Backing Up Encrypted Drive

Aug 20, 2012

I have a machine Running Win 7 Enterprise x64, the drive has been encrypted with BitLocker. Recently the machine stopped booting. I have tried normal boot, last known good configuration, safe mode w/ networking, safe mode and none of these will boot, they all get a BSOD.

I have the BitLocker Recovery Key so that part is not an issue. Is there a Bootable CD that has the ability to unlock the drive or does anyone have any other ideas?

Backing Up The C Drive?

Aug 23, 2012

I have Acronis true image 2010 and it works sometimes but I just got a corrupted archive and I lost my C drive. So I'm thinking about another Backup program, or buying Acronis true image 2012 with Norton Ghost 15 so if one fails I have the other, but for both of them to be on the same computer might cause problems.

Encrypted Whole Storage Drive With Bitlocker

Feb 6, 2013

i have 2 harddrives 1 for os and the other for storage. i encrypted my entire storage drive because its easier to do then ur os because you needsome kind of card key or usb for the boot drive, but anywho im curious if i unlock the drive so i can access the files does that means its then visable to hackers? or does it need to be locked at all times to remain hidden and encrypted. so my question is if someone hacked into my pc from another computer and i already unlocked my storage drive, would the hackers be able to see all the files on it?

Backing Up For Clean Install On The Same Drive

Nov 11, 2009

I want to do a clean install of my purchased Windows 7 from Windows 7 RC. The problem is I have a lot of data that I want to keep and since it is about 500GB in size, i have no cheap way of backing it up (obviously considering buying another HDD, but i'd rather not for now). I was thinking that maybe I should partition my 1TB main HDD into 2, and transfer all my data over to new partition, format/clean install the old one and lastly merge the partitions. Is this possible?

Backing Up Boot Drive Gives Error

Jun 22, 2012

I am trying to backup my C drive so that I can RAID 2 SSD's, but when I try to go to the windows backup software it includes my F: drive as a System drive. Any ideas how to fix this? I believe it may be because my Internet Explorer Cache folder is there. I try to delete it and it says It is in use by the Operating System. I try to move the folder to my C: drive and delete it on the F: drive and I still get the same error. I don't know why. Could this be the reason Windows backup is trying to backup both drives? I'm not sure if the internet explorer cache is the reason, or maybe it could be something else, like my MBR is on that drive?

How To Recover Formatted Drive Encrypted With BitLocker

Sep 17, 2012

I had encrypted my C drive with bitlocker. It worked fine for 5 months. After 5 months it was giving problems, so I took help from brother which suggested to reimage the machine with Windows 7.I did the same, however during installation of Win7 it showed drive C and Drive D. I deleted the Drive C and its gone, tried to refresh the windows however still was not there, so now installed Win7 on only remaining drive.I had 500 GB of hard disk divided in 2 partitions. Now I only see 224 GB in My Computer.I don't want to recover my data from encrypted drive; however I need that space of 250 GB.

How To Backup Files From System Encrypted Hard Drive

Jul 16, 2012

I've got a new Dell Latitude which is used for business. I've encrypted the hard drive using Truecrypt. I've encrypted the entire drive, not just made an encrypted container. My question is though, if I use the windows 7 backup and restore feature, and backup the hard drive to a NAS device, in the event of the laptop being stolen, or if I choose to work with files on another computer, will the files which windows 7 backs up work? I work in IT, so have years of experience here, however encryption is something which I am only just learning. If the windows 7 backup and restore feature will not support this, can anyone recommend an alternative? I've looked into Acronis True Image Home 2012, however still need to evaluate this.

Backing Up To A Hard Drive And A DVD: Big Image Size Differences?

Apr 24, 2012

I've backed up Windows through the official Windows Backup tool (in the Control Panel) to a hard drive (actually, a second partition). It takes about 8-12 GB (don't remember correctly). Then, right after that, I chose to make a backup also on a DVD, and, surprisingly, one DVD was enough! First of all, it's weird that it could fit into one DVD while if I tried to burn the files form the backup on the hard drive, I would need at least two. And then the second thing: the files on the DVD all take about 3.4 GB. I tried making an image of it though Alcohol 120, and the MDF file takes about 3.4 GB. ImgBurn couldn't make an image, because it's a multiple session DVD. So why is there such a difference in size between system images backed up to the hard drive and a DVD? Can I trust a DVD?

By the way, I tried creating backup with Arconis True Image (I don't remember true name) and Norton Ghost 15 to a hard drive, and their images take about 3 GB. So if the real size of my system image is about 3 GB, then why did Windows backup on HDD take so much place?

It's Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit, by the way.

Backing Up Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit To 3TB External Drive Fails

Nov 26, 2011

Attempting to backup my HP laptop to my new Seagate Expansion 3TB plug and play external drive returns the error shown in the screenshot below. After searching Google for a solution it seems the backup utility in Windows 7 is not compatible with high capacity drives over 2.5TB. Am I understanding this correctly? How am I going to backup my laptop onto this drive?I did come across a proposed solution here but apparently this would prevent the drive from working with Windows XP. As I need to move file between the laptop and an XP machine this is not an option for me.There is approximately 126GB of data on the machine and the drive is brand new, formatted to NTFS and otherwise empty.Perhaps I need to use a third party software to backup?

Error When Backing Up With Windows Media Player Songs In Backup Drive

Nov 2, 2011

I've got all my music in an external drive. When i configured bakups i selected that same external drive as destination to back up to.

Now, i added the music from that drive to windows media player and now, when the computer backs up, i've got this error telling me some files were omitted (namely all the music) because they're on the same drive as the backup's destination.

I'm going to use WMP because it's already there (regardless of there being a million better choices of media players/managers) so don't bother suggesting otherwise.

My question is: is there any special folder i should avoid backing up so this error doesn't happen? (like the one that contains WMP database)

Some Files Encrypted Via EFS In HDD - How To Decrypt

Oct 28, 2012

I bought a new PC few days ago and tried to using old harddisk and OS with it and failed badly. After some unlucky tries, I bought new harddisk and installed windows 7 in it (my old OS was Windows 7 also). I also plugged old harddisk into new PC so, I have new harddisk and new OS and old hard disk and old OS in my PC. I can access my old files but when I try to copy my documents folder to new harddisk, it gives me an error like "access denied". After some research, I know it's EFS related because files are green (it means, it's encrypted). EFS, I can't access my own files, I tried to change ownership but it didn't worked for me. I also can't change encryption settings because of my old user is gone.

Simply,
- I have some files encrypted via EFS in my old hdd,
- I have all my user and windows files of my old OS (probably EFS certificate files),
- I know my old username and password.

How can I decrypt my files? Is it possible?
