I want to be able to see a preview of a file or folder in the right hand side, some will preview some don't. How can I make it so that everyone that I click on shows a preview?

I turned my laptop right off last night (I usually just put it into sleep mode) and now, since rebooting this morning, I can't get the menu to slide in from the right hand side. Instead, the Power and Search icons are showing at the top of the start screen along side my name and avatar.
I've recently had to have a new hard drive but the menu has been working OK until now.
Is there a setting somewhere that I need to change to get this back?
My wifi on my laptop keeps acting up. at a random time the wifi bar in the lower right hand side turns to a yellow exclamation mark over it, after hovering over it it says 'limited'. Usually if i just turn off the wifi then immediately on again it will sort it out.
Can't work out if its a driver issue, my isp or a windows 8.1 issue. The laptop i have is an assus k53sv. the driver i have installed is 'Qualcomm Atheros AR9002WB-1NG'.
This seems to be happening more and more, I am using my PC (with Windows 8 Pro) as an HTPC and its connected via HDMI to a plasma TV so the PC is always on. Sometimes, when I go to use the pc I turn the TV on and then move the mouse around to turn the display on and I see the attached image, it looks as though the screen has shifted to the right and wrapped around to the other side.
I ran windows 7 with the same hardware on this setup for years without an issue.
I have a 60mb fibre broadband - on my old laptop (Win 8.1)with no external antenna, only what is built into the machine - I am getting over 62mb on several tests. My desktop - fourcore intel i5, 8mb ram on Windows 8 has no antenna either so I have an Alfa (AWUS036NH) with a 6db gain aerial attached, is struggling to reach 20mb. They are located side by side.

I also tried to edit regedit as a tutorial found on Bing said to follow to enabling this feature.
but the problem still is alive and restrict me just to switching between apps which is not comfort.
How can i make windows 8 show this when clicking an item, i could not find a simple option unless i am loosing my vision
View 5 Replies View RelatedIn File Explorer the preview window box is checked and thumbnails box is checked, but I can only preview image files. Word or Pdf files do not show up. I did a factory setting reinstall of Windows 8.1. My word documents showed up in the preview window prior to the reinstall, but not my pdf files. I use this feature frequently.

Have a new Windows 8 Pro setup. For some reason I do not get a preview of images in a folder just a generic thumbnail.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI often unzip compressed folders sent to me by email containing several pdf files. When opened in file explorer the preview pane is blocked.
I have to right click and select properties, then click unblock button individually on each file if I want to preview them in the preview pane.
Any way I can set an option either to not automatically block these files when transferred from compressed email attachment to the folder?
Or any way I can use the parent directory and unblock all the files in all the subfolders at once?
I went from XP to Windows 8 Pro. With XP, a pictures folder allowed the icons to represent a small version of the picture; the filmstrip option was a nice bonus.
With Windows 8, the icon, no matter what size, has a generic look to it--same for all the pictures. I enable Preview Pane, and the same thing happens. No preview of the picture on the preview pane, just a much larger generic icon.
I see screen views on the web of it actually working, but I can't get it to.
Is it possible to sort a folder's contents with both File names and Sub-Folder names intermixed? I have projects in sub-folders, and 'support' files like this:
projabc (sub-folder)
projabc.txt (file)
projabc.bat (file)
amongst other projects. I would like all the 'projabc...' items to appear together.
Windows 8. My custom cursor, when i point to text or links the cursor changes from custom to a hand. Windows XP the cursor stayed as is the custom cursor. Is this normal for Windows 8 for the cursor to change like that, or can I change something??

View 4 Replies View RelatedSince 2 days ago I've noticed that I cannot create a new folder with File Explorer by any way possible. Using the taskbar or the SHIFT + Ctrl + N. Even when saving projects with Save File as... and trying to use the "New Folder" text string button does not create any folder. Using CMD prompt or powershell all works well as with Total Commander which i only installed to see if it could create folders and it does. Other programs that auto create folders also works well (i.e. Foobar when transcoding to new unavailable folder). My Windows 8 Pro is original, it's a 4 month old install, I've not made any customizations, no registry hacks, Windows is bare apart from Classic Shell which i only use now as a custom button to go to start screen with the mouse. I also made a custom High Contrast Theme that i use at night or when eyes are a bit tired. It's 2 months old so it's there long before the problem.I've not installed any new programs in the last week apart from some updates from FileZilla, Foxit pdf and Notepad++.Last system update is COPICOM from 13 July.I followed this guide which as not resolved the problem: I cannot find a way to create a new folder in Windows 8. -

I found this solution, You cannot back up a file in Windows Server 2008 R2 or in Windows 7 if the path length is longer than 260 characters but it is only for previous version of Windows OS. How to fix this on win 8 x64? The file sysytems on both HDDs are exFat.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy laptop is top of the range spec one with Core i7, 8GB RAM, Dedicated GPU, every thing else work super fast, i am very annoyed by this one problem which i have been observing When ever i create a new folder/file or download a new file or rename a new file it does not immediately show up, if i try to open the renamed file it says windows cannot find that file (because its actually been renamed but does not yet show up in the folder), Every time i have to press F5 to refresh the folder or the desktop so the computer refreshes and shows the changes made (i.e new folder, renamed folder, new file etc...)
Is there a way so computer immediately shows the change rather than me having to close and open that folder or refresh the page every time i rename or create a file ?
So i'm trying to delete this file i have in my downloads folder, which is a normal .avi file. however, this file is really broken, it wont delete. I suspect this file makes my folder not showing thumbnails and acting slow and sometimes wont show anything at all, just a loading bar thing.
i tried deleting with cmd prompt, while explorer.exe is off, but command prompt stops responding.
i tried searching the folder for viruses, finds nothing.
i tried downloading Unlocker to delete it, but ends up with unlocker stops responding.
i tried quarantine the file, it gets into quarantine in NOD32 but the file is also still in my download folder, and NOD stops responding.
i get no message at all trying to delete it, it's just that nothing at all happens.
What is wrong with this file?! It plays fine though, just like a normal .avi file. Is there anything else i can try? cmd prompt and NOD32 don't get the windows "has stopped working" message, they just stop responding to me clicking any button in NOD32, or writing new text in cmd prompt. i can exit them as normal.
I have only been using windows 8 for a few weeks and I am still getting my head round it. I have copied some documents from my old laptop onto my new one and have notice that most of the files are now all mixed up. I am trying to drag and drop them into the order in which I want them set out, for example my bank statements, utility bills etc are no longer in date order. I have tried to do it from the drop down box which says descending, ascending, date etc, but they are still all mixed up. Is there a way to drag and drop a file so that I can slot it into the place I want it to be, like you can with photos in Picasa, there doesn't seem to be a drag and drop in windows 8 (or am I missing it somewhere along the line)?

I have an external HD connected to my Windows 8 machine. It's split into 2 partitions with lots of files and folder on each. On one partition while in Windows Explorer the "New Item" option only has "Folder" as one of it's items. Same if I right click, "Folder" is the only item. On the other partition "New Item" shows a list of items including text file, bitmap file, shortcut etc. Something happened recently as I have text files I've created since a few weeks ago. Also, if I create a new folder, while in that folder the "New Item" shows the list of items text file, bitmap file, shortcut etc. How to change this?

I don't want to discuss the specifics why but basically I don't want to use my left hand at all sometimes during certain web browsing sessions.
How do I browse through internet web browser tabs with just right hand mouse? Without having to click on each tab. I just want to use either a button, scroll wheel, or an extension/add on that will make scrolling through tabs only right handed.
except it works in 32 bit but not in 64 bit windows 8.1 update fresh install. Have checked the apps notification switches in PC settings and they are all on. The one I miss is the email notification telling me I have mail which appears to be enabled but test messages from gmail dont trigger notifcations in right hand top side of desktop.
One notification that does work is when I insert a USB it asks what to do with removable devices but thats the only notification I get.

Opening a folder in file explorer often shows it empty when I know it isn't! Also if I try to delete the "empty" folder, explorer reports it has found x number of files and is preparing to delete! If I quit that and look in the folder there are the files.
I also have issues with file explorer opening a folder and apparently scanning the contents - a green bar very slowly creeps across regardless of how frequently I've looked in the folder earlier in the day.
I have six drives mostly pretty full with a mixture of thousands of small files and thousands of very large images. Windows 8 file explorer seems to have problems coping.
when my windows 8 starts up it always opens a personal file folder..how do I stop this?
