Hardware Drivers :: C Drive Losing Memory - 70% Used Up
Aug 25, 2013
I have a question about my C drive.
I started noticing about a week ago that I was slowly losing memory in my C drive without me using it. In other words, it is disappearing. I have seen this before on several windows 7 computers, but I don't know how to solve this problem when I'm running windows 8. (I'm running it on a 128 GB SSD HP spectre.) A few days ago I had 4.79 GB free. Yesterday I had 4.67 GB free. This morning I have 4.66 GB free. All this while I have not saved anything onto my computer, installed any updates, etc.
Furthermore, when I purchased this computer a year ago, it already came with about 70% of the C drive used up. I assumed it was bloatware that was taking up the space and have since given up on removing it, but I'm growing suspicious that it has something to do with the disappearing memory.
I'm about a year into windows 8, which came pre installed on a Lenovo C440, 64 bit, 1 terrabite HD partitioned into C,467 GB,E,storage 437 GB. I updated to 8.1 a few weeks ago and aside from the 'feeling' that everything is running a bit slow all else seems fine except: ever since I got 8 I've been losing space on C drive, about a GB or 2 a week somewhere I got hint to go to System, delete all restore points and then create a new restore point.
I'd do this whenever I'd be down 4/5 gigs and get all the lost space back. Since I went to 8.1 I'm losing a gig or more a day, and it doesn't come back after the delete restore process. I use CC cleaner daily and remove everything but cookies ( way too much trouble to have to log in again at every site I go to).
I don't hibernate, just sleep I auto defrag once a week I have Trend Micro do a full scan nightly I still have plenty of space but I've lost about 9 GB in 3 weeks of 8.1
I can install and use any of two bluetooth mice (Dell PU705 Travel mouse or Samsung S Action mouse ET-MP900D) on my Lenovo Ideapad Z710 laptop. This works fine with either mouse for an average of 20 minutes (varies) then it loses contact with the laptop and its back to using the touchpad. When I go to the Bluetooth settings page -- "Manage Bluetooth Devices", the control suddenly reappears on entering the page with no further action from me. The recovery of the device like this happens on no other page, to my knowledge. I have a phone and a tablet paired with the laptop on bluetooth and they stay paired. I have installed the latest Lenovo bluetooth drivers with no improvement. It appears that the mice are still connected but not responding to the laptop until they get a small 'kick' when I return to the Bluetooth settings page. New, full strength batteries are installed.
Yesterday I try to move memory from the D: drive to the main C: drive.. I use windows 8 and i try to do it with the partition of windows 8 (win tab +R). Then I shrink the space of the D drive and cant move it to the C drive so finally i just take the shrinking memory and make new drive F.. When I turn on the computer today i find this error:"operating system wasn't found. try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system". I don't know what to do..
I have Windows 8.1 32-bit installed and have fitted my PC (Dell Inspiron 531) with 4GB RAM.
The system only reports 3.25gb as usable - where has the remainder gone?
Is it the Graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT)?
I understand that Windows 8.1 32-bit can utilise a full 4GB of RAM?
Also in the Task Manager, it reports that I have used "2 of 2 slots", however I have 4 RAM slots inside the machine where the RAM is fitted (4 x 1GB fitted).
My Q200E Asus laptop came with 4g of memory. I would like to add another 4g's to bring it up to 8g's. I can find no instructions for doing this and am not entirely sure if it can be done. I have removed the back cover and see no memory sticks at all.
Just upgraded to Win 8.1 Pro from Win 8 on a Dell Latitude E6530. Everything was working fine; post upgrade, system does not recognize any of my SD cards upon insertion. [Don't even see a drive letter show up.] All other peripheral storage devices are fine.
I'm booting off my SSD which is drive C: and I have games and programs on an extra hard drive which was origanally drive H: but after a restart it switched to I: and when I go into Disk Management to change it Drive H: isn't there.
When I go to Computer Management my main (OS) drive shows as "Disk 1" and my 2nd internal data drive shows as "Disk 0". Should I switch the SATA cables so that the main drive will show as "Disk 0 and the 2nd internal drive as "Disk 1"?
I used HP Pavilion G4-2216TU, 2Gb DDR3 RAM, Intel HD 4000, and Windows 8 Pro 32 bit, x64 processor.
The usable memory only 935 Mb, fewer than hardware-reserved that take 1,1 Gb of memory.
Is that normal ? that hardware-reserved took more memory rather than usable?
I've check the BIOS, no remapping setting that I can use for. can I remapping / reduce those hardware-reserved usage in such other way ?or how can i increase my usable memory close to installed RAM ?
I've not done any change or upgrade since I bought that new laptop, and its seem memory-load is too busy (I've check with the performance-monitor).
How can I edit (.png) photo without losing transparency with Microsoft paint on win8pro? Any program for editing png photo without losing transparency...
want to upgrade from windows 7 ultimate 32 bit to windows 8 64 bit. I'm not sure about this, as I'm afraid I'll lose my game collection. I have some Games and MMOs, on local disk D. I keep all my programs and windows files on disk C. I'm OK with losing my programs, I have backup DVDs for all of them, but Games.. my internet is slow, so redownloading them will take weeks, if not months. I could back em up on my relative's HDD, but I want to know if that will be necessary.
I support an older piece of software(vb) and am running into a lot of issues on windows 8 not seen on windows 7.
Our software installs some setting etc hkeylocalmachine >software>wow3264>our program>folders etc>>>
One of the issues is some machines seem to randomly lose their data values or revert to an older value(for example a data folder will switch from the network to the default location. Another example is a license code being deemed expired. Often a perfectly valid license will no longer be valid. The user is prompted to enter a code. If I enter a new code it still says expired. The fix ive used which is annoying is running the program as admin and applying the license code- Normally if the user then opens the program as the user after this it will work but they will again lose the value.
Always running as admin is not really a fix because then user cant see their printers or mapped drives in windows 8. And that is something I am not really supposed to support too often. They don't want me to be their tech support.
how this is happening, is it UAC? My guess is when the user installs it asks for admin, the users clicks ok and it installs. But then I dont understand why it works for a while and then quits.
I have brought a Dell Inspiron 17R SE. It came with a 1.5TB HDD With a rotating speed of 5400 RPM. As the day is passing the Laptop is becoming slow and slower. So I have thought to buy a Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSD and install it along with my HDD. So my question is that is there any way to move all the files from my C: drive to that SSD and make that SSD as boot drive without losing all my files. Then my 1.5 TB HDD would be my data storing drive.

Lets say I open up lets say 'Window A' whether it be Firefox or a my documents window.
I then open up another 'Window B ' on top of Window A. When I close 'Window B', 'Window A' has lost its focus and I need to click back on it somewhere to regain it.
Every hour on the hour, I lose the Internet connection with the follow error sequence:
The Base Filtering Engine service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 2 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 300000 milliseconds: Restart the service. The Diagnostic Policy Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 2 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 300000 milliseconds: Restart the service. The Windows Firewall service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 2 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 300000 milliseconds: Restart the service. The Network Connected Devices Auto-Setup service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 2 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 300000 milliseconds: Restart the service. Eventually (300000 msecs later), it usually restarts (but not always - I need to do a reboot).

My laptop keeps losing internet connection. It appears to remain connected to the router but not have actual internet connection. I have pinged the router thousands of times and have no packet loss so I don't suspect that is the problem. I've tried the internet connection on a computer running Windows XP, one running Windows 7, and one running Mac OS X and none of them have trouble staying connected, so it appears to be a problem only with this laptop.
When I am using hdmi as the single display, I am losing wireless when the lid is closed. Closing the lid is arranged to "do nothing" on both battery and plug. Wireless becomes:
- Not able to see any wireless networks except the only one chosen as " automatically connect" and it cannot connect to that either.
I got so upset, changed a few settings in adapter settings, messed stuff up, so had to install the OS again.
Is that something normal that wireless acts up when the lid is closed on hdmi display? It never did this without the hdmi.
I am having an issue with my Windows 8.1 Desktop (win 8.1 Pro with Media Center 64 bit) in that it is losing the IP address several times a day, which stops any browser from working. I fix this by entering "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" at the cmd prompt & restarting, but this is only temporary. For the past couple of days this has been occurring at 9am and 9pm. but for the prior week or so it was 12am or 6am. I can't work out what is causing this. This behavior began on 2/2 but no updates were done on that date. In the event log I find 4 event corresponding to the times I mention:
Error Service Control Manager The Base Filtering Engine service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 3 time(s).
Error Service Control Manager The Diagnostic Policy Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 3 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 120000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

I have done a full scan with Trend Micro but no virus or malware is detected.
My new laptop will randomly disconnect from the internet but still remain connected to my wireless network. I've unchecked the box allowing the wireless card to be powered down, I've done ipconfig release and renew, and I've checked my drivers but none of it has fixed the issue.
The os that i have in my laptop is windows 8. Any time I put on the computer a message pop up that new update of 8.1 is available. Really I want to update to 8.1 but i don't want to loss my files and other programs installed. will it be possible to update it without losing my all ready installed programs?
what is the best way to install a clean version windows 8 pro without losing my files, data and programs. I want to do that because my windows 8 became so slow and takes very long time to respond. whatsoever program or browser I open, takes some time ranging 30 sec to 5 minutes!! This thing never happened before as now I get not responding message on the window of each program...
I got an HP laptop last year pre-installed with Windows 8 and I want to install a new HDD. How do I go about doing this and not losing any files? So far all I know to do is to create a system disc from the recovery manager, and then a recovery file on an external drive. Does this cover personal files or do I need to back those up separately?
I've just upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 8 on a Dell Latitude D820, which went fine. But, after installing a new driver for the video card (Quadro NVS 120M), the Start Screen is not working anymore. As soon the mouse touches a tile, they all disappear and I'm left with only the background image.
I can go to the desktop by hitting Win+D and if I hit the Win key after some minutes the tiles are there again only to disappear as soon the mouse pointer touches them.
I've also discovered that I lose my right click capability until i log out/log back in.
I JUST bought my laptop three weeks ago. Two weeks ago, I started having issues where I would constantly lose my Internet connection (wifi). This is not happening with any other devices in my home, including my IPad and son's laptop. Now it's not recognizing Internet connections at all. Acer wants to charge me, says it a software issue, not hardware. It's an Acer Aspire V5-571P.
I have had a Dell Inspiron 3520 for 3 weeks now. It has had 2 Windows Updates in that time. Both times I lost Internet connection and any way of connecting. The connection bar for the wi-fi was on, connection good but no Internet. After a lot of chat with Dell I did a System restore to Factory settings the first time (16 days ago). I also did a restore point once I'd re-set everything up again.
2 days ago the same thing happened after a Windows update and I also could not locate the restore point so it was back to Factory settings.
2 out of 3 USBs worked on Win 7 on same PC but wont after installing Win 8.
They all work no problem on my netbook with Win 7 installed. Here is the pic about problem: [URL] ....
As you can see, they wont show up but they are recognized...:/
I tried reformatting them on netbook, still nothing. And tried allocating them drive letters and formatting them but error shown in pic above pops up ....
Out of those 3 USBs 2 are the same (same model)! But 1 works and other doesn't...
I have recently upgraded hardware on my desktop. The major change is that I installed a new Solid State Drive as my drive C:. I think I also read somewhere that these drives "don't like" being written on too much and that one needs to enable/disable certain OS features for such drives.
So I checked the properties for the drive C in Windows 8 and here's what I got:
As you see "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties" is checked.
Does it need to be checked for that drive?
And also, is there anything else that I need to change in the settings to accommodate for the SSD?
