View 3 RepliesI have a game (ATCSimulator 2) that is not written for widescreen. The game tells me that in order to work in the mode I want the display must be set to a standard 4:3 setting. It gives the options of 1280x800, 1440x900 or 1680x1050. I tried to do this, but apparently my video card does not support any standard resolutions. I thought it might just show the screen stretched, but the game will not even go into the mode I want to use.
How I can change the resolution to display properly or possibly a workaround for this?
My video adapter is Intel HD Graphics 4000
Intel driver version 10.18.10.3277
15.6" display
Max Resolution 1366x768
Windows 8.1
I work and live in two different time zones. I'd like to display my home time zone, but my system time must be set to the network time and gets reset if I change it. I used to use the clock gadget in Windows 7 but Windows 8 no longer has it. I'm looking for a solution that is not invasive and hopefully free. I'm a programmer so I know a good deal about Windows, but I can't figure this one out. I am aware of the tool-tip time; its not what I'm looking for. I want to be able to check my time on the computer screen at a glance.

I am coming off Linux op system and am a bit lost. My latest endeavor is understanding the Windows 8 partitions.
I have a Dell Inspiron 5721, 8 GB memory, 1 TB hard disk, with Windows 8 O.S.
Looking at the partition display, I see the disk is divided into five partitions. The partitions are named:
"500 MB, Healthy ( EFI System Partition)",
"40 MB, Healthy (OEM Partition)",
"500 MB Healthy, (Recovery Partition)",
"OS (C:, 917.77 GB NTFS, Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)",
"12.60 GB, Healthy (Recovery Partition)".
All of these partition, except for the NTFS partition, are listed as 100% Free. The NTFS partition is listed as 88% Free.
Are these partition available for use, or are they being used for something(?).
I am working on the boot situation, trying to find out how to input from the cd/dvd writer, but have not over come the "Secure Boot" thing yet. That will be next on my agenda.
I am attaching a copy of the data partition scheme ....
I'm trying to delete all of my mp3s, but searching for them shows each file individually. Is there a way to get File Explorer to show only folders that contain mp3s?
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo I upgraded to Windows 8 today and finally finished all the installations only to find that using a 1920x1080 resolution means that the display is too big for my screen (a 32" Samsung full HD TV). The screen is cropped by about a half a CM all the way around. I had to revert to a 1776x1000 resolution for the display to fit properly on the screen but would much rather use the highest possible setting but I cannot seem to fix the problem.
I am running 64-bit and have updated all display drivers and completed windows updates. My GPU is an ATI Radeon HD 5800 series.
I am trying to find a way for the apps to open on my second display while keeping the MUI/metro up on the first(main) display. For example watch hulu/abc/media center app on my big screen while playing around in the MUI/metro ....

I just purchased a new windows 8 PC. I was attempting to hook the computer up to my tv through hdmi (the pc has no VGA input) and when I went through the normal paces to put the display on my tv (display desktop only on 2), the signal did not transfer and there is no display on either my tv or pc! how to revert the display back to my pc monitor without being able to see anything? Acer support was less than useful. It's an acer aspire z3-605 all-in-one pc.

At present I try to familiarize with Windows 8 with a new Toshiba Laptop.
There exists only one user with the name Helmut. I created a local account with the name "Helmut". But in the folder-display Computer --> xxx(C: ) --> users appear only the two folders "Public" and "TOSHIBA". I tried with execute --> control userpassword2 --> properties to change the name (from TOSHIBA to Helmut), but again in the folder-structure remains "TOSHIBA".
How can I change the display of this name to the name of the user (e.g. to "Helmut")? Perhaps in the registry? But where?
I have two monitors. Some of my programs can take the whole screen, covering up everything including the task bar. In W7, I just used the MS clock gadget which I moved to the second screen so I could always see the time. Now in Windows 8.1 Update, I can see all the apps that I've pined to the active task bar, but I don't see the system tray with the time to the right. Doesn't have to be the task bar, of course -- could be a floating clock in the upper right or left or anywhere you like.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just recently purchased the ASUS ROG G750JM-DS71. I noticed that I can't seem to the get the display to be in full brightness. For example when booting it up, the brightness seems much higher, and after a few seconds at the desktop the screen would suddenly get darker. The brightness is indeed all the way up, and my laptop is plugged in. BTW, it actually looks more orange instead dimmer, like the there is much less blue emitted light. how I can get rid of this setting or what could be causing this? The display does indeed change while at the desktop, so I know this isn't the highest brightness.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've just bought a Toshiba L855 with Windows 8 factory installed. So, I'm trying to learn two things at same time, Windows 8 and the laptop functionality. One of the details that I don't like is the automatic power on and boot up every time I open the display, regardless... may be useful for other users, but not me.
Although there is an option to disable that Panel-open/Power-on, still does it! The "disabled" status is there, but nothing changed. It keeps starting up.
I haven't installed anything yet to the PC until I'm really sure there is nothing wrong with the hardware, I hope is not a warranty issue.
BTW, I have two administrator users, my wife and I. We tried disabling that power up with each user logged and still won't work.
I've upgraded to windows 8.1 a few days ago through a custom install as I was running windows 8 x86 and wanted to switch to x64. I've also just updated the BIOS.
After the upgrade though, my laptop goes into sleep/standby and locks the screen instead of turning off the display as I have it set. So, if I edit any power plan settings to turn off the display after 2 minutes, it will go to sleep after 2 minutes.
I noticed that MS/Intel won't support my Intel 915GMA drivers and in the Windows 8 DP the surfing the web everything looked slightly too big and all the fonts look fuzzy. In the full version of 8 which I now have how is the text rendering on the basic display?

I am currently on Windows 8.1 Pro. The system is 32 bit and not running a separate display adapter, just the integrated Intel configuration. I have tried downloading the latest Windows 7 driver from the HP support page for the g60 but it didn't work. They don't offer drivers for Windows 8 on this model. I have also deleted the display in device manager, rebooted and let Windows find and install its own driver, but this also didn't work. Keyboard and mouse both have the box checked for allow this device to wake the computer in the power settings.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIn Win 8 Windows Explorer, the preview pane seems to be able to display previews of all file types I really use except the type I use most-- eml email files. Is it possible to get the preview pane to show a preview of an eml file?
I have noticed that if I simply manually edit an eml file's extension from eml to mht-- it will be displayed in the preview pane.
I have hundreds if not thousands of eml files saved to disk. I really don't want to change all of them to mht because that eliminates email functionality of the file. Meaning, I would not be able to double-click the file, open it and respond to or forward it as an email message.
So basically the other day i was trying to improve my ping for gaming by using youtube and changing settings in there registry , after i had made the changes no effect had been taking so i attempted to revert what i had done . Instead i have clicked the back up file of the registry i had exported and added it into my registry thinking it would replace , instead it had been added or duplicated into my registry . As i had been warned , but being unfocused and reckless i had pressed ok . After i attempted to restart my laptop the display would not work . My laptop would turn on and the power button would be on and after the Asus start up message " Persistance , Perfection , Innovation , blah blah " the display would go from black to a lighter shade of black and keep flashing . IT doesn't make it to the welcome screen , i can see my cursor for 5 seconds on one of the shades until it flashes back and forth .

I upgraded to Windows 8 from Win7 a few weeks ago. The display goes black after 60 seconds of inactivity no matter what setting I change. I would like to read documents without having to hit the space bar every minute.
My laptop is a Samsung Series 7 and requires Samsung Easy Settings to run the backlit keyboard. I've looked for a setting in the Samsung software, but don't think that is the problem.
I've also tried to adjust the power plan and advanced settings with no luck. My current power plan is set to Never on turn off the display. Adaptive brightness is turned off.
I upgraded to Windows 8.1 and all has been great except one thing. When I leave the computer for about 10 minutes or so, the display turns off like it is supposed to. If I want to turn the display back on though, I find I'm unable to with the mouse, keyboard, or power button. It's like it is stuck in limbo and I have to restart the PC.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy dell inspiron n5010 running on Windows 8, today all of a sudden started showing some grains on the display.Soon after it happened, it showed me a message which says
"Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restarts. were just collecting some error info, and then well restart for you (100% complete)".
The system restarted by itself and it started running system repair. The system repair screen is also grainy. After the repairing is done, it restarted showing Windows 8 logo(that too with grainy display). But nothing really happens after that and it its stuck. So I decided to switch it off and turn it back ON after sometimes. I did that and the PC booted with no issues with the display perfectly fine. But the same issue is repeating again and again and I will have to shut down the system for some time and then again turn it back ON to make it run normal.
I'm using a Windows 8 64-bit ASUS VivoBook S200E as home media centre. The player is MPC-HC and the Bluetooth remote uses mouse movements and keypresses to browse the playlist and control playback. It's working very nicely, except for one problem - the mouse pointer is never visible! The only way to activate it is by making gestures with the touchpad (or with a mouse). That means getting up which isn't what remotes are all about . The computer has a touch screen, but that isn't used and doesn't affect the mouse pointer anyway.
I've been told that this behaviour is a Windows 8 "feature" for touch screen devices - the device being in touch mode by default and not displaying the mouse pointer until pointer movement is detected. I've tried all settings I could think of but nothing so far has changed this behaviour. Just to be clear, we're not talking about "hide mouse while typing" kind of behaviour. In this case, when the machine boots up there is no cursor, and it remains invisible for ever, unless you move a touchpad or mouse.
Is there some setting or registry value I could modify to change this behaviour?
Alternatively, is there some script I could use to just jiggle the mouse at startup? I've used Windows Scripting Host for things like this before, but the SendKeys method seems not to support mouse control.
