I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit, on a Gateway, motherboard is EG43M. It is a dual-core Pentium, CPU E5300 @ 2.60GHz.
I have a virus that calls for running Windows Defender Offline. I'm trying to boot my PC from a USB drive to run WDO, but it doesn't work. I've tried pressing F12 on startup to enter the Boot Menu to change it. How do I gain entry to the Boot Menu to change to boot from USB drive?

I have successfully formatted my second HD into 3 partitions: Windows 7 x86, Windows 7 64 bit, and XP. The startup menu works fine but the two Windows 7 lines are the same. I may not be using the correct term for startup menu, but it is the one that appears when dual booting. Anyway, I would like to find the file so I can change the two identical lines to different lines. That is, instead of both saying "windows 7" I can change them to "Windows 7 x86" and Windows 7 x64" or something like that. Anybody know where that file is?

I recently purchased a new laptop - Toshiba R835 P50x - and replaced the 640gb 5400rpm drive with a 120gb ssd(Kingston v100). I cloned the 640gb, 3 partition(2 hidden) drive to the SSD(all 3 paritions) and replaced it in the laptop and everything is working just fine I now have the original drive in a usb external enclosure and would like to use it for an external back-up drive. What the best(and easiest) method reformatting that drive to eliminate the hidden partitions, and give me just one?

Dualbooting Ubuntu Lucid and W7 on a home-built box with a WD 500GB SATA HDD. Well, except today, no boot. Have connected the HDD to my spare box to retrieve the ext3 files from the Ubuntu partition, mostly some flac, mp3s, and pngs and jpgs, without success.
Firstly, how can I access those files? My spare box is also running Lucid. Seems that this would be easier, idk.
Secondly, should I attempt to repair? Or is a clean reinstall/reformat/repartition a better alternative?

So my desktop computer had a nasty virus or something on it, and it was originally a 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium (as it came with the computer). To get rid of it, I decided to wipe the whole HDD and install a clean Windows 7 Ultimate. But I noticed that the boot time for computer now is MUCH slower now. Before on the Home Premium it would only hang at the "Welcome" screen for only about 5 seconds, then go straight to the desktop and I would be able to use it within minutes. Total boot time: probably under a minute. Now on Ultimate, it hangs on the "Welcome" screen for about 30 seconds, then takes another 10 seconds before I can do anything. Total boot time: 1.5 or 2 minutes.I've tried disabling some of the startup programs and ran a clean boot, but nothign wouthe boot time as fast as it was before. I know that Ultimate has a lot more features, does that explain the extra boot time?

if it is possible to change to send to menu to a move to command? For Reference: [URL]
That is a small, easy tutorial to add a move to menu to the right click context menu, but it still isnt what I want it to do.
I do not want to have to hold the shift key when I right click and send to whatever location I have in the send to menu. I also do not want to have to tell it where I want to move the file each time using the method shown in the above link. I simply want to my computer to just move the file to the location in the menu instead of copying it there. Can this be done? Am I asking to much of my operating system? I am running windows 7 Ultimate x64.

I am running an Advent desktop PC and its stats are as follows; Intel Core i5-2310 CPU @ 2.90GHz 8GB RAM Win 7 64 bit.The problem I am having is when ever i boot up the computer it shows the Advent logo-screen where I can access the boot menu etc but then it goes to a black screen with a cursor/underscore flashing in the top left... This screen stays for quite a while and I am not sure if it stops because of a key I have pressed or just because it has run its course but after it disappears the computer goes back to the logo-screen for a moment and proceeds to boot up as normal except slightly slower than usual. It is a relatively new computer and it has no problems running at all once the boot up is complete it is fast and as friendly as ever.

I recently went from Xp home 32-bit to Win 7 home 64-bit and there is one thing that its annoying to me I would love to change but I do not know if it can be changed or how to do so if if it can.
Now to be very specific I linked to what i would like to have changed. i would like to change that to this look:
see that folder with the green arrow under the favorites menu. that is what I'd lvoe to have back again.
i do not like this whole my computer->c:->Program files-> winamp-> skins(that is an example) and to go back have to click on on the previous folder name. It would be nice to have that button again. so i can move back to the previous folder easier and faster. as well as the back button so i can click move quicker between folders.

I have XP (x86) installed on one partition.
Last night I installed Windows 7 (x64) on a separate partition.
Anytime I had tried this in the past, using Vista, it always detected the Windows XP partition, and gave me a boot menu with "Earlier Version of Windows" option to boot to.
This is not so with Windows 7.
How can I get the boot menu to show both options, to boot to XP or to Windows 7?

Anyone know how to change the underlined key in the Context Menu? Say for example you right click a Folder Favorite in the Nav Pane in Explorer. There's a command that says MyCommand. If the current underlined key is 'M' and 'y' is not taken, how to change it to 'y' then?In Windows Seven and Vista there are context menu commands to open the folder favorite in the Nav Pane in a new window. But for some reason they are different. I'd like to make them both the same. That way I wouldn't have to think about it. Just right click a Folder favorite and hit the key.

I got this new computer and at some point I went into the boot option to try and install my PC to it's factory settings but when I opened up the boot option it showed something like this but not exactly:
1. MC43689SGDAL7
2. MATSHITADVD-RAM
This is very random and unusual and I have found no fix and as you should know it should look something like this:
1. CD/DVD Drive
2. USB
3. Hard Drive
4. something else
Even in my Bios menu it shows the same thing and I cannot change it so I can't boot from a USB or CD, etc.

In Windows Seven if I right click in Explorer left pane Favorites I can then press 'e' to open that folder in a new window. In Vista, I have to press 'o'. Being right handed and wanting to use the mouse, now I have to reach across with my left hand to press the 'o' key. Is there no way to change the underline/shortcut/accelerator whatever they call it key in the context menu? I see no way to do it. I look in the Registry and I don't see any "&" in front of any of the letters. But the short cut letter is there just the same. There must be a way to change it.

For some reason, my start menu has suddenly become ridiculously tall, spanning the entire height of the screen. This image might give a better idea: imgur: the simple image sharer.
I have no idea how or why this happened. I tried searching for the problem, but I can't find a single thing even remotely related. My recent items count is at 0, so it's nothing to do with that. I've already tried fiddling about with the setting for that, but with no success at all. I tried a system restore to before this occurred, but this had absolutely no effect either. It's only affecting this profile, and no others (although, really, the only others are guest or temp accounts).

I am doing an upgrade from XP to Windows 7. I have done this numerous times with no problems until today. I put in the disc for the upgrade and loaded the Boot Device Menu (F12). Then I selected Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive and I can hear the CD spinning but it does nothing. It wont load and the 'Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive' option stays highlighted. I just installed XP doing this exact same method because I installed a new harddrive and I had no problems. It only occurred once I put in the W7 disc.

My pc switches on but doesn't boot. I normally just get a black screen with a flashing underscore in top left corner. I can get into the start up menu and then the boot menu and boot the pc that way. I have on the odd occasion received an error message, something about the keyboard, i cant remember exactly its been a while since i seen that message.
