I tried to shut down my Dell inspiron when it said it needed to update some things and not to turn it off. Without realizing it I pushed the off button and now, everytime I try to turn it on it just shows the Dell logo and then the windows logo and goes to q black screen with a flashing underscore in the top left
View 3 RepliesI encountered this problem two days ago while using my computer (hp pavilion elite) and it sht off on it's own. I tried to restart and it won't boot windows. Just a black screen with a flashing cursor at the top. I searched all over these forums and haven't found a solution that works. So far I have done a restore point, tried to reinstall windows from a recovery disk, I've used command prompt to Fix the boot record. Diagnostics says my hard drive is fine and I can see the newly installed windows 7 on my hard drive via the recovery disk boot. But when I try to boot from hard drive it still goes black.
View 1 Replies View RelatedToday I started up my pc and after the BIOS screen (the place where you can press f8-f11 for various options) it went to a black screen with a blinking underscore in the upper left corner and stayed there indefinitely. It did this even after reboot.
I tried using the diagnostic tool and everything it tested passed (including HDD). I did this test twice and the same results were produced.
I also googled for similar problems (one topic mentioned that the op disassembling his computer and physically tapping a chip on the motherboard caused it to work) but I have no experience with taking apart my computer and i do not want to break it accidentally. I did however chance upon a topic advising him to do a CMOS reset which apparently helped that op, so i looked through the various options on the BIOS page. There was one option (f10 I think) mentioning CMOS on its fourth sub-window, so i pressed the reset option but I'm mot entirely sure if I used the right function.
I uninstalled kaspersky pure and replaced kaspersky pure for kaspersky anti-virus yesterday, dont know if this was the cause. I am using windows 7 64 bit.
Have my Dad's Fujitsu Esprimo laptop to uninstall Searchqu, Bandoo etc for him which were causing problems. That went fine, computer shut down and tried to install Windows updates. Now won't restart.Hangs on Fujitsu screen with options for "<ESC>: Diagnostic Screen, <F2>:BIOS Setup, <F12>: Boot Menu" and Blue progress bar. Progress reaches about 75% complete VERY slowly (hour) but then hangs on black screen with white cursor in top left corner. Been like that for 2 hours now.Have tried solutions from Google - click F2 then re-setting boot order in Bios to "default order", click F12 and choose different options, tried F8 for safe mode, but F8 doesn't do anything.I don't know if it's related to Searchqu, to the updates or if it's just a creepy coincidence and the computer itself is actually broken. He doesn't have a Windows7 installation cd.
View 5 Replies View RelatedA few days ago I made a clean wipe on my Toshiba laptop, and installed Windows 7 Home Premium x86 as my OS. After installing the OS on my laptop, I proceeded to let windows update check for automatic updates and install them. After installing some updates, I clicked to have my computer reboot. After rebooting it showed the Toshiba screen with the F2, F12 options but after that it goes straight to a black screen with a white underscore. I pressed the power button to turn off then back on my computer and proceeded to press first F2 but it went back to the black screen with a white underscore, then restarted again pressing F12 went to the black screen again, restarted one more time pressing F8 for safe mode but nothing works.

PC name, network etc) but after it said it was preparing for first startup, nothing boots. After restarting.. besides the startup Acer screen, there is only a black screen with a blinking underscore at the top left. Whats happening :S?
I've tried F2 and running a setup but it just shows me some specs and such

I just upgraded to Windows 7 on my Toshiba Satellite Special Edition laptop that came with Vista 64bit and the other night i downloaded iTunes 10 and told me to restart my machine so I clicked ok and then my laptop shut off and when it came back on the Toshiba screen came up as usual but seemed to stay on longer than normal then it goes to a black screen with a underscore that blinks for a few moments then becomes solid. Ive tried to use the "F" keys to get different boot options because i have the windows 7 ISO disc and a ubuntu disc that I could use but whatever i try my laptop wont process it just does the same thing over and over again and bever proceeds to the actually boot up windows.

Today I noticed that in between my MSI BIOS logo screen and the Win7 booting animation I get a flashing underscore on a black screen for maybe a second. I know this is a noob question but is this something normal I've just never noticed? The last time I saw something like this the system would only boot to a blinking underscore because the drive failed and I needed to replace it, so I'm a bit paranoid.
Mobo- MSI 890fx-GD70
CPU- Phenom II X4 970 (overclocked to 3.8 via multiplier only)
Ram- 8GB Crucial Ballistix ddr3 1333 (not overclocked)
HDD- Seagate 500GB Barracuda boot drive
Recently I got this problem on my Acer Aspire 5742G where my laptop gets stuck on black screen with a flashing underscore at the top left corner right after the Acer splash screen. I can get into Bios but I can't get into safe mode (normally I could press F8 to get into Advanced Boot Options but this no longer works).
The problem started when I decided to try out Windows 8 Preview a few days ago. I managed to set up dual boot windows 7 home premium/windows 8 preview and it worked fine. But I only gave 20GB to the windows 8 partition and I decided I needed more. I thought it's a simple matter to transfer space by shrinking the volume of the win7 partition, format the new unallocated space and extend the volume of the win8 partition. But after I did this, all the partitions apart from the recovery one became "simple partitions" instead of "primary partitions". I don't know the difference between the two terms and I didn't think it was a problem so I just turned off the laptop once I finished with it. The next time I turned it on the problem started. Could this have caused problems with the hard drive? It's the only thing I can think of that caused the problem.
Unfortunately I can't find my recovery disc either.
when my windows 7 ultimate computer starts up, the screen flashes black, just for a second which is ok. But if i enable aero and use the aero effects then the computer screen flashes black for a second again, everytime i use any aero effect! e.g minimize, thumbnails, show desktop, open files.
I upgraded from windows vista.
my cousins also have windows 7 ultimate and they use the aero effects without any problems.
their computer has A NVIDA G-Force, but not sure about the model, although it will be quite new because they bought their computer a week ago.
is it because of my graphics card? i checked the windows 7 upgrade advisor and it said my graphics card is compatible.

I am having trouble with my Toshiba Sattelite MG45. When I turn it on, I get a black screen with a flashing cursor. I have tried the F8 method, nothing happens. Also, I am running Windows 7 with an Intel Core. I am by no means tech savy.

OK the other night I shut down my system and all seemed fine until next day. I went to reboot and got the normal Dell splash screen with both the Set Up (F2) and Boot (F12) options. After the Dell screen finished it then went to load Windows, but instead I got a Black Screen with Flashing Cursor. Can't move cursor at all.
On the Dell screen I can access the Set Up (F2) bios pages. I can also access the Boot Options (F12) Page. What I can not gain access to is the Restore (F8) menus.
I did not know to make any sort of boot disk or boot repair disk so I do not have either of these and I do not know of anyone who is using windos 7 that could make me one to use. Also Dell puts the rstore on the hard drive so onlyhave a MS Works CD and a Drivers & Utilities CD l ran the diagnostics utility but forgot to plug in my computer so when it was almost done the battery must have died so will redo the test later as tired tonight as been up half the night with this issue. But for memory the first 6 of the 8 memories areas it was scanning tested fine. Will post an update later today when Iget chance to run the whole thing again!!
I know others have had this screen. Is there a solution as have spent the last day or so googling it and seems very mixed results depending on the user and their own case with this black screen w/cursor.Some have said bad hard drive (I HOPE NOT THE CASE FOR ME AT LEAST!!!) Some have said bad mother board. Some have said virus or malware Some have referenced a software update both Microsofts and also specific computer companies. So what can I do to get to my files at least to back them up that is providing the drive is OK! I do know from the boot menu my hard drive is showing in the boot menus. Does this mean that the drives OK but maybe a corrupted boot area or something?
I have an Acer aspire 5733-6607 with Intel Core i3 CPU 2.40GHz.
My mom was on it playing a game on the internet and stepped away to wash dishes when she came back it was on the black screen with the blinking cursor in the top left corner. I tried system repair disc, the recovery disc that it had me make when I first got the laptop and windows defeender offline nothing worked. I tried F8 and it goes to the black screen with acer and where I can press F2 or F12 and then back to screen with blinking cursor. I tried restoring default settings in the F2 menu also.
Earlier this week my HP desktop forced shutdown while browsing the Internet using IE9. Upon reboot the HP screen loaded, afterwards a black screen with a flashing cursor appeared. I had used CTRL+ALT+DEL function in which my computer rebooted.Showed the HP screen and immediately showed the black screen with a flashing cursor. Again no mouse cursor was available. I performed a diagnostics check in which the CPU, HDD, etc. checked out, restored BIOS to factory settings, even placing the HDD as priority 1. I inserted the Windows recovery disk and attempted a start up repair, and a restore point with no favorable results. Through the recovery disks command prompt I accessed all my music and documents, so I assume the hard drive is still functioning. I'm thinking as a last resort of performing a repartitioning of my hard drive and performing a clean install of Windows 7.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was messing around with the settings trying to get a more clear pricutre, and now the desktop doesn't show any icons, no menu bar, and the background is partially cut out all around (like it's stretched to the original picture size). When I use ctrl alt delete the tv just goes black.The main problem is I can't use the main screen to adjust anything because my friend cracked it bad enough to where I can't make anything out.I have no problems using my friend's 40" tv, so I tried adjusting the resolution to a smaller size, but when I plug it back into the smaller tv it still doesn't work.I think this started happening when I changed some stuff in Asus Utilities Extended Desktop, but disabling that doesn't work.

Just shows me a black screen which fades back to a icon-less desktop. Solutions regarding finding explorer.exe and running it to show desktop icons don't work either.Just pops out the explorer window showing the desktop.And don't even start on right clicking desktop and select show icons.... cause that's the first thing I tried. System restore in safe mode yielded no results. Virus and malware scans turn up a clean bill. I'm only short of reformatting the pc, and I'm not even sure if I'm able to run the reformat from windows.

No pointer, if I push crtl, alt, delete, it just attempts to reboot. No other key does anything. I have removed the battery, unplugged the computer, but still get the same results. I have windows 7 and when I go to start the laptop up it shows the HP screen then goes to the windows screen like its loading but then goes back to the hp logo and is stuck. I ran a HDD test and memory test those came back good. I tried to go into safe mode it acts like it loading then shows a blank screen. I try to do a system recovery and system restore the screen stays blank. I also took the battery out and press the power button down but that hasn't work. It's no longer under warrenty.

Everytime i turn on the laptop, i see windows starting up, then i am prompted to enter my administrator password. after entering my password, the screen goes black and all i see is the white cursor. I tried removing the battery, then unpluging the wall power and holding the power button for 2 minutes and replacing the plug, turning on the computer and replacing the battery, but this is not working.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy laptop (Asus A52F) starting acting up about a week ago. It seems to be seizing and then black-screening if I have it do anything more than one small task. For example it often freezes up during scans, when I plug in a hard drive or if I try to download absolutely anything and then I have to force shut down by holding the power button.I've tried running a few different virus/malware scans (Super Anti Spyware, Ad-aware and Malware Bytes) and they found a couple little things but the compuet has still been acting up.
I've tried keeping an eye on the task manager while trying anything that usually freezes the computer and I'm seeing any jumps in the CPU. I've attempted to do a system restore as well but there is no restore point to use.
Once I turn on my laptop my whole screen goes black. I can hear the starting sound but i can see anything. Toshiba satellite Laptop.
