I am trying to install Thunderbird on a brand-new HP Envy laptop with Win 8.1. It gets to the "Create Shortcut [folder destination]" stage and hangs. I have rebooted my laptop and re-downloaded the Thunderbird install file, in case the first download contained some errors.
I am running Bitdefender Total Security 2014.
I can open all folders on the left pane except one of them. This is one of user created folders for archiving received emails. There are several other folder for the same purpose. I wonder why this particular one can not be opened.
What I have done so far includes compacting files,reinstalling the Thunderbird and trying on other Windows 8 machine..
I recently upgraded to 8.1 and cannot send or receive email. I have the latest Thunderbird and have not altered any settings. I have uninstalled Thunderbird and reinstalled it and tried to google the problem.

After a time it will "unfreeze" but them may do it again. The only way to reply is to write it on Word and paste it. All other programs seem to work OK.

If I email a message to the account set up with thunderbird it appears instantly(ish) in the program but if I'm in another program and send a message I don't get any pop up notification from thunderbird....
my elderly mother with her email access and it's a while since I've used Windows myself. When I set up the computer for her I installed Stardock so she wasn't faced with the fullscreen apps, and I installed Windows Live Mail because that is what she was used to. It was running fine for the past few months until yesterday, but now when she tries to run the program, it hangs, and there's nothing to do but restart the computer. (Task Manager doesn't see it running while it's trying to start up.)

2) Sometimes I am unable to kill the process from Task Manager or Process Explorer (access denied).
3) Sometimes it leaves behind a zombie process that can't be killed. I cannot launch a new Firefox process (it launches but stays hidden). The only solution is to reboot my computer.
4) If I leave Firefox open, after a while it becomes nonresponsive. I usually need to reboot the computer for reason 3 above.
I have seen similar behavior from Internet Explorer and iTunes, but not all the time. I am focusing on Firefox now because the problem is very repeatable.
I have scoured the internet looking for a solution but have come up empty. The Mozilla web site suggests I disable all add-ons, which I have done. This does not fix the problem, so it is something else. I have Norton Antivirus and have scanned my system for problems but it is clean (tried Malwarebytes too, but looks good). I have tried disabling my antivirus software (everything but the firewall) and still get the same problem. I have methodically gone through and made sure all of my drivers are up to date.
I have Windows 8.1 and IE11 always hangs after about 1 hour, all tabs do not respond and the top of the page says Internet Explorer (not Responding).
I can leave it for a couple of hours and nothing happens, when I right click on the IE on the taskbar and select close window an error message comes up that IE is not responding and if I click "close" nothing happens, if I click search for solution and restart, a new IE restarts but the original stays and remains "not responding".
Even Task Manager cannot close it down I have to reboot to get rid of it.
I believe I have the attest version of IE11 (11.01)
Ever since I installed Windows 8, I have had no issues, except just one.
I notice when trying to log into facebook, the page will just hang there and pretends I never pressed the login button. And when I do finally get into facebook, and I try to click on the groups I am apart of, it just seems to hang on loading the groups, it just doesnt seem to load any pages.
This happens on every browser I install. However all browsers act completely normal on any other web pages I go to.
I have jumped onto my Windows 7 computer and again I have no issues whatsoever.
I agree it would be weird that its just happening with facebook, however its the only website that just continually causes problems on my Windows 8 machine.

This occurs when signing, encrypting, or decrypting a email with a digital Certificate where the private key is secured by Microsoft Windows 8 CryptoAPI on the highest setting. Outlook requests CryptoAPI for the Key and Crashes.
This does not Happen on Windows 7. In addition, the private key can be accessed by Windows Live Mail 2012 on Windows 8 while Outlook 2010/2013 cannot.

I am using FF29. Since installing this, everytime I exit, when I come back even if hours later, it says FF is already running, and I have to Task Manager kill it.

But to reach "Save as" I have to click the down arrow.

I'm using Windows 8.1 and it's modern internet browser (which opens in full screen etc etc), just because it's fast (I tested it, faster than anything else) and looks great. My problem is not THAT big, but if there is an solution I'd like to hear it.

When I want to access my (virgin media) email I have to go back to my desktop. Altho it's in my favourties I want to have the shortcut on my task bar. I can't move the shortcut by dragging it there. Is there any other way I can get it on my task bar?

I would like to use Thunderbird so I downloaded that but when I go to the import option within Thunderbird, Windows 8 Mail doesn't come up as an option to import from. How can I move all of my mail messages (and the account settings) from Windows 8 Mail to Thunderbird? It is a POP account so I can't just log in and redownload them. I only have one email account.
I would also like to import all of my contacts from the built in Windows app into Thunderbird.

Besides that I'm using LibreOffice as my word processing application and get an error message when I try to use the "Send As Email" option from within a LibreOffice document. Apparently it is necessary to set an association in Windows 8.1 to use Windows Mail as default MAPI application. However, for that it would be necessary to find the actual application file for Windows Mail - and I cannot find this.
Is it possible to create a MAPI association for Windows Mail in Windows 8.1 or could it be that Windows Mail is not a MAPI application?
I have just brought over my Gmail account into my Outlook.com account. I can now send or receive GMail using the Outlook.com web interface. Is there a way I can create seperate Signatures for each email account (@outlook.com and @gmail.com)?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an ASUS G75 - installed a new Samsung SSD to replace a Kingston SSD + clean install W 8.1 (new product key) + updates.
Trying to login to my company email (they use gmail) through secureauth - the username is accepted and this brings up the password box, but when the password is entered, the password box disappears and all I am left with is the username box. Repeating the process gives the same result.
With the W 8.1 on the old SSD, there was no problem.
On a desktop with W 8.1 there is also no problem. The internet options seem the same on both computers.
Everything else works fine, no boot problems etc etc.
Old vista pc died, kept a running backup disc every sunday up until august when I bought an Toshibe ex. hard drive.I had quite a few problems transferring the Toshiba into the windows 8 pc. Made multiple copies on the hard drive darn near 250 gigs. So erased all those files and transferred the backups I had on discs. They're in my pc but I don't know how to access them/. I installed a couple apps but I still don't see anything. I want to send attachments via email and the pc wants me to create an association in the default section. There is a list a mile long which I don't understand. Do i install some kind of app or is something else not setup right....

View 9 Replies View RelatedDesperate to avoid using the many quite difficult shutdown options in Windows 8, i tried an old trick i used to do on computers i wanted to shutdown from remote desktop. This Works like a charm i Windows 8 too..
1. Create a file using notepad called something like: Shutdown.js
2. Put this in the file: (new ActiveXObject("Shell.Application")).ShutdownWindows();
3. Save the file somewhere you like..
4. Now you can put shortcuts where you want them - and change icons to the nifty shutdown one in system32
This shortcut will bring up the shutdown dialog box, with all functions instead of just closing Windows directly.

I have created a shutdown shortcut on my Win 8.1 tablet that works nicely.
My tablet has a physical button on the side that is used to put the tablet into instant sleep mode.
You press the button and the tablet immediately turns off (goes to sleep).
You press the button again and the tablet immediately turns on again (comes out of sleep).
I would like to create a shortcut on my desktop (NOT the Metro start screen) that will function the same way the
physical button does, that is, the tablet will immediately turn off (goes to sleep).
Someone posted something close, but not quite the same thing; ....powrprof.dll.SetSuspendState Sleep. When I create a shortcut with the above code the tablet actually *shuts down*. I know this because when I press the power button the tablet goes through the cold start up routine.
I would like the shortcut to do EXACTLY the same thing that happens when I press the power button on the tablet; go *immediately* into sleep. And pressing the power button after that should turn the tablet *immediately* back on.
