Installed 8.1 And Now PC Won't Boot
Jun 27, 2013
Last night I installed windows 8.1 preview through the windows store. It all worked fine and it seemed like there was nothing wrong. When I woke up this morning my pc gets past the windows loading screen (The new fish thing looks just plain stupid) but then my screen just goes black. The screen is still on and receiving a signal but my pc won't get to the start screen.
I tried booting without any USB device plugged in.
I tried booting to safe mode but it had the same problem.
Start-up repair did not work. I removed my graphics card and used my the i5 2500k's graphics chip but still no use.
Before I installed 8.1 I removed the classic start-menu app before installing.
Is there anything else I can try before re-installing? All my files are backed up so it wont affect me that much but it will just be annoying to re-install all of my programs.

I have a couple of 4GB usb pen drives and a 16 GB ADATA one.
When I want to boot from the Linux I have installed in the pen drive, do I have to go to F2, enter the bios and set it to boot from USB or can I tap F12 and do it that way. I have used the 3 major installers, Linux Live USB installer, UNetbootin and USB Universal Installer and cannot get Ubuntu or any distro to boot from this drive. I have formatted it as FAT 32 not NTFS.
I had some success booting from the 4GB pen drives with some distros but not always.
I installed Zorin OS which was great but it started to ask for a password which was never mentioned in the process so I had to delete it.
The question is, am I booting wrong to be making so many errors? I have a Win 8.1 OS with 6 GB ram.
I have 3 4GB pen drives and a 16 GB drive. The 16 is an ADATA and the others are Sandisk.
All I want is a live USB with persistence for updates. I found Ubuntu the easiest and Zorin equal to it except for the password issue.

I am trying to set up my windows 7 laptop so that it duel boots between 7 and 8 which sounds great. My existing W7 partition has been shrunk and a new partition has been created ready for the install however when trying to install using the disk, I keep being told that windows cant be installed onto the partition due to the disk being a MBR format (think that what the three letters are) .
Is there a way round this without having to remove the current install and remove all of my content.

I am using Windows 8.1. I have an Acer Aspire V5-571P computer with Windows 8.1 pre-installed. I want to install my licensed copy of Windows 7 Professional on it as a dual boot to dual boot Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. I have seen that it can be done, but I cannot figure out how to correctly do it. I have already had to re-install Windows 8.1 once from a USB Recovery drive which was not fun. So how to do it and get it done. I love windows 7 Pro but I can't figure out how to do it.
I have already turned off secure boot in bios. However, UEFI mode is still active vs legacy bios which is the other mode I have.

I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro 64 Bit. If I go to Control Panel/Windows Update/View Update History KB2919442 is shown as installed successfully on the 12 March 2014 "BUT" if I go to Control Panel/Windows Update/Installed Updates there is no KB2919442 listed.
If I download KB2919442 directly from Microsoft and try to install it manually it says "This update is not applicable to your computer"
I'm obviously having no success trying to install KB2919355 as it never shows as available in Windows Update and if I download it manually from Microsoft and try installing manually I get the same error message "This update is not applicable to your computer"

Installing WMC Add-On appears to change Windows 8's cd key to that used to install the add-on. I had to re-activate the OS after that. The new OS's name is shown as "Windows 8 Pro with Windows Media Center".
I am wondering if the CD Key for Windows 8 Pro remains valid. What is the process of reinstalling Windows 8 Pro with WMC without its setup DVD.

5. Kingston HyperX Fury is not on my mobo's compatibility list

I just bought the HP Envy 17t-j100 Quad Edition with the 1TB hybrid drive and the 240GB SSD Upgrade Kit that you can get on the Customize and Buy page. I wanted to put the OS onto the SSD because I haul my laptop all over the countryside for work and it takes a beating and the SSD withstands that kind of treatment better. After a huge fiasco of trying to get mounting brackets and connecting cable that should come with the kit but don't, I finally got the thing physically installed in my second drive bay.
I tried using Acronis True Image to clone it over, as that was the cloning software that came with the SSD but apparently that version was incompatible with 8.1. So I bought the newer version, but apparently Acronis won't work if the drives are that different in size. I finally had a repair shop guy migrate it over for me but he had to enable Legacy booting to do it and now I have this obnoxious message in the lower right part of my screen:
"Windows 8.1
SecureBoot isn't configured correctly
Build 9600"
That is a minor annoyance and if I have to live with it, so be it. But I also find myself having difficulty downloading drivers from HP because now that I have a new SSD instead of the original hybrid drive, my specs no longer conform to the specs of my model of laptop and HP can't figure out which drivers are the right ones for my machine. I know I should have had the guy at the shop keep it and finish the job properly but I need my computer for my work and can't be without it overnight. My old laptop died and I'm limping along with this one as best I can until I get it up to speed.
The guy from the shop told me that I would have to disable Legacy booting if I wanted to get rid of that message. He also told me that to do that I would need to create a bootable disk and then re-install 8.1 after disabling Legacy booting on the SSD. This is the point at which my limited expertise fails me.
I am having trouble creating the bootable USB drive because when I try to download the file and enter my product key it says, "This product key cannot be used to install a retail version of WIndows 8.1." I take that to mean that my pre-installed 8.1 product key is not the same as the type of key needed for the download. So I'm stuck there.
My main question is this: Will it work to just do a full re-install using the existing 8.1 that was migrated from the hybrid drive to my SSD or will I end up screwed because I can't find the right drivers once I remove the few drivers the shop guy installed for me because I'm on a different type of drive than HP recognizes?

I installed Windows 8 x32 on my laptop. It has 3 GB RAM and the processor is x64-based. I don't use my laptop for much other than e-mail, Facebook, YouTube. Here are my questions:
Is there any point to switch from x32 to x64?
Is there any down side? I read somewhere that I won't be able to run 16-bit applications (I don't even know if they still exist)?
Do I need to do a clean install, or can I use the Upgrade install option rather than the Custom (advanced) install option?

I installed Office 365 about a month ago and used it several times. Today I went to use Word and it is not there. It is not in the programs list in the uninstall programs. Then I started looking for the other programs in the suite and the only one that is there although not in the uninstall programs is excel which I attached to the task bar, but I can use the spreadsheets.
3 days ago I installed Lightroom 5 and it also has dissapeared. My husband has had the same problems with office.

I tried to install more RAM, but after I put the sticks in, System information told me only 4GB of the 12 total GB were usable. My setup was two 2GB sticks in ports 1 and 2 and four 4GB sticks 3 and 4. I then switched it around and put the two 4GB sticks in ports 1 and 2, and the two 2GB sticks in 3 and 4. After this 8GB of the 12 were usable. Finally I tried putting the 4GB sticks in ports 1 and 3 and the 2GB sticks in ports 2 and 4 and vice versa.

I have a bit of a problem here. I wanted to clone a 2tb sata disk from a karaoke machine, and when I inserted it into my NL54 HP server running windows 8 to perform the clone (to a new 2tb drive), the clone was successful. However, upon inserting the new disk in the karaoke machine, it just caused the karaoke machine to hang. Similarly inserting the original disk caused the same issue.
My question is, if Windows 8 alters or writes to (in any way) a new hard disk installed for the first time? I don't know the exact details of how the disk was previously formatted, however when I did install it in my HP server it auto showed up as a drive and files/folders were accessible - hence I assume it was NTFS.
What I really wanted to do was to do a clone whilst keeping the original write protected, however I don't think there was any pins on the sata disk to protect against this, so my options were limited anyway.

I'm on Windows 8 64-bit on a Toshiba Satellite L750.
My computer has constantly been a pain and has not once been completely usable. There is always some sort of flaw. I deleted everything and installed Windows 8 last week because it seemed as though only 2gb of my 6gb of ram was being used, and I wanted to installed Win 8.
Currently in the Resource Monitor I have 2 gb in use/free and 4gb of is labelled 'Hardware Reserved' and doesn't appear to do anything.
I have spent the past two hours trying out different methods to get it to work, but none of them did, and on the forums I looked at there seemed to be no real solution and the threads just trail off into unrelated problems.
I really need this 4gb to be active so I can actually use my computer properly and use the full 6gb of ram that came with the laptop. This problem has been around on Windows 7 and still exists after doing a fresh install of Windows 8.

I'm using Classic Shell to navigate and I go to the Apps folder. I have tons of apps installed it seams, Weather, Video, Travel, netflix etc.. i don't need any of these and wish to completely remove them from my system. I suspect i should be able to do this from Programs and Features and turning windows features on and off but I don't know where these apps reside.. I can't seem to be able to find any of them in the Windows features area. I also want to uninstall any unneeded apps that show up in the metro start page thing. Not just disable them, or unpin them.. I don't want them on my system at all.

I installed Windows 8 on a separate hard disk plugged into a Windows 7 machine, ultimately of course resulting in a dual boot machine - with 7 on C: and 8 on D:. I added BOOTMGR to the Windows 8 drive (with bcdedit) and have removed the 7 drive leaving only the fresh Windows 8 drive in the PC.
In Windows 8, I can see that the system drive is still D: - 8 doesn't show itself as C: at all, like my Google search results said it should.
I tried changing the drive letter to C from diskmgmt.msc but I get an error saying: "Bad parameter".
Now what's that all about? How to change the system drive into C?

Is there an easy upgrade option for this type of Windows 8 install? Preferably, without losing any data.

I built a computer recently (so it's not a 'store-bought system'), installed 16 GB of RAM, but System Information shows only 2.96 GB as usable. I'm using Win 8, 32-bit, with an Intel i3-2120 (3.30 GHz) CPU on an MSI motherboard. Not a gamer, so I have only a low-end GE Force 210 video card.
From what I gather, Windows 8 (32-bit) only allows a certain amount of RAM to be used. Is this correct? If so, did I make a mistake by installing 16 GB, when I could have installed a lesser amount? For example, if Windows 8/32-bit only recognizes (or at least, uses...) something like 3.5 GB---should I have simply stuck in 4 GB?
FYI, I'm happy with my computer, my wife and I can surf just fine (we have cable Internet, with an advertised speed of 15), and I don't really have any complaints. Just trying to educate myself about installed versus usable RAM.
