Fans Running High Inside Laptop
Jan 11, 2014
I purchased my HP laptop back in 2009. It came installed with Windows 7. It has an Intel quad-core processor and 8 gigs of RAM. I upgraded to Windows 8.1, and since then my laptop's fan has been running high and hot constantly. It did not behave this way before I upgraded the OS. The fan usually acts up when I have 2 or more things running on the laptop.

I'm running into a really annoying issue after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8.
I first noticed it during the initial (clean) install; when the installer tried to reboot, my machine (an acer aspire 4755G) just hung after the initial shutdown. That is, after the screen turns off, the power lights and fans are still running, and the machine itself doesn't restart. (I let it sit for a good 15 minutes, and it still didn't change).
I managed to do a hard reset (power button for 5 seconds) and the install finished, but every shutdown/restart has been like that. Interestingly enough, hibernate works just fine.
I've looked at other solutions where it said to use the "bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes" command, and that didn't work.
I also turned off the "Fast Boot" option in the power settings menu. That didn't work either. So far, the only option is to do the hard shut down by holding down the power button, but that proves to be horribly inconvenient.
I've also updated all my drivers to the proprietary onces given by Acer, yet this problem still persists! It worked fine on Windows 7, so I'm not sure what went wrong here.

I've been backing up "My Documents" with CDBurnerXP because
1. I consider Windows Backups to be opaque and I prefer to keep them simple and to know what is going on
2. Windows Backups does some things I believe are risky so I will not use it
3. Windows 7 had a deep directory structure problem and I presume Windows 8 continues to
4. It's ridiculous to backup "Windows" when I really only care about the safety of my data and since I am a slow typist who can't type at 3 Gigahertz it seems unlikely that I will ever have produced enough data that won't fit in one piece of optical media
5. I prefer to use a backup medium that has no moving parts and no firmware and humidity and mechanical shock resistant and contains no software and nothing vendor specific and blank DVDs are one such medium
6. I don't understand how a "backup DVD" can get scratched if there are never children and animals in the building (movie DVDs are a different matter)
Unfortunately, I can't continue down this route because my Windows 8 is now inside VirtualBox and I can't seem to make CDBurnerXP and Windows 8 recognize a blank DVD as a suitable target for a backup.
I am looking for DVD burning software that is free and is known to work inside VirtualBox.

I'm getting this random clicking sound(more of a tick-tock-ish) that's coming from within my system. I'm not sure where but it's adequately loud for me to notice. It just goes 2 clicks(tick-1 tick-2) then goes away. It doesn't have a specific time frame, like it doesn't happen every how many minutes or so.
I actually wasn't worried until I've read some sites that it could be a start of a so to be hdd failure. If it is, is there any way I could fix it? Or at least how long do I have before it goes total bye-bye on me?
I've attached a .wav file of the sound being recorded from my mobile phone.

A month ago or so I made a copy of the recovery partition using the Windows option to create recovery unit, and when it finished I chose the option to delete recovery partition from the internal hard drive.
A new 25 GB hard drive appeared, everything was fine.
Now I would like to sell this laptop but I don't know how to put the recovery partition back in its place or if it's even possible.
I know the backup it's complete because the data size t's the same and when i tried it, the restore was from the scratch, even with the sony wizard before the windows configuration.

I recently got a new laptop, first thing I did was delete most bloatware and such, and there really isn't a whole lot remaining other then OS and drivers. However, when checking the taskmanager recently I noticed it using 80-90% of the RAM. While being under very little use. Only thing was chrome taking up 200-300MB.
The laptop is a samsung 9 series, with 8 GB RAM, so I can't see how it should be having so much troubles when just running on lowgear. I checked and it does have 8GB RAM registered, and the performance view shows it using 6GB of 7,6. Considering there are plenty of windows 8s laptops with just 4GB I couldn't imagine this being normal?
Adding together what is shown by the task manager wont get me higher then 1 GB at most as far as RAM usage, is there any tool giving better information about what is all used? Could it be the quickboot system of samsung that eats up some or some sort of reserve that will let go of some RAM if other programs demand it?

I am running Windows 8.1 preview and whenever I play certain games my monitor locks up and my GPU fans stop and the only way for it to work is by restarting my PC. I don't think my card is defective because I was able to run the game once until it crashed. I am running on 32 bit if that makes any difference. And I don't believe it overheats because I keep MSI Afterburner running the whole time. This also happened on Windows 7 32 bit.

Today I got an IO error when trying to upload a song to a music site. After doing research it said to run a test on command. Once I restarted my laptop it stated scanning and tunnibg. My computer went to safe mode but would not come out if it. I had no choice but to press down the power button. I tied it back on and it ran again. After 10mintues it went to 27% and stayed there for an hour. Now it went to sleep mode again. I don't know what yo do. I can't stare at the computer for ever to keep it from not going to sleep mode. My laptop is a year old and is an HP.

I have a asus k53s that i recently upgrade to Windows 8 (from w7). Sometimes when i leave the laptop on but don't use it(idle), the fan will be constantly on even if its not doing anything like running a virus scan, and the screen will also shutdown going completly black. I can't move the mouse or press keys to "wake" the computer and i have to reboot the computer by pressing the power button.
.I have everything updated with the latest drivers, so i really don't understand the reason for this.

I just totally lost the sound of my laptop running on Windows 8. It was okay yesterday and the only thing I did today was checked my email and noticed I kept getting full page of junk ads like your software is outdated, need to update whatever... etc. etc. I ran malwarebytes and avg and found nothing. I ran these also yesterday. Checked my connections ok, and volume not muted.... Where did the sound go? My laptop is only 6 months old.....

I have a Lenovo laptop running Windows 8.1. I run a number of VB6 programs. One is an estimating system that makes use of .dat files. When I first install the program and the files, everything works fine.
The problem comes when I 'over-write' a .dat file with a newer version, with some basic cost changes (the file updated on a different computer which contains VB6). As I 'paste' from a USB stick it asks if I want to over-write, which I obviously agree to.
However, as I run the program, I still appear to be using data from the previous file! The latest update figures are ignored.
To check this out further, I have even deleted (removed completely) the .dat file from the appropriate directory, but when running the program it still inputs data from the original file.
This leads me to believe there must be another copy of the file open somewhere (hence the phantom!), possibly as a 'last used' reference.
I have been on to the taskbar and ensured I have unchecked the two boxes about retaining files etc.

I've got a new Windows 8.1 laptop, and I've been installing the usual suspects. Most of these work, but I have had trouble with two:
dropboxinstaller.exe
chromesetup.exe
With both of these, upon running I don't even get the warning asking whether I want to allow the file to modify my computer. All that happens is that the cursor flicks to the "waiting" blue circle for a second or two, then... nothing.

I have a Dell laptop running Windows 8. It is 3 months old.
I have lost my admin rights to the computer - I cannot make changes. Therefore, I cannot do a system restore.
I tried booting up in safe mode and turning on the admin rights via command prompt and typing "net user administrator /active:yes". It tell me 'access is denied'. I think it said "error code 5".
It may or may not be coincidence but I had installed Classic Shell a week before this problem occurred.

I'm having trouble keeping my lenovo laptop (running windows 8) connected to the internet. I have been able to connect successfully to multiple wireless networks and access the internet until I tried to connect to the new network.
Initially everything is OK - I can connect to the network and access the internet. However after a short period of time (anywhere from a few seconds to 20 minutes) the network connection will change to limited, without internet access. If I simply disconnect and reconnect to the network the internet will immediately be working again (at least for a few seconds/minutes).
Alternatively, if I run the troubleshooter, I always get the message that the default gateway is not available, which has been fixed by resetting the wi-fi adapter.

A couple of days ago, my HP Pavilion g7-2233cl laptop, running Windows 8, started looping at startup. I shot a brief video showing a few loops and posted it on YouTube: [URL] ....
Because of the looping, I am unable to input any commands through my keyboard or mouse once the looping starts. So, for example, I cannot get to Control Panel.
I was, however, able to click on Escape during a startup and run a hardware diagnostic. No hardware problems were found.
Sometimes, after looping for quite a while, the computer freezes up. It stops looping but then won't let me do anything else either.
This problem does NOT seem the same as the "Automatic Repair" issue I have seen described on YouTube. By the way, I also have Windows 8 running on a desktop computer.

I'd like to upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 Pro. This will be run as a guest on VirtualBox 4.3.2 (the newest as of November 2013) on Ubuntu 12.04 (April 2012) with weekly updates.
In Windows Store, an attempt to upgrade fails because, it indicates that Windows 8.1 is "not supported by your CPU". This is a doubtful explanation because it runs Windows 8 fine. The CPU is an Intel i7 - 2670 QM that was released in Q4 2011 in a unit that retailed in June 2012. VirtualBox has WDDM and 3D acceleration since at least VirtualBox 4.1 which was released more than a year ago. I run with VirtualBox's display 2D acceleration ON, and previously with 3D acceleration OFF because I've had problems. However, 3D acceleration is presently ON. Regardless, Windows 8.1 will not install either way.
This is what Microsoft indicates under "more information" about Win 8.1.
Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2 (more info)RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver
I note that Windows 8 also requires PAE, NX, and SSE2 so that should not be the problem. I have allocated 4 GB RAM and about 500 GB disk, which are both more than adequate.
Edit: I use a 64 bit machine with 64 bit Linux and 64 bit Windows. Edit: Although I tried to install Windows 8.1 with 3D acceleration ON, I generally keep it OFF because it can result in a crash of my .NET application that uses a XAML window. It's not a bug that I care enough about to fix.
How do I fix this Windows 8.1 installation problem?

I have a Toshiba laptop running windows 8.1 and the issue that Im facing is that suddenly sound stops working, most likely when playing youtube videos. This is what I've done so far:
Reinstalling drivers (microsoft, realtek, conexant)
Upgraded to 8.1 (I had this issue as after a few weeks I installed windows 8, never happened on 7)
HDMI and headphones outputs are working just fine.
When I was on windows 8 I could make the speakers work by just clicking on disable and re-enable from the sound properties, If I disabled the microphone the speakers started to work again which I have no idea why that used to happen. Now on 8.1 the only way to make them work is by closing the lid or restarting the laptop which is pretty annoying.
These are the current (default settings) I have played with them but nothing fix the issue.

Strange problem I am having with my windows 8.
I have an ASUS laptop running 8.0 which I am running with a second screen (dell monitor) connected via VGA. I have it set so the external monitor is the primary screen and the laptop is the secondary screen. It is set for a taskbar on each display, with the primary taskbar containing the shortcuts on the monitor, so when I click them they open there. It's been working fine for months.
So I switched it on today and my taskbar shortcuts have jumped to the taskbar on the second (laptop) screen, however my external display is still set as the primary and still has my desktop icons, trashcan etc but a blank taskbar (like the one that used to be on the secondary display)! When I click the shortcuts which are now on the taskbar of the laptop screen they open on the monitor. (ie the wrong screen) I disconnected the monitor, turned off the extended desktop and set it to just use the laptop screen. All my desktop icons moved to the laptop screen but the taskbar shortcuts vanished and I was left with a blank taskbar. If I plug the monitor in again and extend the desktop they reappear, but on the wrong screen. Even if I reboot without the external screen connected I get no shortcuts until I plug in the monitor and set it to extend the desktop. I have checked all the taskbar settings and they are all correct.

First let me say, I rarely leave my 8.1 system running all night as I generally switch off before bed.
On the FEW occasions I leave the system running all night I always get the "Your computer is low on memory" warning.
For instance, yesterday my software RAID mirror was "Re-synchronizing" and I wanted it to complete syncing so I left it running. NOTHING was running except Disk Manager. I closed down everything else. No browser, no Skype, no directory utility, no paint, no uTorrent....
Sure enough when I woke up this morning there it was....
A few days ago I wanted a couple of torrents to keep downloading so I kept the desktop running. Again NOTHING else was running and in the morning there it was....
I have 16Gb of memory and my pagefile.sys is 42Gb. My OS disc is a 250Gb SSD. I have set my system to hibernate after 5 hours idle. I have set the screen/display to sleep after 30 minutes.
The system isn't asleep when I wake as moving the mouse immediately brings the display back on line. Checking Task Manager shows NO memory hogs.
What I suspect is after 5 hours the hibernation process denies access to memory requests or something?
The strange thing is millions of people on 8.1 must leave their systems running all night but I have seen no mention of this behaviour.

I have an old computer that I've repurposed as a file server for all the other machines on my network, and one of the things I do with it is to put various program installer files on it, so I can install them to the other machines without having to download the same file over and over. However, when accessing these remote files from any machine except those still running XP, I get an extra warning box telling me that the file "is in a location outside your local network." It's not, but for some reason, these machines think it is. I've Googled various fragments of text from these warning boxes (each Windows version has slightly different wording for this warning; the screen shot I've attached is from the Win7 machine I happen to be on right now), but no matter which variant I search for, everything I find about getting rid of this warning is either geared toward similar warnings given by MS Access for remote databases, or for marking external Web sites as trusted.
How do I tell Windows that this local file server is in fact local and not in need of these repetitive and annoying warnings?
