Disable WiFi Auto-Join Unknown Networks?
Jul 3, 2011I've looked absolutely everywhere I can think of and I can't find a way to disable auto-joining unknown networks. There has to be a way to do it, otherwise that would be a huge security flaw. When in range of my own router or any other access point I have saved, it's fine. However, When I take my laptop elsewhere, it automatically joins unprotected networks, which I don't want to happen

I have the computer directly connected to my wireless router through an Ethernet cord. All other computers that are connected wirelessly seem to work absolutely fine. When i open up network and sharing center and try and run the troubleshoot problems I constantly get the following error message "windows could not automatically detect this networks proxy settings".

Sep 5, 2011I have a Lenovo ThinkPad laptop, with Windows 7 home x64. As soon as I turn my computer on and the system finds available connections, the system connects itself automatically to the first WiFi network it finds. Usually this would be my home network, which is fine. But occasionally, this would be my neighbor's unprotected network, which is not as fine.
Potentially, this could be a malicious network, monitoring my internet traffic, which is not fine at all. A possible solution might be to check upon system start that the correct network is used. However, if the connection is accidentally broken, for whatever reason, the system again connects itself to the next available network, which is again problematic. How can I stop this automatic WiFi connections?
No Networks To Connect To
Sep 28, 2009I have gone through most of the posts on this forum that talk about Networks and Connectivity, Homegroups connections, and nothing addresses this problem.
I have had Homegroup established on both my desktop and on my notebook both running Windows 7 ultimate build 7100 for months. Surprisingly; few days ago, my notebook ceased to see the Homegroup and my Network and Sharing Center says that the notebook is currently not connected to any network even though the notebook is connected to the network and can use the Internet.
Homegroup and public group and unidentified group all disappeared on my notebook but working well on my desktop. I have done all the suggestions on other posts (i.e. leave Homegroup reboot, establish new one, passwords) you name it, I tried them all. The groups do not show as you can see in the attached picture. I tried IPv6, I tried the Homegroup listener in the Services. I tried about everything.
Both desktop and notebook connect to my ADSL router wifi.
Has anyone been through this problem? Greatly appreciate your input.
- Edit: I found out that the PNRP service is disabled, normal, but it will not start, when I start it I receive "Access Denied" error. Any suggestions?
- Problem Fixed: I reinstalled Windows 7.
Can't Connect To Public Networks
Oct 11, 2011I am running an hp g4 notebook with windows 7 64 bit. I can connect to my home network just fine, but I am unable to connect to any public network. The networks show that the connections are available, but when I try to connect I either get a cannot connect error or connected but with no internet error. I have updated the driver for my wireless adapter (Broadcom 4313GN 802.11b/g/n 1x1 wi-fi) and tried resetting the winsock, dv4 and dv6 in ipconfig. No luck with either. The networks show as open.

Nov 16, 2009Went to the city library today - laptop wouldn't connect to any unsecured network. The library does not offer wifi, but you can detect 4-5 several unsecured networks nearby. I wasn't able to connect to any of them. One of them said "Public" - not sure who it belonged to - but the icon beside it was not the typical signal bars. Couldn't tell what it was - looked like maybe a LAN connection, three entities connected to each other. Haven't seen that in the network list before. I could connect to that one, but after a minute or so the connection was dropped.
I've never had a problem connecting to unsecured networks. In fact, I packed up from the dud library and went up the road to a neighboring town library and connected to their unsecured network just fine.
Any ideas why this happens?

Sep 6, 2012I have been having this problem for 2 days now. My computer was working fine, and I went to go do something, so I shut my laptops lid to put it to sleep. I came back about 5-10 minutes later, and it had a red cross on the network button, at the bottom right of my desktop. I tried turning the Wi-Fi on/off with F2 + Fn, but that didn't work. I have checked in device manager, and everything seems to be working. My wifi card is an Intel(R) WiFi Link 5300 AGN.
Currently running this on a Dell Studio 1557, with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I've had this laptop for almost 3 years now, and it has never been a an issue. I've tried restoring my laptop to a couple of days ago, but that has given me no results. I tried running the computer in safe mode with networking enabled. I enabled my wifi with the fn + f2, and I saw my wifi network. However, while it was connecting, the connection was lost again, and I'm yet to see it.
After disabling and then enabling the driver, it would show the network for about 20 seconds, then it would be missing. Now, I can't even see it at all. All my other computers/devices can see my network, and it can still connect with it's Ethernet port. This problem is really starting to be a pain, since my laptop is pretty useless if it can't have portable internet.

May 12, 2010brand new lappy. its the Acer travelmate 5740G fantastic specs - everything is nice and responsive, except that i can't connect my wireless at uni. the tech guy had a look at it and he can't figure it out either. we did everything, including shutting down (eventually deleting) the AV because of its firewall. we set up the network exactly as everyone else does (and it works for everyone else).
the computer keeps suggesting that we check the router (but the router works). i can get net through RJ45 no worries but... i want my wireless to work.

Jul 21, 2011I'm visiting my parents for the summer and I brought my laptop with me and the wireless was working fine for the first month or so. One random day it stopped working and will not connect. I called dell support and for some reason it just started working when I was on the phone with him, but for the next couple of days it would connect for awhile then not connect 15 minutes later. It's not the router because it won't connect to other networks, the dell support guy says its not the hardware (everything in the device manager says its fine also), It works when the ethernet cable is plugged in, I installed all the latest drivers for the network adapter (Intel Wifi link 1000 BGN), I installed a registry fix program and for a little bit it was working with some networks, but only limited access.

Jan 15, 2013I have recently run a virus scanner from mcaffee stinger. I had several virusus and it removed them. Although there gone I had just booted my laptop and it wont let me connect to the internet. It said limited access on the icon. I troubleshooted the windows network diagnostics and it said this. Problem found windows could not automatically detect this networks proxy settings. Whatever I try to run as administrator it will come up with an error saying
C:/Windows/system32/cmd.exe <-that was an example the name changes for different items.
I basically cant use it at all now. I go to the control panel and click right click properties to disable and it will come up with the same error. It also said windows has encountered an error saving the wireless profile specific error: the data is invalid.

Jan 17, 2012I have an Acer laptop windows 7, but Just recently (yesterday) a problem came up that at first I thought it was the modem but now I see the problem is my laptop. And basically when I run the windows network Diagnostics 3 problems come up:
1. None of the networks you have previously connected to are in range,
2. Problem with wireless adapter or access point, and
3. The default gateway is not available.
So I am not sure what to do?

If I right-click on any of those other 3 the only option available is connect and it seems they can't be configured, the problem with this being that if I left-click them the "connect automatically" box is always checked. If I uncheck the box, the next time I left-click that connection the "connect automatically" box is checked again. I am wondering if this is causing a conflict whereby Windows 7 doesn't actually connect automatically to any of them as they are all checked...? The only way to connect is if I manually click "connect"...?

Dec 16, 2011My computer has worked fine (relatively) since i built it in... 2007. Two weeks ago i stopped being able to use the wifi card on the computer. It kept getting an error saying it failed to start. Uninstalling the drivers/reinstalling/updating them didn't seem to do anything.Eventually I did a Windows repair, took the card out, uninstalled the drivers, put the card back in and it worked.The only side effect, is that my PC no longer remembers the password of the router. I have to double click my SSID each time and re-enter the password. Its getting kinda annoying. WLAN AutoConfig is running as an automatic start.
