An old hard drive I have has about 3 OS on it. Win 7, Xp, and maybe win 7 again
The hard drive is half full so I know the information is there. Anyway
How can I
1) View OS choice at boot menu
2) Get information off this hard drive that cna be accessed by going through the other OS
3) The get rid of the other OS
I installed win 7 jsut to try it, but my laptop is not strong enough for it. I have win xp on another partition. But boot menu is from win 7, how to change it back to win xp boot menu?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm a Mac user and an avowed keyboard shortcut enthusiast. On a Mac we have a wonderful app (prog in Winspeak) called Quicksilver, which makes it possible (among other things) to switch between running programs using the keyboard (i.e., without the hunt and click mouse nonsense). All I have to do is invoke a hot-key, type one or two letters (it remembers the apps I use most!), press Enter and BAM! I'm there. I find this so much faster than hunting for the right icon on the taskbar, or alt-tabbing through 10-15 apps to get to where I want to go. Alas, in Windows (any flavor, be it 2K, XP, Vista or 7), if I do anything other than alt-tab to a running program, or click on its icon on the taskbar, I'm going to start another instance of that program, which means loading duplicates of all the resources that have already been loaded into memory! Using Excel as an example, all I want is to hit the Windows key, type e x, hit Enter (assuming Excel is the first choice) and switch to the one (and only) instance of Excel that is already running. Is that really too much to ask? For the record, I have tried a number of Windows based Quicksilver knockoffs, and they all suffer from the same limitation. So it seems that trapping which programs are already running is an impossible feat under Windows?

View 0 Replies View RelatedI wanted to switch users a few days ago, but when I clicked the start button and clicked the arrow next to shutdown, it says lock, log off, restart, or sleep. The switch user option used to be at the top.I have tried going into the registry and finding HideFastUserSwitching, which I had to create a DWORD value for, because it wasn't there - needless to say that didn't work.I was told to also enable the Fast User Switching service in service.msc, but it wasn't on the list.I have tried going to task manager and clicking the 'users' tab which miraculously disappeared - replaced by a TCP/IP tab.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 30GB SSD that is my default drive, with windows 7 on it. It's just too small and I need to switch to a larger one. I also have a 2TB HD with most of my games and other various programs on it. My question is, Can I just buy another SSD, install windows 7, and stick it in like nothing happened? Will I come across any errors because my 2TB is used to the old C: drive? OR, can I just do a full backup of the 30GB SSD and stick it on another drive and pretend nothing happened?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running an Advent desktop PC and its stats are as follows; Intel Core i5-2310 CPU @ 2.90GHz 8GB RAM Win 7 64 bit.The problem I am having is when ever i boot up the computer it shows the Advent logo-screen where I can access the boot menu etc but then it goes to a black screen with a cursor/underscore flashing in the top left... This screen stays for quite a while and I am not sure if it stops because of a key I have pressed or just because it has run its course but after it disappears the computer goes back to the logo-screen for a moment and proceeds to boot up as normal except slightly slower than usual.It is a relatively new computer and it has no problems running at all once the boot up is complete it is fast and as friendly as ever.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI had left my laptop idle for an hour or so after around 3 hours after I booted it up, and luckily I was there to see it: it simply switched off, and any attempt to get into windows through GRUB fails. Ubuntu loads up just fine, but attempting to boot windows results in a plain black screen that goes nowhere. I can't boot into safe mode. My laptop's built in DVD drive doesn't work, so I tried it using the installation disc to repair win7, but after I select my windows operating system from the menu, it simply shows a blank image of the background of the default windows 7 login screen.

Last night I installed Windows 7 (x64) on a separate partition.
Anytime I had tried this in the past, using Vista, it always detected the Windows XP partition, and gave me a boot menu with "Earlier Version of Windows" option to boot to.
This is not so with Windows 7.
How can I get the boot menu to show both options, to boot to XP or to Windows 7?

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhenever I switch user accounts the computer will start the switch and then lock up with a display message that says no signal on the monitor. It happens if the computer has been running for hours or only a couple of minutes. I have to shut the PC off and leave it off for 20-30 minutes. I can then restart and enter any user account. But if I try to switch user or logoff and pick a different user the whole cycle begins anew.

This is very random and unusual and I have found no fix and as you should know it should look something like this:

Even in my Bios menu it shows the same thing and I cannot change it so I can't boot from a USB or CD, etc.
i did a terrible mistake. i installed windows 7 first on one drive and then i install windows xp on separate drive. and when i restart there was no boot menu to choose the OS from list only windows xp started straight away. i did not knew about EasyBCD . and i put my windows 7 DVD and run recovery. now i can goto windows 7 but xp is missing again. is there any way i will not install xp from beginning and windows 7 can add boot menu in startup to choose xp or 7.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am doing an upgrade from XP to Windows 7. I have done this numerous times with no problems until today. I put in the disc for the upgrade and loaded the Boot Device Menu (F12). Then I selected Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive and I can hear the CD spinning but it does nothing. It wont load and the 'Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive' option stays highlighted. I just installed XP doing this exact same method because I installed a new harddrive and I had no problems. It only occurred once I put in the W7 disc.

Soon as I touch any browser icon the rest of computer stops responding as well. It's only me on computer. Have virgin media security/ spyware/ virus protection. Tried CCleaner. i think the bootloader is overwritten im not fully sure - the windows 7 partion is still there when i go on my computer
My pc switches on but doesn't boot. I normally just get a black screen with a flashing underscore in top left corner. I can get into the start up menu and then the boot menu and boot the pc that way. I have on the odd occasion received an error message, something about the keyboard, i cant remember exactly its been a while since i seen that message.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have an eMachines E528 with an Intel Celeron 900 processor. I got the blue screen of death and was able to use the Windows system repair disk to reinstall windows 7. However, while trying to "update" Windows 7 with the SP1 update through the windows update tool, I got the blue screen of death again. This time I cannot boot the computer. I've tried a recovery disk, a system repair disk, a new clean copy of windows 7, and a Partition Wizard bootable CD. Everytime it gets to the point of loading ANY menu, it freezes up and does nothing for hours. I have spent so much time researching and trying things from other forums, and I have gotten nowhere. get a fresh copy of windows on this computer? or get me into the menu that allows me to restore from a system repair disk? I have even tried an "eRecovery" without even going into Windows by pressing ALT F10 at the logo screen as the computer is booting up, and I still get hung up while the application is trying to load the menu options.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 7 and XP installed on separate partitions of one drive. I also had a 2nd hard drive, for backing up data, which I think has died so I disconnected it. This machine used to automatically boot into Windows 7, but now it goes to XP. There was nothing installed onto the 2nd drive so I have no idea why disconnecting that would change anything. I've checked, and the Windows 7 files are still available on the working hard drive.Previously, if I wanted to boot into XP instead of 7, I would go into the BIOS and change the boot order of the 2 hard drives, and then it would automatically boot into the other OS.One other thing I remember, is that when I had the Windows 7 loaded up, it showed the Windows 7 partition as being the C drive. When I have XP turned on, it shows the Windows 7 partition as being D drive and XP as being in the C drive.

One of the issues I've encountered after was that in my Win7 boot up, I'm taken to the boot selection menu, which is usually reserved for multi-booting, or crash recovery.The options shown are...- Windows 7 Ultimate- Windows EMS Setupand towards the bottom of the screen some type of diagnostic option. This is because i have an operating systen showing up in my menu that does not exist anymore and i dont want to wipe the O/S (Windows 7) to remove it as i have other O/S that are working fine.
