How Network Printers Work In Windows
Jun 1, 2012
how network printers work in Windows? Is there only one way of setting these up, or several ways? Do I have to have a driver for the specific printer on the client? Why can't the material be sent to the server in some device independent format (Postscript??), and converted to printer commands on the server? Do I have to have a driver for the specific printer on the server? If the driver is on the client, presumably it's talking directly to the printer (using the server only as a means of communication) using the printer's own command codes, so I don't see why the server needs a driver... Under what circumstances can or can't the client download the driver from the server? What happens if the client and server are running different versions of Windows, either an older version on the client, or an older version on the server? What happens if the client is running 64-bit and the server 32-bit, or vice versa? What happens if there is no driver available for the newer version of Windows (which might be the client, or the server), because the printer is quite old?

I have a Windows 7 Pro 64bit SP1 laptop that for over a year was happily on our hardwired work workgroup. A couple of weeks ago I formatted the laptop and ever since I am able to see and use the networked printers but can't see any computers on the network through the Network section on the Windows 7 pc.I am so blocked out that even my own pc, which does show up in networking, rejects my connection attempts.I can access the internet.I can ping other pcs.I can remote access to other pcs.I only can't access shares and browse other pcs.The other pcs on the network are a combination of WinXp and Win server 2003.I have tried the network sharing and registry edit fixes that are regularly proposed. I have turned off the win firewall and uninstalled Norton.

I can't get my HP LaserJet 4 Plus parallel printer to work via USB to my new laptop with Windows 7 Premium 64 bit. My HP DeskJet 820 Cse doesn't work either. On eBay, I bought a USB to parallel printer cable adapter (Pluscom). Windows says it is working correctly, but nothing happens when connecting one of these two printers.First I tried to print with the LaserJet: nothing. Then the DeskJet: nothing. I'm even unable to edit the properties of the DeskJet: Windows tells me that the print spooler is not working (I don't receive this error message while choosing the LaserJet).A system restore to some days earlier (before I installed the printers) is also failing; Windows tells me this is because of antivirus (Avira free antivirus, up-to-date).

i just bought 3 new laptop computers, 2 hp's and one toshiba, all with windows 7. i set up a wireless network using a netgear wnb2000 router. then i got a canon pixma 560 printer, and when that didn't work an hp c4795 printer. now the hp printers wont work. after spending 6 hours on the phone with hp support, they say its a windows 7 firewall issue that won't let my computers speak to the printer via the router. has anyone had this problem, and more importantly, does anyone know of a solution?

I am using a Windows 2008 R2 domain controller and File Server. Whenever I add a network printer I always make sure the "List in the Directory" (meaning Active Directory) is checked under the sharing tab in the properties of each printer. On Windows XP machines I can go through the add printer wizard and it finds all printers in the domain. On windows 7 professional clients when I got to Add Printer then select "Add a Network, Wireless, or Bluetooth printer" it does not find any network printers from my file server. I have the file and print sharing enabled on the Windows 7 clients and the File Server.

Problem:We have around 15 printers on site all running off the network, static IP's the usual setup. For some reason since we have upgraded the computers to Windows 7 64 bit the printers have been acting up.We have an intermittant problem where some users get an error 'unable to print with the current print setup' or when trying to install a printer they can get 'Windows cannot connect to the printer. Operation could not be completed' (0x0000002). To quickly resolve the problem we need to stop and start the spooler service, once this is done everything works fine but it repeats itself again.Solutions Tried:We have checked the drivers on the server changing them to universal drivers, changed drivers on the machines, rebuilt machines, added admin privlidges etc all which do not seem to have any effect. I have tried hotfixes from MS (KB981070-v2 & KB982728) with no result, searched the web but am unable to find a solution, our setup is Server 2003 and computers all run windows 7 64 bit.

I have installed the following printers: Epson LX-300+II, HP Laserjet 1010, HP Colour Lasterjet 1515, Canon IP5200.
The printers work and are all displayed from Word, IE, etc, but only one printer shows up in Windows 7 Devices & Printers - usually whichever is selected as default printer. If I remove the displayed printer, it shows me another one. When I first installed, it showed me all the printers, but problems started after I had to remove and reinstall my printers.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit Control Panel -> Devices and Printers show some printers (PDF995 and Microsoft XPS Document Writer) but it does not show my HP OfficeJet 4500. Applications (like IE or Firebird) show it in the list of printer and can print to it.
Edit: I forgot to mention, I am running in the Administrator account and both the laptop and the printer on the same WiFi router. The printer showed up in Device Manager after I clicked Display Hidden Devices (kind of silly to hide devices from the Administrator.)

I can see that my home network is there but windows fails to connect to it. I've been though the troubleshooter but nothing seems to work. Now the reason why I know this network works is because my mother and sisters laptop works fine on the network. Also I does sometimes work. If I'm in the same room as router is seems to work fine. But when I'm in the other end of the house it fails to connect even though windows says it has 3-4 bars of the wifi signal. Also on a less important note, when if actually connects the bars on the taskbar only shows it full wifi signal even it it only has 3 or 4.

(the bytes sent and received). It seems skype calls and watching in browser videos shoot them up into the billions after a few hours +. Upon googling around i am quite alarmed. Why did my network randomly change to "network 3"? A few weeks ago it just said 'network'?

A friend just got a new laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium. He had an old desktop computer with an external drive for backups. He is thinking of getting a new router with a USB port so that he can connect the external drive to the router and then setup automated backups to that drive from the new laptop. Will the built-in backup program in Windows 7 HP work with a network drive?

When I boot up my Windows 7 Professional x64 machine I get that balloon that states "Could not reconnect all network drives". How do I get rid of this? I am hard wired into the network (not wireless) and I cannot find a way around it.
All the solutions I have found state its either due to wireless network authentication occuring late in the boot process (but im hard wired) or that you need to upgrade to a Pro edition of windows (which I cam using).
It is not disasterous if I am being honest its just mildly irritating

I recently changed ISPs, and in the process decided to upgrade my router as I have been wanting a gigabit one.Well everything went fine, set up all my PCs as required (needed to forward a few ports for a few applications).I have two Windows 7 Ultimate x64 PCs, which I have networked together. I am able to login with a remote desktop connection just fine, I am able to access the homegroup section fine too. But the section under "Network" doesn't work. Well it works in that I can see PC1 and PC2, but if I click on the remote PC.I get the error: \PD-PC is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The remote procedure call failed and did not execute. They are on the same router and subnet, and wired if it matters. They are actually the only two things plugged into it, all other PCs use the FiOS provided router. My router is the D-Link DGL4100.No third party firewalls, just the Windows one (and the router one). Prior to the change in routers, everything worked fine.I have searched around the internet, and almost every thread I go to seems to have a different "fix" for this, none have worked for me.

I just finished building a new PC and installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit today.I have an ASUS Wireless PCI Express Adapter (PCE-N13 802.11 b/g/n). DSL, with a Linksys rounter. Theres just a red X mark on the taskbar and it won't show any open connections =/. I have several wireless devices that work even outside the range which is about maybe 5 meters away from the router. Its pretty much impossible for me to run a wired connection to my PC and need to have a wireless one since theres many tables/couches/chairs inbetween the router and my new PC.

I am running Windows 7 on six computers. I can see all of the six and they can see mine. I have finally figured out through some internet research, how to get their computers to access mine. However, when I go from my computer to theirs, I get asked to enter a network password. All of the password protection is off. It's saying something I'm not understanding underneath the user name and password request boxes. It says Domain: and has my PC name on it. How can I get the access to go on their PC's?

I have a Canon MX850 all-in-one printer/scanner. I cannot for the life of me get networking scanning to work on Windows 7 x64 7100. Windows 7 detects the network printer, but for whatever reason I can't get the scanning to work over network. If anyone has some good instructions for setting this up, let me know. I've tried Canon's IJ Scan Utility, but it finds no scanners. I've installed the driver manually, but then Device Manager just says "Canon MX850 ser Network", but I think it is supposed to include the IP address in the device name.

The way i connect to my XP network is i open explorer and click on the Network folder icon. Then i wait for the green search bar to do it's thing at the top of the screen and when it detects the XP computer, it will show XP under Network and i can access it.Well it stopped. No matter how many times I clicked on Network the green search bar only searched once after a reboot and it would not find the XP drive. After searching I found that you could open the drive by typing in the start menu's search bar, \NAME. This worked fine, so I am able to access the drive but why don't it work with the Network folder in Explorer anymore? After I open the xp drive this way, it will then magically pop up under the Network folder but not before. Also is there a way to create a shortcut to this drive? I don't see that option by right clicking on it.

I have a Windows 7 laptop connected via a WRT54G2 wireless router to an XP SP3 desktop. Both the laptop and desktop can see shared resources and both can connected to the internet.
In the Laptop's Network and Sharing Center, however, things are not correct. The Laptop has two connections to the router, lan and wireless. The lan's connection appears OK, but I cannot generate a map. I get "Windows cannot discover any computer or device." The wireless network is public.
I don't know why and I don't know how to change it. Also, when I try to create a new network connection, the laptop sees only a WRT160N router (which I don't have; perhaps I did a while ago, when the laptop ran Vista). No place to add a new one.
I have Cisco's Network Magic and it can correct see everything, including the right router.

I installed Windows 7 RC 64bit on my Ausus Striker II Formula Motherboard (Nforce 780sli) and everything was working sweet.
I attempted to do a System Transfer from my old Windows Vista 64bit (where you transfer your documents etc.), this appeared to go well however now my network connection will not work. DHCP or Static IP settings dont work. I am unable to change the 'unidentified' network's location from public.
Any ideas from anyone?
I am close to reinstalling.

I have TWO computers on a "home" network (Work group, NOT Win 7 Homegroup).Computer A is new and runs Windows 7 Home Premium. Computer B is "old" and runs Windows XP Professional. Computer A has two printers attached; Epson Stylus Photo R200 and a Lexmark X3690. Both of these printers work well with Computer AComputer B has an HP LaserJet printer on the parallel port LPT1. Computer A can print documents to the LaserJet on PC B as well as photos and documents to the Epson and Lexmark printers. Computer B can print to to the laserjet and the Lexmark BUT NOT the Epson. When I try to "add" the Epson to the printers on PC B there is a message that computer A does not have the correct driver for the printer. The same message occurred when I initially "added" the Lexmark to PC B, but I was able using the CD supplied with the Lexmark to located the 32bit driver and load it onto PC A.
I tried to do the same thing with the Epson but failed to find the driver on the CD. I have tried downloading a 32 bit Epson driver from the Epson site, (using compatability mode) but even after doing that I cannot add the Epson printer to Computer B - the same message that PC-A does not have the correct driver.
