Dell XPS13 / Win 8.1 Pro - Can't Shut Off Physical Keyboard Key Clicks

May 29, 2014

I just took delivery of a Dell XPS13 with touchscreen and Windows 8.1 Pro. This is the third such computer we have bought, so I know my problem isn't endemic to the XPS13.

Right out of the box it makes a particularly annoying click whenever a key is pressed on the physical keyboard. I can't find anything in Control Panel or on the web on how to change this. I do find plenty of information on how to turn off on-screen keyboard clicks but that doesn't work.

Background Windows Responding To Clicks

Jul 4, 2014

I have an issue with Windows 8. Whenever I have used past Windows operating systems, left clicking on a window in the background only brought that window to the front. However, with Windows 8, when I click on a background window to bring it to the front, the window that I am trying to bring front responds to the click on the page. How do I make it so that when I click anywhere on a background window, it ONLY brings it front and does not respond to the click?

Hardware Drivers :: Dell XPS 7100 System - Keyboard And Mouse Not Working?

Jul 18, 2014

No keyboard or mouse by attempting to add safe mode with networking. What is UEFI? Where do I find this USB viewable option as I am connected by USB?

I went to set up (F2 at boot) > and then searched around for anything that relates to USB and found that USB is enabled and on high speed. Hope that is not it and I am missing something, because I still have no mouse or keyboard.

Keyboard and mouse are the ones that came with the Dell XPS 7100 system. I'll try different USB ports and report back...didn't make a difference.

Maintenance :: Physical Memory Full

my physical memory is at 97% all of a sudden and causing major lag in games. Nothing in the task manager is using that much memory so I don't know what's causing it. I have Windows 8.1 with 8 gigs.

Edit: I tried to restart and there is one app that isn't closing and preventing it from restarting. It doesn't tell me what the app is called. How do I find out what program that is?

Maintenance :: Physical Memory Usage Never Exceed To 31%

Jun 28, 2013

No matter what I try to do normally my physical memory usage never seems to exceed 31% even if I'm doing something that means the processor is flat-out. However, I gave the system stressing tool 'HeavyLoad' a whirl and it did deplete all the memory (eventually), but in terms of whether I'm watching 5 HD videos or working on Photoshop it just will not budge.

Network / Sharing :: Skydrive Folders Have Become Associated With The Physical SSD?

Feb 20, 2014

I have 8.1 on an SSD 128 GB with some nominal programs. It seems, no, it is suddenly filling up. I have 17 GB left. The other day had over 60 GB remaining, then it got smaller and now the 17. After some poking around and thought, it seems that my making a backup image of this SSD with 8.1 and my other SSd with Windows 7, and putting them on Skydrive, it is somehow attached itself to my physical drive. In the Skydrive folder, these two folders have an attention icon on them. What does that icon mean and could these folders (whose total GB just about equals what I have lost recently) have become associated with the physical SSD?

When i attempt to share any of my drives (physical or virtual) on my Win 8.1 machine I receive a message, "This drive cannot be shared". This machine is a member of a Homegroup and I have read access to/from this machine.

As I am attempting to share a drive I am using advanced share and have included homegroup users in the list I want to share to.

I have now managed to share the drives on the Win 8 machine, however when i look at Homegroup in Windows explorer I can see the shared drives of the Win 7 machines but when I click on them it says I don't have permission despite having put Homeusers in the permissions list of both the sharing tab and permissions tab of Shared Drive/properties.

Does Windows 8 Really Shut Down?

Oct 5, 2012

I'm using Windows 8 Professional (got it from MSDNAA as soon as it appeared there ) and it seems to me that Windows 8 doesn't really shut down properly. I attached an image taken with Snipping Tool and it showed that the CPU up-time is 4 days etc etc..

The inconsistency here is, I just booted up my laptop few minutes ago. I did shut down my laptop properly every time. The only explanation here is that this 4 days ago was the day when I placed my battery back into the laptop.

But the laptop supposed to shut down PROPERLY right?

Cannot Shut Down PC Without Switching Off PSU?

Jul 27, 2014

Yesterday while I was sleeping, a thunder struck nearby my house while my PC was running. After that I immediately switched the PSU from 1 to 0 without trying to shut it down properly. Since then I cannot shut down my PC without switching off the PSU. To tell you exactly what happens, I press the shutdown button in Windows 8.1 normally, after that it shuts down for around half a second, turns back on for half a second and then again turns off for half a second. After that it powers back on. I forgot to mention that my integrated network card on the motherboard died after the lightning as well. My MOBO has some kind of electrostatic discharge protection as well. Last thing, when I booted up my PC for the first time after I turned it off by switching off the PSU, it said "Setting thing up for you" like I started Windows for the first time.

System specs:
Motherboard: Gigabyte 970A-D3
CPU: AMD FX-8320 @ 3.5ghz
GPU: MSI 7790 1GB OC GDDR5

Windows 8.1 Won't Shut Down

Aug 5, 2014

For the past 2 weeks (approximately), when I click "Shut Down" on my Win 8 laptop, nothing happens. If I click "Sleep," it goes to sleep right away, but it will not shut down. I see by the forum posts that my problem isn't unique. I have tried all three methods described in the post: [URL] .... - all to no avail. I have also tried Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do and unchecked Turn on fast start up as other posts have suggested.

In Method 2 described in the post above, I ran sfc /scannow and ended up with the following result:

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in C:/Windows/Logs/CBS/cbs.log. (I tried to attach the file but it's 15MB, too large).

My Win 8 machine is new (only a few months old) and my system specs are attached also. It was shutting down fine, I have a feeling this happened during a Windows Update.

Maintenance :: Computer Won't Shut Down?

Mar 4, 2014

I recently built my fourth computer with the following components:

Case: Thermaltake Soprano Mid-Tower VO900M1N2N
MOBO: ASUS Z-87 Deluxe/Quad
CPU: Intel i7-4770K (Haswell)
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3 1600
PSU: Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 800W
HD: Samsung 840 EVO 1TB
GPU: ASUS Radeon HD7790
Logitech MX3000 Wireless Keyboard & Mouse Combo

The operating system is Windows 8.1 Pro (clean install on the SSD). The system is so fast and awesome that it refuses to shut down. It makes no difference how I shutdown, it restarts in about 3 seconds. I have to physically cut power to the PSU to shut it down. I have updated all the device drivers and have the latest BIOS (version 1707) according to the ASUS website. I

As a troubleshooting measure, I also did a clean install of Windows 8.1 (not Pro version) on a 250 GB WD HD without the MOBO and GPU drivers and booted with only this HD (all other storage devices unplugged). The same problem persists so I believe it is a BIOS setting or a motherboard problem. I am using the default BIOS settings without overclocking the CPU.

8.1 RT Doesn't Shut Down Properly

Oct 3, 2013

I've done a fresh install of 8.1 RT and all appears to be well except if I shut down.

If I select restart it restarts fine.

However if I select Shutdown, I get the woindows shreen telling me it's shutting down, then the monitor goes blank, but the PC is going indefinitely (I've given it 15 mins)

If I press the reset button on the PC case it reboots into windows without any "windows didn't shut down" type messages during bootup.

However if I check the event log, it does say

The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Fan At Full Speed During Shut Down And Sleep

Jul 12, 2013

I recently purchased a new desktop and it came with Windows 8 installed on it. Everything worked fine for the first two weeks. Then, I noticed my fan was running at full speed when I'd come into the room after a while. My desktop was in sleep mode, so I was like, Woke my desktop up and the fan returned to normal. Every time my computer goes into sleep mode, the fan kicks on full blast. Okay... maybe no sleep mode, but the fan will shut off when I shut down my computer, right? Nope again. When my computer is shut down, the fan is still running at full speed. The thing is, when my computer is in sleep mode or shut down, the fan runs at full speed, but when I'm using it (like now) the fan is normal.

I've been looking around trying to find something related to my problem. I've came across a few articles on the forums, like Fans still running after shutdown of windows 8. Seems like my same problem, but it was during his install he shut down Windows. However, there was talk of this "bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes", but I don't really want to mess with the my boot.ini files... I'm not bad at small programs, but I really don't want to toy around and destroy my desktop right now.

I've read some other articles about a Windows 8 laptop in idle mode with the same problem, and they said it was antivirus related. I figured that if that were the case, shouldn't have I seen it during the first time I booted up my desktop?

I think I started noticing this problem AFTER I installed some windows updates from Microsoft... Any way to verify that everything went smoothly, I kinda assumed and left my computer running while it was updating...
