Yesterday i copied a large folder 51gb into my external hardisk and I used windows 7. One file name was too long and I was prompted. I selected skip file. I remember seeing the folder in my hardisk after copy. But no longer there today. the space still occupied tried using programs like pci recovery. not found. The folder has many work files.
View 1 RepliesA folder has disappeared from an external hard drive, as confirmed by plugging it into another computer and checking, searching for several filenames it should contain on all possible drives (with hidden files shown), and searches with Recuva and testdisk of deleted files. There is no discrepancy between the size of the remaining folders and the reported size of the folder that contained it along with the remaining folders.
The drive in question is a 2TB WD Mybook external that may be showing its age- another folder had a cyclic redundancy check error, and the folder in question developed one several weeks later. I'm making plans to move my data off and have already duplicated the most important files on it.When the folder developed the CRC error mentioned in the previous paragraph, I ran scandisk. It was after running that utility that I found it had disappeared, so that is the most likely reason. However, the other folder remained (with error unfixed, eventually resolved by using testdisk to copy the folder to another drive.)
I have a 30 GB file on my desktop and I want to move it to an external hard drive. In Win 7 it just won't go! Cut/paste, move to, nothing. How can it be done?

View 1 Replies View Relateda number of backup copies of large files on external USB-connected NTFS drives differed from the source versions still on my hard drive. I also discovered that I could reproduce the issue with newly-copied files.Here are the specifics of the issue, following a series of experiments:
- On my system, copies of large files, files typically larger than 500MB, are corrupted (altered) roughly 30% of the time when copying them under Windows 7 64-bit to USB-connected NTFS-formatted external drives.
- No error occurs / no error message appears during the copy
- The file size of copy is always identical, whether or not data was altered during the copy process.
- File differences are confirmed via either the command-line "FC" command or a utility such as WinDiff
- The issue impacts copies made via the Windows GUI -OR- via command-line copy or xcopy
- The issue occurs with multiple external USB NTFS-formatted drives, no matter what make or model.
- Subsequent attempts to copy an affected file will ultimately yield an identical copy. This would seem to rule out interference by an external program such as an anti-virus program (and the only AV I am running is Microsoft Security Essentials)
- The USB drives involved pass error checks, and copies made to these drives on other (non Windows 7) systems produce identical copies
- So far, the third party utility "TeraCopy" manages to consistently produce clean copies, and therefore is a temporary workaround. This utility apparently works because it, by default, bypasses the NTFS memory caching operation used by the Windows 7 OS...a caching system which I have so far found no way of disabling.
- The problem does not appear to impact relatively small files (1 to 100MB or so). I have not found any particular threshold, but I have seen the issue impact numerous files in the 500MB neighborhood.
- The problem seems to date at least to the version of Windows 7 that was in release as far back as the Fall of 2010, as I discovered corrupted backup copies of files dating back that far. Again, the files are corrupted with respect to the original copy...NOT with respect to file structure itself.

View 1 Replies View RelatedClicking on a large folder in Explorer can cause a slowly-moving green progress bar. In some cases this can take several minutes to complete.
A common cause is thumbnail caching of image and video files, resulting from having properties | customize | "optimize this folder for:" set to pictures, vs documents or General items.
The most likely solution: in Explorer, right click on folder, select properties, customize, under "optimize this folder for:", select either General items, or documents. Set check box "Also apply this template to all subfolders", then click apply.
The slow progress bar is apparently caused by Explorer scanning the folder and all subfolders to pre-render thumbnail images for image and video files. This happens if the "optimize this folder" setting is pictures or videos. This happens when merely clicking on the top-level folder.
If "optimize this folder" is set to documents or General, the thumnails are not rendered until you actually click on the folder or sub-folder containing those.
This was discussed in another thread on this forum, but it was full of speculative remedies, and the actual cause and remedy was not posted until the last thread (and one year after the thread was started): Accessing drives in Windows Explorer takes a long time I'm creating this thread with a more exact title and concise description, to aid in finding the solution based on a symptom search.
While the above is the most likely cause of a slow Explorer progress bar, there are other possible causes. These include clicking on a remote folder on a slow network, general slowdown due to indexing, disk drive or filesystem caching disabled, disk drive retries due to impending hardware failure, corrupted video files or codec, etc.
I have noticed that my Windows folder is about 22 gigabytes. I have been getting frequent updates recently, could it be because of those ?

If you extract the icons from imageres.dll or shell32.dll then the maximum icon size is about 64x64 and 32x32 for most icons. I am trying to extract the largest icons, where can I get them.
View 14 Replies View RelatedMy client's computer was infected with a virus obtained via Facebook. I removed this and multiple other infections (and I'm pretty thorough with my scanning). She gets it back, starts working on it, and apparently her devices and printers icons are blank. Not missing, like with a "blank page" icon, just... blank. Here's the kicker: it only happens with large and extra large icons. It also happens with normal folder icons. When I change it to medium or lower, they come back. I've tried rebuilding the icon cache database several times, tried sfc /scannow, tried chkdsk, tried uninstalling any recent updates, etc... There have been no hardware changes, the hard drive has been tested as good (no bad sectors), her dual monitors are at a sane resolution, and I'm confident that the viruses has been removed.

Now I am quite a power user, and understand computer's quite well, but my laptop is just a year old (out of my warranty period), now how can this happen? Checked every other folder, to see if i had accidentally misplaced them. Then, i did the system restore. Well, I store the movies in folders, with the movie file (.mp4, .avi) and the subtitle file (.srt) in each of them. After the system restore, I got several movie folders back, but only with the subtitle files! I tried searching for the movies in the start menu.

I want to lock (password protect) some folders on the portable/external harddrive. I don't want aany encryption because I may forgot the password and may not be able to recover data. I use the program there came with the disk, WDSmartWare. It's OK, but i can't delete the backup. It sounds strange to delete a backup, but it's because it's an old backup from another computer.I've tried to delete the folder in Ubuntu which i've installed on a third-partition. It seems to work, but when i change to Windows there is a folder named .Trash-1000. I HAVE emptied the trash can in Ubuntu. If I rename the folder in Windows to f.x. "Delete me!", I can see it again in Ubuntu. Maybe I have to say that i've a bit problems when i have to remove the HDD from Ubuntu. It's says that there still is a process running, but the process doesn't stop. I've waited for an hour now. If I right click on the process and select "End task", Ubuntu works a few seconds and when it says "You can remove the movable disk now".
