I built a computer recently (so it's not a 'store-bought system'), installed 16 GB of RAM, but System Information shows only 2.96 GB as usable. I'm using Win 8, 32-bit, with an Intel i3-2120 (3.30 GHz) CPU on an MSI motherboard. Not a gamer, so I have only a low-end GE Force 210 video card.
From what I gather, Windows 8 (32-bit) only allows a certain amount of RAM to be used. Is this correct? If so, did I make a mistake by installing 16 GB, when I could have installed a lesser amount? For example, if Windows 8/32-bit only recognizes (or at least, uses...) something like 3.5 GB---should I have simply stuck in 4 GB?
FYI, I'm happy with my computer, my wife and I can surf just fine (we have cable Internet, with an advertised speed of 15), and I don't really have any complaints. Just trying to educate myself about installed versus usable RAM.
I have Windows 8.1 32-bit installed and have fitted my PC (Dell Inspiron 531) with 4GB RAM.
The system only reports 3.25gb as usable - where has the remainder gone?
Is it the Graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT)?
I understand that Windows 8.1 32-bit can utilise a full 4GB of RAM?
Also in the Task Manager, it reports that I have used "2 of 2 slots", however I have 4 RAM slots inside the machine where the RAM is fitted (4 x 1GB fitted).
I built my computer a couple weeks ago and am running windows 8.1. I currently have a 128gb SSD and a 1tb internal hard drive (WD Caviar Blue) I obviously used the ssd to boot windows and currently windows is detecting my 1tb hard drive but it is not usable. I have tried diskpart commands to clean and format and I keep getting the error message "DiskPart has encountered an error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error". The hard drive was brand new and cables are fine. This is what everything looks like..
I'm using Windows 8.1 now, but about a year ago, while I was still on Win7, I bought a 3TB Seagate internal hard drive. My motherboard doesn't have UEFI, so I used the DiskWizard utiiltiy from Seagate's website to make the drive look like two drives, one 2TB, the other about 800GB. Now I have my boot partition and several data partitions on the drive, and access to all 3TB of space. Works great on both Win7 and Windows 8.
I just saw an ad for a good deal on a Toshiba 3TB internal drive, but I can't find any indication that Toshiba has software that does the same thing for its drives as DiskWizard does for Seagate drives.
Is there such a utility, either from Toshiba or a third party?
Why Windows 8 did take 4.5 GB for hardware only ,,, is that too much ? My windows 8 is Single Language edition ... The original one that comes with the laptop . I tried to install Pro edition trail version it says 16 GB ( 15.5 GB Usable)
System Manufacturer/Model Number MSI GX60 1AC OS Windows 8 CPU AMD A10-4600M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics, 2300 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s) Memory 16 GB Installed Graphics Card(s) AMD Radeon HD 7660G & ATI Radeon HD 7970M
I've installed Microsoft Windows 8.1 Version 6.3.9600 Build 9600 on my HP 430 Notebook PC with 1 GB RAM and Pentium CPU @ 2GHz 2 Cores.
Display drivers are not working properly (i.e., everything appears bigger and unclear), earlier I'd successfully updated the display drivers and made it work using Device Manager. making a backup of the drivers (may be in .inf format) from the installed drivers so that I don't have to update it every time I re-install it.
I'm new to Windows 8 and I'm having a hard time managing my way around. My windows automatically installed almost all of my drivers, but failed to recognize the coprocessor. When i open the properties it says:
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.
When i try to find the driver automatically,it fails, but i cant find them aswell.
My motherboard is ASROCK 939a8x-m, therefore it has an nvidia chipset in it. I fail to find the neccessary drivers aswell and i don't know what else to do.
Is this normal? if not then how do I use ALL of the memory? It detects that I have 8gb of ram but it only uses 4gb of it. I saw that 4gb was in hardware reserve and i dunno how to allocate more memory for use...
1. BIOS is updated 2. I can only change the DRAM Frequency in the BIOS, I currently set it to 1600 in hopes of fixing it 3. Msconfig > Boot > Advanced > Maximum memory unticked 4. I have also put both sticks in slot 1 & 3 but no luck 5. Kingston HyperX Fury is not on my mobo's compatibility list 6. Regedit-> Hkey local machine->CurrentControlSet->Control->SystemResources->ReservedResources -> No Value set 7. I tried to boot my pc using each sticks themselves, still no luck but: 8. There are no programs that are hogging the ram yet 9. I have contacted the Kingston representative over at tomshardware.com 10. for more details: 8GB of ram installed but i can only use 4GB of it? - RAM - Memory
I am currently using Windows Defender in both of my home PCs. My ISP (Cablevision aka Optimum Online) now offers the full McAfee AV suite for free.
Looking at some test data, McAfee is not the greatest, but it has a better protection rates than WD. It is also said to use more system resources than other AV suites.
I've upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1 (64 bit). Everything seems to work fine except for the desktop.
If I save a file to desktop it doesn't appear on the screen when it's supposed to show 'desktop', it does though in the appropriate folder in my user profile. If I paste a file onto the screen, supposedly to desktop, and look up its properties, the location shows the document folder. Indeed, if I look at the document folder in my user profile, it is there. That is, the screen is connected to the document folder instead of the desktop folder. How to turn it to normal?
I tried to install more RAM, but after I put the sticks in, System information told me only 4GB of the 12 total GB were usable. My setup was two 2GB sticks in ports 1 and 2 and four 4GB sticks 3 and 4. I then switched it around and put the two 4GB sticks in ports 1 and 2, and the two 2GB sticks in 3 and 4. After this 8GB of the 12 were usable. Finally I tried putting the 4GB sticks in ports 1 and 3 and the 2GB sticks in ports 2 and 4 and vice versa.
I'm certain I have the right memory installed. I just noticed that Windows seems to think I only have 4GB installed (I have 8 installed). In doing some research about this, I found that maybe the BIOS needs to be updated. I don't want to update the BIOS unless necessary in order to avoid something getting messed up.
I recently bought an Acer Aspire E laptop but accidentally damaged the hard drive a few months later and had to replace it. My friend knows a lot about computers and has a side business fixing them and works as tech support for a company and for his university, so he installed the new hard drive for me and downloaded most of the drivers and installed them and said he would get the wireless working later. He eventually came back a few days ago to finish it up and after he left, I realized the wifi STILL was not working.
I have an ethernet cable and the thing it plugs into here in my dorm room, and the wifi works fine when connected to an ethernet, but Christmas break starts in a few days and I have no way to connect with my ethernet cable at home. I have my old laptop that I'm currently using but it's shitty and it doesn't turn on unless it's connected to the power cord so I can't really take it anywhere.
I've tried redownloading and installing all of the drivers myself but it doesn't do anything at all and I don't know enough about computers to figure it out. I did see that there is a yellow triangle next to the network controller driver so I'm assuming it probably has something to do with that being missing.
HP's support site for the specific model M6-1035 lists no driver for the webcam. it was there under windows 7 but I don't recall ever deliberately installing a driver for it - I assumed win7 had it.
Windows 8.1 does not. nothing in 'devices', nothing under device manager, and no driver listed on the HP support site. the latter is not surprising since they don't provide a host of drivers for the laptop.
No keyboard-specific drivers [like for the function keys etc], wrong firmware for optical, and other small things.
First of all Re-install is NO option WHATSOEVER. Because i have 500 + games installed. I have a masterbackup of it but i have 200+ new games I want to fix this installation before I do a new masterbackup.
The problem is I can't install nvidia drivers I got failed to install simple error. I think this is related to the processor /raminfo not showing in management computer and DXDIAG.
So I read around abit and it was said problem might be related to WMI? So I did all things suggested but I still get the error code 127 when trying to start WMI.
I have a problem with my usb root hub after i installed Win 8 from Win7. Only my USB 3.0 don't work anymore... I installed new driver, it detect my WD passport then 2 sec after, nothing anymore and error 19, uninstall then reinstall nothing happen.
I installed windows 8 in HDD 1tb Seagate. Then I bought Corsair 240 SSD drive and fresh installed everything there. Now if I boot from SSD drive my Seagate won't show up and I have tried other cables I have 5 hard drives in my system. It shows up in boot menu but won't show up in Disk management or anywhere else.
Then I connected it to the USP port and disk shows up no problem. I would like to leave this copy in as a backup so I don't want to delete it. I can boot into these windows but then my Corsair SSD drive won't show up. Whats up here.
My desktop computer (Win 7 Pro 32 bit) has two local printers, both with the share attribute, and is the server on a wireless LAN containing my wife's ASUS tablet (Win 8.1RT). Until recently she could print using the shared printers, but now cannot. The printer sare detected, but on trying to print, an error message says that theserver print spooler service is not running. But it definitely is - I have checked with Admin Tools, checked that it starts automatically, tried stopping and restarting it. The ASUS can still see and open shared files and folders. The printer drivers are up to date on both machines and work perfectly on the server. I am beginning to think that a Win 8 update has changed something?
Although I don't really miss the Classical start Menu any more It's quite useful to have a quick popup of some programs you use from time to time that don't always warrant being either pinned to the desktop or the taskbar also with SUB MENUS where appropriate -- All the tools like WIN-X editor that I've seen don't allow sub menuing or need fixed location toolbars or folders so here's an EASY way to do it - although it's manual so perhaps knowlegable people with some programming skills who know some scripting could easily automate the process.
An Easy way to do this actually exists in WINDOWS itself by the use of a bit of trickery and Custom toolbars -- you don't NEED any Registry hacks etc. Also you can save your created toolbar so you don't need to re-create it or go through the whole process again if you re-install Windows again either.
Taskbar - Pin or Unpin a Folder - Windows 7 Forums Toolbars - How to Use in Windows 7 and Vista - Windows 7 Forums
1) Create a Folder anywhere on your system say on Vol D: and call it My Progs.
2) Create a Custom toolbar (right mouse click on bottom taskbar==>toolbars==>new toolbar
3) Select the folder location to the one you've made D:My Progs.
Now the trick is to POPULATE this folder correctly.
For Items that don't have any sub menus - for example on my system I'll take Winamp. You need to find the FILE LOCATION - easy way to do this is to search in the applications and then RIGHT MOUSE CLICK on the .exe file and then SEND TO DESKTOP (create Short cut).
Now on the DESKTOP RIGHT MOUSE CLICK on the icon and choose COPY.
Go to your folder D:My Progs, chose Paste Short cut. Then delete the desktop icon if you don't want it on your desktop.
Now if you want SUB levels - create a Folder in the My Progs folder and then simply copy the procedure above.
You can do this for as many levels as you want.
For the TOP level items say Office Create a Folder Microsoft Office. As an example I've also added one Classic Games.
If the link is ALREADY a short cut then just past direct into the My Prog folder - you don't need to create a short cut first.
Finally re-arrange it so it appears on the screen at the most convenient place for you.
"Seemples" -- Bye Bye Startisback or any of those 3rd party apps -- I think my method is far more flexible and you can have ANY number of toolbars too.
I've shown two screen shots here with a small test toolbar - Office and Classic Games have lower levels and the other one is the example My Dir containing ONLY short cuts and folders.
Windows 8 Pro with Skype 6.3.0.107 - device manager shows no errors (webcam driver version 1.0.3.37), Skype can see the spc900nc integral mic but cannot see the webcam.
PS: For the record the win 7 compatibility report says the webcam is compatible.........
-Windows 8.1 Professional x64 -I have (2) HDD's under RAID 1 {mirrored}
After fresh install I now have the (2) HDD's shown and was was notified to install chipset driver, so I did and ended up installing the Intel Rapid Storage Technology.
Now my (2) HDD's are mirrored {combined to one drive} but the problem is I get an error about recycle bin being corrupt, delete- yes or no?.... and nothing works trying both options and the message keeps coming up.

My pc was working fine until yesterday night when july windows update was downloaded and installed.
Then when today morning i booted up my pc all my usb devices stopped working, I cannot use my mouse or keyboard when my windows is booted.
However, I am able to use my mouse and keyboard fine in UEFI bios without any issue.
I tried clearing cmos, changing ports, enable and disable legacy usb in bios, enable and disable intel xhci still my mouse and keyboard are not working when windows boots up.
I tried system restore using windows 8 cd but it ends up giving some error during restore and says unable to restore.
I am able to access my system registry and explorer using the windows 8 cd.
I used to have System Reserved on separate partion to C: but on my last fresh re-install, I decided to make C: and System Reserved in one partition. Here's what shows on Disk Management:
My question is, which is better. System Reserved on the same partition with C: or on a separate partition?
I have the laptop as stated above, i have had it a week and the user before me had decided to put on 7 instead of 8. i completely wiped and restored to windows 8.1, installed all sammy drivers and ensured it is all up to date.
the laptop had huge instability issues, the hdd was on its way out as mbr was damaged and the heads were ticking badly. then i found the ram was not secured in the sockets properly too. so i fixed it all!
Anyways back to the problem. i have the realtek hd audio drivers installed from sammy, reinstalled the ones from realtek themselves and still nothing.
Main issue, mic and speakers built in work and are fully detected. but the microphone port and headphone port are not detected, no matter what i plug into them.
I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro 64 Bit. If I go to Control Panel/Windows Update/View Update History KB2919442 is shown as installed successfully on the 12 March 2014 "BUT" if I go to Control Panel/Windows Update/Installed Updates there is no KB2919442 listed.
If I download KB2919442 directly from Microsoft and try to install it manually it says "This update is not applicable to your computer"
I'm obviously having no success trying to install KB2919355 as it never shows as available in Windows Update and if I download it manually from Microsoft and try installing manually I get the same error message "This update is not applicable to your computer"
When I got this computer, I restored my files from my Windows 7 OS to Windows 8 using my Carbonite back up. However, none of my Wordpad documents are usable now.
How do I convert my old Wordpad files to the Win 8 OS? Should I be asking the Carbonite people? Or is there a program that will do this for me?
