Debugging :: Windows 8.1 - Sudden Shutdowns Without Warning
Nov 11, 2013I will be using a browser, or just typing an essay, nothing computer intensive and all of a sudden the computer will black screen and power down, and you can hear the power quickly drain from the computer as everything suddenly stops. I will turn it back and it will seem as if nothing has happened. Attached is the files I got from the SevenForums diagnostic tool.
Notes:
-According to Asus Live Update, Windows Update, and Intel Graphics Driver Update, I'm up to date.
-According to Avast Software Updater, I'm up to date on software (though I know that that only manages some software).
-Specs (just in case): Amazon.com: ASUS A55A-AH51-RD 15.6-Inch LED Laptop ( Red ): Computers & Accessories
-I do run computer intensive things on this dinky laptop (battlefield 3, saints row the third, arkham city, a minecraft server + mysql server at times, etc) and it does not crash (besides low on memory warnings).
-Running Windows 8.1
-Safeboot off (I was going to install linux mint, but decided to wait until the warranty runs out. Didn't feel like going back to turn safeboot back on, so I have to deal with the stupid watermark).

Apr 25, 2014 I received a supposedly Manufacturer Refurbished HP ENVY TS 15 Notebook PC that I bought on Ebay. Since then, I've had multiple different BSOD errors while performing different tasks or even when doing nothing. Drivers seem to be updated and I'm concerned that this could be a hardware issue.

May 12, 2014I am getting a BSOD since one week randomly with the message IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. BlueScreen Viewer showes me, that it is caused by the driver ntoskrnl.exe. Before I got this BSOD I updated my Windows 8.1 to Windows 8.1.1 . Since this time, this error happens randomly!
My system specs are the following:
Laptop: Asus S400 CA
CPU: Intel Core I5 3317 U @ 1,70 GHz
Memory: 8 GB
Graphics: Intel HD Grpahics 4000
Mainbord: Asustek S400 CA
Antivirus: Avast! Internet Security (Version: 140512-0)
Before I got this IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR _EQUAL error I also got the BSOD Driver_Power_State_Failure. I figured out, that it might be the Bluetooth Driver, as buescreenviewer stated the driver causing the error is btfilter.sys.

Sep 15, 2014I was working on my laptop on Tuesday and all of a sudden it blue screened with the following error:
system thread exception not handled athwbx.sys
I have tried to uninstall the graphics card as a lot of searches mentioned that this was a problem. I can boot the laptop to safe but cant do much else than that. I have also tried system restore but that fails as well.

Aug 1, 2014I got a new laptop, and pretty much immediately after initial set up I shut my laptop, the next time I tried to open it it showed the BSOD, it has the error,system_thread_exception_not_handled (iastora.sys). After it does the restart my computer runs fine. I followed the directions and included the file.

Jun 18, 2014I've recently upgraded my motherboard, processor and RAM to an ASUS Z87-K, Intel i5-4670K, and Corsair XMS3 1x8GB, and ever since I have been experiencing what appear to be video card related crashes. I am using a Zotac Geforce GTX 560 AMP, and a Corsair 750w PSU and did not have issues before the upgrade. The computer will crash to desktop while playing high performance games, sometimes almost immediately, sometimes after an hour or two. This results in an event log message like this:

This is bad enough, but I have also been receiving BSOD in more sever cases. My dump files are zipped and attached here.
In my troubleshooting to date I have:
- started upgrade from clean Windows 8.1 install
- checked all my power supply settings,
- checked all internal connections
- made sure the RAM was running at the appropriate frequency and power settings
- updated my BIOS and all my drivers manually, included several clean driver installs for my graphics card
- conducted Windows Repair
- checked the temperature: CPU less than 40C, GPU a fair bit higher in mid 70's
- tested memory for damage, came back clean
- ran dskchk, came back clean
- ran dxdiag, says there are no problems
Note: I've been using Shogun 2 to run tests, but it happens on every game I've tried (Arma 3 and Planetside 2 through Steam, and FarCry 3 through Uplay)
My next step will most likely be another complete format and reinstall, and then if it still remains I would have to assume my video card is shot, a horrible coincidence that it happened right when I upgraded everything else.

Jun 15, 2014I have this problem with my laptop for a week ago, I purchased this laptop (hp pavilion dv6 2170ee) 4 years ago. Now I'm currently using Windows 8.1 PRO on it. I recently upgraded my RAM from 4 GB to 8 GB (a year ago). I'm using this laptop for work purpose, graphics like 3ds max, Photoshop and Autocad.
Well the problem started by getting a lot of unexpected shutdowns with BSOD with random errors ..

the memory management error & IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error are the most appearing , although the memory management is the #1 error happens. This leads me to test my RAMS , I ran a memory check (windows memory check & bios memory check) both gave me no errors. I even replaced my RAMS with the ones which originally came with the laptop, same errors happened again. I tried booting in safe mode, at that time no errors occured , I though it might be the drivers , I uninstalled the graphic driver and restarted the system everything was fine until I tried to install windows updates, OS asks me to reboot ,after that system started and I didn't touch even the mouse ,it crashed with errors again

Mar 2, 2014I have replaced every piece of hardware on this build and I cant get rid of the memory management bsod. It happens randomly. During games, installations, boot up, basically whenever it feels like it. I tried a different HDD as well. SSD and standard gives the same result.

Feb 10, 2014I have upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 about a year ago or so. When Windows 8.1 was released I upgraded again. But ever since I upgraded to Windows 8 I sometimes get BSODs, and after to uprading to 8.1, I get BSODs several times. My computer boots, everything is going okay until I log into Windows.. after 30 seconds the BSOD hits. That happens 5 or 6 times and then everything works just fine. I have a Intel i5-2320 quad core 3.0 GHz processor, 4 GB RAM, 64 bit.. Also it's a Lenovo All in one PC. There's more info in the folder I uploaded.

Mar 15, 2014I have started having BSODs since last week. They seemingly seem to occur at random after using my computer around an hour. My computer is 2 years old, and I have never had problems with it, nor have I made any changes in the last weeks.
I have run chkdsk on both my drives, and they do not have any problems. I have also run a memorycheck (3 runs) and everything seems to be fine there as well.
After the first BSOD last week, my computer did not want to start up anymore, since for some reason my SSD was not the designated boot drive anymore. After changing this back it starts though, only to crash after a while again.
I have used the SF Debug tools, since my computer for some reason does not create dumpfiles in the designated folder.

Aug 17, 2014I bought a brand new PC and mostly during gaming but not always, sometimes with just even something such as Skype open my PC crashes with WHEA Uncorrectable Error and then restarts.

Sep 15, 2014I am having trouble with system stability playing games. I suspect it's overclock related, but I've fiddled with so many settings and can't get it to stay stable. I have looked through the logs some, but I don't really understand what I'm looking at.
Is there somewhere else I can look for a guide to understanding the info that the SF Diagnostic Tool compiles?
System info:

Other things I've done:
-Stress test with AIDA-64 - no trouble, can run for hours and hours. Highest CPU temps under stress ~74C
-Run Memtest86+ for 10 passes - no errors
Run graphics benchmarking/ stress testing with no problems (Furmark, Unigine Valley/ Heaven)
Monitor temps on everything - CPU never goes above 75C in stress testing, mostly averages mid 60s during stress testing, low 30s at idle, and 50s gaming. GPU stays very cool, never surpassing 70C even in extended stress testing

Update drivers to most current manually
The BSOD problem occurs usually after about an hour or so of gaming, sometimes less. I never get a BSOD with a message, just a stutter, then blue screen usually with a buzz coming through the speakers, then a forced restart. I can reproduce it if I run AIDA-64 and add in GPU stress test along with all the others or even if I run AIDA 64 with regular stress test and the run something like Unigine Heaven concurrently. Doing that usually produces the crash within several minutes. Event logs from the restarts always show error 0x124.
Another (unrelated I think) problem I recently had was with high latency producing audio stutter (usually with music, not noticed during gaming). I fixed this when I was going through all my drivers and updating. It seems like it was a problem with my NIC driver.

Jul 21, 2014Today I purchased a Dell Inspiron 3000 series laptop, running Windows 8.1 Update 1 64-bit. However, whenever I shut down or reboot, I get a BSOD with the error, DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE. Strangely, it only occurs when I am running on battery power, and after the up time of the machine is 7 minutes. If it's plugged into AC then I don't have any issues.
The minidump shows that the problem seems to be caused by NTOSKRNL.exe.

I dont know what to do, i dont know if it is a hardware problem or a software problem, ive run RAM and HDD tests and passed both. And everytime i get blue screen,the bios reverts to some old settings ive had.

Apr 12, 2014Randomly today my computer decided it did not want to boot. It originally had a different error code, but I found a tutorial on how to fix it, I followed the tutorial and my problem stayed the same but my error code changed. Basically something is wrong with my boot sector.
The initial code was 0xc0000225 and I used this tutorial to solve it: Solution to your PC needs to be repaired Error code: 0xc0000225
After that I got the new error: 0xc0000001. I have tried rebuilding the BCD, I have tried fixing the master boot record. I even started to go as far as to do a system "refresh" but windows told me that the HDD was locked and I have to unlock it to do a refresh, which Id much rather not do. When I tried to rebuild the BCD it detected my OS but when I told it to add it to the boot list it says "The requested system device cannot be found".
The weirdest thing is everywhere I look I am told to use the windows startup settings but they are totally missing from the menu. I booted to my bootable Windows 8 64 bit flash drive, selected repair my computer, then selected troubleshoot and advanced options and the only things that are available are system restore, system image recovery, automatic repair and command prompt. right under command prompt is where startup settings should be. I cant reformat because I have a lot of stuff that would take forever to get back like music etc.
Automatic repair didnt do anything. Safe mode does not boot either.

There doesn't seem to be any odd behaviour when it happens, for example it might be completely stationary (I'm not even doing anything on my computer), or I'm browsing the web. The only programs that are running at the moment are Google Chrome, Steam, AVG, dropbox, skype, google play and the AMD CCC.
The BSOD gives no extra information, because right at the moment the line where it should say what kind of problem it could be, the computer restarts immediately. I tried to look for the MEMORY.DMP file, but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Feb 21, 2014My computer Bluescreens very randomly without giving much information on what caused it.I can sometimes go a full day without a single bsod and somedays I get 10 within 30 mins. Only connection I've (maybe) figured out is that all these bsod's seem to happen when my comp is connected to internet and either downloading something or sending something. Like when I log into games and try to connect into a server i get bsod...or if I don't I can play that game for hours only to get the bsod when I quit game and return to desktop. Sometimes using chrome just to browse web or switching tracks on spotify can cause issues aswell.
My computer was first bought and build around 2012 with some upgrades such as more ram and new GPU. I've ran this comp with a stable OC of 4.0/4.0 and never before having any problems with either my system heating up or freezing. Now I've returned to stock clocks to rule out any unstable oc.
I'v done pretty much all i know about debugging and trying to figure out which programs/drivers/hardware are causing my system to be so randomly unstable. My head keeps telling me this is some driver related cause it started what seems to be "all of a sudden"
Things I've done:
Return stock OC
Ran memtest for 14 passes = 0 errors
Ran Prime for ~4 hours = 0 errors and temps maxed at 60 c

Feb 1, 2014I've been working on my mothers laptop and she has a HP Pavilion G6-1C51NR. She told me her laptop was a bit slow, so I decide to upgrade her to Win 8.1 from Win 7. I did a fresh install of Win 8 then updated to Win 8.1, now here is the weird part. Every time I boot the Laptop I get the Kernal Data Inpage Error once, then it restarts itself and it normally boots into the OS and I am able to use the laptop fine. This never happened when she had Win 7 on her laptop, and she had no viruses either. It started to happen ever since I installed Win 8 to her laptop, it happened on Win 8 and on 8.1. I have even re-installed the OS multiple times to see if it fixes it, but nope still has the issue.

I tried to remove , but still the problem persists for me . What has to be removed further to make my computer work fine without any crashes.

Jul 4, 2014Everytime I turn off my system the normal way, the next time I turn it on, it boots twice before Windows logon display and, in the worst, a BSOD shows this message: "SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED" related with "iaStorA.sys"
I've already tried checking any problem with components of my laptop with Dell software and after hours of tests it doesn't found anything wrong, so I hope this is something with software and not a compatibility problem of the new HDD with my laptop at all.
