I had upgraded to Windows 8.1 after purchasing Inspiron 660s with Windows 8.0.
Under the Files Folder / Favorites group SkyDrive listed as a favorite. However, at the same level as Favorites, there is a OneDrive folder.
Under Windows 8.1, should not there be only OneDrive listed everywhere? Did something go wrong in the upgrade to 8.1?
I have been using Windows 8.1 desktop (Dell 8700) for a little more than 6 months. I am very happy with its performance. The computer is very fast. But here is one hitch. As all of you might know that the original SkkyDrive was converted into OneDrive during Microsoft auto-updating process. OneDrive is the one supposed to be used.
Right now, I see both SkyDrive and OneDrive folders in the computer (even in my Windows 7 computers). There is no SkyDrive in "Uninstall program". So I could not remove the SkyDrive folder. Just "delete" SkyDrive folder" does not work either. Because of this problem, I was not able to study how to use OneDrive.
What is interesting to me is that SkyDrive seems to be still active and OneDrive, dormant. For example, c:UsersusernameOneDrivePicturesCamera Roll is active. The Camera Roll folder in the SkyDrive shows all pictures taken today with iPhone. On the other hand, OneDriveCameral Roll folder has a few old pictures.
how to get rid of the SkyDrive and force OneDrive as an active Cloud storage?
I have three machines running Windows 8.1 Update 1 and for some reason one of the machines does not like OneDrive. When I first boot the system the OneDrive Cloud appears in the tray. However, as soon as I hover the mouse over it to see the sync status the Cloud Icon goes away and I think I get the SkyDive 1000 error in the Event Log. I don't know what I did to screw it up on this machine

But when I right click in the taskbar on the cloud icon, it says "OpenSky Drive in Explorer" and there were no Windows updates pertaining to OneDrive I had to manually install the above thinking it would change the name of the SkyDrive folder in the left pane to OneDrive but it didn't
I'm trying to run the Dell Backup and Recovery application on a new windows 8 xps 8500. Unfortunately all the tile labels are only showing IDS tags eg: IDS_DS_022,IDS_DS_003 and when I click on a tile the subsequent window is also full of different IDS tags. I know I can save files directly to OneDrive (in the cloud) or I can move/copy stuff to the OneDrive in the cloud. OneDrive then Syncs the cloud stuff to the User OneDrive folder. What's the point? Just a backup or does Windows 8.1 use the Synced information on the local machine (C:UserMynameOneDrive) to speed up processing and then Sync it back to the Cloud? I think I like it but just want to understand what is going on. Is there a "white" paper or something that explains in a little more detail, some link. Also, does it then make sense to include the OneDrive folder in the Library so that it gets backed up using Windows 8.1's File History function?

The problem is I can put it in documents folder in skydrive folder, but when I need to download it from skydrive, skydrive flags it as a possible virus and stops the download. View 6 Replies View RelatedHaving a strange issue with Onedrive. If I drag/drop files into my "local machine" onedrive folder it automatically syncs up with my onedrive account in the cloud. So the same files are both on my home system and in the cloud. That works. I can log on thru my browser at the onedrive site and log on, copy and download files...upload thru the browser and it will also show up on my local harddrive....so that works too.
The issue I'm having is if I use my metro tile screen, click on onedrive app, it opens up, I can see all the files in my onedrive account.....however if I right click while in app, then click upload it opens up my folder, I can pick the file I wish to upload and click "add to onedrive" nothing ever gets uploaded. No error message or anything, just nothing happens when using the app. No files ever show up or get uploaded. I can also pick a file using the onedrive app (from the cloud) and click download (to my local system), it allows me to pick the destination and hit OK, but I get an message " the file couldn't be saved" no matter where I decide to put it. So while onedrive is working for the most part if I bypass the windows 8 metro app, it is not working inside the app itself.
I have an extra SkyDrive folder that has shown up as a sub folder of Documents:
C:UsersEricDocumentsSkyDrive
It synchronizes in both locations, one at the root tree of explorer and one in the Documents folder however in this case I only want one SkyDrive folder not two. Is there a way to remove the one that exists here:

XPS-15 L521X running Windows 8 Pro. I have Intel Rapid Storage Manager installed and operating (thinking this may matter). I have tried 4 times to upgrade to 8.1, no-go. It completes the upgrade to the point of restarting after making all configurations (according to the message text), but on restart it goes from Dell logo to blank screen, though I can hear the disk churning, and the mouse shows when I swipe the keypad; mouse also shows a busy indicator. I tried leaving the system alone last night for 6 hours, but when I came back it was still churning on the blank screen. When I shut down the system via power button and re-booted, it restored the original windows 8 and gave me a message that the system could not be upgraded to 8.1.
I tried uninstalling my firewall/virus program and that didn't work. At this point I don't care to guess anymore... I may call tech support and see what they say. I see by others' posts around the internet that there seem to many problems upgrading to 8.1.
I use SkyDrive quite every time. For each file, I copy to my Windows explorer folder of SkyDrive, I have to individually right click each file and select Make Available online only. I want the explorer to do this for each and every file I copy to the folder so that I don't need to waste time to do it all by myself.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI've been doing some testing moving around files to and from a test folder on SkyDrive under Win8.1 rtm and seem to got myself into a position where the SkyDrive client thinks a file should be synced from the local machine but fails as it "has a problem"
Metro SkyDrive shows an error "Files can't be uploaded because there's a problem with a file or folder" - View Details/Close
Clicking View Details displays "Problem" the folder/file in error and that's it. No option to ignore/delete or anything.
I've tried totally deleting the folders from the root of SkyDrive to no avail.
Windows Explorer shows the skydrive folder with an explanation mark - right clicking and selecting "View Problem" goes to the Metro Skydrive page detailing the file as above.
I know SkyDrive is explicitly excluded from File History backup in 8.1 but how I could get the same functionality?
I'm using File History to make ad-hoc system images from C: to E: and also various libraries. As SkyDrive doesn't get backed up even if in a library is there some other (free) tool I can use or some way to replicate the functionality?
I'd like to have the time stamped versions of files if possible. I was thinking of replicating Skydrive to another folder somehow and then backing that up with file explorer but that seems a rather inefficient way of doing things.
Been able to get file versions to work with skydrive? I've read that if your skydrive offline files are pointing inside a library that the file versions will be captured. With 8.1 RTM it appears to me that the offline file versions are by default included in the documents library but I am having no luck getting them captured.
File versions is enabled and I can get other libraries files captured just not those from skydrive.
I really like the way Skydrive synchronises my folders between my work and home laptops and I have my Skydrive docs available offline. But why is Skydrive excluded from the list of libraries that are backed up by File History. I want to be able to back my docs up onto an external hard drive. Is there no way of doing this? Same with Backup on Windows 7, Skydrive seems to be excluded.

View 6 Replies View RelatedEither with my startup today, or sometime in the last day or two, all my drives/partitions in Windows Explorer (and XYplorer) have lost their labels and are now showing as "Local Disk." Looking in Windows 8 Computer Management and EaseUs Partition Manager, the labels are there, as shown in the screenshot. I ran all three main repair modules of Yamicsoft Windows 8 Manager and there have been a few reboots, but still the same.

Just bought this new XPS 8500 great computer. However, trying to learn the new Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10 is an experience. Am unable to see all the favorites and realize maybe I should organize them better. Therefore, how would you setup a folder(s) to better organize favorites. I tried to follow the directions by going to Windows website and they state that you click on the add to Favorites and an option related to a folder shows up. However, I only see the option to add to Favorites or to pin to start.

View 4 Replies View RelatedSince 2 days ago I've noticed that I cannot create a new folder with File Explorer by any way possible. Using the taskbar or the SHIFT + Ctrl + N. Even when saving projects with Save File as... and trying to use the "New Folder" text string button does not create any folder. Using CMD prompt or powershell all works well as with Total Commander which i only installed to see if it could create folders and it does. Other programs that auto create folders also works well (i.e. Foobar when transcoding to new unavailable folder). My Windows 8 Pro is original, it's a 4 month old install, I've not made any customizations, no registry hacks, Windows is bare apart from Classic Shell which i only use now as a custom button to go to start screen with the mouse. I also made a custom High Contrast Theme that i use at night or when eyes are a bit tired. It's 2 months old so it's there long before the problem.I've not installed any new programs in the last week apart from some updates from FileZilla, Foxit pdf and Notepad++.Last system update is COPICOM from 13 July.I followed this guide which as not resolved the problem: I cannot find a way to create a new folder in Windows 8. -

I found this solution, You cannot back up a file in Windows Server 2008 R2 or in Windows 7 if the path length is longer than 260 characters but it is only for previous version of Windows OS. View 9 Replies View RelatedMy laptop is top of the range spec one with Core i7, 8GB RAM, Dedicated GPU, every thing else work super fast, i am very annoyed by this one problem which i have been observing When ever i create a new folder/file or download a new file or rename a new file it does not immediately show up, if i try to open the renamed file it says windows cannot find that file (because its actually been renamed but does not yet show up in the folder), Every time i have to press F5 to refresh the folder or the desktop so the computer refreshes and shows the changes made (i.e new folder, renamed folder, new file etc...)
Is there a way so computer immediately shows the change rather than me having to close and open that folder or refresh the page every time i rename or create a file ?
So i'm trying to delete this file i have in my downloads folder, which is a normal .avi file. however, this file is really broken, it wont delete. I suspect this file makes my folder not showing thumbnails and acting slow and sometimes wont show anything at all, just a loading bar thing.
i tried deleting with cmd prompt, while explorer.exe is off, but command prompt stops responding.
i tried searching the folder for viruses, finds nothing.
i tried downloading Unlocker to delete it, but ends up with unlocker stops responding.
i tried quarantine the file, it gets into quarantine in NOD32 but the file is also still in my download folder, and NOD stops responding.
i get no message at all trying to delete it, it's just that nothing at all happens.
What is wrong with this file?! It plays fine though, just like a normal .avi file. Is there anything else i can try? cmd prompt and NOD32 don't get the windows "has stopped working" message, they just stop responding to me clicking any button in NOD32, or writing new text in cmd prompt. i can exit them as normal.
I have only been using windows 8 for a few weeks and I am still getting my head round it. I have copied some documents from my old laptop onto my new one and have notice that most of the files are now all mixed up. I am trying to drag and drop them into the order in which I want them set out, for example my bank statements, utility bills etc are no longer in date order. I have tried to do it from the drop down box which says descending, ascending, date etc, but they are still all mixed up. Is there a way to drag and drop a file so that I can slot it into the place I want it to be, like you can with photos in Picasa, there doesn't seem to be a drag and drop in windows 8 (or am I missing it somewhere along the line)?
