Windows 7 PC Can't Access Work-group Pcs But Can Use Printers
Jan 7, 2013
I have a Windows 7 Pro 64bit SP1 laptop that for over a year was happily on our hardwired work workgroup. A couple of weeks ago I formatted the laptop and ever since I am able to see and use the networked printers but can't see any computers on the network through the Network section on the Windows 7 pc.I am so blocked out that even my own pc, which does show up in networking, rejects my connection attempts.I can access the internet.I can ping other pcs.I can remote access to other pcs.I only can't access shares and browse other pcs.The other pcs on the network are a combination of WinXp and Win server 2003.I have tried the network sharing and registry edit fixes that are regularly proposed. I have turned off the win firewall and uninstalled Norton.

I am running Windows 7 on six computers. I can see all of the six and they can see mine. I have finally figured out through some internet research, how to get their computers to access mine. However, when I go from my computer to theirs, I get asked to enter a network password. All of the password protection is off. It's saying something I'm not understanding underneath the user name and password request boxes. It says Domain: and has my PC name on it. How can I get the access to go on their PC's?

how network printers work in Windows? Is there only one way of setting these up, or several ways? Do I have to have a driver for the specific printer on the client? Why can't the material be sent to the server in some device independent format (Postscript??), and converted to printer commands on the server? Do I have to have a driver for the specific printer on the server? If the driver is on the client, presumably it's talking directly to the printer (using the server only as a means of communication) using the printer's own command codes, so I don't see why the server needs a driver... Under what circumstances can or can't the client download the driver from the server? What happens if the client and server are running different versions of Windows, either an older version on the client, or an older version on the server? What happens if the client is running 64-bit and the server 32-bit, or vice versa? What happens if there is no driver available for the newer version of Windows (which might be the client, or the server), because the printer is quite old?

I can't get my HP LaserJet 4 Plus parallel printer to work via USB to my new laptop with Windows 7 Premium 64 bit. My HP DeskJet 820 Cse doesn't work either. On eBay, I bought a USB to parallel printer cable adapter (Pluscom). Windows says it is working correctly, but nothing happens when connecting one of these two printers.First I tried to print with the LaserJet: nothing. Then the DeskJet: nothing. I'm even unable to edit the properties of the DeskJet: Windows tells me that the print spooler is not working (I don't receive this error message while choosing the LaserJet).A system restore to some days earlier (before I installed the printers) is also failing; Windows tells me this is because of antivirus (Avira free antivirus, up-to-date).

i just bought 3 new laptop computers, 2 hp's and one toshiba, all with windows 7. i set up a wireless network using a netgear wnb2000 router. then i got a canon pixma 560 printer, and when that didn't work an hp c4795 printer. now the hp printers wont work. after spending 6 hours on the phone with hp support, they say its a windows 7 firewall issue that won't let my computers speak to the printer via the router. has anyone had this problem, and more importantly, does anyone know of a solution?

I've got a brand new Asus G53jw-A1. I took some settings from my old Asus m50vm-B1 when I bought it. Now when I try to print, the G53 is using the settings of the m50vm and gives me an error saying it can't find a computer named m50vm-B1.
I'm hooking up the G53 to a HP Deskjet 6988 via USB and it won't print or even let me go to Devices and Printers so I can delete all the printers and let Windows recognize them fresh.
I tried searching my registry for all keys "m50vm-B1" and deleted them, then restarted.

I have an HP Pavilion dm4t-2100 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, the OS with which it was installed. I am connected to a Homegroup which also contains a laptop and two desktops.I am able to connect through the network to the other laptop and remotely view files and devices on that laptop. However, I cannot see past the names of the two desktops. This means I cannot read or write files on or install devices connected to either desktop computer. The desktops can see each other and both laptops (R/W).The laptops can see each other (R/W), but neither one can see either desktop ("Cannot find the network path"; ping command fails). Is there a setting I can change either on the laptops or on the desktops to enable connectivity? All computers on the network are running genuine copies of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit as their original OS.

I currently have a workgroup set up with a server (running Server 2008) and 4 identical (literally) computers. Each computer has certain shared files. There is no problem seeing or accessing the files on these computers.I am trying to add a fifth computer to the workgroup. I have added the new computer and can see the other 4 computers. However, every time I try to access any of the other 4 computers on the workgroup, I am asked for my network username and password. It doesn't matter what I put for the username and password - nothing works. It continues to say "Logon failure: unknown username or bad password".

I am looking for a way to prevent writing to all removable devices. I have found the setting in group policy and enabled it. However, admin credentials are requested and if entered correctly, the user can write to the external drive. I want to configure this to allow writing to a removable device ONLY if the user is in the correct security group or a member of the domain administrators. In other words, this policy would apply to all users and be denied to the security group. We are still in a 2003 domain, although most of our DCs are now Windows 2008 R2. This policy would apply only to users logging in to our Windows 7 machines.

I'm creating a local group policy to lock down a Windows 7 Pro Workstation for use in the Staff room. It's the first time I've used it, previously I've worked a bit with AD. but I've been following on line tutorials and using google and I'm nearly there with it.But I'm stuck on one thing. My approach has been to remove access to pretty much everything apart from IE, Firefox and Skype icons on the task bar. I've got the start menu empty apart from the shutdown button, which is what I want but at the top of the start menu is the users icon/picture thing and if i click on it it takes me to "user accounts". I can't for the life of me work out how to get rid of the picture or just stop this happening.

I have installed the following printers: Epson LX-300+II, HP Laserjet 1010, HP Colour Lasterjet 1515, Canon IP5200.
The printers work and are all displayed from Word, IE, etc, but only one printer shows up in Windows 7 Devices & Printers - usually whichever is selected as default printer. If I remove the displayed printer, it shows me another one. When I first installed, it showed me all the printers, but problems started after I had to remove and reinstall my printers.

I have a Windows XP desktop - wired to my Motorola router/modem from AT$T for a while. I been able to run a Vista Desktop and a Windows 7 Premium Home with no problem. I got the A V Guardonline spam ware. I was able to clean it up using Combo Fix and Malware Byte. After Combo Fix - at first I didn't an Internet connection. I had to go off. When I came back decided to check the Internet before I deleted the network driver. However, it turns out the Internet fine and I can still see and access my Vista computer on the network. However now the Windows XP Peer to Peer network doesn't see my Windows 7 laptop. The laptop and see the network and connect. However it can only see the vista desktop and not the Windows XP and even though it connects no Internet access. In network and sharing it shows unidentified network public. I think this should be set to HOME. How can I do this? I have Windows 7 Premium so I can't use secpol.msc. What to do? I have turned off all feature or services with the Home Group. My IP address is 169.254.141.68. I know that means I not getting a valid IP address. Also when I on Windows 7 laptop in network and sharing - I connect to my network - it sees it but then says it can't connect but when I check it is connected. It sending and receiving bytes but it can't ping or see the router.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit Control Panel -> Devices and Printers show some printers (PDF995 and Microsoft XPS Document Writer) but it does not show my HP OfficeJet 4500. Applications (like IE or Firebird) show it in the list of printer and can print to it.
Edit: I forgot to mention, I am running in the Administrator account and both the laptop and the printer on the same WiFi router. The printer showed up in Device Manager after I clicked Display Hidden Devices (kind of silly to hide devices from the Administrator.)

I'm having a problem with networking a new Windows 7 laptop with a Vista workstation. The problem is with the Windows 7 laptop. While I can access the Windows 7 laptop from tne Vista workstation, I cannot access the V station from my laptop. It shows the complete network, but cannot access the work station, telling me that my modem is at fault, which is not true. Any ideas how I can persuade my Windows 7 Laptop to access the network which it shows, and access my workstation files?

I have an HP, p6710f, AMD Athlon II X4 640 processor with Windows 7 Home Premium on my desktop, as well as on my HP laptop. I am a medical transcriptionist, so I access a secure website to work. Suddenly my desktop will not access the site, but my laptop will. Tech support from my company did a remote access on my computer and could not figure anything out. I took it to a computer shop, they removed a virus (which they said was nothing major), and were able to access the website. I got my computer back but it still will not access the website. I made sure my modem/router firmware is up to date, but the laptop uses that as well. The interesting thing is my computer will not ping the website I work on, nor will the laptop, but yet the laptop connects and works but the desktop will not. Any ideas why this would happen or what could have changed on my desktop? Oh I will say that I restored my desktop, as did tech support, to a week earlier when it was working fine

I'm having an annoying problem. With my desktop computer I'm unable to access the webmail login for my work website. I'm not positive, but I thought it might be due to the full version trial of Malwarebytes that I installed. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Malwarebytes using Revo Uninstaller, and now have just the standard version, and I still have the problem.
I can access my work website (except for the webmail login), but when I try to ping my work website I get "general failure" results. I also get "general failure" results when pinging the webmail login.I can access the webmail login through my laptop. The reason I think it might be Malwarebytes is because from what I remember random websites stopped loading after I opted for the full version trial.I tried disabling Windows Firewall and Security Essentials real time scanning I've tried to access the webmail login using Firefox, Chrome and IE and none worked. I've tried using my cell phone as a modem to bypass the router and that didn't work.

I have a number of printers on the same port ( different versions of PCL5 , PCL6, and PS drives ). In the Windows 7 Control Panel "Devices and Printers" a whole slew of versions are missing and only the latest printer installed on that port is shown. But if I open up a Print.. dialog from any of my applications the names of all the Printers are there from which I can choose.
Why does not the Control Panel "Devices and Printers" show all my printers in Windows 7 ? Under Windows Vista I can see all of them.

Right let me start of with saying it is a zebra ups thermal lp 2844 printer which is connected to the server.it works fine with all the xp machines ( about 15 of them )we have just got in 4 new windows 7 machines, 2 running 32 bit and 2 running 64 bit.i get different error messages between the 32bit and 64bit machines.Let me walk you through, on BOTH machines i go:start > devices and printers > add printer >add network, wireless or Bluetooth device.it then searches, "connecting to ups thermal 2844 on server" windows cannot connect to the printer. cannot create a file when that file already exists. windows cant find a driver for ups thermal 2844 on th network. to locate on manually, click ok. otherwise click cancel and consult your network administrator or the printer manufactorers website. So i then click ok and point to the correct file, which results in the following message: windows cannot locate a suitable printer driver. contact your administrator for help loading and installing a suitable driver. The driver i am trying to use is a new windows 7 driver which i downloaded from zebra.com: ( Driver - Search Results)i have also tried all the drivers we have on our server for these machines and also tried the disk that it comes with.
