I installed windows 7 ultimate, which I got through my company and have installed on over 6 computers before with no problems. After installing the new operating system, the wifi card (Atheros) does not find our home wifi network. The other computers in the house pick up the wifi fine. Ive installed the newest version of the driver several times and tried the uninstall stuff as well. Ive updated a few other drivers as well by plugging the computer into an Ethernet cable.The orange light is on under the wifi symbol (no sure if it should be blue), the computer says that the card is working properly, and that it is enabled.

I'm visiting my parents for the summer and I brought my laptop with me and the wireless was working fine for the first month or so. One random day it stopped working and will not connect. I called dell support and for some reason it just started working when I was on the phone with him, but for the next couple of days it would connect for awhile then not connect 15 minutes later. It's not the router because it won't connect to other networks, the dell support guy says its not the hardware (everything in the device manager says its fine also), It works when the ethernet cable is plugged in, I installed all the latest drivers for the network adapter (Intel Wifi link 1000 BGN), I installed a registry fix program and for a little bit it was working with some networks, but only limited access.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've looked absolutely everywhere I can think of and I can't find a way to disable auto-joining unknown networks. There has to be a way to do it, otherwise that would be a huge security flaw. When in range of my own router or any other access point I have saved, it's fine. However, When I take my laptop elsewhere, it automatically joins unprotected networks, which I don't want to happen
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Lenovo ThinkPad laptop, with Windows 7 home x64. As soon as I turn my computer on and the system finds available connections, the system connects itself automatically to the first WiFi network it finds. Usually this would be my home network, which is fine. But occasionally, this would be my neighbor's unprotected network, which is not as fine.
Potentially, this could be a malicious network, monitoring my internet traffic, which is not fine at all. A possible solution might be to check upon system start that the correct network is used. However, if the connection is accidentally broken, for whatever reason, the system again connects itself to the next available network, which is again problematic. How can I stop this automatic WiFi connections?
A while back I'd get BSOD very regularly ONLY when connected & using the internet. I did some rummaging on here & found out that it was the athr.sys driver that was corrupted. So I went on the internet, found a clean copy, downloaded and swapped it out with the corrupted driver. Everything was fine for a couple months until last week the same thing happened again. So knowing the steps I had to take I repeated what I did by finding another copy of athr.sys off of the internet. (I think it was the same site so I'm pretty sure it wasn't a tainted copy) instead of swapping the files I accidentally went to Device Manager and fully uninstalled my wifi card! Panicking I reinstalled it using what must have been my laptops pre-installed software(?) (Also I note at this point when I accidentally uninstalled my wifi card I think I saw another device from the network section of Device Manager disappear along with Atheros. Whatever that device was, if it was even there, is a mystery to me)

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I made logon on Windows 7, Windows connect on 2 networks ("Virtua" and "unknown"). 'Cause of this, my Internet broadband don't work.
Why windows connect in "unknown" network automatic? How to fix it?
"windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error I have been experiencing lately.
The problem is similar to the one I described previously (here: Windows could not start the Windows Search service on Local Computer)
...namely, I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and have experienced the same error message ( windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX', where XXX is my search query) when attempting to initiate a search via the Windows start menu search box. Unfortunately, my previously proposed solution (of removing a network search location from Windows Search Index list) does not resolve it.....and so finally I resorted to using Samhrutha's proposed solution of modifying the registry to reset Windows Search back to default (which DID work...but ended up removing all the search index customizations I had made).
However, when I then modify the search indexing options to include indexing of my C: drive, I get the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message.
If I then uncheck the C: drive box in the search in the search indexing options, the error message does not occur....so I then went thru a tedious process of trying to identify which folders on my C drive were causing the issue, and from what I am able to tell, the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message seems to always occur when the indexing options include at least one folder WHICH IS OWNED by TRUSTED INSTALLER (e.g., program files folder, program files (x86), c:, etc.). This wasn't a problem previously, so my guess is that MS Update recently (e.g., w/in the last few months) changed some security setting which now prevents Windows Search from being able to index/access folders owned by TRUSTED INSTALLER, resulting in the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message.
I've had my Dell M6500 with Windows 7 for 1.5 years now. My network adapter drivers are all up to date. I've never had any issue connecting to all kinds of wireless---airports, coffee shops, home, etc. The past weekend I was out of town and connected to the wifi at a McDonald's, no problems. When I arrived back home, my wireless connections list contained nothing but a Verizon mobile broadband connection. I have never used mobile broadband. Attached is a video of what I see.
Other various related details:
-When I troubleshoot, I am told to activate my mobile broadband connection.
-I have tried doing a system restore to a point well before my visit to McDonald's. No luck.
-I am not able to return to that McDonald's and try to reconnect to their wifi to see if still works.
-I have not tried connecting to another wifi network besides the one in my house since the McDonald's visit.
-I am still able to connect to the internet using an ethernet cable between my computer and cable modem.
-I am still able to connect to the wireless router using mobile devices and other laptops.
I believe this is a driver problem but couldn't find a solution to this problem.
First of all I had some problems installing windows 7 because it didn't recognize my harddrive being a drive to put win 7 on. but i fixed that by installing xp and then intalling win 7 over the top. and then again reformatting and putting windows 7 on after it started recognizing my harddrive.
BUT NOW THE PROBLEM ABOUT THE TWO NETWORKS
whenever I boot now win 7 always comes up with the problem that it is connected to two different networks. in the network and shared menu it says its connected to the HOME network and to a PUBLIC network both at the same time. I only have one cat5e cable connected to the wireless linksys router. my computer has no other network connections. not wireless nor modem dial up.
it only has the one. so to fix this everytime i have to go into device manager and disable then reinable the driver for the network connection. and then all the sudden it works until i shut off the computer and then when it reboots the problem comes up again. I believe its a driver problem. but don't know how to fix it.
the driver that is enabled on my intel board dq965gf is intel 82566DM Gigabit Network Connection.
Windows 7 found it for me automatically. also i'm just running my cat5e out of the motherboard integrated network connection. NO PCI cards inserted.
I'm having a problem with my networks... i have 2 networks that i connect to, one that is wireless, and is connected to my INTERNET connection, and another that is connected to an Xbox and a file server through a router.
My problem is that whenever i connect to them both, i cannot connect to the Internet anymore, but as soon as i disconnect the router, i am able to access the internet again. My network center shows it as
*My-PC* -------- Multiple Networks-----x-----internet {when im connected to both}
and
*My-PC*---------*Wireless Network*---------Internet {when im connected to the wireless only}
