I have added some websites shortcut on my metro desktop; i.e. youtube, Yahoo mail etc. I would like to change the picture on this shortcut Icon.. Is it possible..

I'm using Windows 8.1 and it's modern internet browser (which opens in full screen etc etc), just because it's fast (I tested it, faster than anything else) and looks great. My problem is not THAT big, but if there is an solution I'd like to hear it.
How can I pin this modern browser to my desktop, or taskbar (down there y'know) as a shortcut?
I've been reading some threads that say
- it CANNOT be done,
other threads that say:
- IT CAN be done with some Registry Editing or something,
and some say
- it CAN be done with Metro App link (I tested it, great app but won't include Explorer)
Is it possible to do it with regedit? And if so, I'd like to know how and what is the exact path to create a shortcut (I'm not THAT good with reg editing)
When I click onto the Internet Explorer tile on my Windows 8.1 Start screen Windows switches to the Desktop and opens Internet Explorer there as a Desktop application.
Can it really be possible that the Internet Explorer 11 is not a Metro application? Not that I am especially hot about the Start screen with all its tiles but it makes me wonder why the Internet Explorer - in my opinion the most important application for most "normal" Windows users - is not opening as a Metro application.
Is or is not the Internet Explorer a Metro application? If it is, how can I use it as such one?
Big drawback with the Metro version of IE is that it doesn't seem possible to change the text size -- on a large monitor using the "Normal" version -- the desktop version of IE I can change the text size at will and zoom the image which I usually have at 150%.
The text size on the Metro version is FAR FAR too small for me on a large monitor -- can see myself needing a "White Stick" if I had to carry on reading like that for too long.
This whole idea of rigid window sizes where you can't zoom seems ridiculous.
Note here -- It MIGHT work on a TOUCH screen by pinching the sides but
1) can't test it as I don't have (or want) a touch screen when I'm working at a Desk.
2) The last thing I want to do is leave smeary finger marks over my nice expensive large LCD screen
3) even if it had touch - I'm sitting far too far away from it to make this a practical method of working to alter text and zoom etc.
(On a Samsung smart phone I don't have problems with text size by pinching the screen - but I'm NOT working on a PHONE when I'm at my desk with a nice large screen).
I want to use Internet Explorer in metro mode, but whenever I set Chrome as my default browser, this causes IE to only open in desktop mode ? Why can I only have use IE in metro mode if it is the default browser ?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI bought a Dell 17r laptop a couple days ago and about an hour ago my IE 10 Metro switched to desktop when I clicked it, and now it wont switch back to metro! ive reset the IE TWICE now and nothing worked, I've tried multiple solutions and NOTHING has work(obviously) the desktop version is ugly.

The favorites list in the menu bar can't be scrolled with the mouse wheel, so that's out, and pinning the Favorites Center would be too intrusive.
The IE default home page of Dell Venue Pro 11 is MSN. The link is: MSN.com. The OS is running win 8.1 and IE is ver 11.
I went to settings of IE from the desktop and changed the default from MSN to Google.com . However this did not work It keeps defaulting back to MSN.
I did a quick scan with Malwarebytes , no malware that I know of .
Ever since I upgraded from 7 to 8.1 the laptop has been progressively getting worse at keeping login details fort eh different sites I use regularly (like this one).
It is getting to be very very irritating to have to re enter my login detail when accessing forums Ebay etc etc... Have made sure I have saved cookies for the sites with CCleaner , made sure I have ticked remember this login and the site's remember this password but the problem like I said is getting beyond a joke.
I never had this problem with 7 and along with some of the other little niggles of 8.1 I am seriously thinking of reverting back to 7 although it does run slower.
My desktop icons/links to Facebook, Ebay, Google, Emails, etc, all worked yesterday, now none will work. I get a pop-up error message displaying the link and stating "unspecified error".
View 6 Replies View RelatedIn a Dell notebook, o/s Windows 8.1, from an icon in the Desktop or in the Quick Access area IE opens behind the Desktop. The tabs for MSN and another user specific opening page can be seen above the Desktop window. I could not find a way to alter this strange behaviour or find its cause.
The laptop is new and has displayed this problem previously and returned to normal behaviour without input from the owner/user. The problem recurred after a restart following the installation of TeamViewer and Malwarebytes AntiMalware.
I have just updated my windows 8 pc and it asked me about selecting my browser, I choose internet explorer. However I have now gone onto my desktop part of my laptop and the internet explorer icon has disappeared. I can still get on through the windows 8 side of things but I want the icon back on the desktop.

Having navigated to "C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms" I can't see a desktop shortcut there but I'm fairly sure there was one before.
I quite often place files on my Windows 8 desktop while im working on various stuff and have a problem with icons I cant fix, for example: I have a number of PDF files currently on my desktop and my pdf program is foxit. I DONT WANT TO CHANGE THE PROGRAM ICON, just the icons of the files it makes. I had the same issue on win7 and i know I can change folder view options to "show icons and not thumbnails" but unfortunately that screws up my image icons.
In windows 7, "types" and "nirsoft files type manager" allowed you to change the file type icon from the thumbnail to whatever icon you wanted. These 2 progs plus another I've tried don't work in win 8pro?
IE Metro tile is missing from my metro start screen. It's not in the 'all apps' list either. when I go to program default, it is set as the default browser. I went through all the checks in the tutorial on here, but at best, I can only get the desktop IE tile to pin to start. I would rather have the metro version tile on my start.

Is there a way to have my Suddenlink email service linked to the mail button on windows 8. When I click on it I get a message that says Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not properly installed. But to reach "Save as" I have to click the down arrow.

I am trying to install Thunderbird on a brand-new HP Envy laptop with Win 8.1. It gets to the "Create Shortcut [folder destination]" stage and hangs. I have rebooted my laptop and re-downloaded the Thunderbird install file, in case the first download contained some errors.
I am running Bitdefender Total Security 2014.
When I want to access my (virgin media) email I have to go back to my desktop. Altho it's in my favourties I want to have the shortcut on my task bar. I can't move the shortcut by dragging it there. Is there any other way I can get it on my task bar?
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe desktopUI all my software can connect fine to the internets, browsers, emaiclients, games etc etc. On the MetroUI nothing connects to the internet. for example with the windows app store i get the message (roughly translated from Dutch) "Windows store didn't connect to server or timed out, wait a few minutes and try again" clicking the back button top right, or the try again "link" have no response whatsoever.

I am using Windows 8. Is there a way that I can make a shortcut for Chrome that will open multiple URL's at once? I know how to make one that will open a single URL, but is there a way to open several? For example, can I make a shortcut on my desktop that will open google.com, facebook.com and twitter.com all at once.

I have already installed Skype desktop to get around the Live ID crap for the metro version, and I will install Thunderbird if needed, but if I can find a way around it I will use the built in mail client.
Yesterday I plugged in a headphone/microphone to use Dragon, a voice recognition software. It may be just a coincidence, but since then I haven't been able to hear any sound off the internet. I have a High definition audio device 5.1 surround speaker system that still plays mp3's, and movie DVD's, just fine through my speakers and/or my headphones. If I make a mistake in typing, I hear the error bell or computer sound through my speakers. However, if I go to youtube or some news outlet, or anything online, I hear no sound.
I've gone to my device manager and selected each of the sound devices and set them as the default device, but it doesn't work. I check the properties on each of the devices and get the response that the device is working properly. It is hard to argue with a computer, but I certainly disagree, because I still get no Internet sounds.
I'm running Windows 8. Intel Core i7-3770 CPU 3.40GHz with 32GB RAM. DirectX version 11.
I have installed Windows 8 RP, and everything works fine, except I cannot access internet from metro apps: IE, Store, New, Mail etc. Does not access internet, even though I have access to internet from Desktop? I have tried everything, and googled for hours without any useful result.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI cannot remove my Windows Live email account so whenever I want to send email, I had to click on the "Gmail" tab first then compose email and I don't want this because it's somehow not efficient.
I use the default Windows 8.1 Mail client but I never used my Windows Live account.
Is there any ways to remove Windows Live email or at least make Gmail as the default email address on Windows Mail?
1. my win 7 laptop went "poof"
2. got new computer (but they only have windows 8) am using the desktop part of the computer & installed a start menu so it "looked" reasonably like windows 7.
3. installed windows live mail on new computer since windows 8 has a weird email program.
4. had win 7 computer backed up, so had all my windows live emails safely there.
5. copied all the old win 7 emails into the NEW win 8 live email program
6. everything worked great,, could get new emails & all the old ones were there.
7. worked around the NEW live mail, by changing names of folders, deleting some emails etc. so the folder list was NOT the same as when I moved them, ( I have tons of folders under my inbox 13 years of saved emails)
8. looked in windows explorer at the folder where the emails were supposed to be saved.
9. but,,,,,,,,,,,, nothing was changed,,, it still was all the old names etc.
10. for example, I changed a folder name (IN live mail)from dog to cat, & deleted cow.
11. but looking at windows explorer it was still dog & cow was still there.
12. opening live mail,,, it was the changed folders cat.
13. so I do not get it..
14. why didn't the folders in windows explorer CHANGE to reflect all my changes in windows live mail?
15. I need to keep backing up this folder , in case something else goes "poof" To use it for restore.
I have an HP laptop running Windows 8. On 09/15, it did an automatic update to Windows. After that I am not able to browse internet using any browser - IE, firefox, Chrome. My laptop connects to internet. Apps like yahoo messenger works fine. But browsers wont.
I searched internet and as per some forums I tried 'netsh winsock reset ' command. After that browser will connect to internet, but after a minute or so, it stops connecting. Also, I noticed that when I do a restart, the laptop doesnt restart. It shows the 'Restarting' screen for hours and I have to manaully power it off.
I have no clue what update was pushed by microsoft which messed up my laptop. The laptop is pretty new and I did not have any issues until the windows update.
(I don't use IE a lot ) I run a completely updated Windows 8.1 (home?) edition operating system so the browser I take it should be fully updated already. I have tried opening it directly from the local directory for it and also running as an administrator and neither would make it open.
There is no error message and there is no direct indication in the processes currently running under task manager that shows that it has booted up and is just not responding.
I thought maybe I could uninstall it but... then I look under program and features and I didn't see any relative program to uninstall for it. I remember a few years back uninstalling like version six or seven under a xp operating machine but that was ages ago.
I am using the mail app in Windows 8 fine on one laptop (Windows 8.1), but on my other one the program has started to just close in the middle of reading a mail, or when I click the delete mail button.
