The file Name(s) would be too long for the destination folder. I have get this message while coping the files from one External HDD to another. I found this solution, You cannot back up a file in Windows Server 2008 R2 or in Windows 7 if the path length is longer than 260 characters but it is only for previous version of Windows OS. How to fix this on win 8 x64? The file sysytems on both HDDs are exFat.
View 9 RepliesWe just purchased a new office computer and it came equipped with windows 8. Everything seemed to set up wonderfully as I connected back up to the server we have here in the office that is running Windows 2008 Server. I set up my printers, I mapped the network drives I needed.
The problem I am having is that the mapped drives seemed to be "read-only." I can view and open all files, but I cannot save or create new folders on the drive. I have not changed anything on the server, as far as user settings or permissions because everything was working smooth on the former computer that ran WinXP.
I have checked the "manage your credentials" to ensure I have the proper Windows Credentials loaded. Below you will see a screen shot of what I keep running into.

It crashed and now I'm stuck iwth a Folder within a Folder which as a really long name (basically about 50 names) I cannot delete the file. It's advising me to rename it which I've tired but fail miserably. I attempted to use CMD like this:
C:UsersName>DEL "?ESteam Backup Games"
?ESteam Backup Games*, Are you sure (Y/N) Y
Nothing happens.. the folder is still there.
I'm pretty much stuck and I cannot remove this folder.
I also created another similar to this but the Folders are empty and the name of both the folders is called "Steam BackUp Games 2" yet i can't shift+del it...

View 4 Replies View RelatedSince 2 days ago I've noticed that I cannot create a new folder with File Explorer by any way possible. Using the taskbar or the SHIFT + Ctrl + N. Even when saving projects with Save File as... and trying to use the "New Folder" text string button does not create any folder. Using CMD prompt or powershell all works well as with Total Commander which i only installed to see if it could create folders and it does. Other programs that auto create folders also works well (i.e. Foobar when transcoding to new unavailable folder). My Windows 8 Pro is original, it's a 4 month old install, I've not made any customizations, no registry hacks, Windows is bare apart from Classic Shell which i only use now as a custom button to go to start screen with the mouse. I also made a custom High Contrast Theme that i use at night or when eyes are a bit tired. It's 2 months old so it's there long before the problem.I've not installed any new programs in the last week apart from some updates from FileZilla, Foxit pdf and Notepad++.Last system update is COPICOM from 13 July.I followed this guide which as not resolved the problem: I cannot find a way to create a new folder in Windows 8. -
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy laptop is top of the range spec one with Core i7, 8GB RAM, Dedicated GPU, every thing else work super fast, i am very annoyed by this one problem which i have been observing When ever i create a new folder/file or download a new file or rename a new file it does not immediately show up, if i try to open the renamed file it says windows cannot find that file (because its actually been renamed but does not yet show up in the folder), Every time i have to press F5 to refresh the folder or the desktop so the computer refreshes and shows the changes made (i.e new folder, renamed folder, new file etc...)
Is there a way so computer immediately shows the change rather than me having to close and open that folder or refresh the page every time i rename or create a file ?
So i'm trying to delete this file i have in my downloads folder, which is a normal .avi file. however, this file is really broken, it wont delete. I suspect this file makes my folder not showing thumbnails and acting slow and sometimes wont show anything at all, just a loading bar thing.
i tried deleting with cmd prompt, while explorer.exe is off, but command prompt stops responding.
i tried searching the folder for viruses, finds nothing.
i tried downloading Unlocker to delete it, but ends up with unlocker stops responding.
i tried quarantine the file, it gets into quarantine in NOD32 but the file is also still in my download folder, and NOD stops responding.
i get no message at all trying to delete it, it's just that nothing at all happens.
What is wrong with this file?! It plays fine though, just like a normal .avi file. Is there anything else i can try? cmd prompt and NOD32 don't get the windows "has stopped working" message, they just stop responding to me clicking any button in NOD32, or writing new text in cmd prompt. i can exit them as normal.
I have only been using windows 8 for a few weeks and I am still getting my head round it. I have copied some documents from my old laptop onto my new one and have notice that most of the files are now all mixed up. I am trying to drag and drop them into the order in which I want them set out, for example my bank statements, utility bills etc are no longer in date order. I have tried to do it from the drop down box which says descending, ascending, date etc, but they are still all mixed up. Is there a way to drag and drop a file so that I can slot it into the place I want it to be, like you can with photos in Picasa, there doesn't seem to be a drag and drop in windows 8 (or am I missing it somewhere along the line)?

On one partition while in Windows Explorer the "New Item" option only has "Folder" as one of it's items. Same if I right click, "Folder" is the only item. On the other partition "New Item" shows a list of items including text file, bitmap file, shortcut etc. Something happened recently as I have text files I've created since a few weeks ago. Opening a folder in file explorer often shows it empty when I know it isn't! Also if I try to delete the "empty" folder, explorer reports it has found x number of files and is preparing to delete! If I quit that and look in the folder there are the files.
I also have issues with file explorer opening a folder and apparently scanning the contents - a green bar very slowly creeps across regardless of how frequently I've looked in the folder earlier in the day.
I have six drives mostly pretty full with a mixture of thousands of small files and thousands of very large images. Windows 8 file explorer seems to have problems coping.

When I click on empty space, everything is fine. When I select multiple files or folders, i CAN right click on them.
I'm running Windows 8.1 (standard/ home edition) and can't download a couple .exe files. I get "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy to this folder". errors. I'm the only user on this computer and have administrator access.
The file resides on mediafire and via my ipad I was able to manage to transfer it to dropbox, but I still get the same error. The filename (partial) is created but no further downloading is done.
I can't take ownership of the file-- it doesn't exist on my computer yet.
I can't change the local security policy (I understand this is only available in Win 8 Pro version).
UAC is already disabled as much as I can figure (via the slider set to never notify).

I need configuring file history. I want to have it store files on a shared folder in a local hard rive but I want that folder to be inaccessible to other computers on my home network.
Now its fairly easy to set up a shared folder on a local drive and store file history there but the problem is that other computers can see all my files. I tweaked the sharing permissions on my folder so I removed the 'Everyone' user and put in my user name (which is an admin) and set the permissions to full control. Despite setting the permissions to only my user account, other computers are still able to open the shared file history folder and view and edit its contents.
I can't disable file sharing all together because then it would defeat the purpose of what I am trying to do and also I have another computer on my network store its files on my computer through file history.
I am installing the Direct Download version of Windows 8. As it begins to setup it goes to a screen named "What needs your attention". It says "The following things need your attention before you can continue to the installation". It goes on to say "Change the folder or file name of C:users on drive C:"
It gives me an option called "Open" which takes me to this C: drive. However, I cannot change the name of C:users. Not even with administrative permission.
A user provided the OP with a Desktop.ink file, and nothing was said about what to do with the file that was provided. I'm having the same problem, where I deleted the file by accident and now there is no live tile for the desktop anywhere on the start screen, not even in the All Apps category. I can't find it in the Windows Store either. What do I do? Here is a screenshot of the folder that I *think* held the original desktop file.
