Can you make a recovery section by splitting some of the drive space and backing up on that? or is a backup image different to a system recovery?

I am planning on making a windows 7 image with macrium reflect free. Windows 7 is installed on a 290 GB partition. Now, only 22.3 GB of that space is being used, pretty much by windows 7 and other third-party programs. Will macrium reflect back up that 22.3 GB or back up all 290 GB which is mostly free space? ( I know that the question seems a little weird, but I want to make sure)

I have Unallocated space at the very end of my hard drive, even after the 25gb Recovery Partition, this is due to copying my old hard drive onto this new one via Clonezilla, and it automatically keeping the unallocated space at the end. Can I either move the unallocated space around the Recovery Partition, or delete the Recovery Partition altogether? Sorry if I am being a little unclear.

I have Acronis true image 2010 and it works sometimes but I just got a corrupted archive and I lost my C drive. So I'm thinking about another Backup program, or buying Acronis true image 2012 with Norton Ghost 15 so if one fails I have the other, but for both of them to be on the same computer might cause problems.

I have a machine Running Win 7 Enterprise x64, the drive has been encrypted with BitLocker. Recently the machine stopped booting. I have tried normal boot, last known good configuration, safe mode w/ networking, safe mode and none of these will boot, they all get a BSOD.
I have the BitLocker Recovery Key so that part is not an issue. Is there a Bootable CD that has the ability to unlock the drive or does anyone have any other ideas?

The reason: I write a lot of code with use of such symbols as (){}",#$%$^$&<> and i have to use shift all the time.
The problem: After a while my hands feel some discomfort especially my tiny finger which i use to press shift.
So i was thinking if i can remap shift to space it could be a lot better. I know there is a lot of software that can do simple remap but then i have to press shift when i need to put a space. Doesn't make any sense.
What i am looking: I way to make work space button like this: If i just press down then immediately release space button it acts as usual space (ie. reacts on key up event)but if i hold it and press another keys it acts as a shift button.

I had to recover my system following an overnight system crash - don't really know what happened. Following my windows 7 re-install I started getting messages about low disk space. Looking at my disk space I have this:Recovery(C 20Mb free of 14.6Gb - nearly all of this is taken by windowsOS(D 243GB free of 284Gb - I have some downloads on there but also another copy of Windows 7Essentially my C drive, which seems to be far too small is full with Windows 7 and becoming constantly full. My D drive has all the capacity I need but isn't much use in day to day running

I want to do a clean install of my purchased Windows 7 from Windows 7 RC. The problem is I have a lot of data that I want to keep and since it is about 500GB in size, i have no cheap way of backing it up (obviously considering buying another HDD, but i'd rather not for now). I was thinking that maybe I should partition my 1TB main HDD into 2, and transfer all my data over to new partition, format/clean install the old one and lastly merge the partitions. Is this possible?

I am trying to backup my C drive so that I can RAID 2 SSD's, but when I try to go to the windows backup software it includes my F: drive as a System drive. Any ideas how to fix this? I believe it may be because my Internet Explorer Cache folder is there. I try to delete it and it says It is in use by the Operating System. I try to move the folder to my C: drive and delete it on the F: drive and I still get the same error. I don't know why. Could this be the reason Windows backup is trying to backup both drives? I'm not sure if the internet explorer cache is the reason, or maybe it could be something else, like my MBR is on that drive?

I've backed up Windows through the official Windows Backup tool (in the Control Panel) to a hard drive (actually, a second partition). It takes about 8-12 GB (don't remember correctly). Then, right after that, I chose to make a backup also on a DVD, and, surprisingly, one DVD was enough! First of all, it's weird that it could fit into one DVD while if I tried to burn the files form the backup on the hard drive, I would need at least two. And then the second thing: the files on the DVD all take about 3.4 GB. I tried making an image of it though Alcohol 120, and the MDF file takes about 3.4 GB. ImgBurn couldn't make an image, because it's a multiple session DVD. So why is there such a difference in size between system images backed up to the hard drive and a DVD? Can I trust a DVD?
By the way, I tried creating backup with Arconis True Image (I don't remember true name) and Norton Ghost 15 to a hard drive, and their images take about 3 GB. So if the real size of my system image is about 3 GB, then why did Windows backup on HDD take so much place?
It's Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit, by the way.

Attempting to backup my HP laptop to my new Seagate Expansion 3TB plug and play external drive returns the error shown in the screenshot below. After searching Google for a solution it seems the backup utility in Windows 7 is not compatible with high capacity drives over 2.5TB. Am I understanding this correctly? How am I going to backup my laptop onto this drive?I did come across a proposed solution here but apparently this would prevent the drive from working with Windows XP. As I need to move file between the laptop and an XP machine this is not an option for me.There is approximately 126GB of data on the machine and the drive is brand new, formatted to NTFS and otherwise empty.Perhaps I need to use a third party software to backup?

I've got all my music in an external drive. When i configured bakups i selected that same external drive as destination to back up to.
Now, i added the music from that drive to windows media player and now, when the computer backs up, i've got this error telling me some files were omitted (namely all the music) because they're on the same drive as the backup's destination.
I'm going to use WMP because it's already there (regardless of there being a million better choices of media players/managers) so don't bother suggesting otherwise.
My question is: is there any special folder i should avoid backing up so this error doesn't happen? (like the one that contains WMP database)

Purchased new Acer Veriton VM498G-Ui3550W computer. When trying to create back-up DVD's, system claims that the DVD's aren't formatted and asks to format them. When formatting is ok'ed, the computer works for a while and then states that formatting failed. I have the same results when trying DVD-R, DVD+R, and DVD+R/W discs.
Acer has given me two sets of instructions on how to creaate recovery disks, but both instruct me to launch programs that don't show up on my "Start - All Programs" menu.Acer has offered to send me recovery disks, but I am concerned why the machine will not make them.I did place recovery files (successfully ?) into the data partition of the hard drive, but this will be of no use with a hard drive failure.

I have been trying to make recovery discs for the Toshiba Satellite laptop. I went throught the Recovery Disc Creator Wizard which informed me to have five DVD discs ready. By following the onboard instructions I completed three discs on Verbatim DVD-R 8.5 GB: Recovery Disc 1 and 2, and a 3rd Windows Recovery Environment disc. However, when I was starting the 4th disc the computer fist failed to acknowledge it and then opened the drawer requiring another disc. The disc was empty as far as I know but I went back to the shop and bought five more discs and the system also rejects these although they are identical. However, the applications disc requirement states either a 4.5 or flashmedia to be inserted to make only one disc. I think I will buy the 4.5 disc and see if it works.

I recently purchaced a new notebook, shipped with Windows 7 64-bit HP. I need 32-bit in order to run certain programs, so I used my Windows 7 Ult DVD and installed it on this laptop. I did not delete the recovery partition that was already on the drive, but I re-installed my own Windows 7 on the partition with the pre-installed Windows 7. This was a mistake... I lack a lot of drivers and pre-compiled software that is not available for download from the manufactor. So, I hope there is a way to make the recovery disk bootable, so I can boot from it in order to respawn the pre-installed Windows 7.

Am I only allowed to make one copy of my Recovery partition?I have a Dell desktop, with a built in Dell recovery partition. I have read that. "You are only allowed to make ONE copy of your Recovery partition and it must be on to ROM CDs or DVDs."I didn't know that when I made a copy of C and recovery partition to my external drive,
I am a bit concered that I can only do this once. Is that strictly true?

Right now I will upgrade my Vista laptop to Windows 7 . I already did it before with the RC and worked great.
Anyways there are certain functions on my laptop I use . So that's why I didn't do a clean install. But if there is any problem and I need to reinstall windows. I will have to install Vista first . Till SP1 is the best I believe and then again Windows 7 .
A big hassle if you ask me?
Is there a way to make a boot-able DVD or something of my laptop once I upgraded to windows 7 and I take kind of a snapshot of that moment.
or something else'
Like when i got my laptop I had to make 2 DVD's so I could reinstall windows. Was hoping I could do the same with Windows7 somehow.
Another thing is. I have an English Windows Vista on a machine but will get a Dutch windows 7 upgrade. I don't think I can upgrade from a English to Dutch right? Although the upgrade is Ultimate?
I also can install an English version of Ultimate and use the key from the Dutch ultimate? or is the key from the box really only for the DVD that's in the box ?
