Jul 13, 2014

I've been trying a couple of times to upgrade from 8 to 8.1 but every time I try to upgrade it via the STORE, it says that I dont have admin rights even though im the admin. I checked other sites and it says that I need to uninstall a certain file but the file is not present in my laptop.

Gain Full Admin Rights / Privileges?

Currently still on RP x86

My issue is I receive these even though I'm the only Admin on this laptop.

Is there any to circumvent this so it never bugs me about these confirmations again?

Lenovo Z580 Asking For Admin Rights All Of A Sudden

Mar 24, 2013

Heres a little about my setup:

Lenovo Z580
Windows 8 Pro
1 single HDD split into 2 partitions, 1 for windows / program files, the other (data) for my data / downloads etc.
1 User account (administrator)

This began happening about a week ago, i first noticed it when i tried to download a file via Google Chrome, when i tried to save the file to my HDD (a 2nd partition on my disk) chrome told me I don't have permissions to save to this folder and that i should try to save it to user/downloads/ instead.

Since then I've found I am no longer able to write to that partition without either being prompted for elevated privs or being denied totally.

For example:

Download a file from the internet with chrome/firefox/IE
Extracting rar/zips files via right-click (i have to open them in winrar, and extract manually)
Create a folder in explorer: "Destination folder access denied", "You need confirm this operation"

I have UAC Settings are set to "Never Notify"

I've tried taking Ownership of every file/folder on my data drive
I've uninstalled all software (there where 3 applications installed since this started happening)
I've removed all windows updates since this started happening

Now I've ran out of things to try...

Accounts :: User With Admin Rights Can't Run As Administrator?

Jan 9, 2014

Windows 8 pro: I have a user account with admin rights. It used to work fine till one day, after rebooting, I had no tiles in the start view. I ran chkdsk and it seems to have fixed the problem but now when I run any application as "Run as administrator" I get: Windows cannot find '[The exe]'. Make sure you've typed the name correctly, then try again.

If, however, I run the same app as normal and it works - thus the exe exists and there is no problem with the app itself. (Also check in the file system)

If I create a new user with admin rights I get the same issue.

(The other old user with admin rights are working fine.)

Win 8.1 - Running App In Guest Account Which Requires Admin Rights

Feb 17, 2014

So on Win 8.1 and have a portable app I want a guest user to use but it asks for password every single time.

1. Is it possible to change the permission somewhere so it wont prompt a password?
2. If no the above, is there a third party app that can be used to give a specific app admin rights/or remove admin rights from it?

Accounts :: Unable To Give User Admin Rights In Windows 8.1

Dec 30, 2013

After upgrading Windows 8 to 8.1 - my standard user does no longer have administration rights.

in computer administration ->local user and Groups - the properties for the user shows that the user belongs the Group administrators.

However when I access the user account in the control panel the user shows up as "standard" and I cannot change that while logged in as standard user.

I have tried logging in as Administrator (using the built in administrator) - but here I am also unable to change the setting of the standard user from "standard" to "Administrator" - the "change account type" button is greyed out and cannot be clicked.

I have tried everything I can think of, read all I could find on the net - but to no avail.

Windows 8 - Need Admin Permission After Upgrade

Dec 15, 2012

I'm stuck. I ran Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant prior to installing Win 8. According to the report I needed to delete Intel(R) Pro Network Connection 12.1.12, which I did.

I upgraded to Win 8 but now I have no permissions. I'll looked at all the threads about opening a cmd windows, which I can, but since I logon to the O/S with just user level permissions I can't issue any admin level apps. I can't even navigate to my C: drive. I get 'Access is denied'.

I'm tried right-clicking on the Command Prompt and 'Run as Administrator', nothing. Which makes sense since I'm logon on with only User rights.

I need full admin rights. I can't update my HOSTS file which really screws up my FTP and Telnet sessions.

I cannot logon as administrator, so I can't change anything. Should I reinstall??

Accounts :: Dell Laptop Running Windows 8 - Cannot Access Admin Settings

Jun 15, 2013

I have a Dell laptop running Windows 8. It is 3 months old.

I have lost my admin rights to the computer - I cannot make changes. Therefore, I cannot do a system restore.

I tried booting up in safe mode and turning on the admin rights via command prompt and typing "net user administrator /active:yes". It tell me 'access is denied'. I think it said "error code 5".

It may or may not be coincidence but I had installed Classic Shell a week before this problem occurred.

Dell :: Cannot Get Administrator Access To Download Windows 8.1 Upgrade

Jan 26, 2014

I have a new XPS8700.  I have been unable to download the Windows 8.1 upgrade from the MS Store.  My first problem was a lack of Windows updates, which I did, and now I can see the 8.1 upgrade in the store.  I can also download updates to other aps.

My remaining problem is a continual notice every time I hit download that I need to first log into an account with admin access.  Best I can tell, this and other forums have shown me how to add Admin capability with the Command prompt.  I even created a second account and did the same thing.  Within the User Summary screen within control panel, both USers show "administrator".  Yet I still cannot get access

I have tried "net user administrator /active:yes" as well as tried same with swapping my name for administrator

The actual "administrator" user cannot do anything within the App Store.  That appears to be what is supposed to happen.

Hardware Drivers :: What Is Needed To Upgrade A Dell Dimension 8300 XP To 8.1

Apr 20, 2014

Dell true to form has made the cmos non-upgradeable for use with Windows 8. So, with regrets, I need to know what motherboard, cpu and sound cards, memory, etc, I will need in order to upgrade this elephant.

Then of course, I need to know if my graphics card, NVIDIA GeForce 6200, power supply 250W, etc are sufficient. The power supply is welded to the frame of the box, so will be a pill to change out. I also need suggestions on which Sound card, since there isn't one now. It too is part of the motherboard.

I guess I should also ask if this upgrade is even possible. Is WIN 8 backward compatible with xp software?

Dell :: XPS430 - Windows 8 Upgrade Hanging On Clean Install

Dec 9, 2012

I installed W8 successfully about a month ago and all went well. The only recent change I have made is to install Startmenu8 to get a more normal Windows look. Last weekend my computer screen went dark blue and the mouse seemed not to function. I changed batteries and rebooted. However all I got was my desktop with no task bar and no icons. The programmes showed up along the bottom but would not open maximised so I couldn't use them. I have run the diagnostics on F12 at start up. All was ok according to that. I wanted to restore to a previous point so I managed to boot from my CD drive with the recovery disk (W8 version) but it said that both my restore point and image wouldn't work. I therefore tried to do a clean install of W8 but that wouldn't work. It just hung after several hours. I tried the same with W7 but with the same result.

My machine came with Vista so I installed that from the Dell recovery disk. This worked. I then tried to upgrade to W7 SP1 (an upgrade which would never install back in the day) from a CD I downloaded off the Windows website. That went on all night with the machine interminably rebooting. Still hung this morning. So I reinstalled Vista as above (clean) and tried to install W7 from the original upgrade CD. This hung also. The reason I haven't gone straight to W8 is that I think I have an image from a few months ago before I upgraded to 8.

I've just started restoring from a reasonably W7 image in Vista. Cross fingers but it seems to be working. However, I wanted to do a clean install and wonder why neither W7 nor 8 would complete.

Dell Studio 1535 Laptop / Windows 8.1 Upgrade Failed - How To Diagnose

Sep 2, 2013

Upgrading from Windows 8 ProWMC on a Dell Studio 1535 laptop. It ran for a couple of hours and was in the 'a few more things' stage when it decided to fail and roll everything back.

Now that it's back where I started, where do I start looking to try to find out what happened? I'm hoping it put some log files somewhere.

My first guess is that it's third-party drivers, will start by looking at those. There are several things which are old but still were working with Windows 8; I suppose one or more of these might not be compatible?

Setup Installation :: Performing Clean Install Upgrade On Windows 8 Dell Laptop

Sep 15, 2014

I have a Dell Inspiron 15R SE 7520 laptop that came with Windows 8 Core edition pre-installed. This laptop has never worked properly for some reason. It won't shutdown the normal way (it'll just stay on the shutdown screen forever) and it never comes back from sleep without a BSOD along with other troubles that haven't been solved by updating drivers, etc.

I decided I want to do a clean Windows 8.1 re-install and upgrade on my laptop to get rid of these problems, but it's been ages since I last did this (back in Win2K times, I used to dual boot Slackware Linux) and I've bee reading about all this UEFI, Secure Boot, etc and quite frankly it's making me quite nervous. I was even planning on taking this chance to dual boot some linux distro, but it looks sooo difficult. Things are much more complicated these days for the tinkerer!

I need to make sure I can get back to a running system quickly.

For starters, here is how the hard drive is partitioned: [URL] ....
And this is the Diskpart output : [URL] ....

Why do I have 5 partitions? I understand the recovery partition, the OS partition and (after lots of reading) the ESP partition, but I'm not sure about the others. What do I need to keep? I've been reading around and I see some people recommend wiping the whole drive and starting from scratch. Is this a good ide?

I'll create the installation media from a windows 8.1 MSDN ISO using a USB drive. When I start the installation process it will ask me where I want to reinstall it to. Do I just choose the OS partition? Won't the recovery partition be based on a Windows 8 image and be useless from now on?

What's the best way I can get back to a fully working system in case I screw up somehow? I've made an image of my drive using Macrium Reflect free edition. But I read here that I cannot make an image of a GPT disk. Will this image I made work for getting back to a working system quickly in case I screw up?

As a last resort, I've made a Recovery USB using the Dell Backup and Recovery Method. In the extreme case that I screw up real bad, will this work to get back a factory-state system even if I've wiped my hard drive clean? I'm assuming this tool is for users recovering after a dead hard drive so it should work , right?

Dell :: Store Does Not Recognize Administrator User Account When Attempting To Upgrade From Windows 8 To 8.1

Feb 8, 2014

I purchased a Inspiron 17 7737 directly from [URL] on 12/5/2013.  It was delivered on 12/182013.  It had Windows 8 as the operating system.  I had assumed that it would have the latest version of Windows when it arrived since 8.1 had been issued in October. I opened the Store app and the upgrade to Windows 8.1 was not available to me.  I understood that this was a problem for others and did not pursue it further at that time.  I was out of town for 2 weeks in January and did not use the laptop during that 2 week period.  When I returned, I opened the Store and found prominently placed the invitation to the free upgrade to 8.1. I was signed in using the Administrator account and when I hit the download button for 8.1. I was given the message "You need to use an account with Administrator privileges to install Windows 8.1, try logging in with the user account of an administrator of this PC and try update again".

I verified that my account had Administrator privileges and tried again and got the same message. I created another user account and gave it administrator privileges and tried the download again signed in on that account and got the same message.  I called technical support and for over 5 hours over 2 different days, the technician attempted to resolve the issue by uninstalling and reinstalling Windows updates. When that failed to resolve the problem, he "refreshed" my PC which, I understood put it back to the status it was in at time of delivery. He then had to do all the Windows updates (approximately 65) and tried to download 8.1 again.

This did not change the error message when trying to download to 8.1.  At that point, I was told that they were elevating it to a technical team who would research all the logs from my machine and come up with a solution.  They indicated that they would call me back when a solution is found. Although my Administrator account was not recognized when attempting to do the 8.1 download, it recognized the Administrator role when the technician needed administrative approval to do all the uninstall and reinstall activities when trying to resolve the issue.

Administrator Rights Error Messages?

Mar 24, 2014

Win 8.1 Pro x64, single-user computer. I don't know if it started with updating from 8 to 8.1 in December, but roughly since then I've getting been a fair number of error messages while saving or changing a program's default setting, saying directly or indirectly that I need administrator rights to do the operation. My user account is Standard and shows me as Administrator, and everywhere I look says I am Administrator with full administrator rights. Yet, as the screenshots below show, I now can't save to the system drive (C:) and can't even uncheck the default file manager setting within the XYplorer, my normal file manager. The other day I couldn't save an extracted folder under in its intended program folder in Program Files (x86), something I did numerous times with new versions of the same program under Win 8 and Win 7. What is the way to overcome this?
