Connect To Hidden Wireless Networks In Windows 7

Dec 1, 2008

Hidden wireless networks are those networks which do not broadcast their Network ID (SSID). While not that many people use such networks, it definitely ads a bit more security to have your home wireless network hidden from unwanted guests. In this guide I will share with you what details you need to know in order to connect to such networks and what are the steps for making a successful connection.

Unable To Connect To Adhoc Wireless Networks?

Apr 28, 2011

I previously bought a used laptop running Win 7 Ultimate which I am the administrator and for ages I have wondered why I am always unable to connect to adhoc wireless networks, connecting to wireless access points have no issue though.Connecting to adhoc networks always gives me the 'your network administrator has blocked you from connecting to this network' message. I recently found out, as below there seems to be a group policy set in place? Can anyone show me how I can disable this policy please, without having to reinstall windows 7 again as that would really be too much effort for me[CODE]

Laptop Cannot Discover / Connect To Wireless Networks

Sep 6, 2012

I have been having this problem for 2 days now. My computer was working fine, and I went to go do something, so I shut my laptops lid to put it to sleep. I came back about 5-10 minutes later, and it had a red cross on the network button, at the bottom right of my desktop. I tried turning the Wi-Fi on/off with F2 + Fn, but that didn't work. I have checked in device manager, and everything seems to be working. My wifi card is an Intel(R) WiFi Link 5300 AGN.

Currently running this on a Dell Studio 1557, with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I've had this laptop for almost 3 years now, and it has never been a an issue. I've tried restoring my laptop to a couple of days ago, but that has given me no results. I tried running the computer in safe mode with networking enabled. I enabled my wifi with the fn + f2, and I saw my wifi network. However, while it was connecting, the connection was lost again, and I'm yet to see it.

After disabling and then enabling the driver, it would show the network for about 20 seconds, then it would be missing. Now, I can't even see it at all. All my other computers/devices can see my network, and it can still connect with it's Ethernet port. This problem is really starting to be a pain, since my laptop is pretty useless if it can't have portable internet.

Background Info:
Model: Dell Studio 1557
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
WiFi Card: Intel (R)WiFi Link 5300 AGN
Antivirus: McAfee Total Protection 2011

Laptop Can Detect But Not Connect To Wireless Networks?

brand new lappy. its the Acer travelmate 5740G fantastic specs - everything is nice and responsive, except that i can't connect my wireless at uni. the tech guy had a look at it and he can't figure it out either. we did everything, including shutting down (eventually deleting) the AV because of its firewall. we set up the network exactly as everyone else does (and it works for everyone else).

the computer keeps suggesting that we check the router (but the router works). i can get net through RJ45 no worries but... i want my wireless to work.

No Networks To Connect To

Sep 28, 2009

I have gone through most of the posts on this forum that talk about Networks and Connectivity, Homegroups connections, and nothing addresses this problem.

I have had Homegroup established on both my desktop and on my notebook both running Windows 7 ultimate build 7100 for months. Surprisingly; few days ago, my notebook ceased to see the Homegroup and my Network and Sharing Center says that the notebook is currently not connected to any network even though the notebook is connected to the network and can use the Internet.

Homegroup and public group and unidentified group all disappeared on my notebook but working well on my desktop. I have done all the suggestions on other posts (i.e. leave Homegroup reboot, establish new one, passwords) you name it, I tried them all. The groups do not show as you can see in the attached picture. I tried IPv6, I tried the Homegroup listener in the Services. I tried about everything.

Both desktop and notebook connect to my ADSL router wifi.

Has anyone been through this problem? Greatly appreciate your input.

- Edit: I found out that the PNRP service is disabled, normal, but it will not start, when I start it I receive "Access Denied" error. Any suggestions?

- Problem Fixed: I reinstalled Windows 7.

Can't Connect To Public Networks

I am running an hp g4 notebook with windows 7 64 bit. I can connect to my home network just fine, but I am unable to connect to any public network. The networks show that the connections are available, but when I try to connect I either get a cannot connect error or connected but with no internet error. I have updated the driver for my wireless adapter (Broadcom 4313GN 802.11b/g/n 1x1 wi-fi) and tried resetting the winsock, dv4 and dv6 in ipconfig. No luck with either. The networks show as open.

Can't Connect To Certain Unsecured Networks

Nov 16, 2009

Went to the city library today - laptop wouldn't connect to any unsecured network. The library does not offer wifi, but you can detect 4-5 several unsecured networks nearby. I wasn't able to connect to any of them. One of them said "Public" - not sure who it belonged to - but the icon beside it was not the typical signal bars. Couldn't tell what it was - looked like maybe a LAN connection, three entities connected to each other. Haven't seen that in the network list before. I could connect to that one, but after a minute or so the connection was dropped.

I've never had a problem connecting to unsecured networks. In fact, I packed up from the dud library and went up the road to a neighboring town library and connected to their unsecured network just fine.

Any ideas why this happens?

Cannot See Any Wireless Networks

Oct 10, 2012

I've had my Dell M6500 with Windows 7 for 1.5 years now. My network adapter drivers are all up to date. I've never had any issue connecting to all kinds of wireless---airports, coffee shops, home, etc. The past weekend I was out of town and connected to the wifi at a McDonald's, no problems. When I arrived back home, my wireless connections list contained nothing but a Verizon mobile broadband connection. I have never used mobile broadband. Attached is a video of what I see.

Other various related details:

-When I troubleshoot, I am told to activate my mobile broadband connection.

-I have tried doing a system restore to a point well before my visit to McDonald's. No luck.

-I am not able to return to that McDonald's and try to reconnect to their wifi to see if still works.

-I have not tried connecting to another wifi network besides the one in my house since the McDonald's visit.

-I am still able to connect to the internet using an ethernet cable between my computer and cable modem.

-I am still able to connect to the wireless router using mobile devices and other laptops.

Windows 7 Can't See Any Wireless Networks

Apr 19, 2011

my connection to my work's wireless network was fine.

Last night, I installed driver software for my network card for my Ubuntu OS (dual-boot machine). Ubuntu and W7 are on separate partitions; I am not running Ubuntu inside of Windows. This morning when I came into work and booted into windows, it did not connect to the network. I have already updated the driver software through device manager (I already had the most current driver installed) and have downloaded the correct drivers from Dell's website.

I have also done a system restore to prior to last night's Ubuntu driver update. And that didn't work. At this point, I am connected via cable, but if I remove it, my wireless card will not see our wireless network. I have tried to manually create our network through the "Set up a new connection or network" with the correct SSID and security code, but that did not work either.

How could my work on the Ubuntu side have affected the performance of my network card or settings on my Windows 7 side? I can connect to a wireless network in Windows?

When I open up the list of networks in range and click on one of the other peoples networks the box saying "Connect automatically" is checked. But when I try to uncheck it it keeps coming up as checked again. I have also opened up network and sharing centre and opened up the list and made sure only my network is on the list.

Won't Detect Any Wireless Networks

Jul 14, 2011

I recently bought a TP-LINK TL-WN350GD wireless network card, inserted it into a PCI-E slot and installed the drivers, but can't seem to get it to work. It appears in Device Manager as 'Atheros AR5007G Wireless Network Adapter' and apparently 'this device is working properly', but infuriatingly it won't detect any wireless networks. I've tried using the drivers that Windows 7 installed automatically and also the drivers that came on the disk with it, but all to no avail. When I troubleshoot the card, I get the message that 'there might be a problem with the driver for the Wireless Network Connection 2 adapter', but this is all I can find. It's especially irritating as I picked the (admittedly lower-end) card because it's definitely compatible with Windows 7 (I already tried one which wasn't).My PC has Windows 7 64-bit, has an AMD Athlon 4600 dual core CPU and 2 gigs of RAM.

Wireless Networks Not Appearring (except One)?

Apr 28, 2012

I upgraded a Dell Optiplex machine that was running Vista to Win 7 (both 32 bit). That went swimmingly. However, when I now check my wireless networks, only one available network appears.there are 8-10 networks that show on two other machines in the same room as this machine. One is a laptop that I place right next to the Vista to 7 machine that is causing me the problem. It is possible that during the upgrade the Vista machine was connected via the one network that still shows. I don't know that for certain, or if it is even pertinent. However, that network is not properly secured. One of the other (i.e., missing) networks is the one this machine needs to connect to for security reasons. (We're in an office suite and the network that shows up is a master; one about which we have no say regarding its security.) That's why I have to make the other networks reappear.

I've looked at a bunch of other posts but don't see anything that seems to help with this issue. I don't know where to even start (other than I have rebooted; twice). I am suspicious of the Windows firewall but all other programs seem to work - except printing (I guess because that printer is wirelessly connected on that missing network).Anyone got an idea of where I should start or what I need to do to get this back to normal?

Dell Inspiron 14r Wifi Detects Networks But Won't Connect

Jul 21, 2011

I'm visiting my parents for the summer and I brought my laptop with me and the wireless was working fine for the first month or so. One random day it stopped working and will not connect. I called dell support and for some reason it just started working when I was on the phone with him, but for the next couple of days it would connect for awhile then not connect 15 minutes later. It's not the router because it won't connect to other networks, the dell support guy says its not the hardware (everything in the device manager says its fine also), It works when the ethernet cable is plugged in, I installed all the latest drivers for the network adapter (Intel Wifi link 1000 BGN), I installed a registry fix program and for a little bit it was working with some networks, but only limited access.

Windows Won't Detect Wireless Networks?

Nov 19, 2011

For the past few weeks I have been having problems with my HP laptop.

For starters my laptop will not restart. I try to restart it and it shuts down, but won't reboot all of the way. It gets stuck on the black screen you get just before the HP sceens comes up. So I have to press the power button ( after which I do, I get a loud POP sound before the computer shuts off ) and then turn it on again myself. Also, if my computer goes in to sleep mode due to inactivity, it will not wake up. I have to press the power button to turn it off, and then start it up again.

After this happens, my laptop cannot detect any networks. I have to unplug the charger, and then I have to take out the battery and put it back in before it detects networks.

I took it to best buy ( where I bought the computer and have a warranty at ) and they did a diagnostic test and determined that I had several viruses causing the problems. After paying 200 bucks they ''fixed'' my computer and I brought it home, only to have the same exact problems I was having before.

Unable To Find Wireless Networks

Since a while ago, I tried to connect my laptop to any wireless network available around my neighborhood, but I couldn't find any. I tried connecting with a DSL cable from my friend's Pc, but I couldn't connect to the internet. So i tried setting up a "Dial-up Connection" , I followed the instructions, i restarted my laptop, but didn't work either because I needed a password and username from the internet provider. After that, I tried to look for other people's wireless networks again, but this box appeared:"Not connected. No connections are available" I used the troubleshoot option at the bottom, but it said "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem". I tried turning off my Windows Firewall ("Home or work (private) networks" and "Public Networks"), but the problem is still going on.

Laptop Does Not Pick Up Any Wireless Networks?

Several months ago my computer stopped picking up any wireless networks. I can connect using an Ethernet cable and a USB wireless adapter. I have troubleshooted and removed my driver and updated software; I even upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 hoping that might fix the problem but it didnt. I am thinking it may be my internal wireless card. So you recommend going to a hotspot to see if I can pick up there? I would think I would have to do that considering the USB adapter picks up multiple wireless networks but my internal one picks up none so I think that already rules out my router being a problem.

Windows 7 Pro Wireless Networks 'unidentified'

Aug 17, 2011

My problem is that I work in a school and we have bought 22x Samsung N145 Plus Netbooks. They use Atheros AR9285 wireless cards and I'm having problems connecting them successfully under Windows 7 to my D-Link access point. The fact is that the security has been set to WPA, using AES. The laptops are the same and are connecting, but 9 times out of 10 they pick up an autoconfiguration IP of 169.x.x.x.I sometimes get one working, but never have more than one connect at the same time. I need it to just pick up my 'chads.internal' domain network but it rarely does it successfully. I've tried adding the settings manually, I've tried 3 different network card drivers for WLAN (latest out from the Atheros homepage, second latest as requested to be tried by Samsung tech support, and a version 8.x.x.x driver after reading that 9.x.x.x drivers are 'flaky'), 2 different wireless access points, and the next step that I'm trying is to see if Windows XP will connect!!! I really don't want to have to go down that route!
