Disable WiFi Auto-Join Unknown Networks?
Jul 3, 2011
I've looked absolutely everywhere I can think of and I can't find a way to disable auto-joining unknown networks. There has to be a way to do it, otherwise that would be a huge security flaw. When in range of my own router or any other access point I have saved, it's fine. However, When I take my laptop elsewhere, it automatically joins unprotected networks, which I don't want to happen

I have a set of PCs which if connected to a windows network will make all computers on that network default to ipv6 when resolving names. This happens even if IPv6 is unchecked, if the ipv4 binding is set above 6 in the advanced properties of the network card. If any of these PCs joins a network with a point of sale system (Aloha) that system develops problems since Aloha does not like IPv6. At all. All computers including the aloha terms are Windows 7, 32 or 64 bit. Reproduced this with different routers and network topologies.
For example, I take one of these particular PCs to my home network Prior to the terminal going onto the network
ping localhost --> 127.0.0.1
ping computername --> 192.x.x.x
After the PC has joined the network, just attached to the same router, not on the same workgroup, etc., now all computers on the network return
ping localhost --> ::1
ping computername --> 08fe:xxxx (IPv6 address)
ping computername -4 --> 192.x.x.x
ping localhost -4 --> 192.x.x.x
This behavior continues even without IPv6 enabled on any adapter on the network. When the PC is removed from the network, all other PCs continue with the new behavior. I have tried netsh winsock reset, net stop dnscache, netsh int ip reset.log hit, unchecking IPv6 in multiple places, ensuring binding order has IPv4 above IPv6 on all network adapters (none hidden) etc. It's like this PC infects other windows PCs with IPv6. I have not tried disabling IPv6 from the registry or by Policy in my lab but I believe I tried this on previous network with no effect.

Sometimes my friends connect their Wi-Fi device to my network. So how do I protect my PC and other devices against malware spreading via Wi-Fi? I use Norton internet security 2012.

Running Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit hereAm unable to connect to any NEW Wifi Networks that are detected.The WiFi Adapter sees them just fine - just cannot connect to them.However am able to connect to existing networks (SSIDs that already appear in "Manage Wireless Networks").Furthermore, If I boot into my Windows 7 Enterprise for work, everything works good.For example:I have a saved WiFi connection for my Verizon Hotspot device, that I can always connect to.But if am at hotel (no encryption), and want to connect to their wireless, It fails to connect.

My sister just got a Acer Aspire One 5032H, which came with the crappy windows 7 starter on it, and all WAS working. I installed windows 7 ultimate, which I got through my company and have installed on over 6 computers before with no problems. After installing the new operating system, the wifi card (Atheros) does not find our home wifi network. The other computers in the house pick up the wifi fine. Ive installed the newest version of the driver several times and tried the uninstall stuff as well. Ive updated a few other drivers as well by plugging the computer into an Ethernet cable.The orange light is on under the wifi symbol (no sure if it should be blue), the computer says that the card is working properly, and that it is enabled.

I purchased a new HP Windows 7 laptop for my wife to take to France and England. The computer works perfectly here in the US! I have Microsoft Security Essentials running on it. All software and drivers are up to date.
Over there when she trys to browse the Internet using the hotels' WiFi she gets a message about certificates being expired. I assume this is the website's certificate. But she says no websites can be accessed.

I'm visiting my parents for the summer and I brought my laptop with me and the wireless was working fine for the first month or so. One random day it stopped working and will not connect. I called dell support and for some reason it just started working when I was on the phone with him, but for the next couple of days it would connect for awhile then not connect 15 minutes later. It's not the router because it won't connect to other networks, the dell support guy says its not the hardware (everything in the device manager says its fine also), It works when the ethernet cable is plugged in, I installed all the latest drivers for the network adapter (Intel Wifi link 1000 BGN), I installed a registry fix program and for a little bit it was working with some networks, but only limited access.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad laptop, with Windows 7 home x64. As soon as I turn my computer on and the system finds available connections, the system connects itself automatically to the first WiFi network it finds. Usually this would be my home network, which is fine. But occasionally, this would be my neighbor's unprotected network, which is not as fine.
Potentially, this could be a malicious network, monitoring my internet traffic, which is not fine at all. A possible solution might be to check upon system start that the correct network is used. However, if the connection is accidentally broken, for whatever reason, the system again connects itself to the next available network, which is again problematic. How can I stop this automatic WiFi connections?

A while back I'd get BSOD very regularly ONLY when connected & using the internet. I did some rummaging on here & found out that it was the athr.sys driver that was corrupted. So I went on the internet, found a clean copy, downloaded and swapped it out with the corrupted driver. Everything was fine for a couple months until last week the same thing happened again. So knowing the steps I had to take I repeated what I did by finding another copy of athr.sys off of the internet. (I think it was the same site so I'm pretty sure it wasn't a tainted copy) instead of swapping the files I accidentally went to Device Manager and fully uninstalled my wifi card! Panicking I reinstalled it using what must have been my laptops pre-installed software(?) (Also I note at this point when I accidentally uninstalled my wifi card I think I saw another device from the network section of Device Manager disappear along with Atheros. Whatever that device was, if it was even there, is a mystery to me)

AAM Updater plants itself in your Task Scheduler and your Startup to maintain this routine.Yet Adobe probably releases an update only every couple of months. If you try to delete those entries, the next time you start an Adobe Application, AAM Updater puts itself back into your Startup and Task scheduler.This stops it.[CODE]

I have a SONY vaio vpcea16fg , and a windows 7 professional installed on it. I want to disable windows from auto detecting my built in usb 2.0 camera. I have disabled UPNP and SSDP services, but it doesn't work. I mean when I restart my machine in detects usb camera and install it again!
I want to disable my webcam auto detection, because there is a hardware problem with my built-in webcam and causes a blue screen error. When I move my laptop's lid, windows detect the camera and try to install it automatically, but after two or three times of detection a blue screen is occurred.

Not sure if "focus" is the right term here, but anyway. I use "list" view almost exclusively so this may not be an issue with other views. But one of my beefs with Windows 7 is: if you're viewing a folder that has multiple rows of files or sub folders; then you click on of the the folders that's more to the right of the window and the entire contents of the window reorients itself so what you clicked on is now more towards the left area of the window. Know what I'm saying?
Here's a before and after of what I'm talking about.. Open Window...
Now I click on a file that's slightly out of view and it does this without me touching the slider at all.....

If a window is moved above the screen so that parts are out of view, it is automatically resized to fit in view. Is there a way to disable this?
In Ease of Access Center, I checked "Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of screen," but that only stops it from maximizing.

My computer has worked fine (relatively) since i built it in... 2007. Two weeks ago i stopped being able to use the wifi card on the computer. It kept getting an error saying it failed to start. Uninstalling the drivers/reinstalling/updating them didn't seem to do anything.Eventually I did a Windows repair, took the card out, uninstalled the drivers, put the card back in and it worked.The only side effect, is that my PC no longer remembers the password of the router. I have to double click my SSID each time and re-enter the password. Its getting kinda annoying. WLAN AutoConfig is running as an automatic start.
My computer is:
AMD: Athlon 64 X2 5200+ 2991 MHz
Mobo: Gigabyte M57SLI-S4 v.2
RAM: 4GB Mushkin DDR2 PC2-6400
OS: Win 7 64bit
VC: Geforce GTX 470
WiFI: Gigabyte GN-WP01GS PCI WLAN Card(Turbo)

Is there any way to disable the taskbar popup when you hover your mouse over the edge of the screen with auto-hide on? I still want to have it appear when I press the Windows key, but have that hotspot area somehow disabled. I've tried the app by Prisoner, but that disables the whole taskbar, leaving only the orb.I need this for a Tablet PC i'm customising - I find that when I want to press controls near the edged of the screen, I hit that bloody hotspot area and get the taskbar instead of what I've been aming for. Also, disabling the taskbar completely would not work, since I need the notification icons (battery meter etc.). The tablet has a dedicated Windows button... and nothing else in the way of physical controls.

I've been trying to find a way for the follwoing to happen;My mum and dad have a static caravan and have paid for the sites wifi for the year, which works fine. When you open a browser it autoredirects you to a login page which needs your username and password.This is fine for their laptop but they have a Media Centre which I would like to have a internet connection at boot up at least to chekc for updates/tv guide etc. The only way this can happen is if they get the keyboard and mouse out, drop MediaCentre, open IE and login in. Obviously this isn't going to happen, at least not often.So is it possible to get a script that;1, Run's at start up or as a task that somehow logs you onto the internet automatically?
