Repairing Windows 7 Partition?
Feb 23, 2012
The problem is that as soon as windows boots up it starts up in Startup Repair. Startup repair does not fix the computer, it gives an error that says it cannot fix it automatically. So naturally I tried to repair computer from the Windows 7 install disk. However, I get this error when I use startup repair from the installation disk:
Code: Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automaticaly
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: StartupRepairOffline
Problem Signature 01: 6.1.7600.16385
Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385
Problem Signature 03: unknown
Problem Signature 04: 21200432
Problem Signature 05: AutoFailover
Problem Signature 06: 35
Problem Signature 07: CorruptFile
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.265.1 It does show their is a Windows 7 partition there that is > 200 gb, but it does not recognize it as a Windows OS for some reason.
When I try
bootrec /ScanOs
I get Code: Please wait, since this may take a while...
Successfully scanned Windows installations.
Total identified Windows installations: 0
The operation completed successfully This seems strange to me.I have no clue how to fix it and have no idea how she messed up her computer, but I suspect it may be because she might have deleted important files. My last resort would be to do a fresh install as I have no idea what sort of files she has saved and I wouldn't want to destroy anything important. Also, (and this may be obvious) I have no idea what version of Windows 7 she has or what service pack. She is a computer illiterate so I doubt she knows(I'm using my install disk).

I have a Samsung laptop running windows 7 64 bit. I primarily use a non-administrator account. I got some malware a few days ago. Malwarebytes and MS security essentials seem to have cleared that up, but everything is still running slow in it.Additionally, the malware deleted all the shortcuts from the start menu (S.M.A.R.T. rogue antivirus, I deleted the temporary files before reading that was where the shortcuts were moved to)The administrator account is not suffering from the slowdown, everything seems fine in it. I made a windows repair disc using it.Partitions: there are four right now, windows (100mb), C drive (100gb), D drive (350 gb), and a recovery partition (15gb)1. I'd like to restore/repair windows 7 on the non-administrator account. From what I understand, the registry is likely faulty. I have little understanding of how to fix it, and no image or backup from before the malware infected. My data files are backed up to an external hard drive. I'd prefer to keep the programs registered and installed. I'm interested in dual-booting ubuntu. As the maximum of 4 partitions are assigned, I'd need to remove one of them. I've created a disk image of the system and C partitions onto an external hard drive (using Macrium Reflect). The data files are also backed up, either on that disc or on different clouds. I'd like to confirm that having done this, and having a windows repair disc, it's safe for me to use the recovery partition for ubuntu.

I have my orginal O/S disk that does not have SP1 on it. Can I use another O/S W7Pro x64 disk with SP1 to perform the repair operation. Then will it require me to enter the new product key or can I keep the same orginal product key? Does the program read the product key from the disk

I'm having a problem with my laptop, it won't boot into Windows 7. When I boot normally, the Startup repair starts running and says it cannot repair the computer automatically, same thing happens when I try to boot into safe mode. I've tried using last known config., and I must of turned off the system restore at some point because it states that there are none to revert back to when I try that. I looked through the Startup Repair Diagnosis and repair details and states root cause found and its these two files.

I have an hp laptop G62 series 64 bit windows 7. I can run it in safe mode only; in normal mode it loads the desktop but after a minute or two it freezes. My battery needs replacing i think but i don't know if that is the problem. I ran a malware check and deleted the corrupted files and it had no effect.

Recent update installed was Itunes with a google toolbar.Started getting adware warnings and saw some kind of "adware/malware doctor" asking to update on the pc. When I went to deinstall it as I could see it in the programs list, all hell broke loose and now my machine doesn't boot.

I have WXP installed on my 160 GB "C" drive and then installed W7 on the 40 GB "D" drive, which of course, becomes the "C" drive for W7. I received the infamous BSOD this morning on WXP and upon reboot, it gave me the following message::
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."
How do I get the system to boot from the XP CD when it always goes to the W7 boot manager? Once I can get it to boot from the CD, I feel that I can do the repair.
Should I unplug the "D" drive so all the system will see on startup is "C" with XP installed?

My current build is shutting down while playing games, and not restarting, and BSODs. I want to try and see if it is a hardware problem that I can fix this paycheck without taking it to the local computer repair shop that will cost an arm and a leg. attached is the error that shows in event viewer after I restarted my pc, and I did some looking and still not sure what I need to do. Do I need a new CPU? trying to not keep throwing money at it, already bought a new GPU and PSU for it, separate reasons. Any help will be awesome!

I just tried sfc/scannow and I got the following message: There is a system repair pending which requires a reboot to complete. Restart windows and try sfc again.I'm thinking this repair pending is from the chldsk/r I completed previously. This is great, except when I reboot, the repair does not startup and the system just goes back to the Windows Error Recovery screen I had earlier. How do I get the repair to complete?

Before I start this happened after updating the motherboard BIOS from version 1.4 to 1.7, I went to 1.6 after just in case the latest BIOS had a bug
I've been stuck on the startup repair for almost 5 hours saying that it's repairing my hard drive or whatever (i forget exactly what it said), I first booted linux to check the SMART data on the HDD (i now know that I can do it with HBCD too) it came back all fine. I am now running Hirens Boot CD and DRevitalise to scan and repair bad sectors.
System Specs:
i5 3570k @ stock
MSI Z77 GD55 BIOS Version 1.6
8GB Kingston HyperX 1600mhz
Running HD4000 graphics
500GB Blue WD HDD
I do have a DxDiag on the desktop of the pc in question which I could get if needed (to tired to do now)
Edit: Reinstalling is not an option I will consider unless there is nothing else that I can do.
Edit: Turns out there is a tool from WD for HDD testing, am running that now instead if the last one.

This seems to work just in case you are testing various versions of Windows and have problems with BootingYou CAN use the repair option on a different level of Windows to the one you are currently using -- so long as both the install disk and the target Windows system are both x-86 or x-64I've repaired a Windows 7 Ultimate install with the repair option booting from a Windows 7 Home Premium disk and also the other way aroundYou don't need (for the repair function) to enter a serial number.Note that you should only use this for BOOT problems and only if you don't have the correct disk immediately to hand --saves downloading a 4 GB or so ISO --even using a FAST connection it will take a while.

I currently have a dual boot on my computer with Windows 7 and XP. Unfortunately as my computer is quite old my hard drive is not very big and with it being partitioned I am fast running out of disk space. So I tried to shrink the XP partition to allow me more disk space for Windows 7. Unfortunatley this would only let me shrink it by 83mb for some reason. I decided that since I barely use XP anymore that I would simply reformat the XP drive then try and merge them together. When I tried to format the partition it just gave the error "Windows was unable to complete the format". I then discovered in Disk Management that the Windows XP partition was the system partition which was causing the problem.

I'm a long-time reader but new poster. I am currently running Windows 7. I want to install Windows XP onto another disc and have a dual-boot setup. I keep Windows 7 up to date and secure, but for the XP partition, I would rather not have antivirus running or even installed, in order to limit background processes. I will not be logging into any place or making any credit card purchases when booted into Windows XP. It will just be used for surfing, games, etc. Further, if and when XP becomes compromised or buggy, I will simply overwrite the partition with a backup image.
If I use Bitlocker to lock down the Windows 7 partition (with the encryption key on a thumb drive) and boot into Windows XP, am I correct in thinking the XP installation see or can't access the Windows 7 partition? If XP gets compromised, can a virus access or write to the Windows 7 partition?
Is there any other reason why this would not be secure? Can a virus write to the BIOS?

I wanted to create a new partition to try out linux. So I decided to shrink E: by 20 GB. I then formatted the free space into a new drive by right clicking and creating new simple volume. I was warned that the drive would be made "simple", but not knowing the implications, I went ahead with the procedure. Now on rebooting, windows won't load. I had made a repair disc, so was able to use it to check for any start up errors. It reported none. Moreover I used "diskpart" through cmd to find volume c: is dynamic.

I'm using Compaq Presario CQ40-627TUMy Laptop SpecIntel Dual Core Processor T4400 (2.2GHz, 80Mhz FSB,1 MB L2 Cache)- 2048MB 800MHz DDR2 Memory- 320GB 7200rpm Hard Disk Drive- 14.1' TFT WXGA High-Definition widescreen LCD panel with brightviewtechnologynd i'm using windows 7 Ultimate on boot system partition C, dual boot with linux mint. which mean i got four partition. one for linux mint. one for its swap space. one for windows 7. one for my data storage(movies,drivers,mp3,picture and etc).last few days i try to resize my C partition (120gb) to make it smaller to gain some unallocated spaces and resize the D partition because my D (almost 100gb) (ntfs/primary/data storage) almost full. i use easeus partition master v5.01.
After done resizing and restart i can't see any D partition. so i was worried that my data will disappeared. i try to look for it but there is no Drive D even on the easeus or diskpart. the only drive appears was C Drive.i remove my Linux Mint and its swap (60gb) and thinking that i could get some more free space and do some cmd prompt windows 7 repair fixmbr thing to remove the grub. then i use partition recovery to transfer those missing data from partition D to C Drive. (appears as unformatted)i try to use partition wizard home to resize it back to 300gb. and it works. but i cant make a partition. it will disappear just like that.i also try to use diskpart, command prompt diskpard, and paragon. but also not working. the C drive was shrink but theres no unallocated space and no D drive (the new create partition). i try logical partition, primary, ntfs and fat but also not working. even the unallocated space also gone. i use almost 4 3rd party partitioning software but still got no luck with it.example:i divide 300gb into 2 partition which exist the C partition 150Gb but the other one gone. i wish theres other way than format. i also done many time. doing check disk, partition table doctor, searching for bad sector. but no errors with my hdd.

I have Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit installed on DELL desktop (Optiplex 990) i7 Core. I have two HDD: Disk 0 contains the operating system 500GB. and Disk 1 empty 1TB.
I want to make a partition on disk 1 to mirror the operating system partition and keep the remaining for data storage. I tried to do but I had the following error message: "All disks holding extents for a given volume must have the same sector size, and the sector size must be valid."
I tried to attach a screen shot but couldn't.

I wanted to resize a partition, so I backuped all important files and booted from a vista PE CD. The program used is called "Easeus". After the resizing a message appeared, which told me that the system information couldnt be updated. After a restart, it - well, it didnt restarted. I tryed to format my C:Windows partition, but Easus decided to randomly format my linux partitin, too. Yey. After that i just formated everything, so i can create one big partition so this never happens again :P. To put it in a nutshel, there is no way to boot besides from booting from a cd. The diagnostic tool of the fabricator is giving me the "error code: BIOHD-3 No bootable drives detected" message.I tried to fix it with a win7 repair disk (just realized, that the disk is for 64bit, i have a 32 bit os - i think it doesnt matter, because there isnt any os installed at all). I used pretty much every "bootrec" command, sucessful, but no change. The startup repair gave this message: "the partition table does not have a valid system partition" diskpart - act isnt helping either: "The specified partition type is not valid for this operation."I dont know if i could install any os from a disk - i dont have a bootable installation cd/dvd. Because of that i would be happy if someone can tell me where i can find a free os and how i install it. From a os i can install my win 7.

If this were just a file, I'd use a unix/cygwin utility like diff or cmp. However, it is a partition.

I'm preparing a fresh install of Win 7 Pro on a 2 disk system (90GB SSD and 1TB HDD). I'll be placing the OS/Apps on the SSD and Data and image restore files on HDD.Qs:1. If I allocate ~60GB for the OS/Apps partition, and actual storage of the OS/Apps is 35GB...what size partition do I need on the HDD to save this image file? I assume the compressed file will be 45-50% of original. Will I want to store multiple image files created over the course of time as apps are added and system is further optimized, and hence need a partition that is a multiple of the OS/App partition size? What do you do?2. Also, an 8GB RamDisk will serve as scratch disk space for some apps (RamDisk +) which can save an image of the session's writes upon shutdown. I plan to save this image to the 2nd HDD. Is it recommended that I save this to same partition that stores the OS/App image in Q #1 above,
