Hard Drive Replacement Killed The Laptop?
Dec 26, 2012
alright, I'm posting on behalf of a friend(doing chat on facebook..), who is trying to replace the harddrive on a windows 7 laptop.now.. installation of the new drive did not go to plan, so he tried to put the old one in, and the computer apparently took this as cause to commit seppeku if you will.we have tried everything, up to and including testing for a bad mobo, which I suspect it is.all he's getting is a power light, not even the screen's backlight is coming up.

I was wondering, if I got a new 500gb internal drive cause my old one is bad, would I be able to transfer everything (Including my seven install) onto the new drive? and if yes, how would I go about doing so?

In my 8 years of serious computing, I have never had to replace a HDD but I am going to have to do it for the first time sometime earlier next week when the new one along with the recovery media from Acer gets here.I have managed to locate a service manual for my Acer Notebook model series here. The new HDD is a WD500BPKT @ 7200RPM The old HDD is a WD3200BEVT-22ZCT0 @ 5400RPM Will I need to install new drivers (SCSI etc.) or anything else, or is it a simple plug-and-play operation once the recovery media is booted off of the disks and installed?I suspect I will need to change the BIOS Boot Order so that the opticle drive is first rather than IDE 0 to get the disks to come up, so that's a non-issue.

I just need your expert opinion on this matter before I call Dell back. Apparently my Hard drive went out on my new computer (6 mos.old) and, I guess a possible Motherboard problem as well, because the Dell tech told me they were sending a Hard drive & a motherboard to a service tech near me. Anyway, the tech came out with only the Hard drive. When I ask him where the Motherboard was, he didn't know anything about a motherboard.Dell did not send him one. He went ahead and installed the Hard drive & every thing seems to be working fine now for 4 days so far. My concern is, do you think my computer would still work ok if it has a faulty motherboard too? My warranty will be up in about 6 months & just want to make sure. I have a message to call Dell back & let them know how my service call went, but Just wanted your opinion before I do. Should I insist on a new motherboard?

My Dell 1525 Windows 7 laptop had begun to experience more and more frequent hard drive errors. So, in an effort to fend off total disaster, I purchased a new hard drive. The new drive was slightly larger than the old one (250GB vs 160GB). With a week old backup in hand, I used Acronis to do a disk CLONE to the new drive in an external enclosure. I was able to do it without any apparent drive errors. I then swapped drive for drive and rebooted. My most frequent apps worked fine, network access was fine, etc. Then I went to do a Windows Update - not fine. The little shield in the upper left corner of the box was red and, when I clicked on the "Check for Updates" box, it replied Windows Update cannot check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I went to Services, started the service, marked it Automatic, and tried again - no joy. So, as it suggested, I rebooted. No joy again. After trying a couple of different backup versions with the same result. I went back to square one and used the original Windows 7 install disk. The install went fine and I was able to use Windows Update successfully. I hoped that having verified that a vanilla Windows 7 worked, I might be lucky enough to just be able to restore my latest backup. Wrong. The system appears to work fine with the only KNOWN problem being Update - there may be other problems, as yet unknown. Differences I am aware of: new hardware partitions proportionally larger than the previous disk.

last weekend I was trying to recover the contents of a failed hard drive to a new hard drive using Windows System Repair Disc and Windows System Image.was able to successfully restore the image. Everything is working fine, but here is my question - the original hard drive was 750 GB and the new one is 1TB. After doing the system restore the hard drive properties show the identical size of the failed drive - not the new larger size. The BIOS shows the correct size. Does the Windows System Image set up the new hard drive exactly as the old one, so it will only access the original 750 GB

I don't know for sure the the Win7 update killed the track-pad, but about a week or so ago after I let it run I've lost the track-pad function completely and the keyboard is erratic. If I accidentally hit the Caps Lock key the keyboard stops responding. I discovered if I open the keyboard control panel and just change a parameter, like how fast the cursor blinks and APPLY then I get the keyboard back without rebooting. I downloaded the track-pad driver, says it's the same as installed but the system no longer recognizes it's there in the control panel. This is an HP G60 series laptop running Win 7 Home.
I'm downloading TSG to add that info, but searching I see many people have had similar problems like this with no solution on various brands of laptops and Windows.

The following text is the culmination of information from a failed attempt to get qualified advice via the Yahoo Answers route. This is why the text is not in a strictly narrative form. I thought it best to provide the accumulated data as is:I recently purchased a replacement battery for my Acer laptop (Acer Aspire 7740-5029). The battery is not a "manufacturer" replacement battery, but is of third-party manufacture. When I turn on my laptop (windows 7 HP 64bit), the laptop does not recognize that the [new] battery is inserted, even though the new battery is inserted. The laptop does function with the replacement battery, but it does not report to Windows the remaining charge, or even that the battery is even there. So, this being the case, I have no idea of the charge/time remaining as I use the laptop and is of no use to me because of that fact.
Technical information: *The factory battery (OEM) is a Sanyo AS07B31 (lithium Ion, 4400mAh, 48Wh, 10.8V, 6 cell). *The replacement battery is a Famis FAM18674 (Lithium Ion, 5200mAh, 49Wh, 14.8V, 8 cell)
Additional Details:For anyone who advises that I seek out and download/update drivers for the new battery, I cannot "download the driver", since in the Device Manager does not even recognize the new battery as being there as an unknown device or otherwise. I cannot update or install a driver for device that Windows doesn't know is even there.
Additional Details:One other person has submitted that the original battery that came withthe laptop contained DRM electronics, so that one cannot replace the OEM battery with a non OEM model.
Additional Details The battery status/plugged-in status icon is on the taskbar and is not hidden. I have always had my taskbar set up to show all icons and to hide none of them. With the laptop not plugged into the AC and the new battery in place, the only icon that is showing is the "no battery detected" icon. Even though the laptop is drawing power from the battery, Windows does not "see" that there is a battery and therefore cannot provide battery usage/time remaining, etc.

first off let me say I am not 100% sure where to post this in the first place but I thought here is at least a start. My wife rendered her laptop without a working screen a little while ago which I replaced. But her HDD now will not boot or even read on a all in one HDD reading device. So i cannot access the info on it. I was dumb and did NOT make a image/backup of the drive. Warranty is out. I have a brand new HDD (same make and model) but do NOT have a legal copy of Windows 7 (business I think was on it). I am somewhat at a loss as what to do.My buddy suggested 'getting' a copy of Windows 7 and the using a CD key changer to make it match the one on the back of the laptop but I was hoping there was something to do more on the legal side of things and still not pay any more money. It is not a very expensive laptop and I have already almost doubled its cost replacing this stuff.

I plan to replace Win 7 HP 64bit with Win 7 Ultimate 64bit on an Asus N53S, a replacement for a laptop that is now trashed and on which the win 7 OEM 64bit version had been installed to replace Win Vista. Is it possible to overcome Win 7 OEM being keyed to one computer MS protocol and if so, how is it done?

I've got a laptop with a piece of really expensive software that is not transferable. As this software has been upgraded over the years, it has required more system resources in order to run smoothly. I am running Windows 7 UltimateIs it possible to clone the laptop's hard drive onto another one and place the new hard drive into a computer with better hardware???What would be the best software for this or is it ok to just use Windows 7 System image utility?

A random times, often not long after startup/wakeup my hard drive appears to freeze. The hard drive light lights up solid, any programs accessing the drive freeze and resource monitor says the disk is "100% active" yet also says "0kb disk I/O" is occuring. After a couple of minutes it fixes itself and anything ive attempted to do during the time it was frozen all happens really quickly. The nature of the problem makes me believe its the hard drive at fault, but its smart readings are fine and ive ran the dell diagnostic tool that came with the laptop without finding any problems. Ive also done the ususal routine of updating drivers and the BIOS etc.
Specs:
Dell XPS L502x
Intel core i7 2ghz (2630 i think)
8gb ram
Nvidia GT 540m
Toshiba MK6461GSGY 640gb HDD

I have 2 laptops - the hard drive for one of them is now suddenly asking me for a password.I never set any password on it
1. I set the BIOS password on one laptop (which has a dual boot)
2. I made a backup image of the Windows OS on an external drive using that dual-booted machine
3. I then installed that backed-up image on the other harddrive using the same machine - and that caused the password....

My friend's laptop (Acer Aspire One 722 - Windows 7 x64) has been shut down after opening an email and Windows never started up again. When you attempt to start up the windows, it stays the black screen and says "No bootable Device Found"! I inserted Windows Live Disk and loaded it (Windows XP Mini - Golden Edition). When I went to "My Computer", it did not show any local drive. I went to "Disk Management" and in there, there was also no unallocated or allocated space. I even removed the HDD and plugged it back in. No thing happened. Then I removed the RAM card and inserted it back. Again, nothing happened! By the way, HDD had movements when laptop was on (I had removed the beneath panel).I inserted Windows 7 Disk to install a fresh Windows 7. But when you get to the part where it asks you to choose the partition to install the operating Sustem, it shows one unallocated drive with 0 (Zero) capacity! The options to Delete and format are disable. Only the option "New" is active and it gives you (0) bite to partition!

My motherboard crapped out on my HP dv6000 a week ago and so I decided it was time to upgrade. I just ordered a new dell latitude e6410 so I'm really excited!
Anyway, my dv6000 will not charge and is completely dead. I am trying to figure out the easiest and most economically sound way to get everything off my hard drive and on to my new machine.

So one of my friend's laptop had been acting slow, and I took a look at it and I cleard out some applications but it was still going bad. it turns out the hard drive had to be replaced, so he sent it in under warranty. I reinstalled Norton 360 and Office for him, and helped him reinstall some of his games. Then i found out it was acting slow again, and was practically unusable for gaming! He's coming down this weekend, and I plan to take another hack at it. But I don't know what the cause would be. it's a new hard drive with a new factory image. I suspect that the new hard drive might be faulty, but I don't know how to test it. I do have some spare hard drives around that I could install, but I'd like kto know what testing processes or programs I can use to better diagnose the problem.

I was booting off an ssd originally and have a regular hdd as backup. then i had to get my laptop repaired. i removed the ssd and shipped the laptop off. upon receiving it, i popped my hard drive back in and changed the boot settings in bios to my ssd instead of the hdd.it boots just fine, but my wallpaper was gone and i cant access certain things like my computer, control panel, etc. an error pops up saying that it wont initialize.is there a procedure i must do? i tried sfc scannow and it restored my desktop, but it said somethings were unable to be repaired. im also wondering how come it didnt just work right away as if i never sent it in for repairs. i stumbled upon a guide that said how to re register my dlls.
