I ordered backup DVDs on 11/11, but they still haven't delivered to my mailbox. In my email, it says they have shipped via USPS. There is no tracking number, though.
Is this just due to hurricane Sandy perhaps?
Looks like I'm not alone at least
I not recived My backup dvd of Windows 8 Pro yet - Microsoft Community
I created DVD and USB backups to my new Windows 8 Inspiron laptop; I needed to recover the next day, and the Hard Disk recovery partition and the USB were reported as corrupt! On a brand new system with a brand new USB stick!
On attempting to recover with the DVDs, after using the first one the Dell recovery program said 100% complete, so didn't even read the next 2. The recovery showed a "restart" button, and of course nothing happened!
I have very recently bought a Dell Inspiron 15z with the facial recognition software. Unfortunately, I can't find where to download it. Link to the download page?
I have a game that was written into 2 DVDs and when i want to install this game and insert DVD1 and begin the installation , after for example 10 min it says you should insert DVD 2 for resuming the installation.
I have an 8gig install file of a game(with iso format) so how can i write this into 2 DVDs that will install like my above example.
Every time I try to play any DVD in Windows Media Center, I get this error:
"CANNOT PLAY DVD : The DVD may be in use by another application. If all other applications are closed, the video resolution may need to be lowered or the display connection type may not support playback of the DVD."
I know the issue is not with my physical DVD drive because of the following reasons: I am presently dual-booting XP Pro SP3 and Windows 8 Pro with Media Center. The former can play DVDs just fine. VLC Player on Windows 8 can also play DVDs just fine.
I'm curious if there's any way to get this to work on Windows Media Center on Windows 8, then, because I paid for the upgrade from Pro to Pro with Media Center, after all.
Lenovo Y580 with a blu-ray reader/dvd burner. Running Windows 8.1. Read DVD's fine just doesn't want to burn them. I can't add data to a dvd, backup a movie, format a dvd. When trying to format a dvd I get the error, after the drive runs for awhile, "Cannot complete format".

I have 2 DVDs that I just bought and work perfectly on my old Windows 7 laptop. They don't work on my new Dell Inspiron 3520. I'm not using Windows Media Player, I know that can't play DVDs in Windows 8. I'm using PowerDVD, it came for free with my laptop. When I play my DVD it stops responding. I tried using VLC too, but it seems as if it's stuck at loading for 1 hour. I don't think it's a codec problem because both of these are supposed to come with the codecs. The software isn't corrupted since they can run other DVDs. I have updated my drivers. My DVDs work in Windows 7, so what is my problem?
I try to make a disaster recovery backup by Farstone Total Recovery. It consistently fails to start, the error message says that it cannot initialize VSS. It also says to run Chkdsk then try again, but then it's the same.
I've checked that Volume Shadow Copy among the Services is set to start 'Automatic' and is running.
EaseusToDo backup gives me the following error. I use security tab to allow access to everyone and still get this error. Can I run the backup in the built in admin account? I have tried system backup and Disk and Partition backup and get the same error message. This is an hd in an enclosure with a sata connection.
This works fine but my E: drive is in a docking station so I want to check that the docking station is connected (that is the E: drive exists) before running it. Is that possible?
Can I use the system backup I created in win7 to downgrade from Windows 8? I clean installed win 8 on my other laptop I didn't get the chance to get the win7 key because it came preinstalled. Or, is there any other way to get back to win7 without having to buy it.
A week ago or so I had a machine failure. I had all the documents saved. It took me quite a long time to get me up and running on another machine. At the moment I'm interested in finding out if there is a possibility to backup/clone a finished installed system to a usb(bootable) drive.
In case of failure of a machine a bootable usb drive would give the option of continuing the basic work. At least you could instantly communicate with clients and so on till the new machine is installed. My Mac friend uses Superduper. What are the options in Windows 8? What 3party programs would be capable to do that?
I am using ASUS (S550CB) and given installed win 8 at purchase time so, no cd,key&backup provided to me. And unfortunately i also didn't make the backup. And now a BCDBoot file is missing as a result at boot time a blue screen come.
But now i pressed the F9 at boot time so, a screen open in which option's are available to open windows(I think it is a safe mode) or to troubleshoot(for image recovery back up), I select image and it is saying that there is no recovery image in this computer add a cd/dvd for backup/recovery image.
So, my question is can i open the openwindows(Safe Mode)(pressing F9) and take a back up in my USB and then again to recover image. Is that possible because my BCD/Boot/ file is missing?
I have a the Dell 15R SE 7520 which came preloaded with windows 8 . Recently I upgraded to windows 8.1 . My questions are -
1. What should I create - a rescue disk or a recovery disk ? 2. If I create a recovery disk, will it recover my windows 8.1(not windows 8) in case my OS gets corrupted . 3. I also couldn't find the product key for my OS. So , If someday I have to repair my laptop using my recovery disk ,it will not stay genuine?
My mother bought a samsung notebook, which came with Windows 8 original version installed. There is a adhesive for windows 8 confirmation on it. I can send a video of it, but I wanted to change it to Windows 7, installed on my computer that I was used to. So, I made a backup of my Windows 7 and tried to install it on my notebook.
Unfortunately, I deleted all from the notebook and forgot to take the serial key or to change my partition table from GPT to MBR, so I can't install Windows 7.
I only want to recover my Windows 8 serial key, so I can re-install it , change the partition table to MEG and install Windows 7!
My dad recently had his old vista computer die. I decided (after another discussion here on the forums) that Id backup his old OS, move it to the new computer, and then upgrade it to the newer windows. The problem I am having is that once I got the backup onto a partition of the new computer it gets a 0xc000000f error so I cant boot into it and do the upgrade. I tried all the normal bootrec options (rebuildbcd, fixboot, fixmbr) but none of them worked and I ran a chkdsk. I tried putting in the vista install media to repair the OS so I could boot into it and do the upgrade but the vista boot disk didnt recognize the OS (I think windows 8 might have something to do with that).
I installed Windows 8 and noticed it still had a version of Windows 7 Backup & Restore.
When I installed Windows 8.1 RTM, it looks like they removed it. I've been using it on Windows 7 x64 for a while and it has saved my skin a few times.
I did a Google search and basically found that if you install Windows 8 first, then upgrade to 8.1 RTM, it leaves Backup & Restore available. I want to install 8.1 RTM directly, is there any way to install Backup & Restore or keep it somehow?
So far I've had a BSOD twice, once while windows was performing a back-up and the other I don't remember the conditions that caused it. Wasn't playing any games or running any applications that have a heavy load on the cpu or gpu. No updates available for anything or from manufacture.
I initially started a File History backup 6 days ago and when I open File History from the control panel it still says "Files last copied on 'and the original date'. I have set a daily preference for backing up so shouldn't the date change each day? When I click on the "run now" link a line appears saying "File History is saving copies of your files", but after about 10 seconds that line is gone and it goes back to "run now". So, it is not saving copies of my files.
I have a brand new Western Digital 3T My Book external hard drive that has the initial "File History" folder and backup on it, but if it's not going to update/backup and just stays as it, is it isn't going to be very useful.
Why won't it backup even when I click the "run now" link?
previously i was using windows 7 home basic 64bit OS. My battery used to give an average backup of about 2 hours. But since the time i have installed windows 8,it gives a backup of hardly an hour. I have checked all the settings in the control panel. They are all fine and proper. The fan keeps making a buzzing sound all the time, even when the CPU usage is low. This was not the case earlier. Also, my laptop is getting heated up more compared to before. What shall i do? What steps shall i take?
I am seeing some vague references to older Windows versions automatically backing up the registry at startup and saving the backup in some folder..
Any definite information about this in Windows 8, and where any such backups can be found? How and when is the Windows Registry backed up in Windows 8?
If Windows doesn't do it, could you recommend a tool that can do it in the background on a regular basis? I really don't trust myself with this anymore....
My prior pc had some major issues (win7) while I had an external WD backup drive attached. During my troubleshooting I had reinstalled win7 and hooked my backup drive back onto the system. At the time I had not taken the time to restore or take ownership of the backup drive/files. It ran fine for a while with backups occurring regularly when finally it had major motherboard issues at which point I gave up and purchased a new Dell PC with Windows 8 (one I'm using now).
After setting it up I proceeded to connect the external backup drive and restore the folder I really needed as it contained all the photos, files, music, etc from the old pc. After doing so I was able to open/view the files that were backed up on my old pc AFTER I had reinstalled win7 but could not view the older backed up files/images etc. I then used the take ownership steps in this tread but this did not appear to work either. When I attempt to open the restored files/folders from my prior pc that are older I only get a default image of the Windows 8 icon for that file. get access to all my backed up files?
For the first time, I decided to back up my C: Drive using the Windows back up image tool. I selected my internal D: drive as the storage target. The recovery tool ran, and ran, and ran. The "back up" portion of the event had finished, but the "create shadow copy" went on for a good hour before I aborted the activity. The tool window never closed. After a while I hit the "x" button, but the window remained open. I clicked the shutdown icon and selected "restart", the restarting screen came up and remained for another hour or so before I cut the power to my pc.
Immediate problem: Now, my PC won't boot up. It gets to the windows 8 icon and the spinning dots never stop circling each other.
Attempted remedies: If I disconnect the SATA cable to my D: drive, the pc boots up. I can then connect the D: drive as an external and it will load. I deleted the back up image folder and the .dat file that was created on it. These are the only 2 files I could see created around the time of the back up, with "show hidden files" enabled. However if I reconnect the drive as an internal, my PC still won't boot. I have tried reverting to an older system restore point, but this has not affected whatever is going on during bootup.
What has Windows Back Up image Tool changed that won't allow my D: drive to be connected during boot? How can I remedy this?
Probably unnecessary background info: Last week I decided to clean up my computer, do a fresh install of windows and create a back up so that I *hopefully* never have to clean from scratch again. I had to start by installing windows 7 from DVD. I kept nothing on my 60gb SSD C: drive. Fresh install. Run windows update, then upgrade to Window 8 via a code I got from the "buy win 7 computer and purchase win 8 upgrade for $17" promotion when win 8 first came out. I ran win update again, which bricked my pc with a corrupt update sending it into a continuous loop of "update failed, reverting to old settings" over and over. I reinstalled Win 8 and tried selecting different updates. After 8 or so selections, the list of 72 "required" updates disappeared, and I could finally upgrade to 8.1 After 3 days of these install shenanigans, and finally getting my personal necessity programs installed (chrome, photoshop, etc) I was ready to create a windows back up image. This brings me to the current scenario.
my D: drive is a 1TB MyBook HDD that I took apart and plugged in as an internal. 16 gb of ram, 3.8- 6core AMD processor.
I am trying to use Windows Backup in Windows 8 on my HP Envy h8-1414 to my external HD and I get a message saying something like, "Your last backup did not complete." The reason given is The Device is Not Ready or something like that. The error code is 0x80070015. Yet from the Desktop/Computer I can read and write to the external disk with no difficulty.
I don't want to go much further with the set up until until I can make a good backup.
Win 8x64. Just got a UAC flag that Windows backup app wasn't working (see attached). Looking at Windows 7 File Recovery in the CP, all it shows is "Backup or Restore Your Files" at top and the rest of the page, which usually has some choices, is blank. Never seen that before. Rebooted to be sure.
