Maintenance :: UEFI Bios Settings For Windows 8

Apr 11, 2013

what settings are required in the UEFI Bios to run recovery USB/ disks or Linux live CDs. It all used to be so simple. The manufacturer seems unaware that it supplies UEFI systems - so I am working blind. Have tried boot CDs and USBs but all have booted straight into Windows to date. I don't wish to change settings I have no understanding of.

I have a Medion /Lenovo desktop with an AMI UEFI Bios (12 July 2012) and Aptio Setup.

The following seem relevant are supplied as enabled in "Bios":

Intel Rapid Startup Technology
Quiet Boot
Boot Select Mode [UEFI]
UEFI Hard Disk BBS Priorities - Boot Option #1 - Windows Boot Manager
Secure Boot - Secure Boot Mode [Standard]

What do these all mean and what effect do they have on how Windows 8 runs and how boot drives run?

Maintenance :: PC Hangs In BIOS Can't Boot

Dec 20, 2013

When I turn the power on, my desktop PC (a Hewlett-Packard) goes into a BIOS startup routine that says "Preparing Automatic Repair" and then "Diagnosing Your PC" which has to finish before it will load Windows or any OS. I've seen it before, and usually it just takes a few seconds. But now it's stopping at the "Diagnosing" message and won't go any further. I turn it off and on, and it does the same thing again. I can get into the BIOS menus and choose other options like booting from another drive, recovery options, etc. but no matter what I choose it starts the BIOS over again and gets hung up on the "Diagnosing" step, so I can't boot ANYTHING.

Any way to bypass or break out of this BIOS startup loop so I can get to Windows?

I have Windows 8.1 Enterprise x64, with Update 1. I want to ask you, where can be problem.

CPU --> Intel(R) Core i5 3230M 2,6 - 3,2 ghz
GPU --> Intel HD 4000 and nVidia GeForce GT740M 2GB (it switches how it needs)

HDD --> 750 gb with 5400 rpm --> (ST750LM022_HN-M750MBB)

I have installed windows like 2 days ago.

Now my questions:

1. Is it normal, when I just boot Windows, right after iccons apear, when I click to open some application, for example internet browser (using chrome) it takes long time? Like 6 seconds? But if I after windows boot wait 10 sec, then its working normally?

Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 - 100% CPU That Disappears When Open Task Manager

Jan 24, 2014

I updated to Windows 8.1 last month. It was quite smooth until some issues started 2-4 days ago. I don't remember if I have done something that may cause this, but I'm quite sure that I didn't make any change to the system.

The problem is, even when I am not opening any applications, my fan suddenly blows very strong and makes loud noise. From the CoreTemp utility I notice that CPU usage is 100% and its temperature is much higher than normal.
Again, this happens even when I am not opening any applications, and have started the computer hours ago (so it's not starting up).

The most strange thing is that the problem is solved completely when I open task manager. The first thing I see after doing that is task manager itself is taking up ~60-70% CPU, but that number goes down very quickly, and the total CPU usage drops to normal. The temperature shown in CoreTemp drops also and the fan becomes quiet.

Another issue with my current computer is that when I open certain applications (for example, Google Chrome), the process of the application appears in task manager, but in the background. And the application does not show up until 10-20 minutes later.

And when I use Windows Media Player, every song is stucked for ~5 seconds before being played. And there're spikes in the sound.

UEFI BIOS Firmware Restart Doesn't Boot To BIOS

Dec 12, 2013

I just built a desktop with a sabertooth x79 motherboard, and am running Windows 8.1 pro 64-bit. When I click the UEFI BIOS Firmware live tile via the change PC settings>update and recovery>recovery>etc. my computer reboots normally to Windows and will not open BIOS. I have tried accessing it using the delete and f2 keys, but this does nothing either.

I am up to date in terms of my BIOS, and am definitely running UEFI and not legacy.

Maintenance :: Windows 8 - Disk At 100% When Open Google Chrome Or Internet Explorer

Jul 10, 2013

Here's what happened. Yesterday in the morning i was on my laptop (windows 8).

When suddenly, it started going really slow. I restarted it and every time i log into my account, i goes a bit slower, but not too much. Then whenever i open Google Chrome or Internet Explorer, the disk space goes straight up to 100% and doesn't go down. I went into safe mode and it didn't go slow then so it must be something else. I also downloaded AVG and scanned my computer but it found no threats. I have made a new account, which goes slow sometimes but is fine most of the time.

Maintenance :: File History Won't Open / Start?

Jan 10, 2013

Running Windows 8 Pro x64 as a Domain User with full Admin privileges, I am unable to use File History. I cannot open/start the File History tool. When I attempt to click on it from the Control Panel, nothing happens. When I try running it from the Metro search tool, it switches to the desktop and nothing loads. I've also tried in the Action Center, under Maintenance, "File History is Off. Turn On." Clicking "Turn On" does nothing.

All other items under the Control Panel that I have tried open and work with no problems.

I also tried in a "clean boot". System file checker reported no errors.

I just noticed in Control Panel there is "Windows 7 File Recovery". If I launch that and try to set up a Windows 7-style backup, it seems to work. I suppose I could just use this older tool instead of the new File History, although I haven't researched the differences.

I have another machine with the same version of Windows 8, and I am able to launch File History with no problems. I click File History from control panel and am taken to another screen that allows me to enable it. No such screen on the problem machine. The only main difference is the working machine is a regular user account; whereas, the non working machine is a domain account

Maintenance :: Can't Open Mounted VHDX Backup Image

Jan 21, 2014

I can't open the mounted image in the disk management console. This is my backup image from my previous win 8.1 pro x64 system. Its stored on a external hdd w/ bit locker protection. My problem is I want to recover some files from the previous image but when I mount the vdhx image, the "Open", when i right click on the partition on the disk mgt console, is greyed out. I also noticed that no drive letter is assigned after i mounted it. I have tried converting it to vhd using Hyper-V, then opening it in win 7 but the same thing happens. It gets mounted, but no letter assigned and still can not be opened in the explorer. Are there 3rd-party tools to open & mount vhdx files?

Maintenance :: Get BIOS Options Back To Factory Settings With All Options?

Apr 20, 2013

I recently purchased an Asus N56VJ with Windows 8 pre-installed. At first I was trying to downgrade to Windows 7, but could not get past the windows splash screen trying to do a clean install . Anyway, while I was trying to figure out how to install windows 7, I was messing around in the bios. I decided to just stick with the Windows 8, but my bios is screwed up. I do not have any boot configuration options anymore. I tried to flash my bios, but the bios was still the same. I did a full reset on my machine, and still no change in the bios. Is there any way to get my bios options back to the factory settings with all the options?

Maintenance :: System Restore Takes Slightly More Than 2 Minutes To Open

Feb 5, 2014

both Win 8.1 Pro 64 bit machines. When my intent is to go to a system restore point, from System Properties and then click on System Restore it takes slightly more than 2 minutes for the Restore dialog window to open. This is from the Desktop which I use almost exclusively.

This is an update from Windows 8, which behaved the same, and has had a repair install to see if that would work. It didn't. I have tried your Shadow copy entries mentioned earlier but with no improvement. I have resorted to a third party program "RestorePointCreator.exe" Which works quickly like Win 7 does.

My dual booted Win 7 Pro opens almost by the time my finger releases the mouse button

Windows BIOS Icon

Jun 13, 2013

I have a question about the looks of my BIOS startup screen. I have a relatively new ASUS laptop and i instaled windows 8 on it as soon as possible because ASUS had a free upgrade action.

Everything went well but what i noticed is that when i boot up and the BIOS runs i get in stead of the windows 8 logo with the loading-circle the ASUS logo with the logo circle. Its not annoying or something but i just want the windows logo because i think its nicer.

My friend said it had to do with a BIOS or boot configuration with a ASUS fancy patch switched on.

Ans yes ive already tried replacing my bootres.dll file but it wont give me permission to rename the old bootres file and the new file does not contain the windows logo.

Embedding Windows 8.X Key To BIOS?

Oct 12, 2014

After a thorough search, I didn't find anyway possible to embed a key inside BIOS just like the OEM manufacturers do. The case scenario is quite simple:

Using NoOS(Ubuntu/Dos) laptops that also get marketed with pre-installed Windows 8.X. Purchase bulk OEM, and prepare the laptop to work with exactly the same setup (e.g. UEFI BIOS embedded Windows key) as if it was purchased pre-installed.

Windows 8 PC Will Not Boot Up At All / Stuck On BIOS

Jun 23, 2013

I have a pretty new computer. Just a few months old. It is supposed to be a good one.

Dell XPS 8500
Quad core i7 processor
lots of memory and extras

This computer also has the 64 bit edition of Windows 8 installed on it. Windows 8 is driving me up the wall!!! I have had numerous problems with it since day 1.

As recently as a few days ago, my system was running reasonably okay. Then I downloaded a driver for my network card from the dell.com website. From that point on, I cannot get my computer to boot up properly. I have turned my computer off and on multiple times in hopes that it would correct whatever is wrong.

When I first turn my PC on, it will stay stuck at the Dell logo window for a while.

Sometimes it will make it past that and it will give me an error message that says:

"error sending end of post message to ME, system HALT!"

Also, I sometimes get a message which says:

"the last USB device you connected to the computer malfunctioned, and Windows did not recognize it.

Try reconnecting the device. If windows still does not recognize it, your device may not be working properly."

This is insanity. I have NOT connected any new USB devices to my computer.

I do not know what to do. I figured that the easiest thing might be to try simply reinstalling Windows 8 from scratch. So I inserted my Windows 8 reinstall disk that Dell sent me when I bought this thing. However, my computer will not boot from this disk. So I guess I am stuck.

Why Is BIOS Insecure On New Windows 8 Laptop

Dec 20, 2012

I just received my new Dell Inspiron 15R-5520 64 bit laptop running Windows 8. It came with a new BIOS that supports both UEFI and Legacy. Compared to the BIOS on my old Dell Inspiron laptop it seems very insecure. I'm referring to access to the boot order. In my old BIOS I could set a password which was necessary for changing the boot order and either enabling or disabling devices within the boot list. Thus one could select the HDD and disable all other devices such as CD/DVD and Flashdrives. The new BIOS includes passwords as well, but they don't restrict access to the boot order and there doesn't seem to be any way to disable devices from the boot list. In the case that my laptop is stolen it's nice to prevent the thief from quickly booting off a CD or flashdrive and accessing all my files, etc. why the new BIOS removed this seemingly important security feature?

BIOS Changes Windows Boot Manager Order By Itself

Jul 14, 2014

I have an error message at boot time that says [fail] twice then boots normally.

I have tracked it down in other posts to the bios which I change and it works for awhile but then mysteriously changes itself back.

Here is what I do.
F2 at Dell logo
move tab to "boot"
Reorder the boot order to the following:
Windows Boot Manager
UEFI Onboard LAN IPv4
UEFI Onboard LAN IPv6

then save and exit
machine reboots without error message
Runs/boots fine for awhile then message reappears.
Going back into BIOS shows Windows Boot Manager has moved to the bottom of the list again.

Repeating the fix is only temporary.

How can I set up the BIOS to stay where I put it?

I have a Dell running Win 8.1
