I actually have no problem with the Win 8.1 Start menu, but the colors of the regular desktop environment are killing me. Namely, the weird, off-off white of the menus. The High-Contrast White option under Personalization gives me the right color for the menu backgrounds but everything else about the theme screams windows 3.1, so I'd rather not resort to using that.
Is there maybe a registry tweak that I can use to change this one little color? I've tried a few things but nothing so far has worked.
See attached pic to see what I'm talking about.
I would like to know how I can change the color of ProgressBar? I tested the same as windows 7 and patching .dll but it will not work.
I have seen "themes" where the ProgressBar is blue on Deviant Art
1-the color of task bar and the borders of the windows is red , how can i change it to default of win 8 or other colors?
2-when we go to the search in the charms bar we see the picture below
is there a way to add our favourite programs(.exe files) to this part?

How do I change the background color of this screen?
Right now the color (white) blends in way too much with everything else on the page, so that it is very difficult to even see the category titles.

I tried fiddling with colors here, but no luck:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Control Panel > Colors
HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Control Panel > Desktop Colors
how to change my account type back to administrator but with no luck.
I have been running this laptop as my main machine for a few months now with no problems, however, I realised I had a problem when I wanted to change some networking settings on Friday when the UAC said I needed admin privileges and wouldn't let me enter a password or click "Yes", hence not allowing me to go any further.
I went to control panel > User accounts and saw my account type has been changed to Guest.
Now I have thought long and hard and I have not changed or had any need to change my account type to guest, nor has anyone else had access to my laptop, so I can only assume this has been done in the last week or so during a Windows update.
I'll tell you what I did to try to resolve this below:
First of all I tried to enable the hidden administrator account while in my account by running command prompt as admin (and then entering net user Administrator /active:yes) but as I don't have admin privileges I couldn't even open the command prompt so I couldn't get any further.
After reading around the net and this forum I found this thread and gave it a try. After restarting the laptop and booting into safe mode I was expecting to see and Administrator account next to my account at the log in screen, however, there was only the administrator account to choose from, so I clicked it and it went through the first time initialisation of the account and then showed me the start menu, I then went to run the command prompt as admin and it worked, I entered net user Administrator /active:yes which worked with no problems. I then went to the user accounts in control panel to "Manage other accounts" but my usual account was nowhere to be found. So I thought I'd restart the laptop and see what happens out of safe mode.
When it restarted I was still only presented with the admin account, so I logged in to disable the hidden by entering net user Administrator /active:no in the command prompt run as admin and then restarted.
After restarting again I was expecting to see my account but was still presented with only the admin account, but when I clicked on it it said it was disabled and I was completely locked out of windows.
Luckily I created a restore point so I managed to restore my settings, and was back at square one.
After a bit of testing it seems my main user account is being removed when I enter safe mode, but do nothing else. Why entering safe mode is removing my account.
I am at a bit of a loss as I can't seem to activate admin privileges on my account, but if i try to fix it I lose my account completely.
I have two monitors. The desktop is always showing on the second monitor. If I have the start screen on the main monitor and click on the desktop on the second monitor, the main monitor switches to desktop. Is there anyway to keep the start screen on the main monitor in this situation?

The Windows 8 came with the laptop. The only reason I am interested in Windows 8 is bitlocker. That is probably the only feature I am interested in.
This the error message I get : Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and the click "next".
3.Click "repair your computer".
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

I have tried all the recovery options using windows 8 iso DVD - none worked
Also I did create "Windows 8 Repair Disc at the time When I upgraded from Windows 7. I tried it too - with no result.
Note: I upgraded using windows assistant.
So with windows 8 I have it currently where it uses my Hotmail email address.
Is there any way to over ride it so I can use another password without needing to change the password on my Hotmail email account?
I'd prefer to use a custom password?
Are there any alternative ways to still keep a password in place but not use the same password as my email?
i am running windows 8 on my Toshiba Satellite L 300 , it was running smoothly and all its features are good too. but suddenly the screen turns out a solid color based on the color which was on desktop ( for example if i am having a yellowish theme, the solid color will be yellow ) .. i have seen a lot white and light yellow color the most when the screen change . after the color change the total system will be unresponsive, the only way i find is to press the power button for 2 seconds, ( ya full power off ) ... again if i start the system, may be it will work perfectly for a long time but suddenly again it happened..
the problem start before two weeks, i thought it may be due to some software error and i done a full system reboot and i don't have any program installed except windows 8, but still it exists. .. now i am sure that problem is somewhere in windows OS or my hardware ... i am unable to find whats going on ..
is it possible to change the start menu's font size and/or tile size without impacting the desktop's icon and text size? from what i can tell the "make text and other items larger/smaller" is global, i.e. it can't be used independently in terms of the start menu and desktop...

Even when I have told Windows 7 to install it on the ssd. Does Windows 8 fix and address this issue? Or will I have to only have my ssd plugged in when installing Windows 8? Then once installed. View 1 Replies View RelatedWhat is the effect of setting a display as "Main display"?
My expectation is that in a multiple monitor setting, the upper most left hand corner of your "desktop" should be shown by windows on the display marked as "main". Is that wrong?
My problem scenario is that I dock and undock my Surface Pro 3 regularly (I assume this is a WIndows 8.1 question and is not specific to the Surface) and my desktop icons are not always going where I expect them to go.
Sometimes when I dock, my icons are shown on the 2nd monitor (which I have designated as my 'main display'), which is what I expect. But other times when I dock, they are shown on the Surface screen instead, which is a pain..
Sometimes when I undock, the icons are shown on the Surface screen and sometimes there are no icons shown at all on the Surface.. but if I play around with the options to "extend" a monitor or a projector (even though I don't have one hooked up) I can get the icons to appear on the Surface, although they are not lined up like I left them and I have to re-arrange them.
It almost seems to me that the o/s is sometimes not honoring the "main display", or its getting confused. Another small case in point is that, right now, I'm docked and my desktop icons are being shown on the surface, although my 2nd monitor is designated as "main". If I go into the settings and make the surface pro the "main" display, the icons get moved over to the 2nd monitor!
Is there any way to disable scrolling on the start screen or change the tile scaling by a small amount? I've got a 1680x1050 monitor and when there's 10 medium sized tiles across the screen, it activates the scroll bar, but there's no need for the scroll bar as all the tiles fit on the screen fine and scrolling only shifts them by a few pixels.
How to change the number of rows and a scaling tool that didn't work.
I installed Windows 8.1 , there has been this very strange problem with Windows Media Player where it displays every video which is highly saturated or we can say that it appears very odd. Whereas in the case of VLC, it displays the video appropriately. I have attached the screenshots below. I checked every setting of the Windows Media Player and it is at it's default setting.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm having a hard time trying to create a partition on the main HDD, in order to perform a Windows 7 installation, since Windows 8 is giving me several compatibility problems, and many software developers (e.g. Adobe Systems) said to me that Windows 8 support is not available since it isn't officialy released yet.
According to Windows 8 "Computer Management" utility (very similar to the Win7 one) the maximum size of available shrink space is up to 86 GB. Nevertheless I desire to create at least a 250 GB partition (HD is 1.5 TB and free space is 620 GB).
I found out on the internet this could be due to MFT files. I followed an old guide, run the Disk Cleanup Wizard, disabled system restore, the pagefile, the kernel memory dump and the hibernation mode. I morover run several instances of 3rd party defrag softwares such as Perfect Disk: I run the SmartPlacement, the defrag, the consolidate free space and the Prep for shrink tools, none of them with a positive result.
Though MFT files seems to be at a right place, around 5 GB from the disk beginning.
As you see my drive when have a little space , becomes red, how can i disable it?

View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen using a screensaver that is suppose to have a transparent background (be able to see what is on the desktop) it defaults to the background color chosen for the start screen theme.
An easy example is the bubbles screensaver that comes preloaded, the weird thing is when selected and you preview it, it previews with a transparent background you are able to see what is on your desktop, but when you let it run its time and it pops up on its own it replaces the background with the color theme you chose for your start screen.
How to change it to remain transparent? I've tried changing the background color of the start screen to transparent with Decor8 but the screensaver background still is not transparent.
Attached are the images of how it should look and how it actually looks.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been having an ongoing issue with Windows 8.1 since I upgraded a few months back.
It's hard to explain but I'll try. Occasionally, say maybe every 20 minutes (have not timed it to see if it's consistent or not), I am working on the desktop and the whole screen will go purple (that's the theme color I chose) for a couple seconds, then when it comes back, my desktop shortcuts are moved to the middle of the screen. It's a bit infuriating as I use my shortcuts (folders, files, programs) quite a bit and would like them to stay where they are.

My Yoga 2 13 has a slight green tint to yellow. So I tried to do a color calibration. I decreased the amount of green with the slider. But, when I checked the yellow color, it looked the same. So, I went back to the color calibration and the slider was back at full scale. I tried several times and always get the same result. The slider always gets set back to full scale.
View 7 Replies View Related(Word 2010) I found at least half a dozen methods on the Microsoft Forums for changing Word's "Normal Template" and making the changes permanent. It works for the font and margins, but not for the background color. In fact, when I open a new document and go to "Page Layout > Page Color" it shows that the color I want is already selected, and yet the background of the document is still white!
