How To Change Username In Folder Display
Mar 15, 2013
(The following terms are translated from German, but perhaps not correctly)
At present I try to familiarize with Windows 8 with a new Toshiba Laptop.
There exists only one user with the name Helmut. I created a local account with the name "Helmut". But in the folder-display Computer --> xxx(C: ) --> users appear only the two folders "Public" and "TOSHIBA". I tried with execute --> control userpassword2 --> properties to change the name (from TOSHIBA to Helmut), but again in the folder-structure remains "TOSHIBA".
How can I change the display of this name to the name of the user (e.g. to "Helmut")? Perhaps in the registry? But where?

I am unable to change any permission for any folder . every option that supposed to be available for setting the permission is gray out!! , for some of my files I see the owner is "unable to display the current owner". The problem is the same for every single folder and file. I checked other systems (friends laptops and desktops) and they are working just fine ! but I am just unable to modify any permission for any folder or file !! even I tried to change the owner but it didn't worked !

Just got a new laptop with windows 8, not familiar at all with the OS, but accidentally misspelled the account name. Obviously, this has little impact on functionality, but I would like to change the name so any files I have from my other computer get put in the proper location without having to correct the username typo when switching back and forth. Basically, how can I go about changing the account name on my computer. There are no other users, I just set it up today.

As in win7 I got a super admin account, and a normal working account. When installing win8 I had to enter the username of the administrator (mine), then I created my working account (also mine). To distinguish betrween the 2 I would like to call my administrator account 'administrator'.
How to change the username of the super administrator?

I do a lot of remote administration after hours and I often login as an admin user into client workstations to fix various issues. One thing that I do to eliminate confusion is to edit the registry of a Win7 machine and change the HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionAuthenticationLogonUILastLoggedOnUser registry value back to the user's username.
That way inattentive users don't keep trying their password with the Admin username when they attempt to login the next day. I see that Windows 8 has the same key, but changing that value doesn't appear to "stick". It appears to be overwritten when you logout/reboot/shutdown. I've also tried deleting the SAM entries in the same key, but that seems to have no effect. I've seen several posts on how to show all users or none on the logon screen, but I'm trying to minimize the changes that end users will experience (complain about). I'm also hoping for a solution that will work with both domain and non-domain joined computers.

When setting up Windows 8 64-bit Pro on the page titled "Sign in to your PC" I choose the sign into my Microsoft account as opposed to "Sign in without Microsoft Account". Big mistake. It created a username called dwmad_000 which is part of my email address used for that Microsoft account.
To amend this username to one of choice, I changed the name in my online Microsoft account and also from C.Panel created a local account. I now have both in Windows Explorer but the default one is always dwmad_000.
How to get rid of dwmad_000 or change it permanently to First Name Last Name and sycn the 2.

This is how I have come to best like displaying the Applications folder I keep on my Windows8 Desktop Taskbar. Listed in alphabetical order it's how I can pull or access anything I may want @ any given moment w/out leaving Desktop to look for something. I simply scroll up & down for the desired item & it saves changing screens to go get something. A few, like Weather, Calendar, News I'll usually keep sitting on the APP Bar @ the top-left of the Desktop.

I have win 8.1 pro x64. I want to know if I can change the display order of disks icons manually. Usually the c drive appears first (from left to right), second cdrom icon and next the external drives. Can I change that with drag and drop? (I remember that I can do it in Vista).

So, now if I want to ensure that I am looking at hidden files, or have insight into protected OS files, I can no longer open explorer, click on Organize and click on Folder and Search Options.
I've found I have to open File Explorer, click on the View tab, find the Options button dropdown, and then choose "Change Folder and Search options".
This came up because I was trying to add a new taskbar. I right clicked on taskbar, select Toolbars, and choose New Toolbar From here, I get the "old school" explorer view (from Windows 7 without the ribbon), but the option under Organize for "Change Folder and search options" is grayed out. I thought it was just a dialog box limitation of the add toolbar wizard, so i went straight into File Explorer and failed to find the option. I actually had to Google it and figure out where they now moved the option to within the ribbon.

In setting up a new Acer Aspire V I have managed to rename the default Pictures folder Documents and I now have two folders called Documents - see below:
I was trying to move the Documents and Pictures folders to DropBox (because DropBox is encrypted) in order to have all contents synced. I believe the problem may have arisen because Windows 8.1 (I upgraded from installed Windows 8 immediately after buying the PC and before the install of Office 365) may have put the Documents folder in Skydrive folder by default.
To complicate matters Acer also has some form of cloud storage that may be in the mix -the clear.fi folder below? It is worth noting that the two folders below appear in both Documents folders (above) even although one still had the old Pictures icon - see above.
Here is a shot of the folders currently in the relevant user folder:
Is there any way to unscramble this mess and get the folders to DropBox?

I just created a new mail account name@domain.com.
In the past, the folder/ost would be named name@domain.com.
Now, for some stupid reason, the name of the folder/ost is "D".
How can I change it back to name@domain.com?
Does imap & smtp have DIFFERENT ost naming schemes?

I have preinstalled Win 8 on new desktop, now upgraded to 8.1. When I first started setting it up and it required an account login, I didn't really realize that it was going to exist outside my computer. I used my full name and primary email account for it. Then, it set up a folder(s) under Users (using my name), in the file structure. When I copied over say "Documents" from my Win 7 machine, they now show in a path of: This PC / Windows / Users / (myname) / Documents. I will not be using "the cloud" for anything, and want to only have a local account with Admin Privileges and a local account for using 99% of the time. Hence a multi-part question:
1) If I make a change to my MS password, like setting it up with a non-identifying username/password with a Hotmail email (which I never use), how will it affect my docs/pics/music/etc that is under Users / myname? If I change the MS login to a LOCAL login, what effect would it have instead?
2) Is there a way to get (myname) out of the file structure and rename it something neutral, or will that bring chaos?
3) And, as long as I'm asking things...I created the new Admin-Account and Daily-Account, but it seems like neither of them can access anything. They just get "permission denied" - even on the Admin one. I set up a Hotmail account for them both, so they have MS logins as well. Can I just switch them to LOCAL logins as well?

I am installing the Direct Download version of Windows 8. As it begins to setup it goes to a screen named "What needs your attention". It says "The following things need your attention before you can continue to the installation". It goes on to say "Change the folder or file name of C:users on drive C:"
It gives me an option called "Open" which takes me to this C: drive. However, I cannot change the name of C:users. Not even with administrative permission.

I like the Metro app because it is the simplest to understand and I believe I do know *all* other ways to read SD card data into any folder I choose.
Autoplay has been properly selected. I put the SD card into the slot and immediately the files are read, but when they are selected and imported they end up in the default folder "Pictures." I really don't believe there is any way to change this folder if I insist on using the Metro app, but is there??

Customising user folder icons has always been a bit tricky. All user folders apart from the desktop and contacts user folders can be changed via the customize tab in properties when the user folder is accessed from my computer (i.e. not from the desktop).
To customise the desktop and contacts user folders requires a registry change. For Windows 7 this is explained here User Folders - Change Default Icon - Windows 7 Forums, and the necessary .reg files are also provided. This method actually worked for me too in Windows 8. However, after the newest updates, the icons I had added this way have disappeared, and so has the customize tab which I had added via the .reg files available on the page mentioned above. Repeating the reg change would not make a difference. The newest updates must have changed something in the Windows 8 registry to that effect (through those updates all other user folders also lost the custom icon I had previously added, but I was able to easily restore them, as the customize tab of these user folders didn't disappear).
Hence my question: how to now change the folder icons for the desktop and contacts user folders in windows 8?
Since all my other user folders are customised in a particular style, leaving the default icon for the desktop and contacts folders looks a bit weird...

I just got a hold of a laptop thats using 8.1. It acutally came with it, but I'm viewing that as a good thing, so I can get some experience with this OS. My questions is a simple one, is there any way to hid either your last name, or your username when logging into 8.1?
I'm not a big fan of my last name being displayed when I lock my computer, or log into it. I don't mind having on my microsoft account, I'd just rather it only show my first name.

When I created my User Account I named my Self Jack B..... (end of last name) It showed as JackB_000 for some reason, I thought it was because my Account name was to long. So I changed my full name into just my first name, the user account stayed the same, only changing to what I set in Metro and Start8 (Start8 is an alternative to Metro bringing back the start bar).

On three the User Accounts dialog box has the phrase, "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer." I have deselected that box and entered the passwords and now I log in automatically.
But on one computer in the User Accounts dialog box there is no phrase, "Users must enter..." and there is not box to deselect.

just yesterday I bought a new desktop PC which run with Windows 8.At my first startup of Win 8, the PC asked me a registration on Microsoft website and a creation of administrator account. When I did the second startup, Win 8 asked me to write the administrator password, but my password doesn't run, and also the PC's name is the same of my e-mail address and not the name that I had chose with my first registration. So I think I made some mistake during registration and also now for me it's impossible even know the e-mail address used for the administator account registration. On Microsoft's website I haven't found information for recover account name (the email) and password. Before switch off the PC for the first time, fortunately I created a second account (user) on my PC, so now I have the access to the PC only like user and not like administator. How I can solve this situation?I haven't an important file of software on my PC (because is new and I have not had time for install nothing!).

I have recently set up a Win 8.1 notebook and from a cold boot Win comes up with a confusion by showing part of my email address as user (a hangover from a MS account) but, after saying that the username is incorrect, then allows me to enter my local account / network creds.
I decided that, since the machine could go on the road from time to time, I would reintroduce the need for username and password. I would like to tidy up this mixed-up situation by having to enter my local account details and not have this 'error' message from dear old MS pop up. Having part of my email address appear on bootup is hardly useful in terms of security.

I had recently activated my Administrator's account on Windows 8. But I was tired of having to put in the password each time and I made it where it would bypass that by hitting the windows key plus the x key then clicking on the Command Prompt (Admin). I put in "control userpasswords2" and hit 'enter', then I unticked the box that says "Users must enter username and password to use this computer" then click apply and restarted my computer.
I need more privacy on my computer and I want to have it where people have to sign in with the user name and password to use my computer. But when I do all the same things and tick the box again that says users have to use the username and password etc... it doesn't seem to work. It still doesn't require my username and password.

He wants his user name to replace the "Home" user.
How to achieve this and hope this will not impact the already installed progs?
