey menu, a Shutdown results in a shutdown, but takes several minutes. If I select Sleep, the unit shuts down. Since it appears there must be some difference in the command issued by the different power buttons, how to compare the two options to see what might be going on?
I do not know if this situation might introduce some type of problem on a system, but since the behavior is different, the system might be left in an unusual condition.
I have not tried the options from the Charms bar. McAfee is currently on this system since it was part of the bloatware. Possibly its behavior is different for the two shutdown options.
Full Screen Flash Video Very Poor Quality
Oct 16, 2013Whenever I go full screen on youtube it looks terrible.
Blurry and 256 colours. Something similar happens to the desktop when I leave fullscreen from VLC or VirtualBox. That makes sense though, I guess this is some metro related memory saving process.

I switch to Standard User Account and only when I click on my folders the screen flash to a blank page and take me back to the main desktop page. Dec 22, 2013My MSI GE70 laptop with windows 8 64 has recently been having an issue while watching videos (whether it is a downloaded file or a stream) where the screen will suddenly go black and the sound will go away, but the cursor will still be visible with the spinning circle to show me it is working on something. It will just stay black and nothing will respond, even CTRL-ALT-DEL. The only way to fix it is to restart the computer by holding down the power button. It doesn't give me any error messages before this happens or on start up afterwards. It isn't overheating, and I didn't install any new drivers before this started.

Jul 4, 2013I have upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 to Windows 8 since a while. So now here's my problem.
If I watch a video with Windows Media Player, then the video only has sound, the screen is black.
If I watch a video with the Video App from Windows 8, then it also only shows a black screen. (Audio works) After a few seconds the App crashes.
Also every App that has to do something with a video (like a YouTube App) keeps crashing. With Internet Explorer (App and Desktop) before the same. (for example : Youtube) Now it seems to work, don't know why.
The only way to watch videos is using VLC.

Sep 15, 2014It pops up on the video screen I want to watch in Fox News website -- I haven't noticed it popping up on other sites as yet. It will list the site asking for permission to store information on my computer. The link I have attached below gives instructions on how to remove this pop-up. Is this flash player thing safe or is it some kind of virus or malware? The attached link refers to it as spyware. If I were to remove the Flash player program, will it affect playing games or whatever on my laptop.

Nov 12, 2013Okay so I haven't gotten a proper BSOD since the computer doesn't actually power down, the screen just goes black and the speakers play a buzzing sound. It doesn't happen too often and if it does it usually seems to be within a few hours of turning the computer on (I leave it running unless I go away for a day or so). Seems to me the problem could be just about anything from the PSU to the GPU to the software.

Sep 15, 2014I have the laptop as stated above, i have had it a week and the user before me had decided to put on 7 instead of 8. i completely wiped and restored to windows 8.1, installed all sammy drivers and ensured it is all up to date.
the laptop had huge instability issues, the hdd was on its way out as mbr was damaged and the heads were ticking badly. then i found the ram was not secured in the sockets properly too. so i fixed it all!
Anyways back to the problem. i have the realtek hd audio drivers installed from sammy, reinstalled the ones from realtek themselves and still nothing.
Main issue, mic and speakers built in work and are fully detected. but the microphone port and headphone port are not detected, no matter what i plug into them.
Tiles Just Flash On And Off Together - Cannot Access Any App
Feb 25, 2014HP laptop i5 Radeon graphics Windows 8. When it it starts up and you log in the tiles just keep flashing on and off together and you can't use any apps or do anything. There are no error messages. It will not boot into safe mode with f8. When you go to troubleshooting. It will not let you use system restore it says preparing system restore then the screen goes black with just the cursor, which still moves. It will not let you use refresh or repair, the same thing happens. The hard drive appears to be doing something and the machine gets hot but after 1hour the screen is still black and it appears just to be hanging. I cannot access command prompt either.

I ask because I wonder if I made an image on an external HD when it comes to the actual restoration, would the external HD boot, if say my OS is so corrupt it won't boot into the OS. I have an ASUS K55N DS81 laptop. Also, I feel I would need a 128GB flash drive because of the size of the saved space on my HD and I wonder if I should just go ahead and buy the external HD and save money.

Feb 20, 2014I just happened to switch over to Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit. I previously had WinXP SP3.
Now, i have an old laptop: Core2Duo T5200 1,6 GHz, Intel GMA 950 (256 MB) and 2 GB DDR2.
The problem is after switching to Win8 YouTube videos lag in normal view (480p, 720p, doesn't matter), and they stop logging after going full-screen. But i rarely watch things in full-screen. With WinXP videos were smooth and no lagging occured.
I have the latest Flash, latest updates, latest GPU drivers (considering Intel stopped offering ones back in 2009, so i used the ones Win Update offered). Is it because my rig is too old, and this Metro interface is eating up much of the GPU/CPU?

Jul 31, 2014I bought a new Lenovo Y510p laptop a few months back, and just last week I decided to transition from my old computer to this laptop. The OS was Windows 8 for the laptop, later upgraded to 8.1, and everything was fine until about three days later when suddenly I realized that whenever I went on Youtube or any website with flash-based content(using Chrome btw) AND games such as WoW they crashed.
I assumed it was a problem with the new 8.1 or something with updating the graphics drivers, so I decided to completely factory reset back to 8. Re-installed Chrome and my games, and it worked fine again for a day, then started to crash again. At that point I downgraded my windows 8 to windows 7. Re-installed everything again, but it still crashed. Can't play youtube, flash content, or any games(not even the pre-installed windows games like minesweeper, solitare, etc.).

Jan 22, 2014I got this new Asus Transformer which is a Windows 8.1 system.
I made a few images with Macrium Reflect and created an UEFI recovery Flash Drive (with Macrium) for the Macrium recovery program. I can set the BIOS to boot from the stick (in the temporary or permanent BIOS settings). Problem is, when I hit Enter, it ignores the stick and boots directly into 8.1.
Is there another setting in the BIOS that I have to make in order to have it boot from the stick.

The question is is it possible to install and then boot from a Windows 8 USB Flash Drive? If so, how would I go about doing this? Also, what is the minimum size USB Flash Drive that could be used? I want at least some room to work with and install apps but it won't be my primary OS. If it's not possible to do this how would I go about making a dual boot system? Already I have a 500GB HD with Windows 7 installed but I believe I'd have to repartition and hope to avoid having to reinstall Windows 7 since I have so many installed apps.

Basically it wont boot when using a USB 3.0 flash drive (which is faster than the external usb 3 hard drive am using) It simply stalls on the boot image part (The blue windows icon). And on my laptop it gives a blue screen type error. Yet wont let me boot into safe mode when using flash drive. However when I use external drive it works fine although the performance isn't great.
At first I though it could have been an issue with the boot/350mb partition so I copied that over. Still the same. I have also tried a fresh windows to go install with same results.
