Windows Folder Too Large? Updates Causing This?
Dec 15, 2012I have noticed that my Windows folder is about 22 gigabytes. I have been getting frequent updates recently, could it be because of those ?

View 6 Repliesi have a new install of my os onto my patriot pyro ssd. for the windows updates i just did a massive install, 77+ windows updates at one single time plus another 30+ or so the next day. i think i remember some errors while doing those massive updates, i did not look them up or even care about them. what is currently happening is that while using my computer for browsing and email, jtv ect, this is a fairly high end gaming pc but i am not playing any games currently nor does it crash while under stress, it seemed only while browsing. but what happened was that all of a sudden my Internet video froze from then firefox stopped responding. when i tried to click to another window like windows taskmanager or itunes those and any other program proceeded to crash and end up in the "blank" program has stopped responding, until eventually my whole os seemed to crash in the same way. nothing opened up or even closed. my whole desktop was in the unresponsive state.
View 3 Replies View Relatedmy windows 7 (32bits) folder on the C drive is too large (21.1 GB) is there a way to clean it up?
I have deleted temp files and also run the commands:
cleanmgr sageset:99 (Check all the boxes)
cleanmgr sagerun:99
still the same size.
I have just upgraded to Windows 7 and have discovered an annoyance with Windows Explorer. When I expand a folder's contents (tree) by clicking on the arrow icon, the entire contents of the left panel jump to the bottom of the visible screen (rather than just the subfolders expanding). The annoyance is that every time I expand a tree in the Explorer, I also have to scroll the contents of the left panel back up (because it jumped down). For example, in Vista, if I expanded a folder tree, only the sub folders would expand and move downward.

View 1 Replies View RelatedClicking on a large folder in Explorer can cause a slowly-moving green progress bar. In some cases this can take several minutes to complete.
A common cause is thumbnail caching of image and video files, resulting from having properties | customize | "optimize this folder for:" set to pictures, vs documents or General items.
The most likely solution: in Explorer, right click on folder, select properties, customize, under "optimize this folder for:", select either General items, or documents. Set check box "Also apply this template to all subfolders", then click apply.
The slow progress bar is apparently caused by Explorer scanning the folder and all subfolders to pre-render thumbnail images for image and video files. This happens if the "optimize this folder" setting is pictures or videos. This happens when merely clicking on the top-level folder.
If "optimize this folder" is set to documents or General, the thumnails are not rendered until you actually click on the folder or sub-folder containing those.
This was discussed in another thread on this forum, but it was full of speculative remedies, and the actual cause and remedy was not posted until the last thread (and one year after the thread was started): Accessing drives in Windows Explorer takes a long time I'm creating this thread with a more exact title and concise description, to aid in finding the solution based on a symptom search.
While the above is the most likely cause of a slow Explorer progress bar, there are other possible causes. These include clicking on a remote folder on a slow network, general slowdown due to indexing, disk drive or filesystem caching disabled, disk drive retries due to impending hardware failure, corrupted video files or codec, etc.
I need to split a folder containing several levels of subfolders into dvdr sizes for backup. I would like to retain not only the folder name but subfolders names.
Ex. C:PicturesSummer is 7gb and i would like to split it into C:folder1picturessummer and C:folder2my picturessummer
Any one know of a util? RAR/ZIP is an option but I would really like viewable access to the files on any disc. The folder I need to split is quite large 70GB.
I want to have a fresh install of windows 7.i dont want to download all the updates again that take so long.Is it possible to copy the software distribution folder from windows folder and manually install updates again in new installation.

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy client's computer was infected with a virus obtained via Facebook. I removed this and multiple other infections (and I'm pretty thorough with my scanning). She gets it back, starts working on it, and apparently her devices and printers icons are blank. Not missing, like with a "blank page" icon, just... blank. Here's the kicker: it only happens with large and extra large icons. It also happens with normal folder icons. When I change it to medium or lower, they come back. I've tried rebuilding the icon cache database several times, tried sfc /scannow, tried chkdsk, tried uninstalling any recent updates, etc... There have been no hardware changes, the hard drive has been tested as good (no bad sectors), her dual monitors are at a sane resolution, and I'm confident that the viruses has been removed.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just installed Win7 and installed the updates (recommended ones and critical ones) then I proceeded to go to sleep.Today I noticed on my biggest partition (I have one for the OS plus the 100+mb one it creates itself and one more for movies, games, etc named K) I have a folder named e8cdef2aaf8f6997dd.I remember this type of folder is left behind when .NET Framework is installed because the installer does not clean the temp folders after installation. However, there was something strange with it - within it there are some installers as well as other updates (please check the image with the contents of it). What I'm asking is, can I delete it? is it really just a temp folder or do I need to install them manually? cause I tried and it said the net framework 4 client was installed previously and that I cannot continue the installation until I clear the other installation and start from the beginning..

View 4 Replies View RelatedA few days ago, my computer stopped booting up. The splash screen for the mobo showed up, and then I would get a black screen w/ a white flashing cursor and nothing else. I put in my Win7 install disc to try to do a repair, and eventually figured out that if I change my boot sequence in the BIOS so that it goes to the DVD drive 1st and the boot hard drive last, it boots up just fine. I reset to the last recovery point, changed the BIOS back so it would boot from the hard drive 1st, and everything thing worked fine... until it installed the latest Win7 updates. After that, I had the exact same problems. So I changed the BIOS again as a temporary solution, and then I noticed that the computer wasn't sleeping properly. It used to turn off the display, the hard drives, the case fans, etc. Now, it turns off everything EXCEPT the case fans... which pretty much defeats the purpose of putting it in sleep mode.

I'm ready to take the battery out but wanted to check here first to find out what you think I should do.
Here is some add'l background. This laptop was experiencing issues w/the keyboard and mouse not working after a Windows update was applied a couple of months ago (didn't realize it at the time). I tried several things to try to fix it before I realized I could do a system restore and just go back to a time before the update was applied (sometime in Aug or Sept). I then shut off the automatic Windows updates and ran each update separately (there were about 16 critical and 6 recommended updates), rebooted and checking for issues in between each update. I should have written down exactly which update this was (I believe it was from Oct 9 and related to security issues w/Microsoft Windows).
what I can do to get my laptop to respond again??
My laptop, since a few monthes has been having BSOD crashes repeatidly. I have tried and installed windows many times, and after each install, it would run properly for 3 weeks, then blue screens start to appear. Eventually i recieve BSOD errors and their rate of appearence increases with time, untill windows completely fails to start and crashes just when the microsoft logo appears. I then install a new windows, and the problem repeats itself. I have tried to look for online help, but i find that each forumsite gives a different reason. This time bluescreens have started to appear and just as i log into windows, a BSOD appears, so i had no solution other than copying the minidump files and generating a report (see attachments), although i know it wouldn't be as accurate.Info (failing windows): 7 Proffesional 64 bit, Toshiba E205.Note: The drivers of devices in that windows were all installed. I ran a memory diagnostics test and therefore i don;t suspect faulty ram to be the reason.

I've narrowed it down i hope. After saving an Audacity *.aup file, and trying to reopen it, she freezes to where the mouse no longer moves and a CAD is impossible. Found out that Windows Audio Service (or one of it's dependancies) were causing it. Upon stopping WAS, the file was openable, but not playable, for the audio device was shut off. The freeze is only triggered by opening that audacity file. Elsewhere, it's random, sometimes with audio playing, sometimes not. Audacity also sometimes crashes while recording. Tried to repair my drivers, but windows says they're all the freshest bunch of audio drivers there are for my particular device.

Once they find the Pop-Up and just close it (without entering any credentials) the report opens, however many users are unaware of this step or do not notice the pop-up and are therefore unable to proceed. Can anyone shed some light on why this log-in prompt is coming up and how I can get rid of it. Even though it requests user-id and password, simply closing it allows you to proceed so it is not serving any purpose other than to frustrate our users.
