Apr 29, 2013I've been backing up "My Documents" with CDBurnerXP because
1. I consider Windows Backups to be opaque and I prefer to keep them simple and to know what is going on
2. Windows Backups does some things I believe are risky so I will not use it
3. Windows 7 had a deep directory structure problem and I presume Windows 8 continues to
4. It's ridiculous to backup "Windows" when I really only care about the safety of my data and since I am a slow typist who can't type at 3 Gigahertz it seems unlikely that I will ever have produced enough data that won't fit in one piece of optical media
5. I prefer to use a backup medium that has no moving parts and no firmware and humidity and mechanical shock resistant and contains no software and nothing vendor specific and blank DVDs are one such medium
6. I don't understand how a "backup DVD" can get scratched if there are never children and animals in the building (movie DVDs are a different matter)
Unfortunately, I can't continue down this route because my Windows 8 is now inside VirtualBox and I can't seem to make CDBurnerXP and Windows 8 recognize a blank DVD as a suitable target for a backup.
I am looking for DVD burning software that is free and is known to work inside VirtualBox.

Sep 15, 2014I'm trying to get my existing installation of windows to boot as an external hard drive. I had it installed on an internal drive, then removed the hard drive and put it in an external enclosure. Then trying to boot off the drive results in windows loading the recovery screen and giving me a bunch of options. The only thing I can do is restart the computer with all the other options (refresh, reinstall) saying that the drive is locked. Putting the drive back into the computer will allow me to boot normally from it, but I want to be able to boot from it via USB 3.
What can I do to either create a fresh install of windows on this drive that can be booted by usb or migrate/modify my existing installation to work.

Put Windows 8 Recovery Inside Laptop Hard Drive - Sony Vaio
Mar 2, 2014A month ago or so I made a copy of the recovery partition using the Windows option to create recovery unit, and when it finished I chose the option to delete recovery partition from the internal hard drive.
A new 25 GB hard drive appeared, everything was fine.
Now I would like to sell this laptop but I don't know how to put the recovery partition back in its place or if it's even possible.
I know the backup it's complete because the data size t's the same and when i tried it, the restore was from the scratch, even with the sony wizard before the windows configuration.

Apr 26, 2014I already have a Windows 8 Pro USB installer setup but I don't think it can be used to do a repair install for my Windows 8.1 Pro upgrade. So I'm trying to create a new USB installer setup specifically for Win 8.1 Pro. However, the Windows 8.1 setup window is not accepting the 8.1 Product Key that I extracted from Belarc, ProduKey and WPkey. Is there a way to get around that issue so that I can create the Win 8.1 USB installer?

Feb 12, 2014 Goal: run both windows 7 and windows 8.1 native from VHDX (currently only success with Windows 8.1 on vhdx and win7 vhd)
I have a windows 8.1 installed in the system and rebooted into a command prompt, created a vhdx image, converted to GPT, and then install windows 7 on this vhdx (both with and without KB982018 integrated). The install went through (copying files etc) and it then rebooted itself and finish off the reset of the installation. After it rebooted it the boot menu is the old style black and white (which is fine), and choose win7 vhdx to finish off the installation. However an error comes up - An unexpected error has occurred.
Having no luck therefore instead of installing to a VHDX I now boot up with the win7SP1 USB and install onto a VHD instead. Everything went well and booted into windows 7 (expected). I then install KB980218 and then it rebooted itself, again everything is ok. I then booted back into windows 8, converted the windows 7 from VHD to VHDX and set the sector size to 4096 as per How to Convert a VHD File into VHDX. Boot entry has also been updated to vhdx instead of vhd.
I now try to boot to this new win7 vhdx, and instead of getting an unexpected error, it booted into a graphical screen and ask for repairing the window. (which means it's unsuccessful).
Virtualization :: Upgrading From 8 To 8.1 Inside VirtualBox
Nov 26, 2013I'd like to upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 Pro. This will be run as a guest on VirtualBox 4.3.2 (the newest as of November 2013) on Ubuntu 12.04 (April 2012) with weekly updates.
In Windows Store, an attempt to upgrade fails because, it indicates that Windows 8.1 is "not supported by your CPU". This is a doubtful explanation because it runs Windows 8 fine. The CPU is an Intel i7 - 2670 QM that was released in Q4 2011 in a unit that retailed in June 2012. VirtualBox has WDDM and 3D acceleration since at least VirtualBox 4.1 which was released more than a year ago. I run with VirtualBox's display 2D acceleration ON, and previously with 3D acceleration OFF because I've had problems. However, 3D acceleration is presently ON. Regardless, Windows 8.1 will not install either way.
This is what Microsoft indicates under "more information" about Win 8.1.
Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2 (more info)RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver
I note that Windows 8 also requires PAE, NX, and SSE2 so that should not be the problem. I have allocated 4 GB RAM and about 500 GB disk, which are both more than adequate.
Edit: I use a 64 bit machine with 64 bit Linux and 64 bit Windows. Edit: Although I tried to install Windows 8.1 with 3D acceleration ON, I generally keep it OFF because it can result in a crash of my .NET application that uses a XAML window. It's not a bug that I care enough about to fix.

When I boot, Windows 8.1 is loaded automatically and afterwards, I can see the partitions in disk management for each drive.

Fans Running High Inside Laptop
Jan 11, 2014I purchased my HP laptop back in 2009. It came installed with Windows 7. It has an Intel quad-core processor and 8 gigs of RAM. I upgraded to Windows 8.1, and since then my laptop's fan has been running high and hot constantly. It did not behave this way before I upgraded the OS. The fan usually acts up when I have 2 or more things running on the laptop.

Jan 28, 2014I'm getting this random clicking sound(more of a tick-tock-ish) that's coming from within my system. I'm not sure where but it's adequately loud for me to notice. It just goes 2 clicks(tick-1 tick-2) then goes away. It doesn't have a specific time frame, like it doesn't happen every how many minutes or so.
I actually wasn't worried until I've read some sites that it could be a start of a so to be hdd failure. If it is, is there any way I could fix it? Or at least how long do I have before it goes total bye-bye on me?

Windows 8 Multi Boot Partition Says Its Empty But Has Files?
Feb 12, 2014I recently tried to install Ubuntu 12.10, and lost access to Windows 7 and 8.1, after a LOT of looking for bootable disks and stuff, I did fix it.
After recovering the operating systems (I had to delete Ubuntu partitions and then fix the Windows 7 bootloader, because there was 6 primary partitions), the Windows 8.1 partition says its 10.0GB and empty, but when I double click on it, you can see the files inside.
This is bad, because when I try to boot in Windows 8, it gets to the login screen after a long boot time, then it just shows the time, battery, and internet status, and the rest is a blue screen, implying its broken. I found out this is because some OS files are missing, which might be related to the above paragraph. I have lots of paid software in Windows 8, and it was LOTS of downloading, so I dont want to wipe the drive, or have to touch the data, only be able to boot into Windows 8 again.

Jul 8, 2013I have an Epson BX635FWD printer that has and does work perfectly with Windows XP. I have recently purchased a Lenovo B540 with Windows 8 and it loaded the print drivers immediately. I thought how easy it was but have since found that it will not print a multi page document in full, but will suddenly stop halfway through a page. I made do by printing a couple of pages at a time, but then tried to print a 10 x 15 cm photo and it would only print 1/3 before stopping and spitting the paper out. The number of pages it prints correctly before giving an error message and ejecting the paper is inconsistent.
I have reloaded driver 1.32 (for Windows 8) from the Epson site twice and I have also gone back to the disc supplied with the printer and reloaded the driver from there.
8.1 - Screwed Up Libraries And File Storage With 4 Multi HDD
Jul 24, 2014I actually have 2 problems. One with the Windows tiles, and the other one with Explorer/Libraries.
- First of all, I start with the small problem. I booted my PC today, and to my surprise, my Windows tiles were gone. Only the Store, Onedrive, Explorer and the Desktop are there. The rest? Gone. Very weird, never had this before.
So that is question 1: How to restore the Windows tiles. It's weird they disappeared, I did nothing with the configuration or something else.
- Second, and this is the main thing.
I have a serious issue with the Explorer/Libraries. My PC has 3 HDD's and 1 SSD. The SSD is, obviously, the Windows drive. Nothing special. The other 3 are for mass storage.
Stock, Windows sets all on the C drive. Like user stuff, install paths, you know. Also the libraries, like Pictures, Videos, Documents and Music. This is the part where it goes wrong.
I don't wanna have all my Music, Pics and the rest on my C drive. Only my Windows installation... So, I put my libraries into the D drive. I made a My documents folder on the empty D drive, and changed the direction path of the libraries on the left to the new My documents map. This goes good, except for the Music map.
The Music map thinks he is Desktop. I've tried to tell him, he's not, but the folder isn't listening. Without jokes, this is a really weird thing.
I tried to re position, but the Desktop and Music folder are thinking they are each other. I don't know how to solve this. The other folders do work, no problem with those. Except for these two.
Bad thing is also, I thought, if I delete the map, and create a new one, maybe that'll work. Not. Instead, Windows decided to delete both maps, Desktop and Music, so now, my icons, and music is gone. It's really weird, as I said, it's happening only with these maps.
Any solution or trick for this? Maybe,I could try and get the whole 'Users' map, from the C drive to D, so it makes one whole?

12 Nikon D5000 - Multi-Cam Remote Shutter Setup?
Dec 3, 2012I'm working on a multi-cam shooting setup. I have 12 Nikon D5000 targeting one object at different angles. I want all cameras to be triggered at the exact same time. So I have installed Vello Freewave Remote Shutter receivers on every camera and I trigger the shutter with one transmitter. They do all trigger, but sometimes, they are not all triggering at the same time. So 1 try out of 5, one or two cameras have slight shutter time difference with the other cameras. Is the radio frequency to blame? I cannot change it with the transmitter model I have. Would other setups work better?

May 15, 2014My computer is a Lenovo Y500 with windows 8. A few weeks ago I heard a friend of mine was having BSOD problems and that his computer stopped booting completely.
I brought my computer over and had a nice time, we were attempting to fix his computer by switching the hard drive out and changing his computer form windows 8 to windows 7. A USB device was used for that step. The USB device was not fully working so it was tested on the BSOD computer AND my fully working computer. His computer was fixed shortly after and began running again.
I took my computer back home and immediately noticed a slow down so I reformatted my computer.....it still seemed really choppy and laggy and froze alot. A day later I begin to get blue screens out the A$$ and eventually it comes to a Automatic repair loop. I had to order a recovery disk because my one key recovery no longer worked. I Ordered the recovery disk and bam my computer seemed to be working again after a long recovery process.
Foolishly I took my computer back to the place it seemed to work fine. Upon coming home again. I begin to notice problems and bam my computer tells me that It is in danger back up files or you may possibly lose them.
Another friend buys a new computer and he takes it to the BSOD house. Guess what he got? The BSOD he was using the flash drive used to add windows 7 to a friends computer to add windows 7 to his new laptop when it happened 6 times in a row. He recovered his computer and it seems to be working fine for now.
However my computer isn't; even after recovering it. While yes, it is moving fast and working great. The computer STILL gives me the warning that i must back up my files and what not. I also tried the CHKDSK in command prompt and it froze on 27% so I stopped it. I checked the D: and C: drives from my computer and going to properties but it said there are no problems.
The program that DOES let me know the problem still persists is the constant reminder telling me that their is a problem with the Device. Also my Intel rapid story device places an exclamation point on the HDD and says that one or more events, and data may be at risk. I do not know what to do...I feel that it is either a virus from the flash drive or possibly a Hardware problem caused by a surge in his house, but if that was true 2 of my other friends laptops would be fried as well.
It seems that this slowly happens over time each time I recover my HDD. The blue screens barely come. Its when I notice Games, and programs malfunction that the blue screen begins to show again.

Jul 18, 2013I have an old computer that I've repurposed as a file server for all the other machines on my network, and one of the things I do with it is to put various program installer files on it, so I can install them to the other machines without having to download the same file over and over. However, when accessing these remote files from any machine except those still running XP, I get an extra warning box telling me that the file "is in a location outside your local network." It's not, but for some reason, these machines think it is. I've Googled various fragments of text from these warning boxes (each Windows version has slightly different wording for this warning; the screen shot I've attached is from the Win7 machine I happen to be on right now), but no matter which variant I search for, everything I find about getting rid of this warning is either geared toward similar warnings given by MS Access for remote databases, or for marking external Web sites as trusted.
How do I tell Windows that this local file server is in fact local and not in need of these repetitive and annoying warnings?

Jan 20, 2013I just got a new laptop, a Lenovo X230, for which I paid extra to have the OS on it as Windows 8 Pro.
So--now I have it, and Win 8 Pro 64 is installed and activated on it. I am a legal owner of Win 8 Pro.
However, I would like to do a clean install of Win 8 on the computer, to have it free of bloatware, etc. (In fact, I would like to set up a multi-boot with Win 7, and perhaps even triple boot with Xp as well. (I have installation media and my product keys for XP and 7 though, so those are not really a problem.)
The computer came with no discs at all. There is a procedure to make recovery disks. I may do that, but I think those will be to restore the computer to how it came from the factory, and therefore not usable for a clean install.
I don't see my product key for Win 8 anywhere. Not on the computer, not on any kind of card that came with it, etc.
I looked at the tutorial here for clean install of Windows 8, but it requires an install disc and product key. I have neither, although I am a legal owner of Windows 8.
Is there a way I can create (from my installed Windows 8) a win 8 install disk, that can be used for a clean install? Or a link to download one? Is there a way I can get my product key?
