Which are the Ubuntu partitions?
The Ubuntu partitions are 5,6,7. What are the other partitions though? (2,3,8,10)

I just recently installed Ubuntu 13.04 in my new msi laptop. My goal is to hide Windows 8 partition in ubuntu and vice versa.
In ubuntu, I disabled auto mount so it is working as desired.
In windows 8 disk manager, I cannot seem to find a way to hide the ubuntu partitions.
My goal is to keep windows and ubuntu partions (in windows drives) to see each other to protect the parition from accidental damage.
Is there a way to this in windows 8 home edition?

I installed Ubuntu 14.04 a few weeks ago and I was happy about it, but I need to sell this PC and I need to install Windows in it. The problem here is that I erased the recovery partition by accident and I can't install Windows with a CD because my computer doesn't have a disk case, the model of my PC is Lenovo Yoga 11s.
I tried to make a booteable Windows 7 USB with Unetbootin, but the BIOS doesn't let me boot from the USB slot. My BIOS configuration was in Legacy Support and my USB was the priority to boot. My USB was formatted in NTFS. When I open the boot menu it take me to the Grub of Ubuntu.
I don't know what else to do... I just need to install Windows, it doesn't matter if is 7 or 8.

I have managed to wipe my Windows partition while installing the latest release of Ubuntu (v14.04). I've had my HDD split in two with both Windows 8 (updated to 8.1 Update) and Ubuntu and dual-booted between them for over a year.
During the Ubunut install it informed me that I had a previous version of Ubuntu and would I like to wipe the partition that it occupied and install cleanly. I chose that. It also offered a chance to use free space. Now, why I accepted that I don't know but the definition of free space seems to include any other partitions on the drive and didn't warn of this either!
The upshot is that I now have a 1TB drive with no Windows on it. I've lost all my email, pics etc etc.
I tried using my rescue DVD that I created from within Windows and at 29% I am asked to insert the second disc. I don't have a second disk. I had to force my laptop to power down in order to do anything. In order to get online I ended up installing Ubuntu again and it definitely shows no Windows partition.
I've already ordered a retail copy of Windows 8.1 and I'm hoping that I can install this with no issues on what is effectively a clean drive. Am I correct in that assumption? Is there anything else I can try that might rescue it?
I have a Dell Inspiron 17r SE that is out of warranty so no support from Dell.

I have a custom PC I built and I was running 8.1 on it. I have to drives a 120gb ssd that had windows on it and I have a 1 TB that had the 350mb system reserved partition and 2 other partitions I had for data and a boatload of free space. I wanted to try and install Linux Ubuntu on the 1tb hard drive. I did a custom install on it because I didn't want it to delete my existing partitions so in the install I made 2 partitions for Ubuntu, after I installed it my 2 data partitions are gone and I don't know what happened with the 350mb system reserved partition.
On that disk now is the 2 Linux partitions and a 150mb partition that I can't tell what it is. But now I can't boot into windows, even when I go from bios. My question is in that system reserved partition is that where the bootmgr is? Because I did nothing with the ssd where windows is and I get a no operating system error when I try to boot off it. How I can fix that disk if the system reserved partition isn't on it.

Earlier today, I decided to do a fresh install from my retail CD of Windows 8. Windows 8 was my existing OS. (I just wanted to start fresh). For some reason, it did not create the usual two additional small partitions (system reserved and one called recovery). Everything seemed to work alright, but was wondering why this happened (only the C: partition was created).

My roommate did a thorough wipe of his c drive, then installed 7 then 8.1.1. for some reason he cannot boot in to the win 7 partition. after building up and getting 8.1.1 setup just the way he wants it he doesn't care about the 7 partition any more. i know i can go in delete the 7 partition, stretch 8.1.1 to fill the entire drive, but what i'm not sure of is if the boot info is on 7 or 8.1.1. i do know that once 8.1.1 is the only os i can go into msconfig and delete the win 7 entry. note since both partitions were created using partition wizard there is not 100mb reserved partition, so the boot information is either on 7 or 8.1.1. i also have a copy of Acronis True Image 2014 Premium.

I am trying to do a clean install of windows 8 on my laptop (Elitebook 8770W) from a USB stick with original MS Windows OEM iso. Once I boot from usb stick, at the setup screen I enter the product key and then choose advanced to do a clean install. I then choose my hard disk partition to install windows but I get stuck here with this error:
"Windows cannot be installed to disk 0 partition 1"
I deleted the partition and choose to install on the unallocated space (150GIG) But still get the same error and when I click on the error this is what I get:
"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's Bios"
In bios I have my disk set as Raid and I also have a m-sata Flash cache. If I change raid to AHCI I will be able then to install windows. But if I turn it back to raid after install I will no longer be able to boot I have to be in raid mode to use my m-sat as cache drive.
So here I am stuck not being able to install windows I even downloaded latest intel rapid storage technology drivers and put them on the usb stick with windows setup files. When i got the error I choose to load driver. But even after that I was getting same error and windows would not install on my HDD.
What's the right way to install in this condition (raid)?

I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro 64 Bit. If I go to Control Panel/Windows Update/View Update History KB2919442 is shown as installed successfully on the 12 March 2014 "BUT" if I go to Control Panel/Windows Update/Installed Updates there is no KB2919442 listed.
If I download KB2919442 directly from Microsoft and try to install it manually it says "This update is not applicable to your computer"
I'm obviously having no success trying to install KB2919355 as it never shows as available in Windows Update and if I download it manually from Microsoft and try installing manually I get the same error message "This update is not applicable to your computer"

i'm using Windows 8 Home 64 Bit.
I used AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard to add a NTFS Partition to my USB drive. I want to store large files over 4GB on this partition, while having the rest of my files on the primary partition which is FAT32. The problem is, when I plug my drive into the computer it only shows the primary partition.
Is there any way to get Windows to show both partitions when I plug the device in? I want to be able to store files on both partitions.
After doing some research, I found that one possible way would be to set the USB device as a "Fixed disk". I was unable to figure out how to do this.
The device is a 32GB Silicon Power Blaze Removable Disk with USB 3.0.

I have win 8 pro installed & two HDDs with two partions each , I want to migrate the boot partition to another partition on the second drive .
It would have been easier if i would have just cloned the complete drives but one of the partions on the 2nd drive has data which cannot be deleted .
So I have Drive
1 - Partitions C: ( boot partition ) & D:
Drive 2 - Partitions E: & F:
I want to remove Drive 1 from my PC so i want to copy C: to E: then remove drive 1 & boot from E:
I tried "Easeus todo backup" , did not work, it does not make the copy bootable , to make it bootale the whole drive has to be copied .
I tried making an image of C: using Windows 8 inbuilt backup feature then removed drive 1 , installed Windows 8 on E: then tried restoring the image of C: but i got some error.

I would like to add a partition to a drive having the following partitions:
Number Partition Size 1 Windows RE 499 MB 2 EFI System 300 MB 3 MSR 128 MB 4 C: 216 GB 5 Windows RE 450 MB 6 Samsung Image 19 GB 7 Samsung Recovery 1 GB
This should be easy to do with MiniTool Partition Wizard. In essence, resize "C:", add the partition in the unallocated space, assign the drive letter "D" to the new partition, and format it to NTFS.
You will notice that the drive has two Windows RE partitions. This is because I updated to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 through the Microsoft Store.

My question is, which is better. System Reserved on the same partition with C: or on a separate partition?

I'm trying to create a virtual machine with Ubuntu in it.
I followed the instructions in this video step by step......and I have VM installed and running.
The problem comes when I try and go to the next step.
When I double click on the Ubuntu Icon in VM to start the Ubuntu install process, it should ask where the Ubuntu ISO file is, instead I get this message...
Here's my directory structure...
Virtual Box is installed in the 001 Virtual Box folder and the Ubuntu.vdi file is where you see it.
I've removed everything and repeated the process multiple times, but I always get the same result.

Suddenly, the Acronis program I used to always use for partition copy, won't detect my USB mouse and KB. So, I'm having to do it with Partition Wizard 7. I've never used that to move a system partition, are there any issues doing it that way? The only other program I used to use for this kind of Op is paragon partition manager, which the version I have is not compatible with 8.
I don't like doing it this way, it's very slow compared to using the Acronis program, which seems to fly fast.

I want to create a second primary partition on my first harddisk(disk 0 look at picture)
from the free space there in the extended partition(view screenshot). Now my problem is that whenever I want to create a new partition by right clicking and selecting "New Simple Volume" and selecting the formatting etc, I get another logical drive in the extended partition(look at picture below).
Is is not what I want. I want to move that free space out from the extended partition and add the unallocated 9 MB to it and then create a second primary partition on disk 0.
Note: If its possible I want to do this without using any third party software, IF POSSIBLE.

I'm going to do a clean install of Win 8 on my C: Drive, but how will I be able to access my Ubuntu install after I get Win 8 all set up?

I have just had limited success installing Ubuntu 12.10 onto an external diskon my new Samsung (series 3) Windows 8 laptop.
The secure boot and fast start up have been disabled.
The situation now is that Windows or Ubuntu will not boot up after pressing the power button, when doing this I get a dark screen with the following message:
error: no such device: 6dada016-95df-4ef5-a343-4a77e8afd396
grub rescue >_
I can now only boot up either program by hitting the F10 key directly afterpressing the power button, I then have to select one of the options in the boot options before themachine will boot (both systems boot up as normal when following this option).
if the external drive is not plugged into the USB port I want mylaptop to boot directly into Windows 8. Can this be achieved?. I would like to start Ubuntu through the settings, change PC settings option.

I've had this Windows 8 computer for a while and I've decided that I want to dual-OS Ubuntu 13.10, but how to partition disks or backup system images or anything like that. I'm not even sure how to check what kind of ASUS my laptop is, but I'm fairly certain it is compatible with Ubuntu. If I can, I'd like to avoid using external hard-drives and CD's because I don't have easy access to either.

And I would like to know how can I switch from Ubuntu to Windows without using DVD / USB?
P.S. The laptop is Toshiba Satellite A300 PSAG0E.
