I use a dual boot system win 7 ultimate and xp sp3.now win 7 does not boot but can log on to xp. I did not create a system recovery image of win 7 and turned off system restore. Ihave no installation disk. So my only option is to create a system recovery image from xp.

I can however access the recovery image from the partition and have copied it to an external USB hard drive. Can anyone tell me how I can start the re-install from the recovery image now on the USB external HD. Can I somehow create some re-install DVDs from this recovery image?

I tried to do a recovery from the disk image, but my VISTA volume does not restore. Is there anyway to restore both volumes? Checked disk management it shows all 4 primary partitions used: 200mb (boot), 169gb (C drive), 281gb (D drive), 16.5gb Recovery partition. I tried F9 when booting (nothing) just boots into OS. I swear I am hitting every problem possible with this computer!! After much frustration for two days, I have done a clean Win 7 Ultimate install. I am running a SSD/HDD combo. Intel Rapid Storage kept flagging my mechanical drive as faulty (even after I reset it back to normal). I got tired of the message and just turned off the feature... I have been having trouble making a backup image. I REALLY need a backup disk since I had to turn off "System Restore Points" so that it wouldn't bloat my SSD. I noticed that it will successfully go through making a backup of my C drive (the SSD) and when it hits the mechanical drive, the backup will fail and I will get the 0x8078015b error.
Does anyone know how to fix this or what I can do to make a backup without using the Win 7 utility? Is my mechanical drive really faulty?? Is it my external that I am trying to make the backup to being faulty?I saw someone else with this same problem and even after getting all new drives twice, the problem persisted and it never seemed to get resolved... My HDD is a WD Caviar Black 750 GB. I really need this computer up and running ASAP and as I have purchased the mech.

Does windows configure itself differently during setup on a SSD rather than a traditional HDD? If so, will that cause any problems by restoring the image onto the SSD?I only ask because using the system image to reinstall everything would go a lot faster than reinstalling windows + all the programs I included on the recovery image.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just purchased an Asus X54C laptop that came with 7-64bt, the first thing I did was run the backup/restore and created a system image roughly 24gb in size on my logical partition of the HD.
I then installed the customer preview of Windows 8, which I was under the impression defaulted a dual-boot setup as long as you have Windows 7 and choose to keep all of your existing data, which I did.
Long story short, my Asus didn't come with the restore media, which I guess a lot of laptops don't come with. So, I was able to get a copy of Windows 7 so I can at least install over my Windows 8 so I can then start over with my backup that I created.
The version of Windows 7 is x86, but my backup is x64, I restarted into the restore screen and was shown that yes I have the image for the C drive, but I cannot restore for some reason.
Do I need to be on Windows 7 x64 to use my restore image?

When formatting is ok'ed, the computer works for a while and then states that formatting failed. I have the same results when trying DVD-R, DVD+R, and DVD+R/W discs.
Acer has given me two sets of instructions on how to creaate recovery disks, but both instruct me to launch programs that don't show up on my "Start - All Programs" menu.Acer has offered to send me recovery disks, but I am concerned why the machine will not make them.I did place recovery files (successfully ?) into the data partition of the hard drive, but this will be of no use with a hard drive failure.

View 4 Replies View Related my laptop (Compaq Presario CQ61) contracted a virus that did some heavy damage. So I go into the boot up menu and decide to restore the laptop back to the factory settings, just to be on the safe side so I can start afresh.Now it's on a screen that says 'Factory image recovery preperation' and it's currently copying files to restore the hard drive, but it's froze on 58%.
Last night I did the same thing and left it overnight while I went to bed, and when I woke up this morning it was still froze on 1%.
Edit: The loading bar is still there, but the place where '58%' was has gone. My mouse is moving but very slowly.
Edit: My laptop is very warm and I can't feel or hear the fan... it's going to overheat. I've had to turn it off.

Related problem... thinking the C-drive was toast, and knowing I have an OEM Windows-7 CD, I bought a new 3-TB drive. Installed the drive, attempted to do a clean-fresh system install on the new drive, and Win-7 tells me it can not install windows because of some hardware incompatibility issue. Since nothing was changed from the previously working Win-7 installation on this system, except the new 3TB hard drive..
I can either go with the backup system image, or clean install of Win-7 to the new drive to get me back up an running. I would actually prefer to install the backup image to the NEW drive, if possible.
I have been trying to make recovery discs for the Toshiba Satellite laptop. I went throught the Recovery Disc Creator Wizard which informed me to have five DVD discs ready. By following the onboard instructions I completed three discs on Verbatim DVD-R 8.5 GB: Recovery Disc 1 and 2, and a 3rd Windows Recovery Environment disc. However, when I was starting the 4th disc the computer fist failed to acknowledge it and then opened the drawer requiring another disc. The disc was empty as far as I know but I went back to the shop and bought five more discs and the system also rejects these although they are identical. However, the applications disc requirement states either a 4.5 or flashmedia to be inserted to make only one disc. I think I will buy the 4.5 disc and see if it works.

I need 32-bit in order to run certain programs, so I used my Windows 7 Ult DVD and installed it on this laptop. I did not delete the recovery partition that was already on the drive, but I re-installed my own Windows 7 on the partition with the pre-installed Windows 7. This was a mistake... I lack a lot of drivers and pre-compiled software that is not available for download from the manufactor. So, I hope there is a way to make the recovery disk bootable, so I can boot from it in order to respawn the pre-installed Windows 7.

Another thing is. I have an English Windows Vista on a machine but will get a Dutch windows 7 upgrade. I don't think I can upgrade from a English to Dutch right? Although the upgrade is Ultimate?
I also can install an English version of Ultimate and use the key from the Dutch ultimate? or is the key from the box really only for the DVD that's in the box ?
